If I shade FA:G hair pieces, is it better to preshade the areas, or should I post-shade it later with pastels (especially crevices of the hair strands)?
>>
>>6319840
Yo, anons, speaking of pastels, can you link me to one I could buy?
>>
>>6319844
Look for artist grade brands. They should be the hard chalky kind, not the "oil pastels" kind. That depends entirely on your area and what you can get. Then you grind the pastels slowly and gently with fine grain sandpaper to minimize the particle size.

How do modellers paint the FA Girl arms properly? Koto's plastic might not take to sawing the joints into C-shapes and just snapping them into place between the limbs, right? (Unlike gunpla ABS joints where you can do that sawing mod to make painting easier...)

See these parts from the Materia manual, I need ideas on doing this without the plastic breaking on me, thanks.

>>6320006
You have a couple of options. If you're seam welding, there's not much chance of paint getting dangerously into those marked parts unless you stick the nozzel directly into her joints and fire away. You can sand the exposed pegs after you've painted and it should be just fine.

If you don't want to seam weld, then masking the moving parts (the pegs andport openings in either half of the limbs, particularly) before painting and/or sanding them gently after should allow them the full freedom of movement.

Thank you for the feedback, but I'd like to point out that the arm isn't even sanded and primed, let alone painted, and I fucked up the finish on the hair which is why it looks so thick and caused some of the paint to peel. Also stupid phone cam won't focus any harder on the hair

He was trying to cut through the thick parts of the sprue with the tips of the nippers and they eventually broke.

Godhand and similar single edged nippers use a very hard, inflexible steel so they can sharpen it to a high degree. Unfortunately this means they tend to break more often than just dent or bend when used inccorectly.

So "Bend the limb, spray a tack coat, let dry, straighten, spray a tack coat on the other side of the joint, then re-bend and spray a tack coat again, ad infinitum" is not gonna work out nicely?
>>
>>6320806
No, build&paint the peanut knee hinge, assemble the legs around it, mask whatever's sticking out and paint the upper and lower legs.
>>
>>6320810
So basically, if I am doing a pearl coat on this, I should finish up to the topcoat stage for the joint, then mask it all up?

FYI you have to wetsand the primer and paint layers to prep for pearl coat, btw, so I'm not sure how the masking will stand up to all those steps for the limb parts.

The problem is not the Tamiya tape lifting all the paintwork, it's the part where masking and finished joint could withstand the limb parts going through all the paintwork and movement.

That said I wonder how Estelle or all the other nip modellers managed to prime/paint the arms/legs in one piece with the joint inside already.

Finding a 3D girl who's
a) not disgusting
b) a good presenter/orator
c) deeply invested in model building
is not easy. It's like the old threads they used to have in 4chan's younger days: you can only have 2. I'm sure there are a few girls out there who fit the bill, but for KotoUS, 2 out of 3 is good enough, and c) can be covered by someone else off-screen. Hell, even finding a guy who fulfills all 3 criteria is probably going to be pretty tough in its own right.

Personally, I wouldn't mind learning about building and painting FAGs from a chill onii-san-type senpai, but let's be real here: most of us would rather learn from a chill onee-san-type.

Not that D.Va over there is even close to an onee-san, but she'll still attract way more attention than any cool nerdbro would.

Also, any guide to make a smiling faceplate for Baselard?
>>
>>6321354
I recommend Architect.
>>
>>6321406

1. Create two-part mold from silicone putty using a faceplate.
2. Brush silicone with vaseline.
3. Smoosh in your clump of epoxy putty of choice.
4. Let cure partially until it's "stiff enough" to be cut/drilled but will retain its shape when handled. What time depends on your brand of epoxy putty.
5. Draw in and carve out the mouth area however big you planned the facial expression to be.
6. If you have some kind of closed mouth smiling or whatever mostly-lips expression, carve and add more putty gently, you can blend the edges into your copy faceplate a bit, but be prepared to sand.

OR

7. If you have an open mouth expression, cut away however large the mouth area you will need for it.
8. Let the faceplate cure some more with your removed area.
9. Push in a new ball of epoxy putty through the hole and carve however you like it. You may add smaller bits of epoxy putty for the funny front teeth and tongue/mouth cavity look.
10. Just remember with the open mouth, if you see the tongue or whatever, that piece is slightly angled inward.

11. Sanding and finishing.
>>
>>6321406
What smiling expressions do you have in mind? Are you gonna crib expressions from the manga panels?
>>
>>6321460
12. With your new cured faceplate master, make a new two part silicone mold, whether silicone putty or rubber. If using resin, add air vents and a pour duct into the mold where applicable.

13. Prep mold with vaseline.

14. If you know how to rotocast/slush cast with polyester or urethane resins, then pour/brush on the resin into the recesses and swill it around so it fills in the detail areas, then finish up with the rest of the resin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAWgrwYq0iY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tnh1v-TOJ5c

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USvTtyaj6Go

OR

15. Otherwise just pour the resin into the two part mold normally.

OR

16. If you have epoxy resin, then you manually smear the resin into the halves of the mold, and clamp them together.

17. Fix up your air bubbles and imperfections with some more sanding, carving and epoxy putty.

18. Sanding with sponges, surface prep, priming, painting, etc.
>>
>>6321460
Im too fucking poor right now to buy silicone. FUck. Ill get into this once I sort my money issues.
>>
>>6321473
This is great, and you seem to be quite knowledgeable in this field.

Do you happen to know the steps for making silicone casted parts?
>>
>>6321079
For the elbows I used a metal paint so it adheres pretty well despite not being primed heavily, and in this case I had to use a narrow brush in order to apply the paint without touching the other parts.

For the knees I primed the legs twice, once with the leg fully extended and another with the leg completely bent to expose the ends of the joint. Applying paint follows the same principle.

However, I'd only recommend this if you assembled it without sanding and are afraid of disassembling it without risking breakage, otherwise I'd just use blutac to block the peg holes and prime/paint before assembling.

even if she herself is not personally all that interested in model stuff, it does not mean she doesn't do this stuff as part of a job. this is japan we are talking about her, she can't not do the job just because she does not like it. as long as she looks good, presents well and at least has prior skill in painting fine details, she is good to go for them to hire.
>>
>>6321473
>>6321460

have not tried this little shortcut on faceplates yet, but you could add a tiny ball of silicone putty mold to the mold you make of the original face in the mouth area before doing any casting. this way when it sets you can make your copy with a premade hole you can then sculpt in details with putty as you please.

used this in the past to make 'engravings' on stuff so i figure in theory it should work here too.

>>
>>6321874
ok so you make a mold out of some kind of silicone putty or something similar right? you press the object you want to copy into the putty and let it set then you remove the object and can proceed to make copies of the object with the mold. But what if there was an imperfection in the mold?

A dent in the surface of the mold will result in an ugly bump on the copy, likewise a bump in the mold results in a dent or hole in the copy. That is what I am suggesting, you purposefully 'ruin' the mold by adding a little extra of the silicone putty in the area you wish to cut out.

The types of mold putty I have used all bonds together when curing regardless of if the other mold is completely cured, it will still stick. This is why you use release agents like olive oil or powder when forming a 2 part mold, otherwise you got to cut the object out of the mold, thus ruining the mold.

So as simply as I can possibly get it in my mind, instead of cutting out a hole in the copied face plate to make a mouth with some sculpting epoxy putty, you can just make the hole when casting the copy by just adding it to the mold itself.

but again I personally never tried this myself for this sort of application. If this is still confusing, please specify what exactly is confusing because I can't figure out any other way to describe this without that perspective.

What I think is weird about her manicure is how can she do all that painting without getting any paint on her nails, unless she isn't doing all the work herself?
>>
>>6322191
I paint plamo with manicured nails. If you use a decent topcoat at all, acrylic paint just comes right off it with a little scrubbing or picking.

Erm, you shouldn't be getting much or any paint on your nails while hand-painting unless you're sloppy. She probably uses gloves for airbrushing.

Dont women have better motor skills suited for working on little details and stuff?

Also i might be wrong but i believe this series is meant to capture the female audience more than us. I mean, even if it wont stop us from having fantasies about her, Estelle looks more like the girl that would get along with my sister rather than pandering to me.
>>
>>6322232
That's the first I've heard of anything like that. I wasn't aware either sex was supposed to have finer motor skills.

But do you really think a series of models of robot girls with teeny tiny skirts - when they have skirts - lots of exposed skin, and a ton of girlbot on girlbot action in the anime is supposed to appeal to girls?

Really?

>>
>>6322239
I agree that it's not directly made to appeal to girls but that doesn't mean it can't. I think what that anon was trying to say is using Estelle is a way for them to try to appeal to that market in the sense of making it look more approachable for girls while at the same time not putting off the core male audience.
>>
>>6322239
The movie Aliens taught me that women have better fine motor control and reaction times. And literally everything I've ever learned has been from the Alien franchise.

>But do you really think a series of models of robot girls with teeny tiny skirts - when they have skirts - lots of exposed skin, and a ton of girlbot on girlbot action in the anime is supposed to appeal to girls?

It was meant from the get go to appeal to the male audience. What i mean is that the youtube channel gives me the impression to be made to capture the female audience, even the anime gives this vibe; Ao is easy on the eyes but not exactly a moeblob waifu.

Anyway i might be reaching the wrong conclusions but that's what i feel now.

>That's the first I've heard of anything like that. I wasn't aware either sex was supposed to have finer motor skills.

Hystorically omen have had more time working on fine details on clothing and other things like that, not that men cant achieve the same results with dedication and experience. Also playing with dolls has been considered a gilrs only thing so we're the ones breaking new ground here.

Been cosidering joining one of those doll owner clubs that only old ladies join and show them my shinki/FAG collection so they can teach me their ways.

Not what I mean at all. It's a japanese culture thing that is very hard to put into words. She is expected to actually do the job she is hired to do without complaint. Simply toys is the distrib for Singapore's koto stuff. They have pretty ok preorder prices but full retail is nuts.

Also, I'm not sure wtf they're doing, because they spent money pushing FAG at cons and filming that bs 3dpd stuff for youtube, but hardly have any actual stock on display.

They have started to stock Koto exclusive Cupoche stuff but still no sign of FAG bonuses. Still gotta give proxies my money for those. Guess ST doesn't want money.

>>
Any place where i can buy paint for my FAGs that ships international?
>>
>>6323415
it's more then possible to customize bandai stuff, but they aren't as customization friendly in terms of simple parts swap without additional work to make them fit. And if this girl is anything like Fumina was, then she will be a good bit bigger then the FAGs and towers over HG gundams. The armor is 100% a part of the figure and can't be stripped down to the extent of FAGs OOB. The face also requires work to look decent.

At the end of the dayI guess the most imprtant thing to ask is what do you mean by 'customizing oppurtunities'? What is the extent of how you customize?
if you mean like this >>6320226 then you probably want to wait till she comes out and we can see just how she is.

To clarify, when the leg is extended you fully prime the back of the leg, and when the leg is bent you prime it from above and from below in order to get the maximum coverage. Also you can't prime it too thickly or else it will make the joints more stiff, and cause the paint to wear off then the joint is moved

>>
>>6324816
no it does not technically apply to spray paints which is why i asked all the details. However as you have surmised yourself in your retrospec, layers are however the bigger issue.

There is another issue, Rustoleum, you are using a non model kit spray paint. Most paints not intended for model kits are often thicker then what would normally be used. This means you need to be even more careful with how thick of layers you are spraying.

My recommendation after striping her is to test the srpay on some spoons first, your goal is to try to spray as far away as possible and do NOT try to completely color the spoon/kit in one shot. That is what the layers are for, you come back when it has dried and spray on another extra thin layer.

I have not used rustoleum on model kits so feel free to take my recomendations with some salt, but I have done this with paints and primers of other brands like Krylon that are not model kit intended. the thinner your layers, the better. It is possible to get a result that looks good, but takes more care then a can of tamiya or testors.
>>
>>6324843
Hmmm. Don't have a paint removal agent though.

Could test the colours on some spare runners to get used to painting in thin layers.
>>
>>6324854
no alcohol? simple green? not sure how resitant rustoleum would be to those but worth a shot.

Just get it from HLJ. Between sales tax, latecomer fees, and saving space in your luggage, you might as well jist pay for shipping.

I need guidance with this piece. I put the white collar on (L5) first and then the grey (N20) but nothing aligns right. It's either one or the other that snaps in and I keep double checking my body. Is there a particular way you have to put this on?
>>
>>6327333
I believe the ruffle snaps in and the grey piece is just a peg. Just glue it.
>>
>>6327333

Had a lot of trouble with Architect's collar too. There is one way it goes in, and once in it's really secure, but damn if I didn't fiddle with it for ages before it finally sat right.
>>
>>6320215
Do you have the link to the original page for the custom boobs?
>>

What I've always done is put the back nubs on the frill in first, then push down on it until the square holes in the front align and slide the brooch peg into place.

Try Jungle or Kinokuniya in Little Tokyo. If you're up to going to Frank & Sons I know there's one vendor that has a bunch of plamo and should have some.
>>
>>6327808
the jungle or any shop close to them doesnt have it, i frequent the place almost every week. ive even begging the owner of neo happyland from chinatown to start investing on armor girls / frame arms girls kits but he hasnt said anything concrete

Jungle did start stocking them, though they sell out really quickly. Last time I was there, they had a few Innos and that's it.

The vendor in Frank and Sons who has them is called Toy Arena. they're right between aisles 700 and 800 on the aisle the cuts down the middle of the numbered ones.

Keep in mind that their prices are pretty much what you'd pay to ship the same model from Japan, so if you want to buy a lot of girls, it might be better to hit up amiami or HLJ if you don't mind the wait.

I really regret not grabbing Innocentia and Architect when I had the chance. Been trying to snag them on YJA since they're out of stock everywhere online, but no luck so far. They'll do another print run right? Or am I going to have to settle for blue Innocentia whenever she comes out?

>>

We don't even know if there's going to be a series, but there'll be no more blurays. I can't really see this getting a second season.

As for Gourai-Kai, yeah, I'm sure she'll be released on her own at some point - you don't cast a brand new model mold and then only use it once. It'll probably be like a year after the last BD comes out though.

Nub marks can be smoothed out with sanding but they will never disappear unless you paint.
>>
>>6330016

>>
>>6330035
Sand paper. Try to shave them with an hobby knife first.

>>
>>6330013
>>6330012
Despite what the latest episode of FAG said, the fact is that Kotobukiya kits sometimes have bad fits, and this can be made worse when you get their stuff overseas because temperature conditions while they're in transit might cause the plastic to warp a bit.
>>
>>6330051
I was pretty irked at this after having to deal with Gourai's hips and Innocentia's arm pegs. But they can't exactly anti-shill their products, can they...

Sand paper that mentions it's usable wet. I usually use 400 grit for removing leftovers and then 800 grit for smoothing. I keep some 1500 grit around too but I rarely use it.
>>
>>6330101
>I keep some 1500 grit around too but I rarely use it.
I use 1000 and 2000 grit mainly, but then again I haven't made an investment in topcoat or paint supplies so I usually try to restore the plastic's finish after nub removal
>>
>>6330080
If they're flat try scratching them with your nail or giving them a good wipe with a microfiber cloth (the fuzzy kind).

>>6330101
If you're dry sanding does waterproof paper offer any advantage over the normal stuff?
>>

>>
Is it possible somewhere to order those additonal equipments or replacement parts?
>>
>>6330261
Waterproof is better for wet sanding. That's the whole point. It doesn't change how well it sands, but it does collect all the plastic dust instead of letting it float into the air and all over everything.
