The various kata are needed to focus your powers, yes. It's possible to bend without them, but not to get any major effects out of it. Mostly it's just unconscious little links between your emotional state and the nearby elements. An angry firebender might cause nearby flames to flare up, for example. That said, it's possible to simplify your moves so they can be done with the bare minimum of movements, twitching your hands or even face and getting a result. Also, firebending and airbending, being related to breath, can be done by inhaling and exhaling.

Bending is accompanied by martial arts moves most of the time. It's not a 'dance', in fact, movement is generally 1 to 1 or nearly so with the element's movement, it's not so painfully elaborate as in the movie. And as was said, master benders don't need those movements at all.

Exalted has these things called Elemental Poles, which are basically the lynchpin for their respective element in all of Creation. The closer you get to one, the more the element overtakes the world around you. Everything near the Pole of Fire is blazing hot and/or on fire, the area near the Pole of Wood is basically just a maelstrom of plantlife, you get the idea. There's some more nuance (particularly in regards to practical uses for one) but that's the basic of it.

I'm also thinking a few more reasonable/smaller scenarios, which would get you a pet Akuma or your Lunar Mate free. Not sure what else to do with those...

Anyway, they'll most be some sort of task/challenge to complete, a bit more elaborate than the drawbacks.

On my last run through I took the Rogue Gallery Drawback to spice things up a bit. Doesn't everybody?

I went in and pretended to be a knock-off Iron Man using Kamen Rider tech. Everybody ended up calling me Toybox, which I despised as a superhero name but it was incredibly appropriate. My Companions all went in as knock-off heroes of one kind or another. We were a group of grey Heroes, working with Batman but not quite under his direct control.

Of course, a decade is a long time to put up with an almost night crime fighting gig, even if we all did take turns. Between the new villains and the old there was plenty of work to go around.

In the end, I got tired of Batman's crap code of ethics. He let The Killing Joke happen because he was more suspicious of why I was giving him that kind of information than actually preventing the crime. All he did was get to show up in the aftermath.

So, year 9, we started snapping villains over our knees. Marceline, Lapis, and Rip had all retired from crime fighting by that point due to fatigue, but they came back for this. New villains, old villains, we finished them all off. Gotham was all but anarchy in the aftermath due to the power vacuum, but the more destructive were finished off.

And then Batman tried to pull the whole, "You're no better than them!" speech on me. So I showed him a video of Nightwing beating the Joker to death. He was horrified. He claimed I had destroyed everything he had worked for. On and on he ranted.

So I threw the body count at him. I had tallied up exactly how many innocent people Batman had traded away to keep playing this sick little game of his with the villains of Gotham. The figure was not as high as I would have expected, but it was still staggering when you saw it all at once.

I left him standing there on the rooftop. It started raining. We were gone the next day. I only regret waiting as long as I did to act.

I have not had good experiences with Gods. Whether it was acting on 'community service' for the Greek Gods, who were absurdly petty and vain...being a cat's paw for the Goddess of Balance in Dragonlance, or just the entirety of my ongoing vendetta with YHVH. It's not even just 'Gods' exactly - I have a very, VERY strong hatred of things that abuse their power on those who have no chance of fighting back. It's why I'm usually a champion of the underdog in certain worlds, where I make my opinion to said Gods VERY clear.

But then...there are things like Eternity and the Living Tribunal, who are more like living mechanisms who simply try to perform their function. And stranger still, completely benevolent entities who actively want the best for the world, like The Master of Actraiser.

Oh, I see. I've seen this concept but, not being into the fighting game community, was unaware there was a dedicated term for it. Well, I think God Hand has some stuff for move canceling. Majikoi has Hyper Armor in the Drop In tree for avoiding flinch and chip damage. /coco/'s Bizarre Adventure has stuff for messing with frames of animation, sort of similar. Fair, admittedly my main issue stems from their lack of meaningful purpose to the story. They seem to exist solely for younger audience to identify with and anything else they do could be done by one of the transformers. I think I would have liked actually adults for them to work along but given how they handled the kids the adult humans prolly wouldn't be much better.

Yes, I have an option for importing altforms.

There are a few Kaiju powers that will allow you to have minions. One is based off of Cloverfield's parasites/Shin Godzilla's tail monsters, another will let you reproduce aesexually to create younger versions of your Kaiju form while a third will allow your Kaiju form to be a swarm of smaller monsters/become a swarm. In addition there may be stuff that allow you to grow/mutate others, either as a perk or item.
