elaborating on why I like Windom Earle:

it may be easy to forget with the new season and all the memefication of the black lodge how uncertain and unsettling those scenes were. Cooper was observer in a world of pure irrationality. The lodge spirits spoke in another language, acted in symbolic gesture, were one with the unstable flow of events. Cooper who is the one always in control in the real world is rendered completely passive in the lodge.

Then there's Earle, who seems to learn the language of the lodge. While we see Leland be taken over by Bob, it's not as if the man himself Leland Palmer learned to navigate the lodge. But Windom Earle is someone we see in the "real" world as a character make the transition to the abstract language of the lodge world. His control of that world is terrifying, it feels unexpected and daring to see this human being with an agency in what we initially thought was just Cooper's dream world. And then just as quickly the irrationality asserts itself again when Earle is extinguished by Bob. Once again we left without anyone we understand in the driver's seat.

What hypocrisy? I'm saying that the show is intended as both satire and sincere melodrama. Parts are a joke but they're within stories that you are meant to care about. A key example is Leland at Laura's funeral. His reaction is so uncomfortably over the top that you feel the need to laugh (and it's made worse/more obvious by the broken lift) but the emotions in scene are also true and meant to be felt by the audience, and should be. Twin Peaks may have aspired to transcend tv of it's day, but it's also a very honest product of it's time as well.

S3 so far is much more obviously a satire of police procedurals in anything relating to the Hastings case. It's hilarious, but there's no way to take the character interactions of the detectives seriously and I think that harms the show a bit. The original run never blew off it's characters for easy jokes that way
