It's really not. It's significantly less complicated and in-depth than Stardust or Battlemage, there's just more to read. It's also significantly narrowed down once you choose which Books you'll be sticking with.

And next to Traveller or Universal War?
>>
>>53363285
I meant more of the complexity I guess. The most choices you're making are before it, and then you just read and pick who you like, so it's pretty short, if that makes sense

I like CYOAs to be relatively short and to make me yearn for that reality. My metric for the success of a CYOA, therefore, is how much emotional resonance and depth it packs into each page. By my metric, you're the best CYOA author. Star dust is so fucking huge I have no desire to bother with it. Space refugee is bretty gud, but it doesn't have the same density of awesomeness your Angel/Demon CYOA has.

More too read despite being simplier is not good. Obviously it's not a bad cyoa but you have to invest a lot of time to get any fun out of it.
>>
>>53363368
I get what he means, and use it as a doctrine for when I make my CYOAs. Anything that requires the reader to think but doesn't directly stimulate them or change the way they perceive the scenario inevitably gets chopped off my works.

If you're playing a game of imagination, do you really want to spend it doing anything other than imagining?

Anyone have the multi-page recent monstergirl survival cyoa that was posted in the last couple weeks? Iric, it wasn't 100% complete.

I couldn't find it in the archives and searching on deployed fob internet is stupidly slow. I'd rather survive sexy monstergirls than haji's.

Hey guys, just here to let you know that I'm changing the Zodiac Brides CYOA to Zodiac Husbands CYOA. All the new ones will be sexy men, and the old girls will be re-imagined as male. I finally came to terms with my sexuality, thanks to you all.
>>
>>53363458
It's not really a game of pure imagination. You're inserting yourself into someone else's imagination. To that end, it may be beneficial to have more information about how they think of "their" world.

Unless it's something like Time Stop Chill Zone, which is purely for you.

>>
>>53362927
>Your Magic: Blue/Black High Tide
Arbitrarily large magical reserves, time manipulation, knowledge gathering through Demonic Tutor and Blue Sun's Zenith, and the swiss army knife that is Cunning Wish. Good start for me.

>Your fetish
I get off on god/priestess BDSM roleplay. With my High Tide powers, I've pretty much got the god part down, and now I can turn women (and feminine men) into my devoted priestesses.

>Your vehicle
Harlequin-painted/bashed DEldar Raider. A webway-hopping pirate ship with plenty of drugs and guns, and geometry-defying insides for a cozy experience.

So I'm pretty much the Doctor.

>Do you have any ideas?

I always have ideas. Whether they're any good is another question.

Let's say you have a fantasy world with evil demons who spread destruction and death wherever they can. The humans have some source of powers, classes, magic or whatever that allows them to fight the demons. Typical fantasy CYOA stuff. Here's where it gets unique. The CYOA would have a completely optional section of demonic magics, imbuements, and other things. Taking anything in this section grants you more power, but there's a chance of becoming corrupted. The more stuff you take, the greater the chance, though there should obviously be a limit to how much you can take for balance reasons. There wouldn't be any mechanics in the CYOA about becoming corrupted; it's more of a roleplay and build choice thing. Becoming corrupted makes it easier for demons to influence you, and you'll eventually consort with them for more power. Inspiration for this idea was taken from Diablo 2.

Here's a "wife want's me to be with others but I'm too retarded to know" build

How
>???
What the hell? I barely know what's going on. This crazy woman just arrived in my life and started acting like we were dating or something. I've tried to tell her I'm taken but she doesn't care, and when I told my wife she just laughed it off like I was telling her a dumb joke.

I'll try to make the wife like my gf.
Wife:
>Aimless, kind, expressive, boyish, mature, affectionate, obsessive
I'm going with more clingy than obsessive. Obsessive sounds not very nice, but I enjoy when my girlfriend nags me to spend more time with her.
>Same Age, average butt, Average Breasts, Same Height, Healthy body, Fair/Bronze

And here's a chuuni highschool waifu
Mistress:
>Dramatic, boyish, obsessive, affectionate, witty, loud , expressive
>Younger, large Butt, average breasts, a little shorter, healthy weight, Pale/Fair

Home Life:
>She's become clingy
It's starting to feel like she's following me around. The weird part is it's not more than usual except for days when I'm around that crazy girl. It's like she's trying to catch me in a compromising situation, lucky I would never betray her trust.

Mistress Life:
>More Intrusive
I haven't done anything with her, and maybe that's making her try harder. She doesn't seem to care about my wife finding out. At least for all her weirdness she doesn't seem like a dangerous person, just can't take no for an answer so well.

End:
>???
Holy shit I found them talking together. What the hell is going on. They seemed like they were friends or something. They were with another girl too, but I've never met her I don't think. Wait, she's coming my way.

Anyone have the vampire king CYOA? I remember it getting a lot of content involving creating a kingdom and choosing allies once the obligatory waifu was chosen.
>>
So I've been on again-off again working on a sniper CYOA.

It'd be set in not-Russia during the battle of not-Stalingrad and you'd be able to choose to be not-Russian, not-American, not-British, or not-(one of several resistance movements) helping the not-Red Army fight off the not-Germans.

You wouldn't be winning the battle single-handedly or anything, just surviving in the bombed out shell of a former metropolis and helping how you can.

You can choose traits, equipment, companions, and even your roles and allies within the not-Red Army or traitors within the not-German camp.

This is all kind of lofty I know, but it's a neat image in my head and I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in actually playing it? It'd be my first and in all likelihood not amazing, but I like it enough to try for it.

What do you mean by this? The premises you've done so far don't really need much in the way of mechanics.

(In general, there seems to be a trade-off between narrative and mechanics, I think. CYOAs with a strong narrative focus tend to have simple mechanics and CYOAs with complex mechanics tend to have weak narratives.)

I think for the most part your mechanics mess fairly well with the kind of project your working on. I thought the choices in the Village one really helped provide a certain feeling, being able to dictate the level of strangeness, though I do think DS was not the most mechanically fitting CYOA for the concept you were building towards. I think what's important in making mechanics is making them fit with the rest of the CYOA and the general writing. A pick X isn't bad if it fits well. I've made mechanically complex ones and simple ones, and I think both can be quite enjoyable.

Do you have examples of the kinds of mechanics you'd like to do similarly?

>>53367021
I agree with you that narratively complex CYOAs tend towards simplicity and vice versa, but I think that's more than anything else just the result of habit and that it doesn't need to be the rule. I think my favorite CYOAs have always been the ones were later choices were affected by previous choices made at the beginning of the CYOA and that by the end what you've read and seen changes how you see the CYOA in its entirety, requiring you to go back and start from zero with the new information you've garnered. I consider this kind of CYOA to be the absolute pinnacle of the medium, as it uses the inherent choice mechanism and interlaces it with the narrative to betray the reader's expectations and create a new layer of depth. At some point I want to create a CYOA that achieves something similar, not just telling a good story or creating a fun world, but actively involving the reader with the choices they've made and forcing them to make a choice that they become invested in while not destroying any vestige of fun or cornering them in with some narrative contrivance or artificial point expenditure, you know the kind I'm talking about.

I consider myself mildly adequate in the english language, but at the end of the day I really wonder if I have the competency to create something that allows for that kind of atmosphere and then furthermore create a system that will complement and work into that atmosphere.

I'm not sure if I'm communicating well what I'm trying to say, but that's basically the gist of what I hope to create someday, a CYOA that goes beyond just being a silly game and becomes more for the individual as a story and as a game and as a series of choices.

I'm incredibly dumb for starting with a big idea for a CYOA, but I can't get into writing unless I have a whole big idea. This isn't really a WIP so much as it is a blueprint, as it contains a model for all of the basic things I want to include- you gather monster tribes, you gain their powers, and you grant them new powers. I made this to get feedback on the idea- how do you feel about the premise? The mechanics? Should I go with a point system, and if so, should the points be separated into army points and power points? Should their be more customization for your own character? The idea is that you lead an army, so your main focus is customizing them, but looking back, it sounds stupid to also say that you're absurdly powerful. I'd either change it to say that for some reason, you can't fight alone, or add more options for your own character, but the former makes you feel weak, while the latter takes attention away from your army, which was supposed to be the main focus.

On presentation, are the descriptions for the options too wordy or not wordy enough? I know the appearance sucks. I'd like to learn how to make a good looking CYOA in the future, but for now, I just want to write. If people like the idea and don't mind all text, I'd like to do all text for future installments and redo it with graphics some time in the future.

There's one more major mechanic that I intend to add, but not now lest I get overwhelmed: leaders. Each race will have a few named characters who can lead a tribe of their race and grant their tribe some additional skills. so that there are companion type characters and further options for customization.

>>
>>53367319
The main thing that makes these threads bad is people like you who would rather complain about drama than do something constructive like reply to this >>53367315 guy.
>>
>>53367104
Don't get me wrong, I don't think the CYOAs I've made were necessarily bad. I'd rather say that so far I've felt that most of my work has been "ungraceful" in that it fails to become what it could have been. I know that the standard opinion in these threads is "CYOAS are just masturbatory toys for manchildren" and to some degree I can understand that viewpoint, but I love stories and want nothing more than to create them in ways that are significant and meaningful. I can't help but feel somewhat sad when I look back on what I've made and think that they could've been much better if I had just hit upon the correct idea in that moment.

As for what kind of mechanics I want to play with. I really like the idea of point expenditure that is inherently meaningful to the story. I've got a few CYOAs in the works that make use of point systems that are more natural to the setting than "gold coins" or "credits" or "wizard bucks" or whatever.

There are also mechanics of preference I'd like to play around with like something allows for the reader to make more choices if they limit themselves in some specific way that also makes other choices harder to obtain. I'm thinking of a class system of sorts.

All in all I really do have too many ideas and need to trim the fat or else run the risk of having most of my stuff rot in the word documents, but in general just want to create interesting things.

Looks good man; perhaps as a reason for not having your demon lord fight solo you're still building your physical form and power, hence the need for an army?

I don't mind big reams of text, but having pictures breaking them up certainly makes things more accessible.

Leaders could be fun, as they might add a more personal element to the builds.

Will there be challenges for your army to face?

I used to work for the Empire as a paper pusher but I made a mistake one day when I filled out the wrong form and shipped a prototype Golem to my home. So you're saying you want mechanics to flow more smoothly and naturally? I can understand that. >>
>>53367315
Something I forgot to add- I'd also like to add noncombat skills. These'll be skills like mining (as seen in the Gnome example), education, and alchemy. As I said, you may not want to build an army, but forge your own kingdom instead. On that note, I'll probably change some instances of the word "army" with "populace".

>>53367376
Thanks, that's one idea for not focusing on your character. Mostly, I'm afraid that anons who like to power trip will feel like they're playing second fiddle to their own army.

Also, there'll definitely be some quests/challenges for your army, but I'd rather set the groundwork first with the tribes/powers/leaders.
>>
>>53367502
Not him, but I personally don't mind point systems so long as there is some attempt at justifying them beyond being a CYOA and there needing to be balance. Things like the vending machine having costs for all the items it vends and you having limited cash on you, or years spent learning magic from a wizard in another. I don't even mind them when they're barefaced points, as long as the narrator or setting can justify why they're presenting you a choice like that. They'd be incredibly out of place in something like Urban Unease or the recent one with the dying girl, but I think they work fine as long as the context supports it.
>>
>>53365493

>>53367537
>which could even be construed as NTR
Bro this is over a CYOA literally about cucking your wife. I know what event set off your paranoia, it was over that dude flipping out over that russian writer nerd girl. But that was over a year ago. You gotta accept that whoever you're so triggered about is either long gone or learned to shut up. What's more, you have to be able to understand the difference between someone being as paranoid as you in the other direction and seeing it where there isn't any, and someone insulting a literal, actual cuck CYOA.

I don't know though, anon. Why do people assume they have magic psychic powers and can tell who everyone is on an anonymous message board?
>>
>>53367548
Oh, I don't think there's anything wrong with them, I just meant that if you're trying to create an authentic feeling having something brazenly be points can be counterproductive, though that's not important for every single work, and I didn't mean to suggest it was. The only reason I'm so fixated on it was because making that narrative choice was something I dealt with when making the dying girl one, and it got me really thinking about how the structure can benefit from flowing from the narrative. Not that it was a particularly /right/ way of doing things. I think it's just a decision when balancing it as a game vs it as a story.

That'd be cool, though it sounds like that would end up more as a fantasy kingdom maker with an option to go to war than an army maker with an option for peace, if you get me. Thats not necessarily bad, it just feels like it changes the tone a fair bit.

>Mostly, I'm afraid that anons who like to power trip will feel like they're playing second fiddle to their own army.

I wouldn't sweat that too much; not every CYOA has to be about your own personal power levels, and there are already plenty to fill that void for those who need it.

>Vanguard - Armorer
I rely upon my body alone; no magic, no demons, no gimmicks. Armorer is boring, but the most practical. The other specializations can be learned through combat.

>The Burning Deep
Hopefully I'm not in over my head here. The Sewers are tempting due to relative safety, but the payoff seems too low. The Lair is only worthwhile if I choose Reclaimer, and I don't want to be a glorified recycler. I plain dislike the sound of the Catacombs; too much death (and undeath). Might as well go the full mile if I'm that deep already.

>Nyalee Norocelli
Party mage, possible healer (I imagine water magic has something that can fit the role), and potential romantic interest. Scary in-laws won't keep me away from monster waifu.

>Sherry Marple
The party burglar. She'll relieve a lot of stress by eliminating the threat of traps and keeping our morale up. Lower appetite might come in handy, as will her wingman skills. I hope she can keep her head down in a fight. And I'm just gonna pretend those doujins don't exist.

>Ra'Kot
Party diplomat and backup melee. I firmly believe any violence that can be avoided should be, so his skills are a welcome addition. And it'll be nice not being the only boy in the party.

Decent CYOA, for what it's worth.

Kinda hard to say how to pick a different pic in a vacuum. As for balancing the last two:

1. Career Woman Fencer
2. Tomboy Ranger
3. Sweetheart Druid
4. Loopy Dancer
5. Free Spirit Cleric
6. Twin Mages
7. Stubborn Knight
8. ALEXANDER KING OF KINGS
9. Stalker Shifter
10. Motherly Spiritcaller

The last two pictures seem less sugary than the previous characters, so that's a good start. You seem to have 5 direct combat classes, 4 casters, and one stalker.

The last two characters look like a gunzerker and seductress. I think you can make that work.

11. Vicious Gunzerker
12. Aggressive Seductress/Gambler

I'd try to made them significantly different from the East Houses, as well as Leo-Aries. They have the more similar personalities.

By the way, good job with Sagittarius. I share the sign and I planned on picking similar elixirs. Unfortunately for her, I'm Team Angelica.

>Party mage, possible healer (I imagine water magic has something that can fit the role)

She doesn't, but she's about to. I realize I screwed up by making Cassandra the only team mate with healing abilities, especially as the whole point is you're stuck for a long term dungeon crawl. I'm adding moderate heals to Nyalee and out of combat heals to Ra'Kot; I might give Sherry something similar.

Do you guys find yourself making constant changes to your CYOAs or am I just not thinking ahead enough?
>>
>>53368037
I don't create, I consume. But I imagine it's fairly common, since a lot of CYOAs get updates. Each author probably goes about it differently.

I guess I'm just worried about irritating people by posting a new version each thread saying "Hey guys I added 17 new words, please enjoy"

How do you people do it? Do you just find a fitting background image, resize it, then start putting boxes and text over it? How do you get that sort of fade effect you see in some CYOAs where the background image is faded to let the text that's over it stand out better? What program are you using? In gimp I apply a mask over an image layer and then use a soft gradient to get it to fade it out. I repeat the process with several more thematically consistent images and use that as a background.

Here's what the background for Urban Unease looks like without any of the choices on top for reference of how the effect comes out looking.

I prefer using a single image whenever possible like in the village, but it's often not possible for really tall CYOAs so I compromised in this case.

The whole "get a rank in whatever powers a race has" seems like it should work fine, especially if you can do something like exchange those power ranks at something like 2:1 or 3:1 (or similar) ratio to get a rank in whatever power you want.
>Should their be more customization for your own character?
Letting you mix-and-match physical aspects from each race you have in your army should probably be enough.

I get the impression you'll be able to subdue or talk down most of the ones you don't romance.

How about a CYOA where some akbar blows himself up next to you and you get to go to Islamic heaven instead of him, because Allah's not actually cool with that shit?

You get to customize your Houri, even going full hardcore with the clear, see-through skin with only the blood in her bones visible look if you want (yes that's actually a thing.) Then I suppose you choose other things you want to do/have in your afterlife, sorta like your typical comfy or plane builder CYOA to a degree.

And of course, 40 virgins would be one of the choices.

Eh, I honestly prefer the ones where you get too choose actual characters for stuff like than as opposed to building them from a menu of choices.

The Crusades are so fucking shit compared to the whole thing Muslims have done. An area that can fit inside Texas against Muslims and now like X amount of the entire modern world. You lost. Fucking shit have you lost.

Maybe that fedora is on to tight anon, not everyone is catholic and where I live muzzies are relatively unheard of except when we hear them on the news blowing something up or driving trucks into people in other countries

Completely disagree. You're using meta knowledge to change your choices.

I don't really understand how this happened, but:
Melissa (Wife): Refined, Kind, Feminine, Charming, Calming, Stoic
Same age, average boobs and butt, tall height, normal weight, pale skin
Ashley (Mistress): Dramatic, affectionate, boyish, witty
Significantly younger age, small butt, average boobs, short height, muscular tone, dark skin

My wife is... happier now? I thought I understood her, but I guess I don't.
Ashley's hiding something though. Is she cheating on me? (Yes. With my wife.)

So Melissa arranged the whole thing? She saw my appreciative glance at Ashley that one time and decided it was her wifely duty to help me out. And to hear her talk she doesn't intend for that to be the only time...

For PS you can apply a mask to an image layer (there is a mask icon at the bottom of the layer palette) and then use the gradient tool, choose the option that is black to transparent and then drag the gradient with the mask selected.

SDA has some good PS tutorials for things like this in his drive, that's listed in the pastebin. You can also search youtube for simple effects.
