Pathfinder General /pfg/

What game was the most disappointing bamboozle for you? Maybe the game picked players and you got in but it was a bamboozle anyway?

To those what were wondering,

is voice and text, not just voice only. I saw some people asking about it in the last thread.
>>
>>55226366
None!

All the games I liked were real, and I got into all of them to boot.
>>
>>55226463
There just isn't a voice and text option.

Feel free to apply anyway and I'll put it to a majority vote on if we go text or voice.

Can a life oracle choose to take inflict spells as their freebies and still take channel positive energy?

I see little reason to keep the cure spells around since I'm also taking Pei zin which has free lay on hands.
>>
>>55226987
No. You either channel evil and use inflict or channel positive and use cures.

>>55227932
You should inspect his character sheet and bring it up with the GM. There is a consistent tendency with that individual's characters that I've noticed, dating all the way back to the RotJR character that started it all, and that is to take highly situational bonuses from miscellaneous class features and report them as static, "always on" bonuses.

Alright /pfg/ Its ime to take a step back and look at yourself. Take a long, hard look at yourself and what you do as a player.

Now, after some introspection tell me, what's that one reoccuring theme or gimmick that you've only just now realized that you keep doing with all of your characters and builds?

Me, personally, I keep making Wis based builds all the time, even when I don't intend to.
>>
>>55229130
>what's that one reoccuring theme or gimmick that you've only just now realized that you keep doing with all of your characters and builds?

I tend to make older white male characters that endure some sort of tragedy or hardship in their backstory, though mechanically they always tend to be martials with a heavy focus on Wisdom.
>>
>>55229130
All my characters meet 2/3 of these:
Minimum of 14 Int, decent Cha, low Wis. Usually characters who are a good deal more clever than they appear.

Always some sort of hardship or isolating incident in their backstory, but it's self-inflicted; brought on by the character's choices, rather than fate or luck.

Always good and/or lawful.

'Hilariously Tragic' backstories, sexually charged characters, and a tendency to quirk eyebrows and roll shoulders.

Since most of my gaming experience outside of pathfinder consists of Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer 40k roleplay, I'll be the first to admit that my range is a little narrow.

While I try my best when it comes to writing up my PF characters, I invariably fall back on my tried and tested character archetypes of unscrupulous spook, angry cop, religious fanatic, unhelpful bureaucrat, mad scientist, amoral spellcaster and the occasional frightened imbecile.

I mean, I'm trying my best to break out of my comfort zone and try to come up with something a little more "anime" for your games but I guess old habits just die hard.

What would be a good transition to Sahuagin? My players are coming up on the Twelfth Seros War (AD&D conversion). The sea devils will have maneuvers, and maybe psionics. Okay, so I'm trying to basically make a super Saiyan.

>Monk of the Four Winds archetype
>Takes Aspect of Ki-Rin at lvl 17
>Human race bonus
>Vow of Chains
>Vow of Poverty
>Hadouken feat
>Point blank shot feat
>Precise shot feat
>Focused strike feat
>Deadly Aim

Aspect of Ki-rin turns him gold and silver with long hair so that's a plus for super Saiyan aesthetics, but is this a viable build to blast people with Kamehame-hadoukens?
>>
>>55229130
The only thing I can say ALL of my characters have had is 10+ int. That's strictly mechanical, though. Varied backstories, genders, heights, weights, races, psychological profiles, etc. There are trends, like I prefer martials over casters, but I can't honestly say I have them share some aspect or trait. Maybe I'm being too literal when thinking of "all" my characters. I suppose only 3 had children, and none of them had living spouses. That's more to justify running off to do stupid dangerous shit in caves than as an overarching theme. None of them were bald?

I like to play outlaws and criminals, usually tragic characters who, had they the opportunity of a normal life, could've turned out differently. I am also generally a sucker for stories about redemption and forgiveness so, whether they're able to rediscover their self-determination and find some sort of modicum of redemption or it all tragically falls apart with them ultimately failing to restore their self-respect/honor/whatever. Its all fun.
I do also enjoy playing characters who aren't mentally tough as a rock, who're dealing with both the insecurities and stress caused by their profession(Usually a freelancer/adventurer) and their personal issues which the lifestyle has brought to the surface.

Cursed with horrible luck.

It's not so much a writing quirk as much as fate had forced it upon me, I once made a character with the express goal to kill the first character I ever played in under the pretense that "they were the ones where the curse originated from"

I still want to play that character, but every game I try to play them in dies within the first few sessions.
>>
>>55230819
The fact that "horrible luck" and "fantastic luck" aren't things you can base a character around in Pathfinder is one of the great letdowns I have with the system.
>>
>>55230901
"Fantastic Luck" is literally what the Archeologist archetype represents.
>>
>>55230901
I can understand why they want to avoid it. Probability alteration in a dice based game is a slippery slope, though it does make for fun ideas.
>>
>>55230943
That's pretty good, but one archetype for one class isn't exactly the widespread options one would hope for, after all Bards aren't the only ones that can have good/bad luck.

>>55230974
I dunno, Witches are all about probability manipulation with some of their hexes.

Funnily enough if you get enough things that let you do rerolls your enemy being able to corner you and say "Your luck has run out" would have a literal meaning if you'd actually run out of x/day rerolls of things.

Listen son, as a Martial character if you wanna stay viable at higher levels, basically the whole game past lvl 5, you're going to rely HEAVILY on magic items and stuff. Sadly, Vow of Poverty prevents you from getting and using such items, and honestly the minor and underwhelming"benefit" you get from the vow is completely not worth it by any means. Vow of Poverty is trash, and no sane person should use it or the Monk Vows as they currently are.

By taking Vow of Poverty, you're essentially making yourself into literally the weakest character in the game. You won't be a Super Saiyan, the Wizard will be closer to that. By comparison your Hercule Satan, but without any of the money or fame

>>55232704
First of all, for any of the builds with Unarmed options, especially UC Monk, take Feral Combat Training for your Bite (image your Flurry of Bites, combined with your Grab special abilities). Also, Kraken Style or some other grappling based style might be interesting. Now, Serpent -Fire Adept might not be an optimal Archetype, but it could work for you. Plus, the power boost of being a TRex makes it so I feel you can even take an archetype vanilla Monk and find some fun stuff to do with it. Go nuts.

For Warpriest, Disenchanter, Arsenal Chaplain, and maybe Sacred Fist might be interesting.

The mental image of a Preacher Inquisitor T rex is hilarious to me. Also, just imagine a Tyrannosaurus is Torquemada esque robes

Question about kineticist blast size growth (porphyra):

What is the growth pattern for composite blasts? Simples are d6, which arguably become d8 but what about composites? Does 2d6 become 2d8 or 3d6?

And say I have an item that does +1 damage per die: Is it +1 per d6 die for simples and +1 per 2d6 for composites? Is it +2 per 2d6 per composites? If the composite blast were to increase to 3d6 per grade of the blast as above, would that become +3 per grade as well?
>>
>>55233363
Yes you can, even a gorilla only has 15 STR. Think before you post.
>>
>>55234396
Okay, an ape has 15 Str to make things fair mechanically.

But realistically, a chimp or gorilla would have a Strength score somewhere in the low 20s at least.
>>
>>55234430
Well, a lot of the strength apes have is derived from the fact that they can use more of their strength at all times than humans can.

Human muscles are capable of the same actions, it just requires the right stimuli.

long story short, it's less 'how strong are you' and more 'how much of your strength can you use'

Yeah, fuck DM's like that. Doubly so if they then go "Well, the caster's not having trouble." Of course not, dipshit, they don't need +x items of whatever to fight bigger and bigger monsters, they naturally gain power through better spells.

So I thinking about playing a lizardman bloodrager or some kind of big martial class yah, but I was talking to the group I was gonna be joining and so far they have a tank like guy someone who somewhat qualifies as a healer and a titangrip berserker, so he was saying they would appreciate someone more apt with traps and the sneaking portion

What would fit thematically with a lizardman doing traps and sneaking. I kinda liked the idea of a tribal inquisitor lizardman, but I haven't really looked at many classes as I was thinking of what I might be while at work

I'm the guy from yesterday who's working on a "stat a community" program. I figured out why I was having such trouble with my calculations. I was doing the math linearly and trying to create a split. The issue being that it was basically impossible for a young person to have more levels than someone older than them. I was simply conflating life experience with level gain.

However!

I then remembered something a friend was telling me about from an L5R campaign; Exploding dice. Those who sought adversity, gaining a level from it, are more likely to make a similar gamble in the future! (And that can represent a merchant making a risky business decision or a smith pushing himself to the edge of his skill, not merely combat challenges.) Thus, by utilizing an exploding dice recursive method, characters who roll level growth in the first place, will gain more levels, properly simulating the divergence of the steady growth population and the ambitious persons who seek challenge.

Here is the breakdown from my latest test, utilizing a population of 450k (Approx the population of Brevoy in the PF standard Golarion setting). It seems pretty accurate ot a "We're all Heroes Now" sort of setting like Golarion. Maybe just a _bit_ high, but I can adjust the numbers a bit and run it again.

Since it's either fixed (Alteration Amplification, etc) or two steps (Esoteric Modification):

For steps, it goes 1>d2>d3>d4>d6>d8>d10>2d6>2d8>3d6>3d8 and so on.

a d6blast gaining two steps becomes d10s
2d6 becomes 3d6.

The only way DHB is "overoptimized" in Intrigue, at least, is the simple fact that he's the only pure martial in the party, and is decently designed to fill that role.

Joke characters but I try to optimize them.

Halfling Stalker with dips to shadowdancer and Hellcat Stealth with ungodly stealth checks to hide in plain sight 5ever.

Blue Vitalist (guardian) with minmaxed healing/temp hp solutions, but 5 strength so I needed to use starting gold to buy a riding dog just to carry my quarterstaff. The dog was a tweaked out whippet because I thought it'd be funnier.

Grippli Druid with a tortoise animal companion that he insisted on riding everywhere. The tortoise got barding before he even got armor.

I could go on.

Friend of mine want to run a session of Pathfinder for me and two other mates (me and one of them will be 1st time players in RPG ever).
Setting is ancient egypt themed, so we're all hyped and want to sink into that world.

I checked classes avaliable, and I'm thinking about starting with a shaman.
Backstory would be simple: my character would get near-death-experience because of exhaustion on dessert during his travel. In last grasp of consciousness, he'd pray for mercy to gods. Fact is, that one of his ansestors was a shaman, but he in person never showed any kind of that abilities (he was regular human, small trader, noone more). Those abilities manifested that time (uncontrolled), and he was posessed by spirit of Bast (or just one of her minions), who kept him alive, but for price - spirit is controling his body as long as spirit/familiar is present.
During adventure he would be competiting to get control over his body with spirit, but for most of time it will be spirit talking and doing stuff - most of dialogues would be in 3rd person, spirit and character would have diffrent motives and vievs on people/quests etc.

What do you think?

To reliably do so? I'm not sure, but I've also got to adjust the numbers overall. My random age function currently weighs all ages equally, but people weren't as likely to make it to old age in the medieval period; war, famine, pestilence, etc. So the level generation will need some adjustment after I've update the age generation.

Monstrous Mount and get a Griffon who. while only 30ft speed and 40ft fly (20ft when mounted) it is far more devastating on it's own, a wolf or a horse if you have no intention of grabbing Monstrous Mount. Ride by attack of course. Furious Focus if you intend to abandon the shield or get a quickdraw one so that you never suffer from power attack when you charge. Mounted Skirmisher and Trick Riding if you come to a situation where charging is not an option.

We got to watch the Death Note movie, and drank heavily throughout. It was lovely.

Got to play my Steamer/Spacetube/Internet Celebrity Envoy, who was a barrel of fun. Though, I must say I'm not a fan of the system as a whole; money is too scarce, too many classes/builds are outright useless, and you absolutely need someone with maxed piloting, engineering, and computers in order to interact with a good portion of the content. Not even Perception or Diplomacy were that important in PF.

They claimed that SF did away with trap options, but it's now worse than ever.

I don't think they come here. It's currently Eleasis (August) 1368 DR in the campaign.

The plot hook they found was a "platinum crown with smoky quartz (morion) (800 gp)," which is required for Velsharoon's ascension from lich to demigod. The elf is one of his cultists.

Neither of the PCs has the skills necessary to find and stop Harper spies, so I don't know how I'm going to make an adventure out of helping his apotheosis.

Next year, the Twelfth Seros War starts. Sahuagin and other sea monsters will attack every village and city on the coast. The PCs must defend their property and enclaves.

I was quite literally not allowed to do anything as the GM rigged the game around the actions of his friends.

Every time I try to do something he either downright ignores me, pms me not to do it in favor of one of his friends, on the times he allows it he makes a circus of the test as he fishes for a failure on my part and a success on his friends part. There is many instances but one particular situation stood out.

>Dungeon crawl as we explore some cave full of spider ayys
>We find the hull of a ship that apparently crashed into the mountain
>Explore ship in hopes of reactivating it as our ticket out of said jungle planet
>He discourages taking 10 on rolls, thus far, every single take 10 I make is an autofail despite my maxed skill mod
>Run into a terminal
>Being the party technomancer, I begin working on the terminal
>GM makes me roll computers, likely banking on a failure so one of his homies can take my place
>I roll a nat 20 scoring a 28, the highest possible result one could get at this level
>He immediately makes me roll perception saying that its in a language that I don't understand
>I roll a 14, pretty good, I am happy to be allowed to do something for once
>Nope, apparently an 18 perception isnt good enough at level 1
>I ask him if I can use culture, he denies me this check saying 'lmao aliens u never seen this shit before' much like other situations where I try to do something that I'm good at like identifying aliens with science
>He makes me back off the terminal saying nope, I failed and and makes the only other guy with tech do it, (one of his homies, with a much lower mod mind you)
>His homie rolls low
>"Lmao feel free to take 20"
>His homie autopasses the check
>"Ok roll percep"
>His homie rolls low again
>"Lmao feel free to take 20"
>The terminal registers his homie as captain of the new ship

Jesus chirst, I told him from the start that I never wanted the position but I guess he was afraid I would steal it.

I was a fool for keeping at it with the dozen other red flags like the nonstop stormwind and sfg hate rants. "Fuck sfg for criticizing solarian's poor design, don't they know that cha is the strongest stat in the game!" and constant attempts to shower with groups with favors like rewarding one of his niggers for a "well written" bio by grating him extra skill points.

Hate when GMs do that. Fucking bullshit.

Could a Zelda-style dungeon work (as in, be fun to play for most people without requiring certain 3PP materials or extensive houserules) in Pathfinder? Assume that when I say "Zelda-style", I mean a dungeon that meets at least four of the following criteria:

1) Has a particular item which, if not necessary to complete the dungeon the intended way, at least makes things much easier.

2) Has a definite boss that resides in a location which the PCs cannot reach early by the intended way.

3) Includes at least one puzzle, preferably one that the item from #1 helps solve.

4) Includes items or information analogous to map and/or compass to help the PCs navigate, and is large enough to make such things useful.

5) Allows numerous opportunities for the party to rest or otherwise regain their strength, allowing for each fight in the dungeon to assume the PCs are at or at least near full capacity, in order to mirror the plentiful hearts and magic potions of a Zelda game.

Just to clarify, these conditions don't need to be met in the same way a Zelda game would meet them. For example, for #1, a common Zelda item would be a bow or boomerang, but in Pathfinder the dungeon's "key item" would more likely be things like items that grant abilities like flight, water breathing, True Seeing, or complicated effects that open new doors (figuratively and literally) to how the PCs can explore. They'd also probably come in sets, so that each PC can get one.

Also, when I say "the intended way" through a dungeon, it's meant to imply that the dungeon was designed with a certain path in mind, but unlike in a Zelda game it is probably likely that the PCs could circumvent such "required" paths with some creative applications of their abilities. The dungeon shouldn't be designed or ran in such a way that railroads the PCs and completely negates any attempt they make at trying to find alternative ways through the dungeon, but should encourage a certain path.

I'm going to interpret "a strike of luck" as a critical hit that rolls max damage. For a child with a STR mod of 0 using a spear sized for a medium creature (1d8 damage with a x3 crit mod) that means 24 damage, so we're looking for creatures with 24 HP or less. The attack doesn't need to kill the creature outright, but does need to KO them (because even a child can perform a CDG).

As far as animals go, there's a pretty good handful. Any sort of domestic animal, like a common cat or dog or even a horse would die to damage like that, but so would some more wild beasts like a common boar or wolf. Just about any kind of normal, non-dire primate would be at least KO'd by 24 damage, from a gorilla to an orangutan. Most greater cats, like lions and tigers, won't be KO'd by 24 damage, but a mountain lion would be left at 2 HP and would probably flee after such a blow. It's not enough damage to KO something like a bear either, but it would be able to KO a common shark, which is well known as the "bear of the ocean".

As far as other kinds of monsters, it would be enough damage to kill something like any sort of humanoid assuming they aren't packing more than two or three class levels, so kobolds, goblins, and even orcs are on the table. The weakest sorts of extraplanar creatures, outsiders like a Lemure or Dretch and elementals of small size, could be knocked into the negatives even accounting for their DR. Likewise, many sorts of fae could be killed, the "biggest" of them probably being pixies or pookas. Even the youngest of true dragons wouldn't be KO'd by 24 damage, but some lesser dragons like shadow drakes would.

Really, just about anything of CR 1 or less, and some CR 2 enemies.

>>55247300
Yeah, I would expect this kind of thing to break down at higher levels, when caster can just bypass any reasonable barrier you could put in the dungeon and skill bonuses make most obstacles a breeze. I don't really like E6, but it might be good for that sort of thing.

What about just banning spells like Knock before the adventure begins so as to create a more interesting set of circumstances for the dungeons even at higher levels?

Your Rogue or Rogue equivalent can still do things like picking locks, but that's more for the various chests lying around, meanwhile the door locks are either not visible or have such heavy tumblers that you can't really "pick" them with standard tools.

I think the problem with that is that it would require the DM to do a lot of work combing through spells to decide what has to be banned up front. It's not just Knock, after all. Most spells that grant or allow for some other form of movement like Fly, Water Breathing, Dimension Door, and Spider Climb would probably need to go, and any spell that provides an effect you were planning to make a key item for a dungeon out of would have to be banned as well.

I think starting at a lower level works best, because you can design the dungeons to work around what the PCs will have available to them at the time. For a dungeon the PCs will explore at level 3 or 4, you don't have to worry about them being able to use a spell like Fly to bypass cross giant pits or whatnot, and you could easily make a Flight-granting item that dungeon's key item (allowing you to know that in future dungeons that the PCs will definitely be able to fly). At later levels, you can similarly key obstacles to higher level spells the PCs couldn't yet have, like invisible objects and illusionary walls being good for an 8th level dungeon, before the PCs could use True Seeing. If you were to ban full casters, which you should probably be doing anyway if your game is tightly focused on an "intended path", you get to push off those "deadline" levels for which you can no longer assume the PCs won't have certain spells even further.

Some specific spells like Knock might be banned, low-level utility magic mostly, but I don't think banning spells is the best solution on its own.

Very well, they are steppe frontiersmen, an area of characterized constant raiding since the breakup of the khanates that used to rule the area. Father is a former brigandine who received a parcel of land in exchange military service as an irregular, raiding the raiders instead of the towns, conducting reconnaissance patrols outside of forts and towns, and raiding the raiders and all that stuff. Mother is a tiefling who was taken/liberated as a spoil of war, used to be a concubine (either captured or sold long ago as a child).

DEX for to-hit, STR for damage with a composite bow for most archers.

Zen Archer Monk gets WIS for to-hit but still needs STR for damage on composite bows. They also get the ability to spend a ki point to increase the bow's damage die to match their unarmed strike and/or increase their range increment.

Only ranged characters I've played were a Pistolero Gunslinger and Zen Archer, though, so the above may not matter. I haven't seen the newest stuff, so there's likely things that have changed that.

Thank you, that's much more information. If the father's a landowner, he's going to attract people who want land and security, and are willing to either look past or begrudgingly accept a bit of fiendish blood to get it through their children. Or maybe his family's been at their thing on the frontier long enough that some of the raiders are starting to make other plans, and marrying would be a good way to get a foot in the door, fiend-blooded or not. Alternatively, if he's just prominent enough, maybe he and his family have started drawing people out who are less interested in his land than in the bloodline - there's always room in the world for someone plotting something a bit fiendish.

And of course, outside all the pragmatic reasons, it might be someone who's looking for a spouse that has a good background to them. And in this case, a good background means their family earned and hold their home the hard way.

How's the climate? If it gets hot or cold enough, innate resistance might be a nice plus too.

>>
>>55248671
RAW, you need both, though less strength thanks to Deadly Aim.

There are no non-class ways to get Dex to damage without 3.5 content. (Dead Eye gives Dex to damage within 30ft.)

Gunslinger gives Dex to damage with guns (or crossbows, with the archetype...) and a few other classes can give Dex to damage.

If you can talk your DM into a Dex to damage feat, then it is your go to stat.

If not, then each point of Str mod is an additional fixed damage, and each point of Dex is an extra 5% hit chance.

Hey there, /pfg/

I'm homebrewing up a class based off Ranger, except more variable. I'm calling it the Vagabond, and in a nutshell this is what the class will be able to do:

>Variable favored enemy bonuses that are gained not by selecting your favored types, but by killing your favored types and displaying a trophy of them in your Hideout
>Hideout, a location you can establish after spending a few hours in a location. It's difficult to find, protects against divination magic, and the region around it is always considered a favored terrain.
>Survivalist techniques: feats and other abilities pertaining to survival bonuses or other things that help you endure situations: Such as Endurance, Iron Will(and similar), Toughness an so forth.
>Combat Style: Much like normal ranger's, except specialized bonuses for each style, such as Dex to damage for bows, or faster reloading for firearms, or increased movement speed and natural AC for natural.

I can keep going, but I'd rather just post it when i'm finished.

That being said, is there any improvement you'd like to be made upon the normal Ranger class, or mechanics/flavor things you think would be cool, /pfg/? I'm all up for suggestions, though keep in mind I want to keep this relatively close in power to 1pp content.

Not really. Pure stat bonuses come in inherent, natural, enhancement and morale forms and only chained barbarian or a skald gets you morale bonuses to stats very much temporarily.
