What sets were used? As they are actually good looking and aren't squatting
Hey WIP reposting these dudes. Let me know what you think, still pretty new to this painting thing and hoping to get better. Thoughts on scheme and other criticisim. 1/2ignore the carnifex talons on the warriors, built them fucking years ago when i had no idea what i was doing but thought it looked cool
I was going to post the Rogue Trader era guide to painting Space Marines, but my internet is too slow and my captcha kept timing out before it actually uploaded.
Someone else post it please?

>>53834587
I thought Minotaurs only employed the very best stuff. Why are they still using manlet marines? :^)
>>53834625
I used deathwatch heads, the red scorpion librarian and his lads' chests and shoulders.

I consider it to be about 95% done. The only big thing is some clean up here and there.
Maybe some edge highligthing of the corners with a different colour.

I want to try and put some lady guardsmen (guardswomen?) In my army.
Let's make this clear. I'm not changing the armor. I'm not changing the frame. No boob plate, no hourglass figure. They're women who are soldiers, not pinup models.
That also means they need to be wearing their helmets, which every sculptor and their mom seems to have ignored. Where can I get some proper fe.ale trooper who aren't out of fucking uniform?
Sergeants notwithstanding, obviously.
Got a pot with the paint mostly dry. Anyway to save it?
>>53836000
>That also means they need to be wearing their helmets, which every sculptor and their mom seems to have ignored. Where can I get some proper fe.ale trooper who aren't out of fucking uniform?
Victoria miniatures.
There are a few other conversion kits with alternate torsos and heads, but those mostly look mediocre at best.
The victoria stuff is good because even in full gear it's clear that they are women due to their size and figure.
>>53836000
Victoria Miniatures, bruh.
Female Guard by a female modeler. Lady arms and lady heads, and optional lady torsos if you want smaller ones (with more of a 2E Cadian look)
>>53834635
Teal and Orange, it just works (look it up on Google, it is basically everywhere). Nice scheme anyway, they are looking great.

I started with basecoat of blue, green and skintones, picked up weapons with brown and stippled orange (for rust), and black/grey/blue on clothes. Then I went with all kinds of washes, which I mixed already on model - let's say i washed one with reikland, stippled red in when it was still wet etc.
On weapons and cloth it was just coat of agrax.
Any advice for painting Black Templars, anons?

So I asked a WIP aon how to paint my skelly standard. And he said something about the banner of the enemy. I choose to stick to my undead army colours red and black but add a currupted griffon to it.
This is the result.
Opinions?
>>53837238
looks really well painted.
I feel like the griffon could have been about twice as big as it is though.
Feels like the banner is a bit empty now.
Maybe you can add a scroll over/under it and add an army motto?
>>53834635

Painting black/white is a big topic too, but it somewhat depends on what you are going for in terms of style and tone.

Dey don't wants ta end up wiv da Steel Teef!
Brothers! I must beseech you; I attempted to recreate the shit in pic related with PVA glue today so I might be able to provide more information for others, but I ran into some issues. I put it in a reasonably thick line on a porcelain plate since I don't have a tile lying around to use and put it in for just under a minute, since I had absolutely no idea how long it aught to be in for. Decided a minute was a good place to start. My results were a hideous smell, lots of bubbling, and a thin layer of sludge that was once PVA glue. So nothing like the results in the picture.
I'm sure I did something wrong, and that's why I'm posting. Can any other Anons out there with some spare time try this stuff to see if they get it right? So far we know keeping it in for a minute just turns it to sludge and heavily distorts the shape, not to mention it clings to the surface it's on. Maybe it needed more time to sit out, but it looked fubar when I pulled it out.If anyone makes any attempts, use a smooth surface you don't care about; it's a bitch to clean, so unless you want to be scraping shit off your tile/plate/whatever, go with something you can risk.

>>53838517
check out the AoS range for lizardmen models which you could convert!
>>53837238
I was that anon.
And if you really want to frighten the enemy the flash needs be a bit tainted as well, like washed and corrupted as if the flag doesn't mean anything just that the skelly carries it around even after its death simply because it did in life.
I once annoyed a player with my flags that i had a flag more and more washed out cause he couldn't beat my skellies after each match. When he finally beat me one time i gave him the flag, best game ever.
Got a second one of these on my desk to be converted.
Does anyone have sources to get toadstools and vines for forest bases?
>>53836000
I'd grab a few Victoria heads, with and without hair, and fit Cadian helmets over them. You may have to trim a few hair buns so bald works best.
>>53839136
some orcs and goblins kits came iwth taodstools, as does the AoS scenic base elements.
You can make them easily with a blob of greensuff on the head of a pen/some plastic rod.
Vine? army painter do poison ivy, But some fibruous gardening sting flocked would do the job. Maybe check out massive voodoo, those guys do alot of jungle style bases.
>>53838254
I tried it with wood glue and it worked on high power for maybe 45 seconds. Basically it just dries it out quickly so the longer it was in there the more wrinkled it got but also the more baked to the plate it got. I didn't end up using it because it looked a bit shit desu and it was an absolute nightmare to get off the plate had to soak it in white spirit to soften it.
So why did Forge World stop producing etched brass for Minotaurs?
Anyone know where I can get some?
>>53839523
What, they stopped those too?
Now we have no brass etch and no transfers.
>>53839626
I mean at least there's still the shoulder pads but still.
Ok guys it's the Black Templars guy. Is it cheating to prime them black and just paint the shoulders and details?
Is priming and basecoating spray the same thing? I do brush painting except for the spray primer.
>>53839686
Yeah, but nothing to put on my tanks, Dreadnoughts or Terminators.
Guess my Minotaurs will get a break in time for 8th edition. Guess I'll just focus on getting my Tyranids ready.
Speaking of Tyranids, with my Tyranids painted in this scheme, what colour would look good on the wing membranes of my Gargoyles and Flyrant?
So I just finished my first ever squad
They turned out better than I thought they would but I'm not satisfied
anyone got tips?
>>53839861
They look great.
The boots and fabrics could use another highlight but I say it looks good enough already.
Some tufts of dry grass would look good on his base.
>>53839892
some of the squad already has tufts
I was trying to have variation on the bases
but thanks!
>>53839904
The poses and positioning of the bases look slightly off, did you glue them on after putting texture on the bases?
Other than that they look really cool.
>>53839904
>>53839929
Thanks!
Yeah, I know what you mean
I was told that I should wire them on the base but when I finished doing it, they were all canted
Next time i'm gluing them after I finish painting and then apply the texture
>>53839734
Here's the thing about cheating with miniature painting. It's not a big deal and if your miniatures look better when you cheat rather than when you don't then you should cheat.
Also priming is different from base coating but if you prime in the base coat color then it doesn't make a lick of difference
>>53839523

>>53840496
I like this. simple, classic, and well-executed
>>53839734
priming, undercoating and spray basecoating are -in miniature painting- -usually- the same thing.
It's not cheating but it's boring as fuck. If you're being lazy just spray grey and do the triple black wash.
>>53839852
>Speaking of Tyranids, with my Tyranids painted in this scheme, what colour would look good on the wing membranes of my Gargoyles and Flyrant?
I'd use the grey from the skin and the red to do either a web of veins like you may see in bat wings or a mottled pattern patterns moving from the inside fading out towards the outer edge of the wings.
>>53840524
Nice. What'dyou coat pink foam with for durability?
>>53840524
What sort of cutting tool did you use?

Chaos terminators
Chaos possessed
Chaos space marines
Skullcrushers of khorne
Vanguard veterans
Deathwatch Kill team
And lastly hero bases

>>53841220
I love your orks anon. They have that gritty style that reminds me of that book from Imperial Armour. Can't wait to see the vehicles you'll paint for them
I have some primaris on the way, and I'm trying to figure out a paint scheme.
I've narrowed it down to Black Templars or Red Scorpions, which would look best on Primarines?
>>53841326
>can you guys help me find some reference how it should be painted?
It should be painted well, with a suitable palette of colours.
What that means? It's an art, not a science, so it's up to you to achieve that. Or more likely fail horribly.
>tin wood elf waywatcher?
Lead or pewter.

Don't want to waste a Gargoyle as a test model so I tried this.
Think these colors would work for the wings?
In honor of 8th edition, and me finally finishing the thermal cannon on my House Taranis Imperial Knight, I figured I'd show him off.
He's fully magnetized; any loyalist Imperial Knight loadout can be run with him. I tried for one of those 'armory porn' vehicle shots like they do with helicopters but my cell phone doesn't have the depth of field...or the resolution...to capture such an enormous model.
At least I got the lighting right, I think.

Mixed up a few different greens to make them into a Nurgle Kill Team for SWA
Need to finish his cloak highlights and the highlights on the rest of the team.

Been going apeshit with the stuff for cleaning, and it does no good even after applying/drying at the end.
The tip will get saturated with paint and as i press it agaisnt the miniature it either dunks it in blobs or applies nothing till i put pressure..at which point it bends and makes a thick line.
Idk maybe my brush>paint>minature timing is off

>>53847032

Paint might be too thin, or you are attempting to do it in a single coat instead of two thin ones.
Red is particularly fickle though so you might need 3 coats, and even then some touching up.

honest. first mini.
I do build military models (mainly aircraft) and the occasional gunpla kit but this is the first thing I've entirely handbrushed (besides the black basecoat, which I airbrushed). I painted this entirely with airbrush thinned acrylics with a bit of oil paints for light washes
Seems like my FLGS knows what's good. Feels good, man.
So, mainly a question about Dettol.
They say never mix water with it, makes sense.
But how do I completely avoid water if I need to rinse the brush off? I got water on a few of them and it made the strange red paint goop, I'm assuming another dettol sink-in will help remove that?
Either way, way better than simple green. That stuff did basically nothing for me.
>closest FLGS is 90 miles away, owner is moving away from minis
>>53847915That's what I've been doing. I only use a file on large stuff.

I don't think they look bad, they actually look more in line with blanche's type of artwork. The real problem is that so many of the other models don't go for actual grimness and instead just go for roid rage hulk out mega power super armor bulge man, so it makes them look out of place.

Maybe try some string. Twist it to make it look like rope. Flay it a bit for the effect. Soak it in watered down PVA glue and then fix it on there. Tie it around bits and whatever to make it look proper. Once it's dry it should be rigid, probably, and then you can wash it with a dark brown wash of some description.

they're painted to a nice standard. but they dont look 40k enough. It just looks like you sculpted some fur onto some fantasy marauders.
Personally I would try to either get some guardsmen torsos or something Aquila or lasgun related attached to them. You have a bunch of pouches over the horses but no weapons saddled it seems which makes it look a bit odd.
Maybe also try painting them an alternate colour from the rest of your army like a dark green? Just to distinguish them as Irregular scouts or light cav.
Hope this helps.

I'm at a stand still, I have no idea what to do with the fabric over his legs. I went with tan originally and just found it boring. So I went with black and tried painting the blood angel symbol and again it came off as dull. I am considering going with white or decorating it with a cool banner like design. Help me out /wip/
>>53849447
Cold off-white. Something that is nearly teal/turquoise. I'd say those colors themselves, but it would just clash really hard with your BAngel, so if you make it a light teal that graduates into "white", I think it might work.
>>53849473
Yeah was thinking something with a blue or sticking with grays. Also now considering staying with black but with a white or gold trim.
>>53849447
Black and just draw a line of gold around the edges but leaving a gap of black at the very edge. Add a winged blood drop transfer or something if you want.
Black shoulders will also look better than pure red.
>>53849517
You'll need to do a little curved fleur intersection or something on the corners with the gold trim.
>>53849517
>>53849524
This I like, will try it and put small yellow, red, or gold blood drops on the corner. Will also attempt to put on a transfer. My next update will hopefully include all that finished.

since the general isn't being of much help, maybe some of you could help me.
Seem, I'm looking for this page shown here, in better quality and resolution. I really wanna try to paint up a "test-model" for every color-scheme shown, but its so hard to make out any sort of detail that much is lost.
So, does anyone have this? all I know is that its from the Dark Imperium box, and that's it.
>>53849975
with the gold trim, it is too busy in my opinion, liked it more before, the tear with wings is good!
Is asking for advice on modification of miniatures allowed in this thread? If the answer is "yes", then could you tell if it's possible to modify the balljoints that connect limbs to the torso on Tau Crisis suits in a way that both allows the limb to move and doesn't allow it to fall off? If it is possible, could you provide information on how to do it?
>>53851239
Try gundam balljoint parts. It's basically the same thing anyway.
>>53851239
If you want an articulated suit you might try polycaps from Gundam models. Probably will require drilling though. Check out gunpla general on /toy/.
>>53851370
>>53851393
That would help with the arms, but what to do with the legs? Their balljoints are made in such a way that just replacing them with a different type of balljoint would affect the suit's appearance a lot.
>>53851461
There are spherical ball joints just like that available. Like I said, ask in gunpla or one of the waifubots threads. They have lots of joint shit.
>>53849857
Learn to google
>>53851512
Do you know what diameter the suit's leg balljoints are? I need this information to find a suitable moving joint.
>>53851666
Dunno, haven't 40k since '06. I was looking at google images as reference.
But wait, wouldn't replacing the joint require removing the balljoint which is already a part of the leg? Is that possible without making the leg unusable?
Need feedback.
Light source a shit. Aware of the mould lines. Still need to finish the base, green power source, red power sword, and red armor details/highlights.
>>53834587
Same poster, just went out and got Dark Imperium, does anyonw know if the chadmarines are difficult to repose?
>>53852063
Dark Imperium are snap-fit monopose apparently. Good luck with reposing anything that doesn't have a clean cut at the arm joint.
>>53851967
It does seem more work then its worth honestly.
>>53852415
Would it be easier to just 3d print a leg with a poseable joint?
>>53851239
I don't really like poseable miniatures, because moving parts will over time damage the paintjob.
Anyway you could replace the balljoint with a metal ball and use a magnet, that way you won't see anything.
>>53852490
That would still leave the problem of >>53851967.
Just finishing those two little tanks.
Warzone resurrection in case if you are wondering
>>53852490
This is actually a neat idea, the paint would get scuffed off quick though.
You could try making casts of the leg to experiment with.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx1p0cCSHso
Should I (super noob) follow this tutorial or is he doing it wrong?
>>53849975
Excellent. Get rid of the eye shadow though.
>>53852773
NO! keep the eye shadow!
Okay, for the Crisis suit hip joints, what I would do is first buy a package of ball joints of the right size. Then cut the ball off the leg of the actual model. You would then have to drill wholes through both the groin and the thigh, which requires a drill bit the correct size of the join pegs. You might also snip the groin peg shorter because of how thin the groin is. I would probably stuff some masking tap or something similar into the wholes to keep them tight without gluing, which would defeat the purpose.
Also you suck, because I can see in my head how to do this and now I want to try it, fuck.
>>53852833
Any ideas on how to cut off the ball without ruining the leg in the process?
>>53850748
please
>>53852955
I would probably, very carefully, score around it in circles with an exactoknife. I can't think of a better way without actually have one in my hands to examine.
>>53852504
well either way you have to step up your conversion game if you want to do this.
>>53853055
Looking at an image obviously can't compare to looking at the real thing, but this is how the suit's legs look. The balljoint is actually less integrated into the leg than I imagined, so that's a plus.

>>53850008
yeah, a friend of mine who almost got into the hobby had this kit and a hive tyrant sitting in his closet since 2001. he wound up selling the hive tyrant because it was still shrinkwrapped; but he passed this one on to me because it had been opened and the metal bits were glued together. was a great intro kit.
