For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

Awesome! I made it on the thread image for the third time now. If you guys want I can take some better photos that have a much less cluttered background.

Asking again because the last thread ended:
What color panel lining looks good on dark blues/navy blues?
One kind anon suggested a dark silver, which I was leaning towards initially.
>>
>>6199995
Depends if you want them to pop out or be darker. Also are you planning on painting the kit?

I don't intend to, currently, but I do plan to topcoat it whenever I get done assembling it.

I'm not sure whether I'd like it to stand out or be more subdued. It really isn't that detailed around most of the Navy parts, honestly. Most of the detailed areas are white or red.

I'd even considered a lighter blue.
>>
>>6200010
In that case I'd say do a pen wash of like a dark gray or even a touch darker. It'll still pop the panel lines but itll be more subtle than using a gundam marker or anything like that.
>>
>>6200023
>>6200023
Sounds legit. I'll start working on it whenever I get this dude all assembled.

Side note: panel lining should come after a gloss coat, right, or can you panel line before a gloss? I'm still fairly new to this.
>>
>>6200039
depends. you don't have to worry too much cause your not painting. The only thing I can say is DO NOT USE ENAMEL. You'll crack your kit into a million pieces.
Get some tamiya acrylics, or testors acrylics and make a quick pin wash with some rubbing alcohol. After the wash you can take a qtip with a little rubbing alcohol and gently clean up anything you don't want. Wait a day or two and then clear coat it.
>>
>>6200055
I've used enamel for panel lines and haven't had this issue you speak of.

Cool. Thanks for the advice. I'll hit up hobby lobby when it comes to that. I found out that they carry tamiya paints the other day.
>>
>>6200062
Then you sir are about the luckiest guy out there, or you paint and seal your kits before using them. Using enamel thinner, or even lighter fluid near bandai plastic is a pretty big nono.

>Using enamel thinner, or even lighter fluid near bandai plastic is a pretty big nono.
this doesn't apply if there's a layer of paint in between, right? or how else would you do washes?

>>

kinda want to start collecting gundams for real now, like maybe 5 for the first purchase.

im older, like 33. so should i just get the action figures and build a diorama around it?

can i customize the action figures and add bullet holes and shit?

i really dont want to get model kits
>>
>>6200483
Model kits that you put the time and effort into will always look better than figures. At least of mecha. If you're going to go to the trouble of adding battle damage and what not to figures you might as well build the model that way you can go even further with your customization.

If you're set on figures there is always Robot Damashii. I don't like the proportions on most of them honestly. I have a Wing Gundam TV ver and it's alright, nothing to write home about, definitely not as good as my gunpla. Just get models, you'll have fun building them.
>>

Wrong place to ask buddy. This isn't an action figure thread
>>
>>6200483
Dunno why your age is relevant, but ok.

I find model kits much more rewarding and fun, and like the guy above said, if you're battle damaging them anyway you might as well. Plus, model kits are significantly cheaper than the action figures and there is a WAY bigger selection of kits.

At least give one good kit a try to see if you like it. Make it a modern HGUC, which shouldn't run you more than like $10-20 on Amazon. You might just fall in love.

As long as you're not touching the areas that you're going to paint next, you're fine.

There's a reason why so many people use bottle caps of all sorts to hold their minis by... and that's mostly because they dont want to get paint on their hands or touch the wet areas.

you really shouldn't worry about transfering oils from your hands to the piece you're painting, unless you're really greasy
>>
>>6201369
Oil from your hands can be an issue rubbing paint off. I mostly only have this problem with really small things like rivets or sharp edges on metal minis that don't hold paint well though.

What does gunpla anons who've been enjoying IBO designs think of this?

I honestly think season 2 of IBO has been lukewarm on designs, I've only liked Barbatos Lupus and Kimaris Vidar so far. I thought Vidar itself was very... plain. This is a welcome return to bulky knight armors for me.
>>
>>6201417
Kimaris always looks good. IBO has been pretty bad with gundam designs though.
>>
>>6201417
It's cool, loved the new lance and everything from the waist above. The legs are fine to me, the drill bits are neat, and the color is unique at least but could've tone down the yellow.
Shame about the feet not being flat on the ground like every other Kimaris though.
>>
>>6201417
it's like hekija imo, the design is fantastic but would've really look great if it use two-tone color scheme (like lilac-lavender)
unlike hekija, at least the color is alright, but as long as you can paint, no real issue
>>
>>6201394
You have to be pretty damn greasy to get to the point where your hands will leave an unpaintable puddle.

As for rivets and other edges, are you using a surfactant with your paints? Surface tension is likely what keeps the paint from staying on.

Gusion was great. The problem is it becomes the Rebake and loses all uniqueness. All the main gundams become boring once tekkadan ruins them.

The feet finally dried on the Gm. Modded an extra leg on the shield, made a sniper mount, and added new boosters.

Yeah, I agree, my favs from IBO has been Gusion, Kimaris, Kimaris Trooper. I think this form shape wise is cool, but the one thing bothering me is how the black is pretty much only on his lower body, that's pretty weird. Wouldn't have minded the black if it was more of an accent versus split exactly down half of the body.

>>6201446
Hekija... the feet doesn't match the upper body for me... I'm also weirded out by the shoulders.

I think the only kits I'm getting from IBO season 2 is Kimaris-Vidar and Vual. Though the Vual is from the side-story and will probably never appear in the main series seeing as where things are now.
>>
>>6201417
Season 2 has being more miss than hit compared to the first with suit designs. There have being some great grunt designs like the Shiden and Geirail but Gundam Frame designs have being somewhat disappointing.

Lupas was pretty boring, Rex isn't that good but I do like the tail and just how more 'demon' like it looks. Vidar is somewhat alright but that blue/black paint job ruins it. Flauros has grown on me but I do like that concept of it transforming for the railguns. I think two of the more interesting Gundam frames came from outside of the show, Astaroth and Dantalion.
>>
>>6201522
It's a shame Dantalion is game exclusive and no kits in sight.
>>
>>6201487
Sweet. Haven't built a kit in a couple of years, so this'll be a nice challenge.
>>
>>6201417
It's the best Kimaris so far. I don't like the shoulder armor and the feet, but aside that it looks fine. The drills are stupid (and fun). But it's NOT Vidar. There is NOTHING Vidar about it. Nothing carried over. Not the armor, nor the colors or weapons. A massive downgrade when you consider this.

For reference the IBO designs I really like:
1st form Barbatos, Grimgerde, Hyakuri, Graze Ritter, Vidar, Julia, Reginlaze.
I enjoyed building Graze Ritter the most, followed by Barbatos. Designwise Grimgerde is my favorite.
>>
>>6201531
It's a good choice, I quite like how ridiculous it looks.
>>
>>6201001
I had just washed my hands and the clear had already been applied so it'll be pretty okay. After some 10 MG and to PG kits I've never run into an issue.
>>6201326
Alclad II Airframe Aluminum to be specific.
>>6201369
Esentially this, the parts are done painting and the clear is already touch dry.
>>
>>6201483
Lots of little cones to try and sand perfectly.
>>
>>6201366
Well first of all I don't sweat much.
Second of all I used latex gloves, which I normally use for cleaning. Got a box of them for the cheap.
>>

>>
>>6201600
>>6201602
Yeaaah, they'll look nice and painted right untill you start to plug something into them, then they will instantly chip and flake. If your really nuts you may try something like...I dunno latex paint? I honestly don't know here, I'm just shooting shit at a wall here.
>>
>>6201602

I seam welded for the first time on my Gyancelot. I learned that it's a bad idea to weld the legs and arms, but am still not sure how to do the intricate painting/priming without ending up with obvious cracks or tons of masking.
>>
>>6201619
Gunpla is a continual learning experience. Dunno what you mean about cracks tho.

>>6201618
That would the joints either stiff as hell, or so thick that you're unable to plug them together.
>>
>>6201619
Two words the pro's use
>Non
>Articulated
>>
>>6201626

The seam lines. I just assume that the paint would chip and peal showing the seams on the parts. Especially on poorly fitting pieces.
>>
>>6201619
>>6201626
Ohhh, You know what I had a similar issue with a super old bottle of glue. Thing worked fine for about 3 years then suddenly it started cracking apart a model I was working on. I threw it away immediatly and bought a new bottle, no more issues. The plastic should not be cracking like that, and its probably your glue.

>>6201626
I've airbrushed latex and urethane stuff before without much issue.I never used them on polycaps, and seems more work than its worth honestly, but if someone was super anal about it, I'd suggest they start there.

If pedicure stuff is permitted, I recommend having one around. Use the side cutter as a stand-in nipper. The curved cutter actually works great if the gate is on a curved surface. You can finish the nubs off with the nail file then the nail buffer.

The are usually made of stainless steel too so rusting is not an issue.

Goddammit. Last year I bought an older MG off Amazon, and I'm just now getting around to building it. Now I find a post is snapped off in a crucial area and the broken-off piece isn't in the box or bag. It's way too late to try to return it or complain...and the bags were all sealed so it must have happened at the factory or something. Fuck.

Not necessarily, especially since there's the smaller peg/tab you talked about to take some weight off of the piece you'll glue on there. In fact, it will most likely be better than not gluing it.

Gluing a bit of runner would probably be too weak to support the backpack on its own, but since one of the two tabs is still intact, it should do its job of supporting enough weight to prevent the other tab from breaking. Even then, using a pin vise and a cut-down thin nail would make it a hell of a lot sturdier.

>>
>>6203731
I feel like the major benefit to the PG over the MG is how easy it is to implement LEDs, so if you're planning on keeping it in Unicorn Mode, it might be more economical to just stick with the MG. That being said, it'll look damn nice in either mode and it's your model, so do whatever makes you happy.

Has anyone tried using Golden high-flow acrylics for plamo? I have some mulling around from a previous non-plamo project and they flow very nicely through the airbrush with strong pigments, but I've never heard of anyone using them for models. Is there a reason for that?
>>
>>6202056
It's technically 1/144 rather than HG, but they've done clear versions of the 00 RGs as show exclusives, and those things are pretty crazy as far as posability goes. Pretty sure they also did a clear version of the original Barbatos, which has a pretty wide range of motion due to its spindly design.

That and the inner frame for the ape arms is much more robust compared to the 1/144.
Plus better parts separation, EXCEPT you still need to paint the hand claws.
That's about it really.
Oh by the way, regarding articulations, Rex' feet can't adjust to splitting pose, like pretty much all 1/100 IBO Gundams.

Tamiya TS-80 and Mr. Super Clear are the best matte topcoats and there is a very visible difference between them and cheaper competitors. Hey guys! I'm currently assembling the 1/144 Shining Gundam (HG). I kind of picked it out, bought it, and then read the thread sticky, and it's finally here so I rushed an arts store to buy some acrylics to try to line the panels with.

I've just assembled the core lander, and it uses a ball joint attached to a vernier(sp?). Now it slides off reasonably easy. In what cases would you guys use adhesive/super glue on something like this?

I watch my little brother's kids, and by some freak accident it's possible one may snag this dude off a shelf or something, so while I don't expect it to be indestructible, I'd like to keep the smaller bits from being lost.

I took the vernier out of the tree and dropped it immediately. My heart sank as I heart the little plastic dropping noise.

Also when do you prefer to panel line? As pieces are done, or when fully assembled?

Literally just let your mind flow free. My workflow is that I order a Gunpla I want and when I get it and have it assembled, I pull out my big notepad and start sketching various color schemes in multiple colours. Once I've found something I like, I try to mix the paint to get as close to it as possible and then go to town.

But if you're just starting out get the basic colors first. Black, Gray, White, Blue, Red, Green etc.
>>
>>6207177
Nothing? I'm just nervously assembling my first and was hoping to chit chat about it while I crank away hoping to not screw up.
>>
>>6207177
Generally, a light touch of cement will help bond the plastic to other plasticy bits, so a small drop of that will help the vernier not fall off.

Generally, I tend to panel line after I've build the whole model, just makes it easier to keep track on which bits you've already done.

Happy building dude!

>First off, how do i sand paper my gunpla? I got myself one of those plastic cutter, and sandpaper of 400 grid and 1000 grid and i had alot of trouble removing the nubs, should i get myself one of those cutting knifes? Tell me how you guys do it.

You don't need to sand at all unless you're painting. Get an Olfa knife.
>>
>>6207222
Thanks, I did that and it seems super sturdy now. I appreciate the reply too, friend! You guys seemed so chill and nice I tried hard to wait until I actually had my model and a valid question to post to avoid shitposting.

So far I've got the shoulders, an arm to hand, both heads, torso and corelander assembled! Popping them together to see the pieces like that is so exciting man.
>>
>>6207232
>can't remove nubs
>want to paint
Slow down dude. Buy cement, putty and spray can primer and start welding stuff and fixing gaps/sinks/seams. Then you're ready to start painting.
>>
>>6207280
Welding is unecessary.
>>
>>6207285
You're unnecessary
>>
>>6207237
>>6207280
Aight thanks for the tips you guys, but why would i want to weld stuff together when i havent broke anything? Are you talking about the gaps between separate plastic pieces? I'm sorry if im sounding stupid but i have visited some guide websites but this is the first time i heard that
>>
>>6207232

Hey. Check out this dude on YouTube. He's the only one out there right now, producing regular content that is actually useful to people just starting out in the hobby.

English subs are iffy, but just watch closely and learn.
>>
>>6207293

It would help if I included the fucking LINK.
>>
>>6207289

Welding the seams just makes it look a little nicer, is all. It's not something you actually NEED to do.

In fact, I would suggest you forget about it until you've got the other basics down, like nub removal.

Found a mag lamp at a thrift store for a steal, got home and the base just fucking disintegrated. So I had to pull off the spring clamp and duct tape it to my boom mic stand.

Just curious if I should buy another boom stand, or if there is a more elegant solution. It's a gooseneck type, about 3 feet of metal bendy part with the wire coming out the bottom and the Switch part way down the bottom.

Sorry if none of this makes sense. Just rambling to figure shit out I guess.
>>
>>6207289
sounds like you haven't read the guide on the OP
>>
>>6207312

give a picture of your lamp and current stand.

also be extra careful painting with those magnifiers to not drop any on the lens.
>>
>>6207312
sort of hard to know without seeing the lamp and the problem

>>
>>6207810
It might look okay with some TLC. And besides, what else is he gonna do? It's not like Bandai is champing at the bit to make a new Altron in those colors with non-Katoki proportions.
>>
>>6207191
Thats an old wives tale.

Contact lead poisoning requires prolonged direct exposure to items containing lead over an extended period of time. Simply touching something that contains lead isnt going to automatically poison you, unless youre too dumb to wash your hands afterwards
>>
>>6207503
>>6207422
Kinda hard to get it all into one photo. But basically I got a mic stand attached to my desk. The stand is adjustable. If I remove the part where the mic can attach I can put in the end of the bendy tube of the lamp. Right now it's just duct taped to the arm, but all the weight makes the stand sag unless I super tighten one of the joints.

There's likely lead in it but a near negligible amount. Lead is actually more expensive than plastic so if it's in there it's from residue from machines. You're not exactly getting a chunk of lead here, it's probably more dangerous to work once with tin/lead solder than it is to play with a toy with lead in it once in a while. Just wash your hands or topcoat it if you feel paranoid.

Friend just sent me two packs of Gundam Markers, a Revive Gyan, weathering ink/paints(?) and a pair of God Hands out of nowhere. Is this a sign I need to build my kits better or just a friendly present do you suppose?

Panel lining pen?
>>
>>6208033
Yes

Speaking of. Bought the set of metallics expecting the red to be actually red. Instead it's more or a pink
>>
>>6204438

Got PG Strike, Lightning Saix, 1/72 X-wing and a couple car models I was hoping to build with my brother. Oh, and an MG Gun Tank I don't want to build because I bought it to impress a terrible woman.
>>
>>6208033
No. The panel lining ones are finer pointed. I have one of those markers in grey and I don't really use it for anything.

She was a japanese co-worker that I had a pretty serious thing for. I had talked to her a few times about models and gundam shows and she mentioned she liked the guntank, so I decided to get one and show her how it turned out. She had turned extremely cold a couple weeks before transferring to another location recently and immediately after, told my friend that I had forced her to leave our company. I don't know what the problem was.

The stickers are finally done, cutting the straight ones was a nightmare and surprisingly the spike stickers were the easiest to apply
The kit looks so good that I can't be mad at it though
I've got 2 other origin kits that I am not looking forward to apply stickers on
>>
>>6208463

silly gaijin, you don't go after a jap woman's ass, you act like a king pheasant and shake your booties to attract japs into you.

or maybe you should had gave her the guntank to build.

Jokes aside, you could kitbash that MG Guntank with a Gundam

>>
>>6207177

If you bought regular craft store acrylic paints, return them and buy some kind of actual model paints, it will make your life way easier. If you're in the US Vallejo model paint is acrylic and pretty easy to find, as is citadel (the game's workshop brand)
>>
>>6208463
You idiot. Women have just enough proximal knowledge to get guys interested in them, at which point they expect flowers, food, and flattery for being ultra casuals in something guys are into.

When she mentioned she liked x stuff and talked to you about it, what she really wanted was for you to take her out to eat for free and then swoon over her with gifts and junk while praising her.

She turned cold because she realized you're an idiot and loser that wasn't going to spend money on her, and in fact you actually spent money on yourself buying a guntank rather than one for her.
>>
>>6208540
Giving someone an unassembled model doesn't soudn very romantic.
>>
>>6208540
Not wanting to spend money on random bitch doesn't make him an idiot though. At least he's got a Guntank out of the deal.
>>

Well, titanium Nanju was a bust. Could not find any paints to match the metallic red to cover nubs marks. Time to paint strip the whole thing with thinner and do a custom paint job.

I'm willing to bet this is exactly what the problem was, relationships don't work that way, and you have only yourself to blame if you think its about giving someone shit until they like you or doing the one crazy thing to impress them so they'll suddenly be head over heels for you

I'm not disagreeing, but this did take place over a couple of years and she doesn't really know how much that stuff cost, and I didn't talk about models and anime myself, as much as indulge her talking about it occasionally. Her attitude actually changed on a day that she tried to talk to me when I was in a shitty mood and didn't feel like talking. She asked a co-worker if I was okay when I wasn't around, then just turned off. Before lunch, she was forcing conversation, after lunch and for a couple weeks after, she avoided and blew me off.

Also, should I gloss coat or flat coat? I feel like a G gundam model makes more sense to gloss.

As >>6203984 said, the plastic kits are more or less lighter "flimsier" copies of the resin kits, plastic or not, the model has very little room for articulation and posing. Having the resin version also solves the issue of the thing falling over from getting knocked over from a bumped shelf or something.

Whichever way you choose, it looks nice, just be prepared to pay out a lot since the prices start relatively high.
