/tpg/ Twin Peaks General

Lynch is now seeing all of the residents of Twin Peaks except for the Sheriff's department as a vehicle to do short films. What better way to return to each of them when the majority of the story is outside the town? Either a very short one scene one like Wally, or a few scenes like Jacoby. We won't see Jacoby again, Becky and her boyfriend have replaced him and that will last about as long. Anyone hoping the scenes with the citizens of Twin Peaks being "important" are sadly mistaken. They weren't important before, but because all their stories were framed as a dramatic soap opera and intertwined they felt more important. Now that plebs are being expected to watch a new form of storytelling with nobody holding their hand telling them what it is, they can't handle it.

Guys, I can't stop rewatching the ending to Part 5. I genuinely think this is one of the most poignant moments with Cooper in the entire series. If you rewatch the original show, there wasn't much of an emotional thread to the character, he wasn't one dimensional, but compared to characters like Laura, Leland, Bobby there never really were any of those really heartwrenching scenes where we felt for Cooper himself. There's the finale, but that is more of a horror show than something melancholic.

This scene, and him crying when he looks at Sonny Jim are really beautiful scenes.

I don't hate them either. They just really bog down the show. ABC is mostly to blame for this shit. The last third of Season 2 is largely unwatchable and is, objectively, a chore to get through. I actually really enjoy the slow "confusing" burn that Season 3 has had thus far. The Twin Peaks subreddit seems more preoccupied with breaking everything down and fucking theorizing. What S3 really feels like it's missing from the old Lynch repertoire is a sense of place. Establishing a sense of the familiar was key to a lot of his surreal horror imo. When your whole psychological world is projected onto a single room, house, or town you can put all the darkness and mystery of existence onto one radiator, or hallway, ceiling fan, old building, or circle of trees. But I guess Lynch has moved on to a new, less psychologically rooted style. I just don't get the same degree of fear out of the new episodes, not yet anyways.

For the first few decades of his career, he was extremely anxious about being financially solvent and creating works that would actually sell, not just that would satisfy his art boner. Especially after he spent his Eraserhead years unable to support his family and living in a dilapidated house, he wanted to do something secure.

He fucked that up pretty bad when Dune lost 18 million dollars, but Twin Peaks is a victim of the same urge. He wanted something viable. It wasn't until 2000 or so that he got down to making stuff that genuinely interested him.
