So, after negotiating back and forth for weeks I'll be getting the complete first wave of BW 10th anniversary (Cheetor, Rhinox, Waspinator, Dinobot, Rattrap, Tarantulas and the buildable Transmutate that comes with them, all MIB) plus an assorted loose Polar Claw, all for 65 euros next friday (about 76 USD).

What am I in for, /tfg/? I know Dinobot suffers from heavy GPS, is he still displayable in dino mode or is it bad to the point where I should just leave him inside the box for eternity? Any important advice or just overall opinions on the other figures?
>>
The Trypticon tail issue is probably dependant on the spring for the tail mechanism, it's stupidly tight, even more so than the one in the hips.

The annoying thing is you practically need to take Trypticon apart to take this spring out.
>>
>>6484614
Surely gluing that loose cross piece in place is all you need to do?

I love how the translucent aspect of it implies you're supposed to imagine they aren't there in beast mode. Its toyetic silliness. I always felt that if we ever get organic beast formers in other media, they should have imperfect beast modes, with exposed robotic bits,a nd have hologram technology in show to explain away the difference. Maybe even some beast bit clip-on gimmicks, for a dino damage aspect.

Nothing about the post suggests the image was Photoshopped, tard. I had to look up the toy on the wiki to realize it was the same image.
>>
>>6485014
The hips are super easy to fix, but yeah, his issues can be:

-Springs in the hips may be too strong
-They can add two of the same inner hip pieces (posted on TFW, a few users got saddled with this error).
-Tail can also have the spring issue AND it was designed poorly so it will eventually break.

Elaborating on the tail issue, the design flaw is that there's two circular pieces that work to position the tail, but one of those pieces needs to clip into a cylindrical part that's directly connected to the tail. The connection between those pieces is extremely simple, which leads to breakage in the long run.

Oh and Trypticon has the dragon mouth section of the tail (the gray bit) painted, despite that piece being separate form the purple railing/street thing, making it weird it wasn't casted in gray in the first place, and an issue since it might scrape against the ground if you move it. Same for the bottom of the feet since they're painted white.

Nope, this has nothing to do with GPS, Hasbro hasn't used that sort of plastic in a figure for over a decade now. The issue here is a poorly designed joint which suffers from excessive pressure, hence why shaving it off actually solves the issue entirely. If it was actual GPS then poor Rattrap would not have stress marks or clear cracks in certain spots, but rather, he would literally crumble to pieces with just the slightest pressure applied in any of the orange parts.
>>
>>6484793

So...the combiners are basically the same as the old toys they were based on? Simple as fuck, and nearly no one cared about the individual parts, only the fuck huge monster they combined into? That's not the best excuse for mediocre individual robots but it could still have been an acceptable compromise - that is, if the combiners themselves didn't look like utter disproportionate shit, with massive limbs and large plain unpainted pieces and comically tiny feet. If those abysmal gestalts are the best excuse for the sacrifices in Deluxes and Voyagers then it seems fair to say they completely and utterly fucked up the entire line.

No, they don't. They sometimes get add-ons but you don't buy a 3rd party gestalt thinking it's only going to look remotely passable from an aesthetic level if you spend an extra 50 dollars on an upgrade kit just for slightly bigger feet.

polar claw was one of the first purchases I ever made as a kid. Saved up money to get a toy for the first time in my life and decided on that

Never was a huge transformers fan but liked beast wars and the toys always called to me for some reason, couldn't ignore it when I saw him. No regrets, he's awlays been awesome.

Only complaints would be his foot sculpt and design (entire lower leg really) was pretty phoned in.

Also always lost his bat more often than not so bear form was always out of the queston, though thats my own fault + totally worth is cause the bat is awesome

>>

>The OCs were good but fuck every single 84/86 autobot release in CW that wasn't part of a combiner before.

Why? What's wrong with including staple characters in lines/gimmicks that they may not have been part of before? You still got your Combaticons, Stunticons, Constructicons, Aerialbots, and Protectobots out of the deal. You lost absolutely nothing from them throwing shit like a wonky Cyclonus that combines into a giant Galvatron or Optimus that combines into an even bigger Optimus into the mix. You might be interested in them, but perhaps some kid would be.
>>
>>6485457
I'm really fucking glad Takara did Unite Warriors because I couldn't find any of the Hasbro ones anywhere on retail other than the first wave, the repaint wave, and the sky reign wave.
If they hadn't I wouldn't have got anything I wanted from the line.
>>
>>6485418
All they needed to do was blend the toy and cartoon models with some new ideas like they had been doing since MP-10, and Sunstreaker could have turned out really great. Instead we got a clusterfuck of panels and fake kibble with a massive backpack and a bland face.

I know it's not an identical task, but MP Wheeljack managed a similar transformation scheme and nailed it pretty well. Although there are certainly plenty of cartoon purists that piss and moan about the design choices they made there. I'm glad we got him before the current design retardation kicked off.
>>
>>6485463
>bland face
The face is the best part for me, and the one thing about it I really like.
>>
>>6485428
>One of Sunstreaker's defining physical traits is the front of the car becoming his feet, which Universe lacked

Really? His feet?
Dude, come on. Just because it was *A* physical trait doesn't mean it was a defining one. If you can take a trait away from a character, and the character is still perfectly recognizable as the character they're supposed to be, it ain't a defining trait.
>>
>>6485465
Blehhhh. Your opinion I guess. I wish they'd go back to painting them silver and sculpting them with nice, hard edges. These don't really look robotic, they look like they're made out of clay.
>>
>>6485467
>>6485428
Back when Universe kicked off, they were a LOT more liberal about abandoning established design hallmarks of characters. Back then, the line was truly more about re-imagining the character as a modern toy and trying new things. Now it's almost like the Generations line has de-evolved into budget Masterpiece.
>>
>>6485469
>That silver part of Sunstreaker's backpack

Not sure if that is chrome or diecast metal. If it's really chrome, I'd bet that there's going to be a lot of bad chipping
>>
>>6485482
>I'd bet that there's going to be a lot of bad chipping
Chrome doesn't ALWAYS chip, you know. This is just one more thing that TF fans seem to have been conditioned to hate, like paint, or good transformations, or transparent windows, or pinned wheels.

All of the chrome on every MP I own is immaculate. Not sure what you people are doing to yours.

A lot of the hate is justified. It's not unheard of to get paint or chrome on parts that contact other parts and the end result is guaranteed scratching even with the softest handling. People are just reasonably wary.

How do I into display case lighting, /tfg/? I'll finally be moving my collection from the slumber of cardboard boxes to some proper black Billy bookcases with glass doors and I would totally love to have them adorned with some LED lights on each of the 40 or so shelves. What are the best ones for the effect, both in terms of practicability when installing and cost-wise considering how much I'll have to light up? Will I have to cut up holes and install a bunch of electricity extensions and stuff for everything to work together?

I would ideally love something like pic related, although it does look like a fairly expensive and complicated setup.
>>
>>6485469
I get what you're saying, but the overall dimensions of his face are nice and give character. Love the slimness, love the chin.

The backpack is too much of a clusterfuck, though. Hot Rod's backpack (good as the figure in general is) was enough for me, even if I love it. And also, unlike Hot Rod, Sunstreaker is going for over $100 for whatever fucking reason.
>>
>>6485500
What's wrong with it?
>>
>>6485506
Or pic related, which also looks fine. Anyone knows what kind of lights are these and how easy or hard they are to install?
>>

>Sunstreaker is going for over $100 for whatever fucking reason.
More engineering costs, justified by all the random pointless accessories, likely.
>>
>>6485488
I don't understand how transfags came to hate chrome, which is perfectly resilient unless you're going PEAUGH SMASH on them or live inside a lake, but keep loving rubber tires, that are a toss up nowadays, and diecast, which can completely destroy a figure in the long run.
I just find it absurd.

I love all of those three. The thing about chrome is knowing how to use it sparingly, it worked on some Henkei figures rather well.
>>
>>6485510
They based it on the worst-animated episodes of the cartoon, which is why it has that stupid gray spot on the crotch which looks awful and was probably a coloring error. Also, the light stripes on the center of his boots are supposed to indicate highlights/shading, but the morons at Takara mistook it for an actual color difference and it looks ugly as fuck. Also, the clear windshield and gray support piece look ugly, no idea why they did that. Oh, and also, let's not forget that Artfire got a completely new Targetmaster molded from scratch, while Roddy got an 8-year-old remold that looks dumpy and lazy in comparison. I was honestly expecting a toy-deco, which could have looked gorgeous in the vein of MP Artfire, but instead they went cartoon retarded.

>>6485523
Turds also have higher costs to make a profit since they usually turn out smaller batches, and molds are fucking expensive.
>>
>>6485008
it's the spots to shave down since yeah, they decided putting bumps there was a good idea
just be careful how far forward you go so you don't hit the paint
>>
>>6485526
They can be good but I don't want diecast anywhere near anything smaller than a Leader-class littered in ratchets and rubber tires need to be quality unless they rot like the MP-10 ones did some time ago.
That's why I didn't point them out as bad in absolute terms, more like a "may damage if badly done".

>>6485529
Oh yeah, but things like almost every single 3P combiner and Apollyon have some foot-in-mouth retarded design decisions.
>>
>>6485520
This. I own MP Prime (01 and 10), Nemesis, Soundwave, Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, Ironhide and Artfire, all of which have chrome in varying amounts, and all of which looks just as new as the day they came out of the box. I've heard a lot of people had problems with Hot Rod's chrome, so maybe I'll give that a pass, but the fact that literally NONE of my adult-owned figures have any chrome wear, it makes me think people are just too rough with their shit.

>They based it on the worst-animated episodes of the cartoon, which is why it has that stupid gray spot on the crotch which looks awful and was probably a coloring error.

Actually it's because Hot Rod had an impossible transformation when Floro Dery designed him: Hot Rod's pelvis is his car mode's entire windshield. His wrists are the tail lights. His front wheels end up on the back of his arms, despite his front end facing the front of his robot mode. AKOM consistently colored Hot Rod and Rodimus's pelvis like they were a window, as they were meant to be.

In fact, MP09 tributed the fact that Hot Rod's windscreen turns into his crotch by casting the part in Translucent plastic and sculpting in driving compartment detail inside.

Then compromise or something?
I know that is not an option with MPs now because of the ideal that's been put forward by 3Ps using cheating transformations competing with Takara, but what was being done before looked better. The Datsuns and Sideswipe should've been the standard for post-revival MPs; just add the faceplates, the only actual improvement since MP-36.

Messing around with Trypticon's tail gimmick, it seems like Full Tilt is the exact size to store in there, meaning if a figure is longer or wider than him, don't bother putting him in there. The only one of my old deluxes that managed to fit in there is T30 Trailbreaker, and only from the front, from the back he doesn't fit.

A good bench mark for the chest storage are Brawn and the new Bee/Road Rage in their vehicle modes. Anything larger than their dimensions will have trouble going in, which is disappointing since even some TM have issues

Gator mode has almost all the articulation you could expect and need I think, but not having articulated back legs is a slight let down. It's neat that the robot's hip rotation turns into a waist rotation on the croc mode, I'd have expected it to lock up for no good reason. You can even get an ab crunch going for the croc mode if you use the leg joints, though the further you bend the more it looks like he's just coming apart.

...I have no idea why I'm posting about a year old toy everyone has like this.

>>6486641
The beast is the best part of the toy (which is kind of ironic for an action master character), but the bot is pretty neat too. For some reason I really like the way the gator head can curve against his back while it's a backpack. Maybe it just makes it feel more natural as opposed to a toy like Highbrow where the backpack is just this big rigid chunk sticking out.

I find it a little difficult to balance him unfortunately. He doesn't have much of a heel in his feet to help support the backpack. Also the hips are uselessly loose out of the box and needed floor polish.

>>6486640
I kind of avoided Skullsmasher because I knew if I got him I'd want to get Wolfwire and Mindwipe, but I wasn't really keen on getting two other bots with worse QC issues just to complete a set.
>>
>>6486646
I like the trio myself, but we'll see how Mindwipe fares in a few years. Weirdwolf is fine apart from the hinge problem everyone has.
>>
>>6486653
If it's any consolation, making new parts to replace the rubber bits on Mindwipe would be super easy for a third party, and removing the rubber areas is also easy. The one's who are fucked are Skullcruncher and Weirdwolf.

Skullcruncher has a bunch of rubber in the head, so he'd need an entirely new head, plus the cockpit. Weirdwolf has rubber teeth, and rubberin the cockpit hatch. While a new hatch is possible, replacing the head is way more complicated.
>>
>>6486057
>His older character model even gave him side windows on his hips
Where? I don't see them.
>>
>>6486646
Unscrew the gator legs and turn them around when in robot mode. Partsforming notwithstanding it really improves the stability of the robot mode.
>>
>>6486664
What are some notable examples of rubber in older TFs rotting out? I don't think I've had any myself.
>>
>>6486674
Depends a lot on your local weather, I live on a semidesertic area and my childhood Metroplex still has its original wheels.
>>
>>6486677
I suppose desert climate would tend to rot that shit quicker. I'm in the northern midwest and my childhood Kup still has his rubber wheels too.
>>
>>6486674
It varies by figure and region. My RID Optimus lost his wheels ages almost a year after the show, on the other hand, my Primus still has his spikes, WFC Megatron still has his knee spikes, T30 Rhinox, ROTF Bludgeon, etc...
>>
>>6486621
Because figures like Universe Ironhide, Galvatron, and Dinobot are totally not half-assed.
>>
>>6486682
Forgot, my Alternator tracks still has his wheels intact. The reason people are worried for the new figures with rubber is due to the fact that their rubber bits feel too mushy/soft.
>>
>>6486687
Ironhide and Galvatron were over engineered, they pretty much feel like experiments for the movie line, also Galvatron was undersized from voyager class sucking even more.

This looks and works really nicely!

A kit to put the leg on a little arm and let you turn it around without having to pop the whole leg off is something nonnef should make, that would be great for this toy.
>>
>>6486687
Dinobot is pretty good except for the weapons and that spring on the dino neck panel. The deco was bad but Takara fixed it. Galvatron could've been good in its original unaltered Voyager design and Ironhide was just overcomplicated with a bad neck and a paint mistake. None of these were really half-assed.
>>
>>6486687
Dinobot was and still is a pretty solid figure, Ironhide and Galvatron were filled with issues but both of them were brilliantly elevated in their Henkei versions. Either way, your "there were some bad figures here and there, therefore pre-CW CHUG is definitely worse than the hollow unpainted stuff we have today" logic is completely senseless.
