Look at me I'm Citizen Kane.png
305KB, 720x540px
Welles is a pretty shit director. Not only did he do nothing new, most of his filmography is complete shit that just gets worse as it goes on. Citizen Kane is alright but nothing special unless it's the first film you've ever seen. Nonlinear story structure was already done in DW Griffith's Intolerance, shadows and low angles in sound already done in John Ford's Arrowsmith, invisible cuts and whippans in DW Griffith's Abraham Lincoln, deep focus in William Wyler's stuff as well as Jean Renoir's, and Citizen Kane's script is literally Power and the Glory which Preston Sturges wrote. Power and the Glory honestly looks a lot like Kane visually and was directed by William K Howard, who is a far better director than Welles could ever hope to be. But really what makes Welles shit is he lacks any subtlety whatsoever. He makes use of long takes and multiple events happening in the frame well, but his mise en scene is turned up to 11. A lot of his shots look like they were done by a film school freshman shouting for attention (which he kind of was since he was schooled on film history before directing Kane). Really, he's just a name easily impressed plebs that don't know their history lap up. If you actually think anything directed by Orson Welles is good after seeing anything prior by superior directors, your taste is highly questionable and ought to be checked for early signs of down syndrome.

I don't see any explicitly racist thing about it. And the negative reception by NAACP is exaggerated. It was the highest grossing silent film and was voted one of the greatest at the World's Fair and 1952 sight and sound poll

>D W Griffith's film tells the story of America during the Civil War and Reconstruction. It depicts black men (white actors in black face) as violent, stupid and obsessed with interracial marriage. In contrast, it paints the Ku Klux Klan as heroes on a mission to protect the country.
The film has an "evil, deeply racist side," says Melvyn Stokes, a film professor at University College London and the author of In the Shadow of 'The Birth of a Nation': A Centennial Assessment of Griffith's film.

Cactus Flower is one of the greatest comedies ever made with great use of the entire frame. Plenty of peak-ins, clever uses of irises, soft focus, and depth for jokes to play out. And it executes flawlessly one of the hallmarks of good comedy, unpredictability under the guise of believability. It's a culmination of the entire history of cinematic comedy.

What did you think of Citizen Kane, slept?
>>
>>83902544
To criticize that film justly is a tough job. Usually, most of the critics simply state their opinion that a film is good, bad or indifferent, but they have not specific knowledge of what makes a film good or bad. It may be the story or only the continuity that is wrong. It may be the direction or the acting. Many times the director gets the blame for a bad story or continuity, although he had nothing to do with them, but had done the best anyone could have done with the material at hand. Actors are blamed for a bad performance when in fact they only did what they were ordered to do by their director. Although Welles did all these things himself, in criticizing his work one must specify in which be has failed.
I shall start (contrary to Welles's technic) at the beginning with the basic element of a film — the story. As a story proper "Citizen Kane" has much to criticize. It is neither big nor vital enough to justify the tremendous outlay of work, time and money which can easily be recognized even by a layman. It is just another story of an over-ambitious man; in this particular case a newspaper publisher, who incidentally aspires to become governor. A man who has built a vast newspaper empire only to see it crumble. A man who collects anything and everything from the four corners of the globe without being in the slightest interested in anything be collects. A man who deserts his wife and child only to be deserted in the end by the woman for whom be deserted. In a way he has ideals at the start, but he has not the necessary character to live up to them. Citizen Kane really cares for three things only; Kane, KANE and K A N E!
There is nothing particularly new in all that. It has happened thousands of times in real life, and it has been filmed many times. And the same mistake made in previous films has been repeated. The laboratory analysis — under the microscope — of Citizen Kane's heart and soul has been forgotten.
>>
>>83902544
really enjoyed it, wish the ending wasn't constantly memed about though so I could have gone into it spoiler free
loved the framing, general aesthetic, lighting and pretty much everything about it

is this the part where you call me a plen for not watching whatever film preceded it?

So he's shit because he used all the techniques that were invented prior to him filming citizen kane? Are you not supposed to build on experience in order to create the best thing you can, regardless of the work or form of art?

I agree with you about the mise en scene though but I do think it made the film quite striking which I enjoyed. Can I watch intolerance if i've only seen judith of bethulia?

>>
>>83909275
Because they didn't know Griffeth did neorealism first. And this was before Bazinian theory of the long take-over-montage took off. And doubly before the theory of the instinctive cut took off. Each all Griffeth achieved masterfully, but since niggers got a political voice, his filmography has been subsequently downplayed since. But before, Griffeth was the king of all kings. A god among boys much akin to me.

Kubrick is very self conscious, he's got lots of "structure" and metaphor and so on... But just having structure and metaphor doesn't make a great film, in my view. I've probably seen fewer Kubrick films than most everyone in this general, though from all his periods, but every one I have seen (possibly excepting the early and somewhat anomalous "Killer's Kiss") had what I would call a lack of visual structure. There are lots of ideas, and lots of visual tricks, but the spatial architecture, which in what I would call a great film consists of the way lines and surfaces and angles and light and movement combine to create the meaningful visual expression that I find in Ford and Hitchcock and Rossellini and Bresson and Brakhage and Kubelka, is lacking. His films have for me a curious visual "emptiness," a feeling that the imagery is a kind of vacant vessel for stylistic and thematic and plot flourishes ("redrum" and all that), and this is true from me from "The Killing" to "Full Metal Jacket" to "Eyes Wide Shut, to choose three I've seen in recent years. Their hollow core suggests "A. I." (which I also disliked) as his perfect subject, I suppose, as was HAL, but he doesn't do enough with that hollowness in his own films to make it an expression in itself.

As a war movie, "Full Metal Jacket" seemed rather predictable too -- I just *knew* it was the African-American who would get killed.

If you unironically think Emily Jean, Anna Kendrick, Emma Watson, or Daisy Riley are good you should just end it.
