For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

how is the Transient Gundam Glacier kit? Do the plastics match the photos or are the colors really off. I've had too many 144 scales have really off colors and I'm not big on painting.

how thin is the paint? how wide is the brush? how patient are you? are you autistic?

so many factors to determine to answer your question accurately.
>>
Just bought a RG Sinanju.
Usually I don't worry too much about nub marks since I'm a pretty casual builder(I don't even paint or apply all the stickers), I have a nice pair of snips that get them close enough then if there's too much left xacto the rest off.
Should I try out a method for the RG Sinanju since it cost more? The way I've always seen it is I'm just paying $15-20 for a super articulated figure I gotta build that despite any nub marks is still gonna look nicer than 85% of the shit I can buy in stores.
So should I even worry about it or build away? I feel conflicted because of the price tag, I just wanted it cause he looks neat as fuck.
>>
>>6142729
paint can be thinned and i have several brushes, why would you even mention that, its so obvious....

I find that clipping closer to the part actually makes any stress/nub marks bigger and that's speaking as someone with godhand nippers.

I'd suggest doing whatever you're comfortable with because I know for certain the way I remove nubs isn't the same as quite a few people on here.

You're supposed to cut away from the part and clean up with a knife anyways. It even shows this in the Gundam manuals.

The main body colors are more of a darkish grey than that green in the picture. I don't know why it's green in that one. Might've been shopped or something.
>>
>>6142764
I cut away from the part, though much closer with the godhands then with xuron nippers, then i either shave it down with the rounded xacto knife. I forget which number it is, or I'll sand it with high grit sand paper.
>>
>>6142733
Like the other anon said, just cut further away from the piece and the nub marks won't be so bad.

It looks stunning when put together with the decals on. Just be prepared for a model kit that is finicky as absolute fuck. I don't have any spare action bases to put it up on so I just have it standing in a stoic pose. Anything more would've been a pain in my ass to get right.

Hm, that's surprising. Also, when I looked it up, results for the Gundam Planet nippers also came up, which I've been hearing are a strong competitor for the Godhand throne. They're $12 less, support for them is US-based and apparently quite helpful, and they have a higher rating on Amazon even WITH more reviews than the Godhand.

Fuck, guess I'm abstaining from this group build since I don't have any other non-Gundam kits with me at the moment. Also, when you put together L10 and L9 or L14+L17 and L8, sand the pegs; the parts fit for those is incredibly tight, and it made me wish I had brought some sandpaper with me to uni.

Have any of you guys built the new Koto Eva 01 Tv. Ver yet? One sprue seems to be missing a piece (M-5) and it's not in the bag. Weird thing is, it looks like that piece was clipped out at the base of the spurs holding it. I'm wondering if this is a holdover from the original kit that is no longer needed, so they clipped it off at the factory? Or if there was some kind of mistake and I legitimately am missing a piece. I don't think I saw it in the instructions either but I'm still feeling wary.

I'm unsure what to do right now...if I should start building and hope for the best, or contact HLJ and complain.

I think it's more the complexity or supposed complexity when you build something like a single leg. Or a fear of ruining a "costly" kit because of sheer incompetence. My first MG at that. Feels like I should be better than this. Dunno, frustrated and blogposting.

So laugh at me or whatever.

Crotch chain is a tow cable. I just stuck it there because I didn't want to cut off the plug for the power cables and I didn't want a weird hole where the cables used to go. The cable actually spins too and can support the Efreet's weight.

The right knee is a sniper support, I forgot to stick it on. It's the extra collar piece the freet comes with.

Because it's an incredible design that hits the sweet spot of being elegantly simple while still having visual interest. It looks like a believable war machine (at least as far as humanoid mechs go) thanks to said simple design and muted colours. The body shape that's more average and not exaggerated in the way typical hero suits are or the way zeon suits are makes it more sympathetic while at the same time its head gives it an unnerving inhuman vibe. In this way it perfectly ties into the themes of the show where the human value in war is questioned. The leo is not a hero or a villain, it is a tool and as it represents the vulnerable human element in contrast to the mobile dolls, it doesn't let you forget that it is also a weapon.

Lunagazer is the revive hyaku shiki, so it's very good. The backpack is the weakest part since Luna is obviously designed for the ring, but it does make for a nice zeta looking backpack.

The forearms are in a weird position though, so I modified them to have the gauntlets on the correct side. You get a decent amount of spare parts like hyaku shiki head, feet, chest, bracelets w/o gauntlet mounts, a really nice 3mm>balljoint peg hat was used for hyaku shiki backpack.

Also the manual comes with heavy english so it's really cancerous.

Wow, fuck....I don't even like the Exia Dark Matter design, but that looks unbelievably dope. Is there any danger to exposing your toys to blacklight for extended periods of time? And do they make sorta like...compact/slim blacklight fixtures by any chance? I sorta wanna set up blacklights as permanent lighting on my shelves to make my clear toys glow.

How do you guys clean your nubs? When I knife them I leave chunks missing. When I sand I can never get to to sand the nub and it ends up sanding around it til I press down harder losing a bit of the shape.

Friendly reminder that unless you're Francis T. Warbucks, it's 100% cheaper to buy Pakistani scalpels that are in every way superior to Xacto. They just don't stay sharp as long, which is fine cause you can 10 for $1..

1 Xacto handle and 10 blades = $15
5 Scalpels (2 sizes) and 300 blades = $15

Ebay has them for cheapest, buy from Pakistan for cheapest results. Do not pay more than $5.00 for 100 blades, they will always accept offers, usually comes with a handle. I got 5 handles and 100 blades for around $7.00. There's a place in Florida that sells them just as cheap as Pakistan, user name is odontomed2011 that I buy all my stuff from.
>>
>>6145443

I want some type 9's but they never show up.

Note that there are 2 types of handles, #3 and #4, one is just slightly bigger, I recommend #3 because you have more blade clearance.
>>
>>6145414
>It's just light
Light can do a lot of harm, man...for instance, sunlight or using the wrong kind of lightbulbs can cause your toys to yellow or even become brittle. It's why most good shelving setups use LEDs, which are safe. It's good to know what effects different kinds of lights can have on your collection.
>>
>>6145449
Of these blade types, which do you recommend as best for Gunpla? I'm gonna try em out. Also, how long does one blade typically last you before going dull?

Here is a lineup for comparison.

#4 handle with #25 blade
#3 handle with #11 blade
Xacto fat style
Xacto thin style

I would recommend the #11's because they sit further up the blade than the #25. The #4 handle seems to offer less blade clearance in general, so I'd say stick with #3 handles, but I do want to try some of the non geometric blades like the #16 or #26, maybe #18, but as of yet I've only tried #25 and #11. #10a looks like a winner but they're not common to find from what I can tell.

They take a little time to get used to, I have a few I wrapped in heat shrink that I like over these, but once you get used to the flat scalpel compared to the round Xacto, it's a lot better. The profile is crazy different but you just change the blade every time you sit down instead of once every other kit or whatever. 100% recommend it.
>>
>>6145472
Okay last question: safety. How secure are these things? I don't wanna go with some cheap knives only to have them come apart on me and cut me. I feel a little iffy about the entirety of the blade being exposed on the #3 handle...how does it lock in?

The way they fit together, you would think they don't stay put.

I'll simply say this : You need pliers to attach or detach them, they're 100% solid. It's a lot different than a normal sort of spinning chuck style fastener from Xacto but I assure you it's no less tight.

Once you get used to the profile of a flat blade, you will never go back. Having a new blade every day is the bee's knees. If you know how to fiddle with heatshrink, build the handle up with a few layers or add tape so it's not so thin in your hand and it'll be easy as pie.

I've cut myself a lot more with these than Xacto, the sharpness is crazy.

Couldn't you stick these in an Xacto handle? Try it and post results.

No. The #11 is too long for fat style Xacto but too wide for skinny style Xacto. #26 is too wide to fit either.

I suppose you could trim them but they're tempered steel (?), whatever they are, they're not something you can cut easily. I tried very hard to cut them to retrofit them and failed. Ultimately, whether they will work for you or not is going to be a case of if you can get used to the handles. But provided you can, it's more efficient in every way.

There's also some 'fat' style handles if you'd prefer those.

So, I got one of the old MG Ingrams as a gift. They have these rubbery pieces that slip over the joints. Does anyone know how that stuff might react to good ol' Tamiya TS-80? I'm hoping to dull down the rubbery shine a little, but don't wanna risk like, i dunno, melting it or making it sticky or something with the spray.

Also, one more question: it's generally known that Tamiya TS-80 and Mr. Super Clear are the best matte topcoats, but what is the best gloss money can buy? I want the white parts to shine real nice like the Yamato Ingrams do. Oh, and no Pledge suggestions please, I've tried it and don't care for the way it looks as a topcoat.

It didn't. What did the pilot do, wrap 5,000 rolls of duct tape on there to keep the blade attached?

Get that shit off of there. Cap it with some plaplate, make it look like crudely bolted on scrap metal. Fully attach the sword to the underside of the arm with some tiny brackets.

Also your battle damage is pretty bad, but that's a given. All battle damage is terrible by default, so I won't blame you for failing to win an uphill fight.

Keep in mind, it's likely that virtually no physical shop will have "plaplate" by name. They will most have styrene available from Plastruct or Evergreen.
The only people that call it "plaplate" are extremist internet weeaboos that build gunpla (a very small percentage of the overall modeller population), because it's the brand name for styrene made by Tamiya and it sounds waaaay more weebtastic than "styrene".

TAKE NOTE, this guy did a fairly decent weathering job. It's not the best, but it looks like there was some thought put into it at least, and isn't just "smudging it up and poking holes in it." Realistically, you should look up tank and plane weathering tutorials. Those will teach you right. You should also think about what parts would wear down realistically--generally edges of parts get the most wear. And remember the number one rule of weathering: LESS IS MORE. Subtlety will get you a long way.

It's good, but like the other anon said, get rid of that green stuff
You should try scratch building some internal detail, using cloth on joints is usually going to look off
Apart from the shield, everything looks close to the actual marines but with odd proportions, the chest and shoulders are perfect but make the legs and arms look puny in comparison
Try 1/100 zaku legs, but that's probably going to be too big
You should change the hands to 1/100 tho, marine have huge hands
The bayonet should be thicker and shorter (I'd do away with it personally)
A standard rx-78 shield already has 2 tones and the view port
A gloss coat would also look more inline with their cinematic look
I really like it nonetheless but that skipped leg day look is killing me

So whats the best RX-78 MG? The origin or the 3.0? Figured my first MG should be the grand-daddy of all Gundam.
>>
>>6146562

3.0 for detail and slightly better proportions

Origin for everything else, including articulation, gimmicks, and accessories.

OYW for best of both worlds

OYW's articulation and gimmicks kind of suck by modern standards though. Its main pull is that its quite possibly the best looking RX-78 sculpt of all time.

I pulled mine out of storage when I visited my parents in December. It still looks as great as I remember. One night while I was sleeping it toppled off the desk and the fingers (which I had separated, and honestly were always rather loose) went flying...I still have no clue where like three of them went. Really unfortunate. Actually...does anyone know if I could buy compatible replacement hands anywhere? Hopefully with better engineering?

RGs are gorgeous and real marvels of engineering, but I hate the scary tightness of the frame and the fragility. I have parts popping off every time I pick one up to pose. Pretty as they are, that prompted me to mostly stick with HGs and MGs.

Not sure if there are more. What I really want to know is if the renewal kits will feature improved engineering like the Cutlass improvements for the Baselard design or the Kagutsuchi variants new ankle design
>>
>>6147171
The tightness goes away once you've fully extended it once, you only have to be really careful with them that one time. And not all of them are fragile.
My main problem with RGs is that the abundance of tiny parts means they can be really finicky to assemble and sometimes things that aren't obvious mistakes can really screw up a kit, like for example the GN drives on the 00

I just finished building the Super Minipla Ideon. It was pretty fun, surprisingly involved, plenty of poseability, and lots of surface detail to panel line. It's about as tall as a shorter MG, like the Gundamwing ones. I painted a few parts, but it mostly looks great oob. I will note that it has pretty nice color separation if you feel like painting! The red plastic is a bit shit though. It doesn't feel like it'll crumble in my hands or anything, but it just looks cheapo and it developed stress marks REALLY easily. I guess I shouldn't be expecting much from candy toy plastic, but yeah. This scratched my itch for a modern non-SOC Ideon pretty well.

Mostly good! I'd give it an 8/10.

I finally pulled the trigger on a perfect grade Zaku, they're cheap as hell for PG kits so I thought why not. Was tossing it up between the RX-178 for a while but I'll just get that as my next kit. Anyone here got any experience with the PG Zaku? I know it's an older kit and might not quite be up to scratch in some areas, but I'm still pretty hyped. Only ever done one other PG and that was the Strike Rouge a number of years back.
