Your monitor only supports 256 shades of gray. A modern camera supports 4096 or more. That means some different shades will have to be merged together when they're shown on your monitor. The human eye is less sensitive to highlight and shadow details than to midtone detail, so we merge more in the highlights and shadows so we can preserve more detail in the midtones. Analog film does this naturally, and this kind of "tone reproduction curve" is standard.

But somebody noticed that the sensitivity of the human eye to different levels of brightness is context dependent. The same shade of gray looks different depending on what other shade it's next to. And additionally, a subtle gradient is easy to overlook, so by adding subtle gradients to the image we can change what shades are next to each other, faking the appearance of more than 256 shades of gray on your monitor. This is "tone mapping". If done very carefully it can look good, but it's usually done by the same morons who love lens flare and shaky-cam, so the "subtle" gradients are not subtle at all and you have big ugly halos around everything.
