You call G2 a failure, but it sure wasn't because of his own demerits. We don't actually know if it was a failure AT ALL, but rather we have many hints pointing towards a decision taken by LEGO because of a long list of reasons that don't involve any of G2's weaknesses.

I hate LEGO because of how bad they handled the enormous potential of G2, but G2 itself was amazing thanks to its sets and a nice (albeit way too simple) story, who left room for a lot of headcanons.

I think it was poor marketing. They relied too heavily on G1 fans to promote G2, but a lot of G1 fans either grew away from bionicle or were really skeptical about the reboot.

I'm going to be talking about the first wave of sets here.

Plus, the story wasn't as mystical, or immediate to get into. Where before you had G1 with MNOG and the comic series, which were just oozing with lore and detail. G2 had the web animations, and a mobile game, both of which lacked the depth and intrigue for anyone to really get invested in.

But a bigger culprit could be collectables, and villains.
For the first wave of G1 you had the masks to collect, just like your favorite Toa! But what's this? That box had a green mask in it.

And that's how most collections grew.
Compare that to G2 where you just have it. No extra hunt, no anticipation of opening more kanohi boxes, no desire to get one that's not your favorite.

As for villains, G1 had variety, with the Rahi and all sorts of light technic builds.
And G2 had a single villain set, and repetitive skull spider builds everywhere.

Anyone got annoyed how in the latter half of Bionicle most characters were nerfed and/or not quite being themselves and/or mutated in some way?

>Toa Hordika: they're like the Toa you know...but they can't wear masks or use their elemental powers properly
>Toa Inika: it's Jaller and co as Toa! Except they don't have a real headpiece, their masks are made of rubber and look weird, and they can't use their element without it combined with lightning

I don't think the story being confusing/crappy is what hurt sales. I'd say it was having too much story, as blasphemous as that sounds. Most toys are bought by parents and grandparents for kids, so when little jimmy asks for "Toa Matoro Mahri" it just kinda filters into older folks' heads as jargon. I do agree that a lot of characters were given sub-par stories, but most kids didn't get that deep into the lore anyways, so I don't think that was a big deal for sales.

To be honest the whole thing about "these sets aren't what the characters really look like, they have been mutated/transformed/rebuilt" was one of my pet peeves with the line. And it went all the way back to '01 with the diminished Tohunga, even if we didn't know at the time.
It's like, hey want a set of Karzahni? Okay, here's him when he turned into a bug, now have fun. Oh and this other character you like so much? This is just his Tuesday body, he had like five other forms but we won't release them.
The rapid succession of set lines did necessitate this method, though, and in the case of the Makuta, they basically had to be nerfed to make it seem like the Toa stood a chance against them.

You're right, I did forget the Matoran in general and Karzahni. I think it was both a set and story problem. On one hand, designers got overboard with weird shit, which might or not be Lego's fault (the Rahaga reek of "let's cut costs and reuse molds), though some of them are pretty hard to justify, like the Mistika Makuta' Masks or anything in the Karzahni set.
On the other end is the story team, who was tasked to find a justification for any question or oddity the increasingly weird sets brought. But they can't be excused either since they abused the "Character got mutated by (insert magic substance)" explanation when they could've just as well come up with something different.

As they say, poor communication kills. Greg did say he found out about some things about the sets late and had to go back and retcon or change stuff, like Mutran's mask. Maybe if the set team / story team communication was a bit better these sorts of incidents would've been decreased a bit.

I really like Technic, love how the modern sets feel so complete, with the new panels providing a lot of coverage that make the sets feel like the real things. Back in the day the panels had a lot of gaps and the sets felt very "skeletal"-like with their interiors exposed. It had its charm, but they didn't really look like "real" stuff that it was advertised to be like.

I've wanted to build a CCBS Brutaka for my autistic Bonkleverse myself but you and I are gonna need more than Rocka to build him. Brutaka has a pretty unique look and colour scheme, and dark blue CCBS is quite rare, existing in only two shell sizes.

Here are the shields. Left has the stress marks, right has the scratch. Barely noticeable imo, so I'm really stoked about it. Since these things aren't and but that softer plastic that Lego used for stuff like the Metru masks, they could have easily been ruined. And a nice little bonus is that Xa was my favorite Krana design, and lucky me, I had a Gahlok one lying around from a mask lot I got a while ago.

No. Lego is pretty much done with Constraction if you ask me judging by how badly G2G and from the looks of it on here Ultrabuilds are doing. They just screwed the pooch with making the standard set at least 20 bucks. Nobody is going to want to shovel out 40+ dollars so their kid has two characters to pit against each other. Face it. The bad guys are at least the same size as the heroes and can easily steal their vehicle. C'mon now. Tahu and a lone Skull Spider for 20 or two 7.99 starter nexo sets, one from the good guys and one from the bad guys? That's way more affordable and you get at least 3 if not 4 Minifigures. Face it, as much as you and I love Constraction it just isn't as cost effective for what you get. I personally blame the constant creep of the standard figures getting larger and larger. The Toa Mata are the size of the Protectors and the Masters are essentially lesser Titans. I reiterate that if they were scaled down or used the Mixel system, they'd probably sell better.

Jaller Mahri really is one of the finer Toa sets.
From the tasteful color scheme (yellow on dark red would've looked awkward, I think), the awesome sword, the 2-in-a-box idea, the mask design matching the chest armor and of course the based Arthron, one of the best masks since 2001 along Hahli's Faxon.
Sets just lost that love and attention to detail after 2007, with only very few gems here and there.

Tip top kek, at least use a Toa. You call CCBS juniorized, I call it minimal. The greebling in G1 got ridiculous with all the different textures and having the freedom to leave a piece of armor blank if I wish to do so is frankly liberating. Besides, you're not supposed to build a Bionicle figure leaving all shells naked. There's a reason pic related and other add-ons were made. CCBS shells are just the base armoring.
Anyway, no one said you should build a purely CCBS model. CCBS works mighty well when integrated with Technic, and I agree that seeing more System fused into it would be great, but as you said it is unlikely

I think the add-ons were fine by themselves, problem is that they weren't used well. Tahu Uniter whom you posted is the biggest offender of them all, you should use 2 types of add-ons (3 at the very most if they're similar to eachother) and he uses 3 plus the unification pieces as thigh armor.
Pohatu Uniter, who uses only 2 textures (Vorox shells and crystal add-ons), looks a lot cleaner. You can use any Master as example too since all they have is the piston add-on and special stuff like Onua's shoulder armor.

I don't disagree (especially given the huge amount of modifications I gave to my sets, but I did the same with G1, so), but I'm fairly sure the shit budget they had to work with was a bigger factor than you might think. Take a look at the concept art and you'll see how much cohesive the characters look. They even had planned some neat pieces like a metal-like shell for Umarak. But it seems Lego went all "Nu-uh" with a lot of good ideas they had.
Frankly I'm impressed they still managed to make sets like Umarak or Master Kopaka or Onua.

I didn't read them, but I don't think they mention anything about the Skull guys being undead. They simply come across as a race of assholes, kinda like Bionicle's orcs. On the other hand, Lego Magazine hints they're undeads controlled by Kulta, but that doesn't make sense because who brought Kulta back to life then? Makuta? But in the books Kulta and the others were already alive when they invaded Okoto and met Makuta.
I see that BS01 threw their hands up in the air and tried to mix the two explanations the best way they could, but reading the page just feels more confusing.
This type of shit happened in G1 and HF too, but at least with G1 there was some authority that declared that "nope, Lego Magazine just made that up, not canon".

This is one of the pretty good Pohatu revamps. If you want other pics I have a bunch I have saved across the web, but if I had a suggestion I'd say you should try searching for "Bionicle 2016 revamps" or "Bionicle Uniter revamps". Most MOCs with the Uniter torso are revamps of the Toa themselves so you'll find plenty of different builds.
And, hint hint, I haven't tried it yet myself but it appears the Inika torso works perfectly with the Uniter torso, it's uncanny.

I read all three of the books and it is explicitely said in the third one that Kulta and Skull Basher are members of a different species inhabitating another island, and many of them were banished in Okoto's underground when they tried (and failed) to invade the island. I would scrap the whole Spherus Magna thing and stay on the MU too. All the Agori stuff just never seemed interesting to me: I could never shake off the feeling that nothing we saw had anything to do with Bionicle, despite the story insisting that everything had started there. We were so familiar with the MU I'm not sure how they expected such a drastic location change to work and be accepted.

Modified this guy a bit since last time I posted him, I replaced all old hands with hf ones and corrected his ribcage so he's now able to praise the sun right.
I could still make real knees to enhance his posing skills, or use maximum size Technic bars to make him a bit higher, but I think I can't really do anything more...

That's my "test" Titan, I first built him back when I got the skirmix set, I improved him so much over the years that the only piece left of my original set is the skull. I had a "dark age" (dunno if you call it like this too) during some time, but as I'm a compulsive buyer nothing could stop me from getting some kgs of loose pieces and continue building my nightmarish mocs.
Btw he has a reaper/hammer, a crossbow shield and a cloak, I should put them on to see what's up with his new enhancements.
And inb4 someone ask for another like this: I have three other not-even-WIP somewhere, one will definitely appear around here someday.
I also helped a friend to build two other, they're a bit weird but I could take some pics.
Right now I'm trying to learn how to build quadrupedal animals that could compete with this one, because he's supposed to be a hunter but this is like nuking ants for now.

Not really, no. Star Wars might stick around for a little while, but it's floundering. Sets from over a year ago are still sitting on shelves. It's probably got one or two waves left in it. Bionicle flopped so hard they didn't even carry it through the 3 year plan. It would be financially irresponsible for a company to pursue something that doesn't sell. I think Enlighten is releasing some kind of bootleg bionicle/ccbs line next year, and there's the Mega Construx Pokemon stuff, but I doubt we'll be seeing any new buildable action figures besides next year.
