Davison did pretty decently for ratings, it seems. He remained fairly consisten throughout Season 20-21, apart from Frontios which varies wildly from 5.6m to 8.0m

The other Doctors are all just really good

Granted, I've only seen a few McCoy serials. Maybe my opinion of him will change when I watch his run in context - my opinion of Davison is certainly higher now than it was a year ago. Maybe my opinion of Colin will grow more negative, as well.

Who nose.
>>
>>83501582
As someone who loves 7…

Honestly, among the early glory days of BF, he does have a disproportionate share of the worst ones, and only one of the truly great ones.

But still, he still does have a lot of very good ones. It's just that the other three have even more.

(As time goes on and BF starts to oversaturate, the four main Doctors really kind of even out in story quality.)
>>
>>83501809
I'm thinking of listening to Davison's BF stuff in chronological order (from the doctor's point of view)

Is this a bad idea

I've heard some BF stuff - Jubilee and Spare Parts were fantastic, the first one was decent, Legend of the Cybermen was good too, and one of the others in the old Jamie trilogy
>>
>>83501582
Master and Dust Breeding are the only two of his that I've heard but both were good. McCoy is my Doctor but I got sidetracked by Six. He's the GOAT Big Finish Doctor.
>>
So I haven't been watching since the 50th anniversary stuff. Basically seen almost no Capaldi stuff. I didn't like most of the Matt Smith era and I am much more into classic Who.

Can somebody give me the best standalone episodes of the past few years I could check out? Also has it improved/is it worth catching up?
>>
>>83501901
There are a few people on here who've been listening to everything in (Doctor-)chronological order.

Honestly, I don't really get the point of that. They're generally released in chronological order for each companion-pairing, but the writers seem to find it more interesting to break up the 5/Peri/Erimem cycle with 5/Nyssa and 5/Turlough stories, and it worked for me listening in that order. I can't see how The Church and the Crown would be improved by having listened to the complete set of pre-Peri audios beforehand; all you need is the one other Peri/Erimem one.

That being said, I don't see any problem with it, either. (Well, except for the trivial problem that they're still making 5/Nyssa stories, so you can't actually finish all the 5/Nyssa stories before starting the 5/Turlough ones, because some of them don't exist yet…)
>>
>>83502018
Capaldi is a drastically different doctor to any of the other nuwho doctors (though he's most similar to eccleston). Episodes have largely focused more on character drama than the monster of the week plot (though that's also there)

If you insist on skipping through it all, the best episodes to watch are probably
>Listen
>Mummy on the Orient Express
>Flatline
>Dark Water/Death in Heaven (optional)
>The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar (optional)
>Face the Raven
>Heaven Sent
>>
>>83502132
Also Extremis from S10, perhaps Oxygen too
>>
>>83502018
Heaven Sent. just that.

I personally think the Capaldi era started off shit and has been getting exponentially better since then. But thats just opinion. I dont know what u would like
>>
>>83502112
I dunno; because the show is structured that way it just seems to make sense. Also, I'm hoping that character moments in the audios/shows will enhance character moments in the shows/audios and make me appreciate them more. And it just interests me to experience the whole thing in order.

Nevertheless, I haven't even listened to the first Fivey audio and Nyssa has already left the show, so I've already fucked up.
>>
>>83501582
If you're asking for specific recommendations for 7 rather than just "yes", here's 3 you can do without any prior stories:

>Master is GOAT.
>Harvest is pretty solid, and starts the 7/Ace/Hex trio, which (if you skip over Dreamtime) is mostly pretty solid.
>Shadow of the Scourge is a VNA that never was.
>Love and War is a VNA that was, so if you've never read any of the novels, do that one instead
>>
>>83502291
I'm not a big reader so I might try Love and War. Master sounds interesting, too.

I've had Psychodrome ready to listen to for about a week but I think too much about things and I get the old "what do I look at while I listen/should I listen in bed/will I fall asleep/audio is a bit silly because everyone needs to explain what they're looking at all the time" etc

Which is silly because I've already listened to and enjoyed several plays
>>
Now that they're all in the bag, what's /who/'s opinion on the War Doctor series? I enjoyed them but found them pretty unmemorable.
>>
>>83502210
But the show really isn't structured that way.

Certainly S19 wasn't designed to have dozens of new 5/Nyssa stories crammed in.

And the BF stories weren't designed for people who haven't watched Nyssa's later stories yet, they were designed for people who've watched most of her stories multiple times and read most of the relevant MAs and PDAs.

Just think of this obvious case: You've seen Caves of Androzani, right? Caves is clearly written for the Doctor having just dropped off the last of his old companions and picked up a brand new one. If you insert a couple dozen more stories in between (with another new companion thrown in for half of them who gets a happy exit), it doesn't get better, it loses its edge. And those dozens of stories aren't designed to change Caves, that's just an unavoidable side effect of wanting to do stories with 5 and Peri.
>>
>>83502530
bland and forgettable desu
>>
>>83502530
Bought them all, stopped listening at some point in S2 or S3 I think, and nothing anyone's said here or anywhere else makes me think I should resume them.
>>
>>83502534
I actually haven't seen Caves, but I get the point you're making. It's supposed to be his one story with Peri, right?

I guess you're right. I was also keen on getting all of a particular companion's stories out of the way before having to say goodbye to them on the show, as if their exits would be improved by the audios or something.

I also just kind of liked the idea of it, but it is kid of a hard thing to keep up with, really.

Fuck it. I'm still going to watch/listen chronologically, but not with the show and the audios in tandem.

I have a choice right now of watching The King's Demons or listening to Psychodrome in bed - which shall I choose?
>>
The name of the place, is Babylon 5.
>>
>>83502291
>>83502396
>Love and War is a VNA that was, so if you've never read any of the novels, do that one instead
I was a bit disappointed by the adaptation, mainly because Jan+Ace doesn't work as well with the much faster pace of the audio.

But still a great story, and one of the best novel adaptations, and probably especially good for someone who doesn't know Benny, Roz, or Chris. So if you're not likely to read the novel, I'd second the recommendation.

Also the other ones are all good, but maybe also try Colditz and, if you like it, you can jump ahead to Klein's later stories.
>>
>>83502695
>listening in bed
I can't do this. I fall straight asleep. I can't do it whilst driving either. It distracts me too much. I have to either be walking or on the bus or train.
>>
>>83502808
>I fall straight asleep
That's why I've put off listening to it for so long. But I think I might be okay for it right now.

I fell asleep during one before... Jubilee? Maybe. Or Storm Warning. I just had to go back and listen to it again. Bit of a drag.

I could try listening on the train.
>>
Just got through some of Diary of River and War Doctor s3. Gotta say I'm a bit worried War Doc S4 will end on a cliffhanger that'll now never be resolved.

Why does 8 have the best audios though? Goddamn he has some good stuff.
>>
>>83502695
Well, Planet of Fire introduces Peri (while also doing a bunch of other stuff at the same time; it's kind of a busy story), then Caves is next.

It's not really that hard to keep up for 5. But then you get to 6, and I think you'd want to listen to 8/Charley before 6/Charley, then 7, where the chronology gets complicated, then 8, which is so impossible to keep straight that it broke Gary Russell.

Anyway, King's Demons is not very good, but it is short, and it's more dumb than boring, so on the one hand you can probably get through it, but if you do pass out you're not missing much.
>>
>>83502956
I've heard about the multi-doctor arcs getting all fucky, honestly that almost puts me off getting into it. It is interesting though, since it's the kind of thing they can only do with audios.
Then there are all these questions like do I listen to the main range in release order, what about the box sets, the companion chronicles, do I skip around, does it matter, etc.

Is the 3 stuff with Tim Teloar any good? Or the companion chronicles? The biggest draw to these stories for me is them having the original doctors reprising their roles, so I don't know how I'd react to their abscene, or impersonators. I realised the other night that Jo is my favourite companion and I want more of that era.

Man Big Finish is a mine field. I wonder how many regular sales they get.
>>
>>83502918
Early on, I think 6 beats 8, and 5 comes pretty close to him.

But in the middle era, 8 has the most good audios because they were trying all kinds of different stuff—the Divergent Arc was stupid, but they were explicitly seeking experimental stories for it, then the EDAs were a totally different format, etc. With everyone else, it was basically up to the individual writers to push themselves, and some of them were starting to gradually run out of steam.

>>
>>83503169
>the Divergent Arc was stupid, but they were explicitly seeking experimental stories for it

I loved the setup for the divergent universe, the noises banging on the edge of existence, and of course Scherzo, which is something that only ever works in audio (which I wish they'd try more of) but yeah, when it turns out they literally just take his tardis off him and have someone lead him through areas was a bit shit. I was hoping for some real unusual shit.

Happiness through acceptance, productivity through happiness...

Also fuck I miss Lucie but I love that it had an impact on him, that scene with the tape recorder is brilliantly done.
>>
>>83501582
>Are his Big Finishes worth listening to?
He has a hand full of good ones prior to Zagreus, but the McCoy stories really came into their own with The Harvest and the introduction of Hex to the Tardis. I still consider A Death in the Family one of the best Who stories in any medium, although it has been a while since I relistened and it does require like 10 years worth of audios to fully appreciate.
>>
>>83502918
>>83503169
I'm stalled at Invaders From Mars with Eight. I love him and Charlie but Six and especially Evelyn distracted me from them. The first run of stories with Four and Leela was pretty good too IIRC.
>>
>>83503370
I wish we could've seen what happened if the Divergent Universe arc was allowed to continue. It only ended because NuWho was starting and they didn't want new listeners jumping into some weird shit..
>>
>>83503066
The multi-Doctor stuff, if you're anal about putting together a strict chronology maybe some of them are troublesome, but not just for enjoying them, you can do Zagreus as an 8 story without needing to know/remember much of what the other three have been up to, Klein's Story as a 7 without being up to speed on 8, etc.

Meanwhile, I wouldn't plan on ever catching up with all of BF's output. The first 4-8 years has the highest proportion of quality stuff, and for the most part it's simple enough to keep everything straight up to about that far. When you hit that point, you'll know what you like and be able to find recommendations that fit your tastes.

I haven't actually listened to the 3DAs, but some of the Early Stories are pretty good. Russell/Purves/Hines don't sound like Hartnell/Troughton, but they sound different from their own character, and it's not nearly as distracting as with Hurndall because it's audio. I assume with a dedicated Pertwee actor instead of one of the companions doubling up, it should be at least as good.

As for the CCs, I'm not that into them. Some of them are great stories, but it's not the same as a full-case audio. And for the most part, they're the best when they don't try (e.g., Lalla Ward narrating the Doctor's parts like an audiobook is much better than Caroline John trying to do Brig and 3 voices), at which point I just wonder why I'm not listening to an audiobook instead. But I know some people love them, so, to each their own.
>>
>>83503230
The mouth flopping open was one of the creepiest parts along with the human hands. If they got rid of that too then I will personally shit into a paper bag and place it on the doorstep of Moffat's oldest living female relative, set fire to it, ring the doorbell and run away.

>>
>>83503370
>>83503737
Scherzo was brilliant, but it would only need some trivial rewrites to work without the Divergent Universe. Natural History of Fear would work as-is. Only Caerdroia would really be a loss if they dumped the whole arc.

And the concept was just dumb. A universe where there is no time sounds like a cool idea, but it's just a universe where time is actually exactly the same except nobody has the word "time" and nobody's ever seen a clock, which is far less interesting than The Wedding of River Song, much less a smart SF treatment of the idea.

And the evolution theme wasn't really a theme so much as a competition to see which writers could misunderstand the basics of evolution the worst without even being told why Gary Russell wanted them to write about it.

That's the same one where I got stalled on my complete monthly 1-100 listen. Here's how I got unstuck:

1. Reminded myself that Gatiss's commentary is actually more interesting than the story itself.
2. Reminded myself that if that isn't enough motivation, Chimes of Midnight is next (which I haven't listened to in over a decade, but I remember it being great).
3. Fell asleep listening to Invaders, woke up with my phone having gone through the whole playlist.
4. Couldn't remember how far I got before falling asleep, so I read the summary on the DW Reference Guide.
5. Decided that I probably listened to that whole thing, and I should give myself the benefit of the doubt.
6. Chimes time!

Psychodrome is fine so far, just finished part one and it's managed to hold my attention.

Matthew Waterhouse is speaking very breathily and sounds nothing like Adric, and everybody is explaining what they're looking at even though everybody else is also looking at exactly the same thing and it should need no explaining

Some nice character moments between Tegan and Nyssa, the latter of whom sounds exactly right and slips right back into the roll wonderfully.

The plot seems to have borrowed elements from Catrovalva and Full Circle, and seems to be setting up The Master but is obviously going to have it actually not be him

Anton Motchenko (the original Hat Doctor writer and director) just announced that new Doctor Who fan series is in development!
Some teasers/into

- Series start with alternative Eight Doctor, meaning that only 1-7 Doctor are canon in his universe
- New companion is Russian, but she's very unique and the way she's introduced was never made before
- Series will be more lighthearted and fun, getting darker as the series progresses
- Completely new appearance for the Doctor: he's more "energetic" and Hat is gone.

First episode will premiere later this summer.

Get hyped!!!

Dr Who does not have a canon. Season 1 Episode 2 never happened for example. The Daleks were not just radioactive monsters who hide in metal boxes. They were created.
Two different origin stories for the same species.

From what I know, the comics are as canon as the TV show.
