Paizo Games General /pgg/ (also /pfg/)

Combining back into one thread!
How does it feel to know that Starfinder still makes you load up on cheap healing magic items (Serums of Healing Mk 1) as the best way to get back your HP when you finally take HP damage?

I'm not really thinking about that.

If the PCs get to a high enough level in my PF/Forgotten Realms game, I might use some of the Starfinder material to make a Spelljammer game.

Right now, they have to race a group of orcs to some ancient Imaskari ancient India ruins in Chessenta Hellenic Greece and hold it until backup arrives.

I just finished designing the half-orc Hawkguard that's going to pin them down for a while.

That's pretty much what it was billed as. they basically just stepped away from the fantasy genre so that they could flip the board as far as classes and magic were concerned. It'd be pretty easy to run a fantasy campaign in Starfinder.

The math on the back end is a bit easier to manage. Standardization of bonuses, less bookkeeping for magic users, and stuff like that. But yeah, its basically pathfinder 2.0, to the point that a lot of people are thinking that starfinder is just them testing the waters for an ACTUAL Pathfinder 2e.

So... how... do mounts work? Specifically mechanic drones with the mount option? Does the mount move AFTER your turn is completed, cause that would be pretty bullshit.

Someone said you could use a move action command your mount to take its move action on your turn, but I'm not seeing any actual rules for that anywhere.

I mean, the problem with 3.0 haste was that it let casters doublecast, so they ripped out the extra action properties of haste without adjusting the monster math, and the result is martials have to stand still or suck, and can't buy boots of haste to give themselves their mobility back.

This change is a loooooooong time coming and I'm so happy it's finally happened

Somewhere in Tier 3: Mystic, Technomancer
Low Tier 3/High Tier 4: Mechanic (drone), Soldier

What's the problem with Starfinder, the genre or the setting? You could totally try and convince us that we should get hyped for using the Starfinder rules for a Cyberpunk campaign, or heck even a near-future one!
>>
>>54739447
Mythic Haste does grant an extra Move.
I know, it's a far cry from just a 'Greater Haste' option, but you could use it anyway, and just add it as a regular spell at higher level or something.

The best thing i've been able to wangle out of most DMs is being able to move at half speed and full attacking, which gives haste back it's 3.0 function, while also reducing stand still or suck, and gives classes like monks an incentive to pump their movement speed

I think i worded that poorly, i mean that monks, who normally have their fast movement working against flurry of blows now actually become highly mobile full attackers, giving them a niche.

Using Mythic content scaled to normal PF or 3.5e content in general still boils down to "boy I sure hope my GM is smart/nice enough to do this", which is... Well, about as likely for most groups as backporting Starfinder Haste would be. Which is what is frustrating as shit. Most GM's WILL NOT consider this. Hell, I somehow think it'll get nerfed/errata'd by whiny PFS-tier faggotry.

Anyone else have trouble playing a paladin starting at low levels?

On top of the standard stuff that makes roleplaying a paladin hard, it seems to me that being a paladin should be a prestige class to work towards rather than something you start out as. I get that I could always start out as an inexperienced squire type, but I feel like that limits roleplaying opportunities even more.

Thoughts?

The Chosen One archetype is your friend, and goes a long way to showing off how a level 1 character could be a focus of their celestial patron. >>54740408
Honestly, it all depends on the character; but the thing that stands out the most to me is the realization that a 1st level PC ain't shit. They're better than the average chucklefuck on the street, but when compared to anything else, they're green as hell.

Most classes spell that out in the mechanics (Alchemists are chucking fire crackers, while Wizards have 2 spells before being tapped), but Paladin hides it in the fluff. Paladins are essentially holy warriors, foot soldiers for their god/ideal's army, thus I play them like a kid just out of basic training. They've got knowledge, they've got training, but no real idea of how those things interact with the real world. Your low level paladins are more likely to see the world purely in black and white, to make tactical miscalculations, to fail, and to chafe against their oaths. Part of their arc is learning to not just be Lawful and Good, but to be Lawful Good, to temper the iron justice of the law with warm mercy of good, or to apply discipline and purpose to controlling their emotions and urges.

If he's getting shit on OOC--and I mean like actually shit on, not just getting in on the joke--then you're all assholes and I hope the game falls apart. Because holy shit that poor bastard must have the patience of a saint.

And if he's taking damage, SO FUCKING WHAT. THAT IS WHAT CHARACTERS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO IN A GAME THAT FEATURES COMBAT.
>>

Let me see if I have this right. Take a 1st-level human technomancer with Dexterity 18 and Intelligence 14. Give them Longarm Proficiency and Weapon Focus (longarms) for feats. Buy them an azimuth laser rifle.

Four times per day, they can cast Supercharge Weapon as a standard action. They can then make a ranged attack with an attack bonus of +5 vs. EAC, dealing 1d8+4d6 (average 18.5) fire damage.

By 2nd-level, they gain another 1st-level slot from their spell progression and yet another 1st-level slot from Energize Spell. In other words, they can now cast Supercharge Weapon six times per day, with an attack bonus of +6 vs. EAC, still dealing 1d8+4d6 (average 18.5) fire damage.

Is this the case? If so, does that not make a technomancer terribly powerful at taking out enemies, considering that a soldier with an azimuth artillery laser deals only 1d10 damage with each shot? Does this not obsolete the technomancer's Empowered Weapon magic hack as well?

How strong should the family values of tieflings be? Should they treat their children as bastards or negligent manner or stick together in a "blood is thicker than water" way?
>>
>>54741396
"the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" is the original version of the "blood is thicker than water" phrase.

I figure tiefings would have pretty strong family value, sticking together because they can relate to each other.
>>
>>54741396
Let me just dig out Blood of Fiends real quick, and check to see what I can find.

But off the top of my head? Tieflings would place immense value on family, while also probably being prone to having broken homes all the fucking time, just as a matter of being enslaved, arrested, or the world driving you apart.

Your family are the only people who care about you. They're the ones you have to look out for, and that you rely on to look out for you...but you're probably going to end up leaving them behind, not even through any fault of your own. Chelish tieflings, who are probably mostly slaves, are going to feel this the hardest.

Take a feat for Weapon Specialization (longarms). You are down a feat compared to a soldier, but you are still gaining more spells.

Your Intelligence will remain middling, but that is fine; the technomancer spell list has more than enough DC-less spells for you to work with, letting you focus on buffs and noncombat utility.

If you would rather not go all-in on the investment, be an android for Intelligence 16 instead, and do not bother with longarms. Instead, take Weapon Focus (small arms) and simply start yourself with an azimuth laser pistol. This frees up your 3rd-level feat as well.

So long as you're not waving it about like a lunatic screaming "he who moves dies" through your bevor, sure. Armor takes time to remove, and a halberd is a bit unwieldy to strap across your back-they probably won't begrudge a man tired of tromping around in full kit a few drinks without changing his dress.

Is it just me, or is the solarian so badly designed that any solarian wants to ignore *both* solar armor and solar weapon?

The solarian is a Strength-based melee class locked into melee attacks with certain mandatory class features. That means a solarian needs heavy armor in order to avoid dying horribly in the front line. Solar armor is compatible with light armor, yet explicitly unusable with heavy armor (powered armor is a murky grey area that could use clarification). Thus, every solarian should be taking Heavy Armor Proficiency and ignoring solar armor.

The solar weapon is horrid. It deals only 1d6 + Strength modifier kinetic damage and targets KAC. Perhaps that might suffice at 1st-level, but by 2nd-level, a solarian wants to buy an ember flame doshko for 750 credits, letting them target EAC (often 1 to 3 points lower) and deal 1d8 + Strength modifier damage instead.

What in the world is going on here? The solarian is so terrible a class that it wants to ignore its choice of signature armor and signature weapon! Why?

Hey, so. I'm adding some low-key Backgrounds to my next campaign. These are mostly for getting my players interested in buying into the local culture and politics, but I also wanted each one to have a nice benefit and one drawback. These are meant to be partially social and partially mechanical. But I'm having some difficulty with a few, and was wondering if someone here could help me out?

What would be an interesting boon and drawback for someone with the "Foreigner" background? At best this can be like a bonus feat. At worst it still shouldn't cripple a PC's character.
>>

If you've never played before, I'd suggest using a Store Locator to find a Game Store near you that runs Pathfinder Society.

Society is a decent way to learn the game rules and mechanics in a regular setting. Most Society sessions/missions last 3-5 hours, so it's not a lot of time out of a schedule.
>>
>>54741848

Finding a group is easy-there's usually no shortage of them on sites like Roll20, or at local game stores. Still, playing with strangers has its risks, but coming off of WoD, that shouldn't be anything new to you.

>One of the LGSes in town has Pathfinder Society, according to the locator, but the RPG community there is very elitist and cliquish.

That's something that's fairly common to most RPG groups at an LGS. Society does kind of alleviate it a little, but it's still a thing to deal with. Best I could recommend is find out the start time and who's generally in charge, then contact them to meet ahead of time so y'all can talk and be introduced before the games actually start.

>>

>>
>>54741946

In that case, two to guard the stables, two to guard your quarters, two to patrol outside the building housing your quarters, and another half-dozen to serve as a second shift. Your belongings and horses are now as secure as your GM cares to let them be.
>>
>>54741998

By the time a solarian reaches 6th-level, they can probably afford a wrack devastation blade for 5,500 credits that deals 2d8 damage.

This is decidedly better than using a solar weapon with a solarian weapon crystal.

At no levels in the game does a solarian ever want to use solar armor or a solar weapon, unless it turns out that solar armor is compatible with powered armor.
>>
My biggest regret with playing with 3.P game mechanics is that it's really friggin hard to say to someone "get behind me!" and then block the aggressor's incoming attack with my sword, when compared to real life by RAW it's unbelievably easy for someone to just go around me and stab my protectee with me not being able to do anything other than maybe AOO.

I have a question. Say I wanted to allow commonplace firearms, and make them reasonably commonly seen due to Full plate being a thing. What kinds of rules should I I to properly match and make early fire-arms useful?

For some reason I feel a good place to start would be to have them target Flatfoot AC instead of Touch, but what else should they have? Perhaps better load times or something?
>>
>>54742250
Touch is enough, because touch scales *really* badly compared to normal AC.
Maybe just allow for them to be cheaper and easier to maintain.

It seems to me that a mechanic (hover drone) focusing on longarms is one of the game's most potent combatants, at least at the earlier levels.

Consider a 3rd-level human mechanic with Dexterity 20 from a personal upgrade, Improved Initiative, Longarm Proficiency, and Weapon Specialization (longarms). They have initiative +9, a ranged attack bonus of +7, and deal 1d8+3 damage with an azimuth laser rifle, costing a mere 425 credits. They can full attack for two attacks at +3 each.

They also have a flying hover drone with weapon mount ×2 (including the free weapon mount), weapon proficiency (Longarm Proficiency), Weapon Focus (longarms), and Weapon Specialization (longarms). They act on the same initiative count as the mechanic, they have a ranged attack bonus of +7, and they deal 1d8+3 damage with an azimuth laser rifle. They cannot full attack, but that is fine, because they are pumping out extra attacks.

A 3rd-level soldier would be hard-pressed to compete with such a mechanic's action economy advantage, even considering the opportunity cost the mechanic has placed into their build to wield longarms. Extra actions are no joke.
>>
>>54742269
Yeah, but the autist in me says that targeting Touch is stupid, since "bullet-proof" was a thing, and the point of a bullet is to fire fast and not to be easily seen coming as it tears down retards trying to charge your Pike and Shot formation. Logically, it would make more sense to target Flatfoot, while if any ranged Weapon should target Touch, it would be the Heavy Crossbow, and even then I sure as heck wouldn't

Plate armour could stop early bullets just fine. The pike is what brought back the dominance of infantry to the field. Plate armour coexisted with guns for centuries.
>>
>>54742330
Easy answer; make bulletproof an armor mod that you can apply to armor for a percentage of the cost. Say, 50%? And make it so that it applies when targeted by ranged touch attacks, such as rays, bullets, and similar things.
>>
The problem we're having here is that armor doesn't naturally contribute to your Deflection AC, which it absolutely did back in the day before rifled ammunition.

>>54742250

Load times are not that inaccurate. One of the reasons behind pike and shot was slow reloading opened windows for cavalry and infantry to assault. That said, that also puts guns on the disadvantage against bows and their ridiculous number of feats.
>>
>>54742353
Why should I make a mod what full plate and other heavy armor should already have as inherent? Seems kinda bassackwards to me. Plus it doesn't fix firearms and instead just makes them even more irrelevant

>>54742362
It is stupid, however one thing I could imagine as an actual armor mod to make it better would be to install Fluting, which could possibly give some kind of extra deflection bonus against Piercing/Slashing damage
>>
Hey, does anybody have the Starfinder archetypes page saved? I want to take a look at Phrenic Adept.

>>54742420
>Why should I make a mod what full plate and other heavy armor should already have as inherent?
Because a plate that can stop a blade won't necessarily stop a bullet. You need to design it properly for that - besides, the suggested armor mod includes shit like rays as well.
>>
>>54738948
I hope not since Dexterity is already an overpowered stat.
Not to mention the already high base damage rolls

Update and revision to my previous statement: I was misreading the table.

It turns out that there is an actual point to the solarian's solar weapon after all! ... At 6th-level and above.

At 1st-level, a solarian chooses solar weapon, but completely ignores it as they spend 240 credits on a tactical doshko. It is an unwieldy weapon, but at 1st-level, judging from First Contact, a melee character wants to try one-shotting enemies. Dealing 1d12 + Strength modifier + 1 (photon mode) damage is a good way to try to kill people instantly at 1st-level.

At 2nd-level, the solarian purchases an ember flame doshko. They go down to 1d8 damage, but they now target EAC, and they are no longer using an unwieldy weapon. They keep to this weapon until 5th-level.

Only at 6th-level does a solarian bother to switch to their actual solar weapon. They purchase a least graviton crystal for 2,900 credits for +1d3 damage and knockdown as a critical effect, putting them on par with a wrack devastation blade, and having saved 2,600 credits.

Fast forward to 10th-level. A solarian now has a 3d6 damage solar weapon, and they can purchase a lesser graviton crystal for 24,000 credits to go up to a total of 5d6 damage (average 17.5). Or, for a more economical 18,100 credits, they can use an ultrathin curve blade for 3d10 damage (average 16.5), a mere 1 damage less.

In other words, the solar weapon is a dead class feature until 6th-level, and then it flips back and forth between "useful" and "dead." This is not good design.

Meanwhile, solar armor is still utterly useless unless it can work with powered armor.
>>
What exactly is the point of the soldier (armor storm)'s 1st-level class feature, Hammer Fist? It effectively makes you deal 1d4+2 damage while wearing heavy armor and making unarmed attacks.

750 credits affords a soldier an ember flame doshko that deals 1d8 damage and, more importantly, targets EAC, which is usually 1 to 3 points lower than KAC.

I cannot see Hammer Fist possibly vindicating itself compared to, say, Blitz's Rapid Response for +4 initiative and +10 land speed.
>>
>>54742623
Hammer Fist is useful because it means you don't have to drop your ranged weapon if you want to knee someone in the stomach, or clock them in the jaw. Having attack options when you can't draw another weapon and your hands are occupied is a situation that comes up a surprising amount. It's not meant to be great; it's meant to be a fallback when you're screwed.

I can understand Hammer Fist being intended as a backup weapon for predominantly ranged characters, but... at 5th-level, a soldier with Armor Storm is supposed to hop into powered armor, which already comes with a built-in weapon (which will outdamage Hammer Fist at 5th-level), so what gives?

Here is a neat little tactic with an operative. An operative's trick attack flat-foots the target if successful. A flat-footed creature cannot take reactions. Attacks of opportunity are reactions.

I have called the operative "space John Wick" previously, but this seals it: an operative can avoid an attack of opportunity for making a ranged attack while threatened this way. There is a chance it might fail, and it obviously will not work when threatened by multiple opponents, but it could very well be handy in a pinch.
>>
>>54742789
By Halberdier, do you mean someone using a Halberd specifically, or just someone using a polearm with reach?
If the latter, then it might be worth getting another 2hand weapon without reach and buckler as a backup. If the former, then some kind of Bludgeoning Weapon to cover damage types might be good

>tfw being a actually good character puts you at odds with the party more often than the groups evil character.

No I'm not just talking from a lawful stupid paladin perspective. I'm referring to stuff like not wanting to break into a not villainous nobles mansion and stealing a Mc'Guffin instead of just doing a favor for him and getting the Mc'Guffin that way. My group is constantly trying to fuck over and swindle NPC's that are genuinely not being dicks. Instead of paying for health potions they'd rather try and steal/take the health pots. Then they think the DM is being unreasonable when NPC's take action to try and get even.
