For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

I'm working on a Gouf Revive and want to file the numbs off properly. I have sandpaper from ~400-1500 grit and have used it to get the nubs on the first parts down to nice smooth surfaces, but they've got lots of scratch marks. What should I do or what sandpaper should I use to "polish" away the marks?

What are some alternatives to sandpaper? The sandpaper is nice but I don't like the idea of having to replace it. I understand I may have to replace tools as well but I'd prefer to spend longer periods without cutting/buying sandpaper for convenience's sake.

Kit never ever ever.
>>
>>5881865
>>5881875

Bandai should really need to include parts of Apsalus to HGUC kits, just like wat americans do in their toys. I'm sure it would boost their sales instead on giving us P Bandais.
>>
>>5881952
But how should I polish the Gouf scuffs?
>>
>>5881975
sandpaper. it wont wear out as fast as you think especially if you're wetsanding and even more if you use a file to get rid of the nub then use sandpaper to get rid of the scuff
>>
>>5881979
No no, I mean should I be using a sandpaper grit higher than 1500 to polish away the scuffs? It's a separate question from the alternative-to-sandpaper one.
>>
>>5882007
Use 2k then just flatcoat it, anything higher doesn't matter
>>
>>5881929
I thought that myself but I guess it's harder at the smaller scale than pieces more than twice the size.
>>
>>5882011
I suppose I should also mention that you should sand lightly at higher grits, 400grit leaves some pretty deep grooves if you sand hard.
>>

>>
>>5882011
>>5882021
I did sand rather lightly with the 400, no problems there. The scuffing is quite luckily only aesthetic and doesn't actually dig into the parts. I don't know if I'll be able to flat coat though, I live in an apartment in NYC with no roof access.
>>
>>5882032
I would add a pair of angled modeling tweezers and swap the ancient HGUC Char's Zaku with like the HG The Origin one or something else from within the last like five years

>>
>>5882032
Seconding the Origin Char's Zaku.

Although you should consider getting the HGUC if you want a shit-ton of seam welding practice.
>>
>>5882032
Don't need the tweezers or file really. Get sandpaper instead and a hobby knife if you feel like investing.
>>
>>5882174
They are good to have but I wouldn't recommend shipping them from Japan. Many hand tools can be found for cheap at your local hardware/crafts stores.
>>
>>5882174
Angled tweezers are like the best thing though they make stickers several degrees easier
>>

quick question about seam-line removal

i understand you can use putty too, can you just put a layer of putty over the lines then sandpaper it?

or is it more effective to do the seam wielding with the plastic cement?

i've tried it a few times but I can never seem to get the cement to "ooze" out of the seams
>>
>>5882279
Doesn't give structural integrity, so any shearing of the part occurs and you're gonna have a seamline again.
>>
>>5882279
I often do both cement and putty.
>>
>>5882287
>Doesn't give structural integrity
This. Don't ever putty something you haven't fixed in place first or it will end in tears.
>>
>>5882338
It's especially bad for jointed kits. When you articulate the joints, you are indirectly exerting force to split open the seams.

The HGUC F91 is a newer one. Articulation wise it's fine and I guess a step behind a Revive kit, but the proportions look nasty to me.

I'm painting my kit for the first time, using sprays. I'm getting incredibly frustrated because even though I've practiced with the cans, I can't get a good thin coat of primer or spray paint. It's all either grainy mist or fuckhuge splashes of runny color. It might have to do with the fact that I live in a hot, high humidity country (we're talking 26c 70% humidity at night, even higher temps during the day). I really enjoy building kits (so far) and painting looks to be overall satisfying, but this is just killing me.

I already ordered an airbrush and compressor, but the compressor will take months to get here (ordered through sealmodel by boat so that shipping and taxes won't make it cost twice as much). Can't wait to be able to do this properly and avoid rattlecans altogether (I plan on airbrushing the primer on as well).

This is going to be for a small local show in two months so the battery only has to last a few hours. I picked up some grip plate patterned styrene to detail up the base with too.

There's also the giant burn/melted portion on the breastplate. I really wish that wasn't part of the halo 4 design or that the models had ommited that part. Its in an area that you can't just fill it in and smooth it over with putty too as a deep and wide panel cuts through the area and there is supposed to be some tiny surface detail on it.

I love doing shit like this, get an NG kit that has no HG version, like the ZAFT GuAIZ, or DINN, and use the equivalent HG parts to bring them to as close to HG standard for the line as possible.

For GuAIZ i used an HG Dreadnought Gundam as the base. fir the DINN you would need a CGUE HG. Also just converted a Yzak custom ZAKU into an HG using parts from an old GINN kit i had. Bought that one for the Slash pack (chain guns).

>>

I kinda wonder what happened to the model department when G-Reco was happening. Most of them were pretty bad with a few good ones in the mix.
>>
>>5884698
they were designed for anime first and model second instead of the other way around
>>
>>5884702
It's a shame they really had a lot of potential for it.
>>
>>5884698
Apparently they weren't expecting them to sell and had to try and ram a bunch out to make up for demand when people actually wanted them
>>
>>5884772
And then once they did pump out a bunch demand/interest suddenly dropped off and they swapped focus back to Try kits.
>>
>>5884806
That's because the show was ending when convention says that you should at least show off products before they show up in animation. G-Reco was the only case where a bunch of kits were late to being showed. I mean the Catsith kit was only showed off long after it showed up in the show.
>>
So apparently the primer I was sold (and the only rattle can primer I could find in my area that was supposedly fit for plastic) is not fit for plastic at all. It looked fine when I primed stuff, but then I did some masking and when I took off the masking tape it peeled off some of the primer. This happened on multiple pieces. All were washed before being primed, and some had been set to dry for a week between priming and masking+painting.

So what do I do now? Is it possible to touch things up and continue somehow or am I fucked? I don't have the materials to strip down all of the parts to the bare plastic (at least not without dunking them all in a pool of acetone and probably destroying the plastic itself).

"beautiful gloss finish" actually takes skill, the best inexperienced painter can hope for is semi-gloss that is in no way "beautiful", so shit advice

I was saying that the gloss on sinanju looks great, and i'm pretty sure semi-gloss has its own term, satin, which is definitely not what your inexperienced painted can hope for

>>5885838
Semi-gloss is semi-gloss, go to a home depot and look at samples. Satin/matte/flat is a whole different thing.

Me too because those from G-Reco are some of my fav non UC designs and the same designer's work got really good HGs for Iron Blooded Orphan... so I don't think it was them shitting on his designs. The Man Rodi and Gusion are about as unwieldy, or even more unwieldy than the Space Jahannam but those are both fun, solid HG kits.

Space Jahannam is one of my fav not-ZakuII-but-totally-a-Zaku-II designs and I wish it hadn't gotten such a shit quality series of kits. Luckily, the other fav design from G-Reco supposedly have a decent kit, Gastima, which I still haven't built yet to this day.

Heavyarms EW is the worst one. The entire thing that makes heavyarms cool is that every part of its body is integrated into guns and having it just hold the gatling instead ruins that.

Yes, the Kimaris 1st appearance would be right at home in G-Reco. Looking at my space jahannam, it's even more confusing to see how some joints were structured, even the wrist joint, when you compare it with the IBO, it's clearly not made to last... and the shoulders, IBO has these nice separate joints so they can be raised up to not hinder the movement... but a lot of the G Reco kits just have them as huge chunks connected with a single polycap...

I have this kit, and I haven't done anything to it, but I want to make this ship, at least, get started.

anyone have any idea what decal solvent it needs? I can't find anything on the type of decals the delta quadrant used.

I was considering making it a bit different, like it'd become a personal ship/home for someone, rather than a Starfleet ship, but I also do not want it to look blobby.

are acrylic paints fine for resin models like this? thinned with water? or do I need a different thinner?
>>
>>5887724
my main thing to ask, is, if I painted it in silver acrylic, would i be able to apply the decals later? or would the solvent melt the kit or the decals?
>>
>>5887725

>>
>>5887724
Resin builders are not as common in these threads, maybe one of them will drop by and answer your questions. Have you tried reading the guide?
I'm 90% sure your decals will be water slides, so just use your favourite waterslide solvent. Make sure to gloss coat it as usual. In fact, the painting procedure should be exactly the same as any other model kit, except maybe the primer.
>>
>>5887766
after a quick pass with acrylic paint, it will look fine with the acrylic paint, but I definitely need a silvery primer to get the paint to stick, and then the decal solvent and whatever else I need.

I just don't know how to use the decals.

at least my paint rubbed off nice and easy with a water rinse.

>are acrylic paints fine for resin models like this
You need to prime it with resin primer first, after that you can do whatever you would do to a plastic model.

Water based acrylic will not stick to resin without primer.
>>
>>5887803
Serious question, is this your first time painting a model kit?

The scene still happens in Glory of the Losers, so I'd say that's a pretty good reason? I don't understand your complaint

Have you guys ever tried gluing styrene with acetone?
>>
>>5887816
some of them do have the inside reproduced
>>
>>5888143
it will work but there is no reason to do it when model cement exists.
>>
>>5888233
Yeah, I know, but I was just curios to know if someone here tried it.
I guess I will have to look what holds the styrene stronger now.
>>
>>5888143
>>5888233
Model cement is basically a solvent cocktail with some plastic resin mixed in, which is why some cements are thicker than others (in the case of "plastic cement" it's usually made for polystyrene and contains polystyrene resin).

You can try melting some polystyrene into acetone to create a very thin plastic slurry or goop and it might be usable as a cement
>>
>>5888257
>You can try melting some polystyrene into acetone to create a very thin plastic slurry or goop and it might be usable as a cement

people do this sometimes to make their own putty that color matches the plastic. chemically it will work but id rather use regular putty to fill in seams then just paint everything.
>>
>>5888289
That putty technically closer to a modeling cement and desu it would work better than regular putty because it will fuse the plastic like a cement with the plastic resin helping it set. That said, acetone is smelly, toxic, and you need to seal it really well to prevent the putty from drying back into plastic inside your glass jars.
>>
>>5888625
I should mention. It's also possible acetone could permanently damage the plastic, so it depends. I know people use acetone to make ABS slurry that seems to work out okay for pure ABS. Not sure about Polystyrene, but you can use any old model cement to make polystyrene slurry.

>Been contemplating buying a Jameru Fin as of late
>Bandai restocks the kit this very month

Well this makes my decision a bit easier.

Stupid noob question, but is it okay to paint in the separate colors on the kit while leaving the rest as is with a top coat app for matte consistency?

Not trying to be lazy here, the colors it comes molded in are just perfect as is IMO.

Spent the evening pinning together this absolute beauty.
Only problem so far has been a loose right shoulder, just thickened the joint with tape.
A fair few fiddly bits to be attached like the leg vents, but with pinning complete, now onto prep, fun times ahead.
>>
>>5888796
Looks nice man I kinda miss nicely casted parts. I'm working on this piece of shit arteme gundam. E2046 need to just shut shop, their kits are unusable.
>>
>>5888801
yeah, I avoid e2046 like the damn plague.
Got an artemie coming myself off taobao, fingers crossed the casting is decent.
This thing is an absolute treat.

Got an action base and finished my second build today. Thanks to the anon that recommended the z'gok, it was a blast and a half to build, and it's articulation is off the charts!

>>
>>5888846
How was the build?
>>
>>5888854
started around 2 and finished the build around 7 with a half hour break somehwere in the mix. Panel lined and applied Decals from 7-8:15. Wasn't bad at all, and holy shit that inner frame. I had no idea it was possible to make parts with joints like that on the runner. Also, if RGs are supposed to be hand grenades, then this must be the exception, I've been fidling with it a lot and the kneecap may have fallen off once.

>>

It's kind of a meme, but also bear in mind that it's a lot of detail on such a small frame. You can only expect so much. You're a pretty quick builder, anon.
>>
>>5888904
>You're a pretty quick builder, anon.
I probably don't sand nubs as much as I should, but since I don't intend to start painting right yet, I'd rather have little nub marks than huge scratches from sanding too much.
>>
>>5888915
Looks clean to me. Also, if you go so far as topcoating, you don't have to worry about sanding marks at all, dude.
>>
>>5888958
lel, you can't tell from my shitty picture, but the upper arms are a mess. I need to go back and touch up several spots.

Does top coat help disguise the clear parts from the stickers?

Cleavers from either the Zaku amazing booster set or the IBO axe set.

Or failing that they make a system weapon set with a zaku axe and a set with gouf style swords/spear.

Of course, matte over plastic isn't quite the same as matte over paint but it hardly makes a difference, and provided it looks good to you who even cares

It's called the G-Xiphos Atmospheric Entry. It's for the "Ace Custom" build.
