They also accused him of focusing too much on his new mechanics at the expense of the story he was trying to tell, which was a conflict between a colored faction (I think all five colors, a la the Coalition from Invasion?) and a colorless faction, which were... some kind of spirits or something.

The rules committee could just change the rules to allow your commander to be a "legendary creature card, or planeswalker card." This is already a common houserule. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't been made official in some capacity.

Slapping Legendary onto planeswalkers means we're either getting more than one planeswalker with the same name (clone of Jace? time travel duplicate? supposedly we were supposed to get a evil doppelganger jace in Theros but it got cut from the story and turned into Ashiok and Xenagos I think) and it's going to be a common enough thing that it's easier to change it in the type line and modify the rules than it is to just slap a line of rules text onto the relevant card(s), OR, it means we're getting planeswalkers who're so commonplace that there's a bunch of them running around and we don't even get to learn their names, which flies in the face of everything they've been trying to push with planeswalkers recently.
