For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***
So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.
This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.
Submit to .
Due Date: March 1st, 2017.

Not sure if this goes here.
How are the Super Miniplas? The new GaoGaiGar looks cool.

>P-Bandai model kits in U.S.
I eagerly await the day.
Nice to hear from you again, Derringer.
>>6186988
Just built the Super Minipla Ideon. Plastic quality is a bit shit, but eh, they're essentially candy toys. It developed stress marks somewhat easily, so be careful when assembling. Be gentle. And for god's sake, mind the instructions carefully, I don't know if this plastic would survive being pried apart if you misassemble or forget a part.
That said, the finished thing feels decent and looks great thanks to a lot of surface detailing to panel line. I don't quite know if it was worth the price, but I had a pretty good time. That Gaogaigar is probably your best option if you want a small scale one that can partsform.
>>6187020
>stickers can't stick to the oily plastic
They might have improved slightly on that front--the stickers on Ideon went on easily and seem to be stuck fast. The plastic also accepted paint and topcoat pretty decently.
First time ever airbrushing, and doing preshading.
How'd I do?
does anyone have the MG turn X? I kinda want to get it
the ss4 kits any good?
>>6187132
Well, they look absolutely horrid in my opinion, but I suppose if you don't have a problem with the look of these kits they might be an okay choice. I mean, the SHF proto unquestionably looks better but Bandai is kinda dragging its feet so this might be your only choice for a while.
>>6187139
you're not kidding, those looks like some bootleg shit
>>6187132
Yes
Why are chisels so damn expensive
>>6187254
because its a very fine 'durable' point made out of valuable material
>>6187255
Buy me a set of Madworks please ;_;
>>6187259
i bought a set of ZXL chisels for about $60 off taobao last year, its a little bit of fucking around with shipping forwarders and stuff but they're pretty good
not that i've had any time to actually use them, switching jobs and finishing degrees doesn't leave much time for plamo
>>6187261
Ah, fantastic. I didn't know someone actually owned them here. Could I get some review pics?
>>6187264
I don't have any panel lining shots, but I'm going to the hobby store tomorrow to get pla-plate so I might post some WIP shots then, this is the 0.3mm one
>>6187265
and the set
>>6187052
Pretty good actually. Good job shading, the only shade line that doesn't make since to me at least is on the upper calf, the line there is not on the panel line or on a super high point or crevice, so it just looks like a line is there for no reason. But with that said, the lines are blended out well and the color is good.
>>6187142
To be fair, the ones in that picture are straight builds. Even a matte topcoat would go a long way towards making them look better. Wouldn't fix the wonkiness of the sculpt, sure, but it'd at least eliminate the plastic sheen.
Got the shield painted up last night as well as the sabers and a couple of other small parts. Think theres only one or two parts left to paint then I can get into the red of the shield and decals.

>>6187666

That aside these are roughly the same price as Madworks, so still pretty hefty for a nice set.
>>6187673
at least you will know what they are made of
>>6187293
Nah nah nah. The shininess ain't even shit here. The sculpt is about 99% of why those figures look bad. Yeah, you can topcoat em, but you can't polish a turd. It'll just be...a topcoated turd.

>Build is in the OP
I wasn't expecting that, but thanks Gelgoog Guy.
Getting into weapon scratch building. Right now I'm just trying to get the shape pattern and proportions right.
I used junk 0.4 mm thickness as a starting point but it looks like I have to go wider. Having trouble cutting through the sheet with my hobby knife though, and that's for the 1.0 mm.
Do I have to find something else to cut, or am I suppose to "dot" certain areas until it can snap off?
>>6188152
Scribe lines over and over until it weakens, then break it off. For .5mm and under, I just use scissors.
Damn, it's impossible to find chisels in the US. Is taobao really the best solution?
Zeon technology knows no bounds
>>6188303
Anyone got tips for painting the coils on the Zaku 2.0 MG? Or small parts in general?
>>6187272
The edges hold up pretty good and the blades are of decent quality.
I'm pretty sure my listing just said the sizes it would come with and I received all of them.
So, Wonder Festival's currently happening. Is it just non-gunpla stuff, or can we expect any new resin Gundam designs?
So I got my Spiegel Gundam in today, and I want to start on it after I top coat my Barbados. I was thinking it'd be wise to seal the seams first. Anyone know if hobby lobby carries anything that'd be good for sealing and top coating?
Anyone else try the Universal Unit candy toy/kits? I thought they'd be just little assembled toys, but you actually have to build them. They're pretty good for their size, flexible too.
>>6188659
UNs have really nice articulation for their size.
Do you guys have those pictures of the japanese modded GM Sniper 2 MGs? I wanna mod my feet but I want some refrence pics.
>>6188659
I really want that MK-II Psyco Gundam but that price tag can go fuck itself. Doubt it'll happen, but I guess I'll have to wait on a future HGUC release for this particular MA.
I just wanted to show off my build because I'm happy with it.
>>6188784
This is the second kit I've done.
Sharing results as promised:
Brush-on flat topcoat. 30-60sec of UV exposure to cure.
Pros:
Instant
_Very_ scratch resistant (can't scratch it with a nail).
Cons
Kinda thick (because brush application)
Slightly rubbery
Needs UV light to cure
Conclusion
Suitable for dioramas and small areas where scratching is an issue.

>>6189278
That kit put me off gunpla for two years. Needless to say. I don't like
>>6189289
ARticulation wise, it's an Astray, so it's pretty good. Astray is an ugly base kit though, and this is just another clusterfuck variant. It wasn't discontinued, it's just out of print currently, but it's still pretty easy to find if you're in the US.
>>6189270
>Why'd you buy it from Aliexpress?
I bought a bunch of electroplating powders (haven't tried them yet) and this topcoat along with it.
>I'd expect a UV cure topcoat to be some sort of epoxy resin.
All kinds of materials can be cured with UV. Many UV glues are rubbery when cured.
The topcoat is supposed to go on a nail which can flex to some degree so I would expect it to be at least that flexible.
>>6188979
My back just gave out. I should really get a better chair and table for this shit.
Bandai is planning on making Pacific Rim 2 model kits. Could be good.
>>6189263
Thank you! I'm terrible at the tiny details like that.
Painting question:
I got pic related to paint my Graze Schwalbe. Is using a lacquer top coat/dullcote going to mess up my enamel paint? It's my first time painting, and I'd like to not mess it up, but I'm not going to cry if my first attempt is horrible.
Also, I want to make sure I'm doing things in the right order.
Sand (what grit?), prime, paint, correct? Any steps I'm missing?
>>6189634
you are going to need your paint dry for like 5 days before you topcoat, not even kidding
put the pieces in a box after you spray so they don't get dusty
don't even try to assemble it for at least a day, maybe 2, because enamel will leave fingerprints like crazy
>>6189644
Noted. Thanks. I'm taking everything apart now. There's a few colored parts that I don't intend to paint on the skeleton, so I'd be safe to just take them off, reassemble my skeleton in a few places, and then prime and paint, right?
It's mainly the yellow and white parts of the Graze here.
>>6189662
yeah you can do that, make sure you don't spray the frame too thick or it will peel paint when it moves.
Warm your cans up in warm (not hot) water to raise the internal pressure and make the paint less viscous.
You're going to want to paint the light brown parts first because they will need the longest possible drying time before you mask them for the stripe
Be careful not to spray too much red for the stripe or you'll get leaks or it will look like a piece of tape or something. Do a light coat and let it sit for 10 min then do another. You don't want it to totally dry or the tape may stick to the paint, but this is way less likely with enamels thankfully.
>>6189634
>40 bucks plus sales tax on paint
Decide quickly that you're going to buy an airbrush
>>6189671
So should I do the parts with the stripe first in red and then tape off the part I want the red to remain on, or should I do tan and then tape off everything except the stripe area?
Thanks again for the advice.
>>6189678
I actually got it all for 40% off. So it was closer to $25. This is my first rodeo painting and I wanted to try it before I invested in an airbrush. I'd rather find out now that I hate it than go on to figure it out after I spent $100 on an airbrush and then more on paint.
If I like it, I'll probably get an airbrush at some point.
>>6189683
tan first, because you pretty much always want to do lightest to darkest (or lightest to most "vibrant") but there's another reason also. You may not yet realize how transparent paint is, but if you do it the way you mentioned, all of your tan parts with the red stripe would be a different tan than the other pieces because they will have red underneath.
>>6189688
also I should mention the "lightest to darkest" thing applies to when you want to put a solid color on top of another like you do, not like a 100% rule because there are many times you'll do shading etc by putting darker colors first.
>>6189688
>all of your tan would be a different color
That's what I had assumed. Thanks for clarifying. I'm going to sand everything down tomorrow and go over it again for any nub marks I may have missed.
Do I need to remove any panel lining I did originally, or is the primer going to cover it without issue?
Sorry for all the questions, but Google doesn't always give concise or consistent answers.
>>6189678
>implying airbrushing is free
If you are painting occasionally, spraycans are the way to go, no contest.
Spending _hundreds_ on equipment and paint only to have it sit and collect dust is retarded.
>>6189564
if they're master grade quality I'd get one
>>6189710
sure but it's also retarded to spend more per kit for 5-10 kits and THEN buy all the airbrushing stuff, which is all I meant to suggest
decide early if you'll be spending the money for airbrushing or not
>>6189710
How well do rattle cans look in comparison to airbrushed kits though? I kind of want to make my Graze Schwalbe match with my Stylet, but I'm not sure the end result is going to be worth the effort.
>>6189723
That's the other thing that doesn't make it a direct comparison, airbrushes give you a ton more options that you can't do with cans. Even just being able to control your paint flow without wasting it is a major advantage.
Man. This little kit is so much fun. The articulation is pretty fucking good too. Once I got his hips on I started to pose him for an hour or so just because it was fun. Also there seem to be enough parts in here to almost make another head. I'll have to look into that once I finish building the Accesories.
>>6189723
>How well do rattle cans look in comparison to airbrushed kits
>If you are painting occasionally
If you are painting a kit once every several months like our dear leader GG here, it's NOT going to matter. Ergo, no point pissing money down the drain.
You do not magically get gud by acquiring the equipment, you get gud by constant practice. Like with any art or craft. Which by the way means that your first attempt at painting is going to look like shit (relatively speaking) no matter what you do and it might demotivate you hard enough that you will abandon the whole enterprise. If you do, let it cost you $40 and not $200.
>>6189745
Sure, but I still want to know the answer. If someone that knows what they're doing still gets kind of shitty results from cans I'll probably just not bother at all. It's one thing to take a few cracks at a model to get it looking pretty decent and another to struggle for barely mediocre results.
>>6189753
Rattle cans are really hard to control, especially for newbies when you can't tell if your coat is good or not.
They'll look pretty good in the end, but for newbies you should practice on some spoons and compare the finish.
>>6189753
>Sure, but I still want to know the answer.
Okay, here goes:
If someone who painted with an airbrush every day for a year paints a kit, it will look amazing.
If someone who painted with spraycans every day for a year paints a kit, it will look just as amazing (but they will probably spend more time and money achieving the same result).
If you are into fancy shading and gradients and artsy shit, airbrush will get you there faster and it will be cheaper in the long run.
However, if you are into "standard" gunpla paintjobs like pic related, you will get results faster with cans because even coverage will be easier to achieve.
Either way, you are looking at months of practice before you start seeing something consistently good.
>>6189787
One other thing: with airbrush you can mix your own colors, with cans you are limited to what's available in the cans.
>>6189787
Not gonna lie, ive been fucking with cans for the longest time and I just barely got decent with it.
I tried an airbrush for the first time yesterday and my kit turned out pretty nice. It's all about the control that the airbrush gives which is amazing man. Everything just feels so much easier. However I have not messed with gloss paints/coats on an airbrush so theres that too
Does anyone know if the 1/100 Gundam Vidar can accept Master Grade hands without modding?
>>6189740

>>6190291
Don't care, the new designs are terrible. Far more interested in getting more PR1 kits. Give us a fucking Crimson already, I feel like it always gets neglected. No Neca 2.0, no 1/4 scale, probably no model kit either with my luck.
>>6190291
Call me again when they have designs out
>>6190291
I can't get excited at this point. The new designs have had all the uniqueness and personality sucked out of them.
Check out my custom acguy. If you swap the cap in the ar out for a larger one you can do this. Might need to trim the cap depending on which you use i guess.
It's not really a custom. I did remove the clear piece from the head though since it looks so much better without it.
>>6189710
>Hundreds
It set me back £69.99 for my first airbrush and compressor, Vallejo model air paints are good quality and about £2 per bottle. If we convert that into USD for say 5 paints that's just shy of $100 to get a foothold in a better medium, I imagine in the US this would be cheaper.
The decision is simple, are you planning on painting enough kits to warrant buying $100 of good quality spray paint? If the answer is yes, just go buy an airbrush instead. Sure the cheap brush won't give you amazing results if you want to do shading but it'll easily match a spray can, let you use cheaper paints and can be upgraded in future if you want more detail in your work.
>>6190479
Now this is a custom.

I know the manual says to put the stand pieces inside and pull down, but I saw from Hobbylink TV they used a gundam marker instead of the stand piece and got a better looking scrunch effect.
Are there any alternate ways to get the best looking scrunch effect, or should I just go with using the marker?

>>6192212
That's pretty cool. I'm out towards Jackson, which is nice, but there's not a lot of hobby places here. Plenty of places to go work and go shooting, but that's about it
Here's my plan for the Graze. Anyone got suggestions before I start on it? I've got all my paints picked out, I just need to prime now.
Also, is suspending the parts in the air by using the alligator clips sticks a requirement, or would I be able to get away with just spreading everything out and priming, then flipping it over once it dried and painting the backside.
>>6192157
Step 1 - glue the clip to the stick
>>6192164
any stick will do, just don't be afraid to crumple the shit out of them. And watch out for the shoulder assembly; I'm retarded and didn't read the 1000000 PSAs about it and ended up having to pin and glue the peg back together after I twisted the tip off.

Yes. I like certain paints to be matte or gloss depending on the color. Both for aesthetics and for airbrushing. I have a bitch of a time with certain colors from tamiya being matte or gloss so I pick and choose.
Finally got some of my grails, just had to go to wonfes to get them. A shame Artorias and Gargoyle were sold out when I got there, but at least now I can act smug about my less mainstream taste.

What's the best way to strip top coat without damaging paint?
>>6196712
cant be done, there is no way to just strip topcoat and leave paint perfect, unless you maybe painted with lacquers only and used an acrylic top coat but thats the complete opposite of how people paint.
>>6196723
I'm trying to strip lacquer topcoat from a figma that I tried to repaint so this is a slightly exceptional scenario. Figma uses PVC paint I believe. Is that a little easier to work with or no?
>>6196734
Why are you stripping the topcoat?
I would soak in paint stripper of choice for a very short period of time, then try to wipe off the topcoat if possible.
I don't think it'll end well though. If the figma isn't too complicated try sanding
>>6196767
Because I fucked it up while spraying it. Sprayed too close, layer came out too thick.
I'm currently trying rubbing alcohol and while it works pretty well on the flat surfaces it's starting to strip the paint a bit and it can't reach the smaller nooks and crannies. Anything I can use to get to those?
>>6196776
Cotton bud/qtips, cloth on tweezers and patience.

>>6197107
depends on how well that model kit turns out but I suspect with how model kits for human/organic type characters, a little airbrushing always helps to give it that "soft" feel versus a metal feel.

Storm Sworder actually makes appearances in every anime. It has the biggest role in the first one, Chaotic Century. Two fairly important characters fly them.
In New Century they are used in at least one of the Blackdraft fights by I seem to recall a recurring opponent.
In fuzors, mostly just a bunch of small appearances. And Gensis the only time they show a sworder was in the intro iirc.
So they are a fairly iconic flyer in the series. Sworder is the go to for air supremacy thanks to it's melee capabilities which most other flyers seem to lack. Pteras are primarily anti ground bombers, and the Raynos is a solid all rounder with a heavy focus on speed. Those were always the three main zoids I thought of immediately when it came to flyers.

>>6197455
Nope. Just hand brushed. I use grey acrylic and a small brush.
>>6198154
What brands did you use for everything in general on the build?
>>6196199
>>6196199
plastic is soft, i only really had two terrible fitting issues (the pieces on the back of the shoulder armor on one side and the chest vents that was too loose on mine, for the left chest.
The way the 'backpack' connects will benefit from gluing or adding a thin piece of plate/plastic to keep it from sliding off the back and the peg on mine is a bit small, so the connection to the blue part is loose.
Also, two ways to go with the rear knee thruster things: either slather some cement on the white part that connects to the sides of the leg, or widen the 'holes' on the blue parts so the white bit can slide in completely.
There is some extra weight added, but it's fairly balanced, so there isnt any major balancing issues.
>>6198204
Mr hobby paints, shitty grey acrylic paint from walmart, bandai decals. Bout it. Oh and MiG washes for the rust/streaking.
>>6198392
Good to know generic art acrylics aren't totally useless in the hobby so long as they're used for small things and not the whole part. Thanks for the info. Have a cool video that might interest you for weathering.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9Mx1tj1LjQ&t=1s
>>6192230
Clipping makes shit infinitely easier since you can turn the piece while painting it and won't have to wait for the paint to dry like you would with your method.
>>6197347
Well it's harder to get fine control, obviously. You might have some trouble with fancy shading and stuff but for the most part you'll be fine. Also since it lets out more paint, you coats may turn out slightly thicker at full blast, and it'll also accept under thinned paint easier with the larger nozzle size.
That aside it's all small nitpicks, it's just that people like to start with a 0.3
>>6197300

What a waste, the Vidar only used it in one episode and did not demonstrate its effectiveness in a duel or attrition warfare. But it did show the power of the blade feet.
I am really crossed that no Vidar elements got retained in the new Kimaris. Maybe Vidar will come back later?
Vidar looked so mysterious, independent and versatile. The new Kimaris is just another jouster.

You must have worked some wizardry then, cause that's some of the best chipping I've seen. Look at that one chip on the right bicep, on the yellow caution part...it actually appears that the yellow paint is flaking and cracking above the chip. Really incredible that you managed this by handbrushing.
>>6198771
Boring, not different enough. If you squint it just looks like a repainted Kimaris Trooper. I hate the feet so much. The only things I dig here are the beefy arms, the shoulder pads, and the mohawk.
>>6198790
Yes you were wrong. Tamiya Lacquers are some of the strongest paints you can buy off the shelf. I mean, they will still scratch and get paint rub if you pose your kits a lot, but they hold up better than most.
>>6199089
>Tamiya Lacquers are some of the strongest paints you can buy off the shelf.
But are they the strongest on the shelf?
Do you guys use acrylics or enamels for detail painting on frames and internal stuff?
>>6199109
Yeah but they are too strong, only good for the "brain damage"-kind of high.
>>6199133
if you are huffing _any_ paint without a respirator, your brain is already damaged enough, paint won't make much of difference
>>6199137
>if you are huffing _any_ paint without a respirator, your brain is already damaged enough, paint won't make much of difference
If people follow plastic model news from Japan closely, people would be surprised at how young some of the more famous model professional die. Dead before 60, and this is Japan people easy lives to 80 we are talking about.
It seems the supply the older generation used was a lot deadlier than the current day stuff or they just ignored safety rule.
And in one fell swoop my opinion of the Providence changed from "pick it up when it's available" to "PREORDER THAT SHIT NOW"
Hope whoever thought the PVC body parts were a good idea has been fired.
>>6199209
That is legit badass.
I really wish bandai released the clean box art pictures. The last few have been amazing.
>>6199228
Yeah, seriously. The GM Sniper II boxart made me go from "meh" to "I WANT THIS IMMEDIATELY" just like the anon above with Providence.
Also, I know very little about Seed except I hate most of its designs, but god damn, there is just something captivating about Providence in particular. That backpack...those hoses running into the chest...the thicc legs...definitely gonna buy it.
>>6199209
This, Strike and Duel.

They frequently fount use respirators and sometimes not even spray booths or ventilation. But American modelers were the same way. Safety has a much bigger presence now, thankfully.
>>6199363
This has me a little scared for my health. My dumb ass has been spraying parts on my porch for a while now and just trying my best to hold my breath, but I still get a whiff of paint fumes now and then. I better just buy a respirator already.
>>6199366
Its okay, I have a respirator and I fail to use it more often than I should.(especially when working with putty or mixing paint)

Grimgerde Repair, nice. I'm looking forward to the finished kit plenty. What was your over all inspiration, since this is more than just weathering?
>>6199363
>They frequently fount use respirators and sometimes not even spray booths or ventilation. But American modelers were the same way. Safety has a much bigger presence now, thankfully.
Should I be worried?
I use spray can, and I try to step away from the spot once a cycle of stroke is completed but I don't use any spray booth or respirator. And I often do the spray in a second level basement parking garage
Is there an efficient way to retroactively topcoat a gunpla after assembly?
I have some old MG's from years ago that I want to topcoat but I'd rather not pull them all apart
>>6199440
No need to disassemble; just clean out the dust and dirt and spray.
>>6199440
1. First off, you wanna clean em well so you don't trap hair and dust under the topcoat. Give them a rinse and a light scrub with a toothbrush to get off the dust and grime, then dry well with a paper towel. If they have water-soluble inks on them or peeling stickers, use a combo of canned air and a makeup brush to clean them instead.
2. Don't disassemble them, but at least pull them apart into logical bits. Like if you see that the skirts might block topcoat from reaching the thighs, or it would be hard to hit the armpits by leaving the arms on, pull them off and spray them separately.
3. Remove any and all clear plastic pieces! Matte topcoat will frost them. You may have to disassemble a bit to get those out.
4. Spray, then reassemble!
>>6199380

>>6198602
but I thought the point of a dual action brush as to have control over paint and air flow? obviously the size of the nozzle adjusts the baselines, but it's not like precision is impossible with a little practice, right?

Yeah here's one I took from the con.
>>6199536
