Do you allow your players to have follower NPCs?

Wondering, because I want to play a Rigger with a semi-truck that has a bunch of not!Warboys.
>>
Having trouble digging up some fluff. Which of the NAN states refuse to recognize corporate extraterritoriality? Especially interested in how the PCC does it, since they're basically a corp anyway. Would they recognize it for others?
>>
>>53918038
That is a really bad idea, combat gets slowed down enough with matrix shenanigans, adding in another half-dozen initiatives to track would strain the system, the other players, and your GM's patience.
>>
>MBW

>Researchers have been struggling with it for decades and still haven’t perfected it, but it’s at least closer to being usable today than ever before.

>Any user under an active system will be affected by constant small twitches and tremors due to the complex interactions of the system, which vanish as soon as the system engages actual movement, returning whenever they are once again still.

Anything you can do that involves movement will work just fine under MBW. It's staying still becomes twitchy.
>>
>>53918328
So anyone with nervous tics or that can't sit still is probably concealing that they have MBW active?

Teeeeechnically you can make it work, I've got the files somewhere. The problem is that once you move to career mode the attributes don't split up properly; I really wanted Chummer to be able to manage that split properly and automagically recalculate all your limits and skill pools and such, but I couldn't get it to notify about the updates properly and got annoyed at it.

do you know much about GCA or GCS. I know that's not shadowrun, unless you are using GURPS 4e to run a game in the shadowrun setting, but I figured asking someone who is the lead developer of a character program about other character programs may be a good idea.
>>
>>53917229

Thank you to the anon who has been helping me rebuilt my character.

I have a question though.

Why did you include the "Flight skill" on the character build examples you gave me (the BP one is posted here but the karmagen one was it too)

The flight skill is on page 292 of the sr4 20th anniversary core book and says

>Flight:

>Critters capable of flight may possess a special Flight skill.
This skill measures how well the creature can fly and is used the same
way as the Running or Swimming skills are used for movement.

Is this supposed to be for piloting flight capable drones?

Can we talk about 5e Matrix defense for non-hackers? In 4e I used to buy an agent to run on my commlink to prevent being casually rolled by script kiddies. Am I right in reading that agents only work on decks now? Is there an analogous strategy I should be using?

5e's editing is known to be awful. If you read German, the German 5e books are actually properly edited, otherwise your only choices are forcing your way through the book or going back to an older version. Or using the fluff in a different system.

>>53920379
Anarchy's shit. You're much better off using the rules from something like Blades in the Dark or The Sprawl or Technoir if you want a rules-light SR.
>>
>>53920373
For SR5, the superbook in the pastebin is a better organized, no bullshit version of the rules. Once you've read that you can use the rules summary sheets and cheat sheets to get a better idea on specific mechanics. Then, once you know what you're looking for you can go find it in the core book.

Its going to be obtuse. You're going to have to GM. That means you'll need to read everything. The upside is that your players can scrape by reading the ~1/3 relevant to their character.
>>
>>53921578
Is the super book just core, or does it have any supplement stuff jammed in there?
>>
>>53921578
Wait wheres the superbook?

So apparently the Chilean government has a massive problem with Cartels wielding a vast array of Asian weaponry according to this document a Chilean internet friend of mine has linked:
http://www.dgmn.cl/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Cartilla%20de%20Implementos%202014.pdf
After reading over the contents, you may notice that some of these are listed as 'legendary swords,' to which I suggest adding to your game an adventure set in South America based around the local cartels importing legendary Asian swords to parade them around as bling and use for dumb cartel shit. Imagine a Chilean in a tank top and jeans cutting through dudes with a magic chinese straightsword, one-handed with zero technique, and there's four more guys like him coming along, also their boss ate a red toad that gave him super strength.

Just a thought.

I want to pull a Liquid Ocelot on my players in an upcoming run. If you're not familiar with what that is, basically, a villain gets killed, but one of their body parts gets grafted onto somebody else, and then that person seems to get "possessed" by the dead villain. I want to leave it open, so I'm not looking to establish a definite explanation for this, but what could be some plausible explanations for the personality of the dead villain manifesting through the grafted body part, either magical or technological?

Turn wireless off and pay for a hardware expert to remove the functionality altogether. If you want to have a guncam and hud, use a wire; you don't need your gun to check your twitter feeds.
>>
>>53914335
>And Wired Reflexes is cheaper, less intrusive and actually not so experimental as Move-BY-Wire

MBW came long before Wired Reflexes. It is way more expensive and intrusive, but in the 2050's it was way more common than it is now, because WR was still in it's infancy. A government bureaucracy that continues to use the more expensive and damaging option because the implantation procedures aren't up for committee review for another 8 years is entirely possible.
>>
>>53921160
Data Trails has what you need to run an Agent on your commlink. Just gotta mod it to use a module like >>53921257 said, then slap Virtual Machine into it to run the Agent plus one other program of your choice, like Armor.

>>
>>53926789
There are all kinds of reasons to hit a Triad warehouse that don't involve doing it for a rival crime family.
>>
>>53926419
Stash 'em in a safehouse "for their protection", hose 'em off, dress 'em up, tell them you're arranging for a coyote to get them out of the city and far away from their Triad kidnappers. Then get your fixer contact to put the word out that you've recovered the Triad's "lost assets" from a pack of scumbag do-gooders that won't be seeing the light of day again, and you're wondering if there's a finder's fee for the return of these slags the Triad's paying. Nothing wrong with getting a payday and getting in good with a Triad for doing them a service. Alternatively, if the Triad's too cheap to not be offering a finder's fee on their little birds, find a different buyer that'll want 'em. Individual rate or bulk, makes no difference really, it'll be nuyen you didn't have yesterday.

>>
>>53921424
As a pure PhysAd, you'll want to have high agility (5+), 6 in Longarms with a Sniper Rifles specialization. Then for Adept Powers, take Improved Reflexes 2 or 3, Enhanced Accuracy (Longarms), and Improved Ability (Longarms). Everything else you do in terms of murder or sub specializations is up to you.

High agility and reaction makes becoming a Wheelman or a Physical Infiltrator easy, and having such a high Longarms dice pool means you're also a shotgun and lever action savant, which is important because all the best Sniper Rifles are highly illegal. For other Adept Powers, Combat Sense, Nimble Fingers, and Rapid Draw are all common high value powers. I'm also a fan of linguistics.
>>
>>53926789
But fucking with the Underworld is awesome, because then it opens up the opportunity for non-stop warfare. It isn't a Shadowrun campaign until you have to exterminate the leadership caste of a whole organized crime syndicate.
>>
>>53925541
Hmmm pure RAW ?
Dedicated Spellslinger counts against the limit of spells known at character creation
1) The spells you get are free of karma but would still count as spells you know
2) In its description it does not state that the limit is ignored
3) It feels like a quality to help Aspect Magicians get equal number of spells as mages but free them some karma not one to give mages even more spells
>>
I'm currently building a face/decker for my next character, and got to thinking...what are some legitimate reasons someone might give you a mark on their device? I'm thinking of posing as some sort of superior and asking wageslaves for marks on their devices to get the files I need, rather than hacking them and getting OS. Plus, that also means I can listen in on their conversations for hours after I leave.
>>
>>53925541
By RAW no, since the quality doesn't say the spells provided by Spellslinger can exceed the limit of MAGx2. Perhaps make it an houserules option like "Qualities that provide spells can exceed the maximum spell limit at character creation".
>>
>>53929394
>Listen, in a meeting right now and I need the quarterly report ASAP, could you toss me a mark on the data server so I can snag it?
>Hey this is IT, we're doing routine software updates, and it looks like your workstation didn't update correctly, I need to take a quick look at it though remote access.

>>53929394
If you're conning people into giving you marks, you don't need to be a decker at all.
>>
>>53929850
You're not always going to be able to con someone into giving you marks though, so being able to hack your way in while also being a smooth talker opens a lot of new avenues for getting access you otherwise wouldn't have.

Let's say that I'm a stupid idiot that likes the setting but kinda hates the system.

If I wanted to homebrew the shit out of it to make a rules-light version (nothing too narrative, just a bit faster on the rolls and a bit looser with the details), would you start from SR4 or SR5? Which glaring issues would you deal with, first?

>>
>>53932889
SR 4 and 5 are pretty close, I'd say the distinction is arbitrary for your purposes.

The hardest issue you're going to have is the matrix. It should be intricate enough to require a specialist (meaning more than one skill to do), while not being its own game within a game. Maybe find a way to reduce the 20+ matrix actions to 6 or so?

Streamlining combat would be nice too, so each attack doesn't require 3 rolls (attack, dodge, soak)

Idea: to speed up combat, what if we combined dodge and soak? That's how most systems do it. Defense test could be reaction, body, and armor or something.
>>
>>53936014
What, just like add them together? Because that means any defense test would be at least 14 dice. I'm not sure that simplifies things.
>>
>>53936014
I'd automate soak tests. Your (BOD + Armor)/3 is your "DR". When you soak you just subtract your DR from the (Base Damage + Net Hits).

AP in kind reduces DR by (AP/3).

You'll be able to reduce the math by creating a couple of simple tables listing Soak Pools and AP and their simplified values and handing them out at your table.

In hindsight its not much simpler, but it's one less roll.

The issue is that people exaggerate the state of MBW. Even 3e Cybertechnology only says this much, and it's supposed to be improved since then. Yet here we are trying to make out that it's way worse.

>The system lets you move with unnatural smoothness. Move-by-wire makes someone with mere balance augmentation look spastic. You can spot the joker with move-by-wire a mile off. There's another giveaway too, which I suspect will disappear as they perfect the technology. Every once in a while the person with move-by-wire develops a slight tremor in one muscle group. It's not as obvious as a twitch or spasm, but you can see it if you're looking for it. As far as I know, the tremor only hits when the muscle group is at rest. If it's in motion, everything is fine. I figure it has something to do with built-in errors when the system is compensating for the seizure, but don't quote me on that.

Does anyone else think that cyberzombies existing sort of diminishes the punch of both magic and technology existing in the setting?
I would much prefer if sure, cyberzombies exist, but they're not the be-all end-all of supersoldier attempts. Where's the otherwise normal guys that had 100 dudes sacrificed into them? Where's the unstoppable robots?
Apparently it all ends in a big cyberzombie anticlimax.
>>
>>53938496
>Where's the otherwise normal guys that had 100 dudes sacrificed into them.

Aztlan.

>Where's the unstoppable robots

In open warfare. The avoidance of which is the reason Shadowrunning exists.

There's nothing to stop you from running a game dealing with either, but they two concepts are usually found in situations that are far outside the purview of a shadowrunner.
>>
>>53938604
I feel like shadowrunners would run into them at least as often as cyberzombies. I mean, you find them in the same type of scenarios.

And a killer robot is either going to shrug off everything short of multiple anti-vehicle rockets, or get hacked by the decker.

Cyberzombies are the only relatively 'fair' threat for a runner team due to how the game is constructed.

But hey, you wanna toss your runners against an AI tank with an automatic assault cannon, missile pods, and point defense lasers who am I to tell you not to?

>>
>>53938793
Cyberzombies can't hack or use psi powers though.
>>
>>53936014
I hate systems that do that simply because it makes a really fast dodgy dude and a really thicc tanky dude mechanically the same.
Currently magdumping a dodgy guy with 8P will take him down but no matter how much you spray the troll tank he won't feel a thing.
Alternatively, the dodgy guy has a high chance of dodging sniper fire but the tank doesn't, and will most likely take damage from it.
DIfferences of approach when dealing with different enemies is more important than removing one roll (that most people memorize within a session anyway)

Thing is, a MBW 2 system cuts you out of 4 Essence and lowers your social limit by 2, effectively lowering it by 3 with the essence loss. Adding in that streetsams usually arent super charasmatic a decent MBW setup can cripple your social limit down to 1 or 2. It's a pretty significant impact for most cybered up runners. Sure you can fix some of it with a nice suit but in your day clothes good luck.

A great example for a wartime heist is from the short Halo story "Dirt", in which a squad of marines find out by dumb luck that one of the vaults of a bank in the city they are fighting in never had it's vault emptied, and it had tons of gold inside. The marines are moving to retreat from the city and the squad bribe a pelican pilot to help them in the heist. Once they actually get in the vault they find out a group of a dozen civilians had locked themselves inside and had survived the battle above. Conflict breaks out as the squad realizes the pelican can't hold both them, the civilians, and the gold, to make matters worse they only have time for one trip.

Well chummers, it seems that my runners are planning on carrying out a VIP recovery run with the help of some Personafix BTLs. Basically they've got to break into a corp facility and extract several targets to fulfill their contract, but they don't want to deal with wageslaves that might give them some trouble. So they want to go in, and slot all of these VIPs with Personafixes that will make them compliant and passive. I'd be more willing to let them get away with doing this to one person, but since they're planning on doing this to each of their targets, I want to know some possible complications I could throw at them that could make it harder for them to pull this off. How might I accomplish this?

Not every target has a datajack (or equivalent), hence they have to be given a comlink with a hot-sim module to run the BTL. Security becomes aware of the trick and attempts to hack the comlinks on top of stopping them physically.
>>
>>53939831
Sure, it hits your social limit, but that doesn't mean you "act like a spastic".

>The system lets you move with unnatural smoothness.

>Move-by-wire makes someone with mere balance augmentation look spastic.

>You can spot the joker with move-by-wire a mile off.

That and slight tremors when you sit still. So you don't want to sit still. Then you're back to moving unnaturally smoothly. That's enough to be cutting into your social limit.

The real problem of cutting into your social limit is that it hits the socially and charismatically undeveloped characters hard. If they get or have average charisma and social skills, it becomes a minor setback rather than anything significant.

Lets play a game /srg/
Post the WORST rule you know of in the books.
My submission:
When a character attempts to influence someone using another language, her persuasive ability is limited by her ability to convey ideas and concepts in that language. To reflect this, whenever a character uses a Charisma-linked Social skill to interact with another character
in a non-native tongue, the Social skill dice used may not exceed the character’s Language skill rating.
>>
>>53944534
That doesn't seem bad
Having Negotiation 6 doesn't matter if you speak the language at a broken level.

worse:
When a grenade detonates in a confined space, such as
a hallway or room, the gamemaster must first determine
whether any barriers (usually walls) stood firm against
the explosion. Consult the Destroying Barriers rules (p.
197). If the walls or doors hold up, the blast is channeled.
Otherwise, determine blast effects normally.
If the walls hold, the shock wave reflects off of them,
continuing back in the direction from which it came. If
this rebounding shock wave maintains enough Dam-
age Value to reach a character, that character is subject
to the appropriate blast effect. If the character is struck
a second time by the shock wave (once as it headed
out and again as it rebounded), the Damage Value of
the blast is equal to the combined Damage Value of the
two waves.
Theoretically, a detonating explosive’s blast could re-
bound repeatedly off each of the six surfaces in a small,
well-built room, raising the effective Damage Value of the
blast to a value far higher than the original damage of the
grenade. This is known as the “chunky salsa effect.”
>>
>>53944588
It fuckin guts faces anon, you need /20/ in a non native language skill to bring your wits to bare fully as written.
You know who has 20 in a language skill?
Nobody.
>>
>>53920310
So is this a custom cover or did someone actually bother rewriting the whole thing ?
>>
>>53944615
Social skill dice, not total pool. So you only need the language equal to your best social skill.

This does mean that as written, you can try negotiation in a language that you don't speak, and as a good face do about as well as an average person would.
>>
>>53944588
Blasts in enclosed spaces isn't so bad. Either the area is big enough that grenade power falls off fairly rapidly, or it's small enough that whatever's in there gets gibbed.

What's real bad is when you combine enclosed blasts and damage to barriers. Especially in 5e (and maybe 4e, I cant remember), where you have to roll for damage to the barrier.
>>
>>53944667
So the intent is that you lose say, 6 points of skill but keep your 8 Cha and 3 pheromones?
That's actually not so bad if so.
>>
>>53944678
Yes. And linguasofts are easy to get, too.
>>
>>53944678
If you got Cha 8 and 3 pheromones, yeah. Of course, you're probably not going to do anything really complex, but sometimes you don't need complex.

Sometimes you just need a button pressed or some minor charity.
>>
>>53944615
Sorry mate, you're an idiot.

>You can’t add more dice from your Social skill than you have in the language you (attempt to) speak.

>So if Easy Sal knows he can squeeze a few more nuyen out of Mr. Brackhaus if he can communicate clearly with the man, and Sal’s Negotiation is 6 but his German is only 3, Sal can only use 3 skill dice to worm more money out of the man.

Only applies to dice from skill ranks, and you're almost never going to have a dice pool higher than 6.

If you're retardedly worried about losing dice by not having the correct language(s) at high enough ranks, take the Linguist positive quality, which adds +1 die to all language skill tests, and doubles the received skill ranks for bought skill ranks during chargen.
>>
>>53944668
>>53944588
Speaking of enclosed blasts, you increase the damage each time the shockwave reaches the point, yes? Wouldn't that mean that, due to geometry, blasts in cylindrical areas like sewer pipes are ridiculously deadly?

It's not clear RAW.

From the forums, Drake Noble said,
>As for repairing matrix damage - implanted devices that need repairs (or upgrades) like a commlink or a cyberdeck are actually (according to Shadowrun back when they actually told or showed you this stuff clearly enough - so SR1 & 2) installed on a "plate" attached to the outside of, or replacing a section of, the skull... which means the parts that need repairs to clear up matrix damage are actually close to the skin.

I'd let someone repair it with Hardware as normal, but if they wanted to replace it I'd say it requires surgery, just like replacing any other cyberware with a different model - you've got to redo all the connections, it's not plug & play between a Samsung and a Fairlight.

The result is Catalyst Game Labs' masterpiece of clusterfuckery: Shadowrun 5E.

If you do a google search for "Shadowrun Embezzlement" you'll get a bunch of forum threads and reports on it. The upshot is that a lot of the old writers and freelancers left, people from the community (like Bull) were recruited or promoted to fill their place, people like Jason Hardy (who defended Coleman) were promoted to their level of incompetence, and CGL lost the licenses to Cthulhutech and Eclipse Phase, but maintained Shadowrun and BattleTech.

My favourite story is that, as manpower dwindled, one of the remaining editors resorted to bringing in his wife after hours to pack boxes of books to ship out. There's lots of hearsay about what happened, so I don't have confirmation of it, but it's a good story.
>>
Am I better off carrying fragmentation or high explosive grenades, if I don't always know who I'll be up against?
>>
>>53951110
Frag. Will neutralize anybody who isn't highly armored and you can safely chuck it at your tank/cars if they're surrounded. High explosive is for armor only, really.
>>
>>53951110
You're better off carrying flashbangs and gas grenades. They are both very dangerous, and you can use them fairly safely (flashbangs only cover a flat 10 meters, and gas grenades can be resisted with chemseals).

>>53951137
Frag grenades have a fuckhueg radius, though, so it's really easy to salsa things you want unsalsa-ed.
>>
Why do I never see anyone use flashpacks?
They are really good, especially against lower level security forces.
Enemy mooks take a -4 to any attack action while being within viewing distance, with your allies only taking -2 (-1 if they have flare protection, 0 if it's in something that takes up essence).
>>
>>53951231
It's just why would I throw a flashpack when I could throw a flash grenade?
>>
>>53951110
HE is good solo, but Frags are the king of pure absolute damage in pairs.

Depends on what you're using. If you have the semiauto grenade launcher, then bring frags, because you'll be dealing 36 damage with -1 AP on a 3 round burst.
>>
>>53951263
Because AFAIK flash grenades are one use only, while flash packs are rechargeable
>>
>>53951288
And you can fire at the flashpack and destroy it
Or throw grenade of your own and destroy it + deal damage
Damage inflicts lasting penalties and can take out targets while the flashpack would last for around a second before someone shooting it down.
>>
>>53951110

You're better off carrying white phosphorous grenades in case spirits show up.
>>
>>53951263

Nothing's stopping you just hanging the flashpak on your plate carrier or something. Really it's like having a strobe tactical light.
>>
>>53951591
>>53951447
There's actually a riot shield that has a built in flash-pak.
Also, shooting a stobe light is difficult considering
A) There are people shooting at you
B) It's a strobe light and by nature is difficult to look at
>>
>>53951447
>And you can fire at the flashpack and destroy it
which I imagine being difficult due to a) it being small, b) you being blinded and c) it being in the cone of light

>Or throw grenade of your own and destroy it + deal damage
What?
Okay, chummer, just to be sure
>you are in a fight with me
>I throw a flashpack to you, it should land pretty close
>it activates, giving a -4 penalty on all tests
>you then throw a grenade to it
>next to you

Did I understand correctly?
>>
>>53951627
it is also umoving object that gets no defense tes so unless there is Ares FlashShield involved you need a single hit on a test to hit it.
>>53951637
Just to be sure how close?
Next to my feet? Than yeah grenades would be stupid. Just walk 1 meter forwards, flashpack is behind me and no penalty
5 meters infront of me? Throw grenade additional 5 meters forward and done no damage for me/
>>
>>53939989
I'd ditch the Skull for Alphaware Bonelacing and please get the Datajack in Alpha-Quality.
You want to save as much essence as possible.

Also talk to your GM to about using the german rules for the Skilljack.
In krautistan, its only 0,1 Essence regardless of its rating and only costs a thousand Nazishekels per Rating.
If you want to look it up, the Book is in the "auf deutsch" Folder in the pastebin, the ware is called "Talentbuchse".
>>
>>53952186
Are Nazishekels the official currency in 2070 Germany? What's the Nuyen conversion rate?
>>
>>53952038
>5 meters forward and done no damage for me
?
What kind of grenade are you thinking of?
Because a frag grenade is 18(f), -1/m. Meaning that in 5 m distance you still get 12(f) damage from it
and a HE grenade still hurts you with 6, -2 AP

And yeah, within 1 to 5 meters should be normal, more likely 3 m

>so unless there is Ares FlashShield involved you need a single hit on a test to hit it.
I was pretty sure that hitting small objects increase the threshold/reduce the dicepool unless you use Image Magnification, but I can't find that rule right now
So yeah, I'd argue that shooting a small flash-pak while being blinded requires more than just one hit
But so would shooting a grenade while in flight

>>
>>53952357
>additional 5 meters
Meaning 5 meters away from the flashpack or 10 meters total away from me
Size modifiers are on page 108 of Run&Gun as an optional rule
Firing a Weapon is an opposed test so there is no threshold. You may give as much penalties as you want but a single hit is all you need to hit unmoving stationary target.
>but firing at the light
Already in use with the -4/2/1 penalty of the flashpack itself.
The point still stands. There are multiple ways to negate or remove the penalty while with grenades is just one:soak the damage(well and the Run for Your Life or Duck for Cover Interupt)
Taking people out > Mildly inconvenience them
