For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Final topcoating done for my group build project. Just going to let everything cure for a few days/week before I re-assemble this bad boy. I can't wait, everything turned out really good imo. There's a few spots I noticed that could've benefited from a third coat of paint but it's not awful and it's in places that I don't really care too much about. What do you guys think?

I want to start painting. Is Mr. Color a good brand?
>>
>>6306566
It depends. Do you own an airbrush?
>>
>>6306525
As always you're doing excellent work. Also was building it as much of a pain as it looks like it was?

>>6306566
Mr. Color is their airbrush line, check the guide if you want a quick overview.
>>
>>6306568
No. Up until now all I've done is snap together, but I want to start making better models. I was going to do manual brushing because airbrushes are expensive.
>>
>>6306470
Tyranid colour scheme, trying to texture it or something. Like an infested gundam kit or something. Maybe with an organic looking kit.

Basically more organic and boney-fleshy kinda thing.

Prepainted plamo is the best way to learn how to glue things neatly because you basically have to glue painted parts without any mistakes, the first time or you ruin the paintjob.

Instant extra-thin cement is very useful since it dries almost immediately.

Also, half of the surface detail you see are actually tiny separate bits that you meed to glue on top of the fuselage using manual for positioning (as there are no holes or anything to guide you). They do show where to drill some of the holes you need.
>>
>>6306578
Then Mr Color is not for you, at least not right now. While you can do minor hand brushing with it, it is not the kind of hand brushing you have in mind.

You're going to want to stick to water based acrylics.
>>
>>6306629
The Tomy Tech VF31 you did was a prepainted kit right? Also what glue are you using? I've basically made it a goal to get some of every type of glue imaginable.
>>
>>6306636
Thanks. Is there any particular brand on hobbywave that's good? I realize I can just look at the labels at my hobby shop, but I'm making a hobbywave order now and I figure I might as well get as much as I can.

Yes, it is prepainted. It is much better engineered than these Hueys (no giant seam running across the thing for one) but it has its own challenges.

The ibo 1/100 line is dead. None of the S2 grunts got anything and neither did the full city, flauros, or kimaris vidar.
>>
>>6307604
I think it's bit soon to call it dead given that Lupus Rex was just released in February. I think it's entirely possible we could get some more out of the Full Mechanics line. Honestly, the only S2 kit I care about getting the 1/100 upgrade is Full City. Other than that, I just want some big ol' 1/100 Rodis. But we both know that's not going to happen.

been cleaning my eclipse with 99% iso alcohol for 2+ years, nothing happened so far

even lacquer thinner will not damage your o-rings unless you literally soak them in it overnight

as for metal, the only things that could possibly discolor it would be bleach or ammonia but there is no reason for you to clean your airbrush with those things

windex has ammonia iirc but too little to do anything, so its safe

Total damages:
Kit boxes are fully soaked, might need to toss them if they don't dry up quickly.
Manuals are also wet but are currently drying on paper towels so I am pretty sure I will be able to save them.

Undamaged:
Sprue bags have water in them but plastic is fine. Given the state of the box I expected some breakage.

>not only will it have full transformation, they will sell optional LEDs for it
Jesus Yamato, I can't imagine how much of an engineering nightmare that would be.

On another note, does this mean that they can reuse its frame for an RG Nu? The Unicorn's probably going to need a new inner frame, unless they want to make it even more of a hand grenade by working with the modified Mk II frame they used for the Sinanju.

I dunno, give it a shot. I didn't try it on that RX-78 specifically, but I have built some of Bandai's thin-gate kits without cutters, and they came out ok. It's your first kit, and it's a super cheap one at that, so be experimental with it. You can probably fix any potential nubs with an xacto later anyway.

use airmail with amiami (or DHL it was cheap as fuck for two day delivery of the GM Sniper II) to Australia, I use it a lot and its only like 600 yen more than SAL. Airmail takes about 6-14 days to arrive in Brisbane. Fastest i've had is a 5 day turnaround including a weekend for the MG Thunderbolt Gundam Ver Ka.

idk why you guys use hlj so much if you want express/faster shipping or even cheap shipping for that matter as amiami is far superior, HLJ is good for storing things in the warehouse for ages.

>I'm expecting there to be two releases for the Unicorn Mode and the Destroy Mode.
You expect wrong. This is RG, they are going to pull out all the stops even if it's really fucking stupid.

>Shit, the MGs have problems replicating it.
The MG is actually really old, you shouldn't consider it all Bandai's capable of. MG Victory has a much more complicated transformation and it's pretty much about the size RG Unicorn will be. Similarly they basically nailed the transformation with PG Unicorn (and arguably the MC Unicorn), so it just comes down to scaling that down like they did with Zeta 2.0 and RG Zeta.

I'm glad that the fanbase's near universal reaction to this announcement was "haha this fucking thing is going to explode" by the way. Expectations are so rock bottom that if the thing has any stability whatsoever people are going to be blown away.

I'd not be surprised to see this. Considering the Unicorn is going to be the next statue at Odaiba I'd imagine this becomes a a kit of that statue, like the RG RX-78-2 takes after the statue that was there before.

Relatively new to Gundam, been building for a couple months and focusing on HGs, and a couple RGs. Also dabbled in some FAGs.

Basically, I'm getting a Perfect Grade soon.

My options are:
RX-178 (white)
MBF-02 Strike Rouge
RX-0 Unicorn (obviously)
Astray Red Frame

So, the question is, what do I go for? Are some easier than others?

>Expectations are so rock bottom that if the thing has any stability whatsoever people are going to be blown away.

The sinanju had no real transforming parts and its size should have made it relatively solid and look what happened with it. While reusing the mkII frame with extensions lent to some of its problems, certain parts should not have been as bad as they were (like the wrists).

I get the feeling they're going to go lazy on some if the engineering quality like they did on the sinanju because it will sell regardless.

>>
>>6312418
Really depends, if the material is a straight build cleaning off the grease and such from the molding is fine polystyrene and abs plastic isn't toxic to the fish but the grease that stuck on the plastic from the molding should still be washed off, if its painted it requires a water safe sealer to prevent any harm from the fish, but that's too excessive in my opinion. But just having aquarium friendly water sealer around is always a safe bet.

I've used tamiya acrylics for painting my model, will a lacquer topcoat do its job?
>>
>>6313335
The chemical strength of hobby paints is in this order
Acrylics<Enamel<Lacquer
If you applied Lacquer onto Acrylics, it will attack the paint beneath and make it blurry.

Note that this applies to plastic modelling hobby paints only. Other types of paints (crafts, diy, automotive, etc.) may use these terms differently.

I'd test it out on a runner, but if you wait at least a week for the paint to cure and are very careful to not apply too much on the first coat it should be ok

For someone who is looking to get into airbrushing, is the rec in the guide still good?

I see the Badger Patriot recommended in a few places online and for compressors most of what I've read is "don't skimp but otherwise it's not a huge deal".

I can float $200-250 comfortably on a setup, but since I'm an amateur I don't want to make a stupid buying mistake. Like there's some talk of a tank + compressor combo which seems like it might be convenient in the long run.

So is there any reason why a beginner (I have under 2 years experience, only built two models and a Frame Arms release) should stray away from doing MG models?

I built a RG X105 and it feels like it topples far too easily, it's weighted unevenly and if you don't have an action base, you kind of have to pose him chest and arms out for it to balance. Not to mention the Striker pack is fragile as fuck.

I built the EW Sandrock and it stands fine, can pose within it's limits and is weighted evenly. I built it after the X105 and enjoyed the building process far more as well.

I regret that mistake.
I am considering buying another just to paint and have one that's not damaged. It was a fun kit to build.

Is there anything to note when working with varnishes? I messed around with spare parts with this today. I thinned it like I would for paint, and the results seem to feel matte instead of gloss.

>>
>>6315401
What are safety nubs?
>>
>>6315409
Look at the V fin. Notice how it's not pointy the way it should be? That's because of the safety nubs. You normally want to cut those off before finishing the model. You know, unless you just like the way they look.
>>
>>6315413
Hm, yeah that does make sense. I noticed they had those on the finished product photographed on the box, so I guess I didn't think twice about leaving them. Honestly, I had so many 'close calls' with this model that I'm just glad the thing looks like a finished product. Haha.
>>
>>6315419
Leaving them on is ultimately a matter of (shit) taste, but for the love of god do take a knife and/or sand paper to those nubs. Looking at them hurts.
>>
>>6315421
They are hard to see 'in person' - to me at least, but looking at the pic definitely indicates that I'm an amateur. I took care of the nubs on the hands/knees, and it looks significantly cleaner.

I'm not shilling Samsung. On most devices, Kekrean or otherwise, that rotation information is stored in metadata which is fine in basically every situation but 4chan's specific one because it strips all metadata. It's been a known occurrence for ages, blaming the phone and not just rotating your shit is newfaggotry.

My main problem is that my creativity seems to work differently. I can see shapes I have and re-purpose them through painting them differently, gluing them to different parts and doing other such mods, and I can try to recreate designs from other things using primitive shapes, but I have a hard time adding details to an existing design.
How does one practice the art of adding details like this, not in terms of skill but in terms of design?
>>
>>6315893
basically, you have what we call, "lack of imagination" in that you have difficulty in the synthesis of ideas. Modification comes easy because you already have a base design which imposes limitations, a challenge which your mind accepts and then figures for a solution for.

The best way to rectify this is to practice, but that is hard in this medium so I'd recommend trying to do it in another medium such as drawing or painting. Creating something from nothing is actually harder than modifying some base template, even if that base template is bare bones.

Like the other guy said, I would probably try sketching it out first. If you have poor drawing abilities, print out lineart of the MS at 50% opacity and draw on top of that. As far as getting ideas, study other mecha series (especially more detailed real robot stuff) and see what kinds of mechanical details they use. Heck, even look at other kitbashers and customizers' kits. You can get a lot of inspiration from looking at other peoples' work and make it your own by modifying or using it differently.

So I bought an airbrush and it gets here tomorrow.

For practice with it is Testors alright? I've heard it's not great for actual gunpla painting but to acclimate to using the thing I'd like to practice on paper and spoons and spare parts from other kits.

For actual paint should I go for Tamiya acrylics or try laquer stuff? Based on what I've read that's kind of on me.

lacquer is fast drying and is my preference, but you might want both types.
with an airbrush, you use very little paint anyway, so instead just buy the paints you want and spray some color references spoons/plastic material
>>
>>6316385

Alright, thanks. I was thinking of lacquer personally because of the fast dry and the durability that I read about, but since I have no experience I figured I'd ask.

I've got a mask already that I use for topcoating, so killing myself with fumes is luckily not going to happen
