>1: Good animation for it's time.
Eh, it has a neat color palette and some shots look decent in motion, but that's about it. As far as art goes, it's just fairly bogstandard animation for a 1980s sci-fi film, and it looks particularly mediocre when you consider it was made just two years before Akira. No one studies the 1986 Transformers film as an example of good animated cinematography in colleges, anon.
>2: Fairly "adult" storyline all things considered. Killed a whole bunch of bots, something that just didn't happen in kids franchises back then.
More like, a fairly bostandard "we're running out of Diaclone molds and need to sell new toys so we'll just kill off almost every single major character" storyline. People who unironically think having a lot of characters dying is what makes an "adult" narrative, not the actual exploration of complicated adult themes like determinism or mortality (like Beast Wars does, for instance), are the reason why modern Star Wars and DC movies are trying so hard to be edgy without actually having anything besides a drama facade.
>3: Balls to the wall soundtrack.
The Stan Bush songs are fucking terrible outside of the nostalgic context of the movie, the metal songs feel like tryhard discount versions of Iron Maiden and, while Vince DiCola has some decent synth tracks, he is hardly a Vangelis or a Moroder. Hardly anything holds up in the sound department.
So no, the 1986 film is nowhere near as good as you remember it to be, anon.
>>6488155
>The Stan Bush songs are fucking terrible

>>6488157
Try showing The Touch to a /mu/tant who has no nostalgic attachment to Transformers, anon. He might very likely pass out of an overdose of 1980s power pop genericness.

All I could do to my Artfire was split the hip piece slightly so I could drip silicone lubricant onto the hip ratchets' gears. Artfire's hip piece doesn't come apart any further than this since it seems to be held together entirely by glue.
I'm not really sure how well graphite powder would work for this since you really have to let it spread by itself (it probably would work it would just be a paint to get enough on). I don't really think this would do anything to prevent that breakage (honestly that was probably just a one-off) but this completely solved the over-tight ratchet joints for me. Once I worked in the lubricant the ratchet joints went from being uncomfortably firm to easy to move but still completely secure, like Inferno and Grapple.

It's weird because they share so many parts, but twin twist feels much worse than topspin. His feet have a really weird angle to them that almost forces him to stand with a pelvic thrust just to not tip forward, and his treads hanging all the way back doesn't help either. They're also unpainted on the inside, which looks pretty meh. Topspin is probably my favorite TR mold so far, so I figured twintwist would have been a shoe-in too.
Misfire is the complete opposite though, it's like he's triggerhappy with none of the robot mode clunkyness.

So how do you think Hasbro will be doing Combiners this time? From the looks of Starscream and Grimlock, they seem to have CW Computron looking feet on their arms. Does that mean deluxes will only include hands? Will they have certain parts you can only get for each figure? Looking at the feet of Jazz, it's clear the deluxes are going to be combiner limbs, but will they not make it linewide this time?
>>6488143
Simply bend his torso and unscrew what you see. You should keep both halves of his hips squeezed together in your hand while you do it though since his ratchet springs are strong enough to put pressure on that little black part and make unscrewing it difficult.
Also that third screw does literally nothing. I have no clue why it's there.
>>6488317
I rewatched the whole series a year or so ago, having a few drinks helps by miles.
>>6488322
You can already tell he just has a jet backpack fold-the-robot-away-and-flip-it-over transformation. Thinks aren't looking up for Warden's line.
>>6488317
Haven't seen it in a few years, I got the opposite feeling watching Masterforce, I remember hating the show as a child because the main characters weren't robots, but watching it as an adult I loved the hero path Ginrai had.
>got into an alien war by accident, tried to escape but came back after the cons killed some of his trucker friends and unwilliling became the autbot commander.
>>6488317
I think if you're starting with an episode that's mostly remembered as payoff for a slow-burn plotline then you're probably gonna have a bad time. Although, yes, you do need to temper your expectations for a show which would by necessity kill off characters so there were fewer models to render per episode.

>comparing TF The Movie to Akira
Well thats not fair. TF The Movie is about as well animated as the Macross DYRL and that movie is constantly praised for its visuals, and Id say that speaks more to the quality of Akira rather than the lack thereof in most 80s japanese animation films. There's lots of gorgeous shots in TF the movie I can ploint you too.
>>6488477
I wouldn't say TFTM was as consistently gorgeous as DYRL but it did have some great animation. In any event I loved it, wrinkles and all. It's not a masterpiece but it is a lot of fun.

>>6488496
>>6488506

It requires way too much fucking partsforming, the individual bots are too small, and Onslaught and Brawl looking nothing like their G1 characters because they're just repaints of those shitty energon toys.

Buying add on kits isn't a problem if you save money not buying all the shitty RID and Bayformer toys.

>>6488537
I wound up getting him on a whim when Family Dollars were clearanceing out energon stuff for dirt cheap and I wanted Decepticon grunts. Never got any of the limbs, but even as his own background dude he's pretty solid. Hard to hate a mobile missile launcher.

>>6488571
Considering there are fans of Shia Lebouf in these threads, nostalgia goggles know no limits.
>>6488486
DYRL was pretty inconsistent too though, there were a number of scenes where the art/framerate went back to tv quality.
>>6488570
Same here, I found the Universe re-release in a discount dollar shop about a decade ago and he hasn't left the company of my CHUGs ever since, even without owning any of the limbs either.
If something, I've always felt like his forearms are a little too short and stubby, but what can you do. The figure itself is still incredibly solid and definitely holds up to modern standards in just about every other regard.
>>6488571
I'm not saying it's the gold standard to jetformer undercarriages or anything, but Silverbolt is definitely doing a cleaner job at it than Starscream
>>6488586
>I can't see shit from in here
>>6488562
I read the cliff notes, it's I can't imagine reading the whole thing. I was suffering.
>>6488599
Lets be fair, Starscream also has to works as a CW torso, so a better comparison is CW Silverbolt. Man I really wish Starscream's arms, and feet were better designed, I don't like this term but it really does look like something for playschool.
>>6488551
So that is why it sucked
Thanks for reccomending me Sky Shadow /toy/, he's great. Amazed at the feet too, you can have him in a ton of poses without falling over. The engineering is just grade-A overall.
That said the stickers are a little annoying and the fortress mode is... I don't even know what they were going for. Also the red panels on the knees are splitting a bit, but I'm not sure if that's just mine
Regardless, fucking dope toy. I might just get Overlord too because of how much I love the mold
Also got Kup. He has a nice Gerwalk mode I guess, but kinda meh otherwise
>>6488513

Is victory any good? How about RID 2001 and Armada?
>>6488712
Victory is probably the best one in the G1 continuity, RiD 2001 and Armada are both bland animes at best and horrible cringefests at worst.
>>6488712
I feel like you could skip from BW to Animated and miss nothing good.
>>6488729
This, the only truly watchable trio is BW, Animated and Prime. Everything else in terms of Transformers shows ranges from "somewhat cringey nonsense", like G1 and Cybertron, to "absolute bottom of the barrel", like Energon and both RiDs.
>>6488317
I watched Beast Wars for the first time in full relatively recently, like 2-3 years ago maybe. I saw some episodes as a kid but not much. I thought it held up well enough, the visuals are obviously dated as all fuck but not unwatchable if you can at least appreciate it for what it was at the time, and the action and writing ranged from serviceable to fairly decent and it wasn't hard staying interested.
I will say though that the show goes full on toy commercial starting the second season. It got a little groan inducing at times when you could tell how hard the ad execs were nudging the writers and animators to get them to shoehorn in transmetals and fuzors and tell the audience how great they are, compared to season 1 which felt fairly natural introducing characters. If I rewatch it again I'd marathon the entire first season, but I wouldn't feel ashamed skipping over a few Season 2 and 3 episodes.
I've got to admire how toy-accurate Challenge of the Gobots was compared to G1
>>6488732
those shows have really shitty visuals though, at least both RiDs have cool robots
like the Animated designs literally look like how I drew when I was 13. even in the concept art the poses are really awkward and lanky
>>6488347
Wait a second...
He has motherfucking stickers. Even the fucking faction symbol is a sticker.
Stickers on voyager/leader still won't fucking go away after TR? Ruining great designs like MPM04 with shitty material/engineering wasn't enough?
>>6488537
If his backpack could compress a bit more and he had a few panels to hide the head in alt mode he might honestly be better than any of the CW torsos. Still not bad for a deluxe combiner that's over a decade old
>>6488743
At this point I'm wondering if Warden is getting a cut of toyhax/reprolabel's sales.
>>6488746
He's got a far better deco and aesthetic than any of the CW combiners, gotta give him that. Even his exposed head isn't as bad as how CW Onslaught just leaves a giant awkward gap under the AA gun.
>>6488753
While the UT may have had an iffy track record for it's toys until cybertron but aesthetically they were great and they always used the sexiest shades of plastic. Even the colors for TR with its embrace of late G1 don't pop nearly as much.

Someone red-pill me on MPs and Soundwave
Just watched Jobby's review for him and he looks p amazing, it's just that I'm new to the MP scene so I don't know what the secrets are
So MP Soundwave seems to be around $150-160 US (Primal is around $100-110?!), however
there seem to be different runs of Soundwave. There's a run with yellow eyes and 5 cassettes, and a run with red eyes and just Laserbeak - both priced at $160. I'm a fan of what seems to be a darker/metallic blue for the red-eyed run, but I'm not a fan of spending dozens of dollars for his cassettes either.
Thoughts? Do I just get Artfire instead?
>>6488808
>paying double for the same shitty toy with no stickers
Anyone have a list of transformers that turn into functional objects or electronics? There's a soundwave that's a working MP3 player and an Optimus that turns into a pen. What else is there?
>>6488863
The one with yellow eyes and five cassettes is the Hasbro release for Asia. The red-eyed release is Takara Tomy for Japan. I have the former and find him very nice. He also comes with a little diecast block that's shaped like his alt mode. I would say either release would suit you well, but there is the case of having to spend more to get the other two packs of cassettes.
And before Artfire-anon gets involved in this, he would be a perfectly fine purchase as well. Between the two I think Artfire does end up with the more interesting transformation & color scheme.

>>6488876
So does "Takara win again"?
The photos for Hasbro's stuff looks cheaper, but again five cassettes

I mean, in the past I was like "oh boy these pictures of MP Soundwave and Grim-gram look pretty cool" but only after the review mentioning the price did I realize that I can just eat and drink less to save up for these plastic gods
He (both SW and Grim) seem like expressive and posable figures that I would be proud to display on my desk, let alone actively enjoy
I of course mention Grimlock because the only other inter-interaction Soundwave could have is with a back-in-box Miku Figma
>>6489033
>>6489044
Are these double doubles actually true
How's the plastic quality, price point, availability, and danger of getting an empty box?
I've heard good things about the oversized/undersized Grimlock KO but I'm just afraid it's made out of medical plastic or that I'd have to order from suspicious people and get nothing
>capcha asks for canoes but shows a kayak
>>6489045
The only people who bought Inferno are geewunner cartoon-cucks who put their toys on a shelf in bot mode and never touch them, so we'll probably never know.
>>6489047
You mean the c uck thing?
If you say it in the context of you not looking after your own interests first and then considering that of others, especially companies that don't really care about you, then it's appropriate.
If you mean the KO, they are good quality for the most part so, yeah.
>>6489059
IIRC it fixed the issue with the paint's colors not matching. Don't just take my word, though, look up a review just to check on the quality.
>>6489060
I'll say personally I'm fine owning Hasbro's Soundwave. I haven't got all his cassettes displayed properly, but he's a solid dude.

>>6489068
>You mean the c uck thing?
I mean the attitude thing.
>>6488788
youre a retard if you think it isnt you fucking nigger
>>6489059
The official version should only be $15-20, it's about the same quality of a regular deluxe, yet they charge you around $50 because it says Masterpiece on the box. I'd say buy him, it's a good figure, and $20 is fair.
>>6488788
Both are outdated as shit but have enough style and well animated parts to keep them nice looking. Macross DYRL is far from the best looking animation in the 80s.
>>6489097
Sure, but you have to be visually impaired to think it looks anything as good as the Transformers film. Hell, if something, the few shots that looks tight are almost directly ripped off from Macross, the whole Autobot City transformation sequence just reeks of exasperate attempts at being Wapanese.
Got Silverback at Target. They also had bear, lion, and cheetah, so don't pay $6 S&H on $5 toy.
>>6489104
>a good portion of the animators worked on the macross movie/tv show
Macross movie never looked great consistently, plenty of shots where the framerate turns into a flipbook or the characters look like ink bloches.

Yes, most 3P combiners are better than the CW stuff, they shoud, they are more expensive for a reason, but that thing is a poor example.
>>6489141
That's pretty much the only good 3P combiner so far.
I guess we either get accustomed to Hasbro or embrace the hackery of 3Ps.

Can confirm, the PE kit for Computron's head/torso is very similar to Superion's
The head is solid (instead of bendy antennae), but is articulated in two places to condense when going inside Silverbolt/Scattershot's torso
It's basically a palette swap, but it's looks great on both so it's all good
The chest is very different though, where Sup's just adds width to the existing chest panels, Compy's has his whole classic chest armor/shield, it's sweet
Also, Compy's comes with a single brown version of Bruticus' two large "extended" guns for his back silhouette, for just his weapon - in case you thought the muddy-brown "Silverbolt's long gun" wasn't Compy enough
>>6489158
His post suggest that he doesn't know the head has both options (mouthplate on and off) build inside, just have to rotate them on a swivel, the kit looks great, it was designed for the american version but you can make it work with the UW set, just don't see him from the side, the different molding leaves a tiny window at his abs height.
>>6489168
The different molding leaves a tiny window from side to side at his crotch height*
Managed to find 3/4 of the last wave of TR deluxes between today and last night. Found the Slugslinger revision wave in a Myer and then Misfire and Windblade in a K-mart this morning.
Now that I have both Decepticons from the wave I can see why they split them into different cases like they did, the two transform identically, just like Triggerhappy but without turning the waist around and the jet noses move to the opposite side. They're both fine but I like Triggerhappy more, the few extra transformations steps make him more interesting. The faces of their titan masters are painted though so they've got that going for them at least.
Windblade's alright, kinda bland, can't really get worked up either way about her. I put her head on Broadside to make a boat girl and there it will stay until I get bored of it.
>>6489188
>Windblade's alright, kinda bland.

>>6489216
Yes, yes I do. Anything but more spiders.
>>6489059
Also that KO version is voyager scale, so he'll look good with other MP figures, but be tall next to a deluxe.
Got this guy a few days ago, pretty nice for a KO, loving the rust detail they gave his Truck mode.
just got these goys yesterday. was these guys shelfwarming or something? they're pretty cheap
>>6489228
yeah TFP:BH was shelfwarming as a whole.
>>6489228

>>6489228

>>6488155
>and it looks particularly mediocre when you consider it was made just two years before Akira
>comparing a movie with a budget of $6million to a movie with a budget of $1.1BILLION
That's a little unfair and you know it. Nobody said it was the greatest but for what it was, it was still pretty well animated.
>The Stan Bush songs are fucking terrible outside of the nostalgic context of the movie, the metal songs feel like tryhard discount versions of Iron Maiden and, while Vince DiCola has some decent synth tracks, he is hardly a Vangelis or a Moroder.
Honestly, so what if it's "bad"? Is it a lot of fun to listen to? Fuck yeah it is. It's cheesy as fuck but it never fails to put a smile on my face and tempts me to sing along. It's bad in the good way.
I'm not really going to defend the "adult" storyline argument because that's a pretty fucking dumb thing to try to argue. You're 100% right that it was just to sell new toys. Hell, that's what literally the entire series was. The only thing I'll give it credit for really is that killing the characters off was a refreshing surprise when the show was more content to just leave them alive but never have any further plot about them. It's not even that it's more "mature" or "adult". It's just a nice change of pace when they had the balls to kill them instead of just having Prime retire and the old crew fade away into the background, especially when the series is supposed to be about an ongoing war. What's even the point when they're just going to pussyfoot around it and sidestep casualties?
>So no, the 1986 film is nowhere near as good as you remember it to be, anon.
Considering I watch that movie at least once a year and still enjoy it just as much every time, I would say yes, it is. It's no masterpiece but it's still a consistently good time. Lighten up man. You don't have to take yourself so seriously.
Plus, it's still far better than any of the Bay films.
>>6489236

Is this a pic of the final product or just one of those painted prototypes? It would be a damn shame if the beige is actually paint.

>>6489155
>there are 3P that have done it like fanstoys Omega, that is a good representation of the character unlike >>6489130.
Considering Omega is meant to go with other MPs, it fucking SHOULD be a more accurate representation of the character from the particular series it's based off of.
The thing about TFC's Poseidon is that it's not aiming for MP scale or accuracy. It's going for the neo-classics re-imagined look that goes best on a CHUG shelf and it does a very good job of it. The characters may not look G1 accurate but you can still tell who each member is supposed to be just from looking at them despite the heavy redesign. It's also not like the Seacons have any real presence in current IDW so it's not like there is anything to go off of so TFC took their own artistic liberties with the characters and I think they did a fine job of it. They look like they could fit right in with the current IDW aesthetics. The same could be said of GT's Devestator. Does it look like any existing design of the Constructicons? No. Can you still easily tell which character is which at a glance based on kibble and core design features those characters have in nearly every series, like Mixmaster's hood or Bonecrusher's and Scavenger's tread legs? If you say you can't, you are absolutely lying. If you just don't like how it looks, that's one thing and is a matter of personal taste. But to make the claim that "it doesn't look like/represent the character" is objectively wrong.

As someone who loves TR Megatron and already owns Generations Blitzwing, is it worth replacing it with TR Blitzwing?
>>6489252
Blitzwing's paint is so thick it inhibits is transformation. you can still transform him, but you have to force the legs to fit in either vehicle mode. The purple face paint is also so thick it washes out his face details.
Octo/ane doesn't have paint problems, but his cab in truck mode refuses to hold together without strengthening the tab that holds the two pieces together via superglue or Future.
Titans Return's QC is legendarily bad.
>>6489379
if it's a comparison between just the generations and TR Blitzwings, the latter isn't really an improvement. It's overpainted, has dinky weapons, an undersized tank cannon and has been reportedly worse QC than his Megatron pretool.
my own has an uneven chest piece that refuses to stay in place in robot mode as a result.

I would believe the beige would be plastic seeing how there is so much of it, plus it'll look out of place with the cannon which is under the jetmode.
And for octone and hasbro blitzwing they usually are over painted on hasbro versions, you can't make out the mouth details on hasbro blitzwing's face because of how much they use.

But SDCC version seems to cover most of the missing color already beside the one on the shoulder not to mention I don't have to spend the time to paint it.

>>comparing a movie with a budget of $6million to a movie with a budget of $1.1BILLION
In YEN, anon. the budget roughly converts to $10 million in 1988 dollars. Still more than TF, but not by a whole lot. I think the big difference here comes down to who's behind the helm:
>TF:TM, animated by Toei and using a slew of Mecha animators better known for working on /m/ anime like SPT Layzner and Gundam. Animation is a mixed bag between well animated/detailed scenes like Unicron's attacks on Lithrone and Cybertron and error-riddled (both continuity and animation-wise) scenes like most of the Autobot City battle. Keeping in mind that the movie was also being animated while the show itself was still airing.
>Akira, Animated by TMS using a slew of notable (then) up and coming animators, including one or two who also worked on TF, such as Shinya Ohira (who drew pic related). Animation is much more consistent and high quality as a result of different time and budget factors compared to TF.
It's not that TF has worse animation than Akira (In fact, there's arguably worse animated movies from the 80s like Pound Puppies and Battle of the Rock Lords, but that's a different story). Let's just say it's more... uneven, like many of Toei's other films (the Fist of the North Star film comes to mind).
I will give them this- the fact that they animated an entire cast of hard surfaced characters without the aid of computers or rotoscoping for 90 minutes is a bit of an accomplishment in and of itself.
>>6489792
>>6489802
I wanna expand on my CHUG Decepticons, should I get him even though he's a literal who? For the matter, Skullcruncher would probably be one of my favorite TR figures if it wasn't for the awfully bland paintjob and loose knee swivles, and for what it looks Krok does appear to have fixed that. Maybe keeping Skullcruncher in crocodile mode and Krok in robot mode could be a neat display or else?
