good someone fired up a new WIP thread

I was looking for some advice on doing tattoos/body markings. I'm doing some models that I want to do tattoos on, and I'm mostly just curious if I should be doing them before or after a wash?

I'm concerned because I normally use Reikland Fleshshade for a flesh wash but some of the models are going to have blue tattoos or face paint. How do I do that without the red muddying up the blue?

I've tried using printed background instead of just piece of white paper and I'm quite happy with results. Also I've realized, that I still have so many stuff to highlitght on them, and my game is at tuesday.

>>53219886
VGC is okay, but i had several issues with separation and just bad quality on certain colours. Vallejo Game Air metalics are super hot and worth every money. Atm I'm mostly using citadel (even tho pots are worst than dropper bottles) because I like their coverage on base range, washes and several layer colours (like sotek green).
If I were you and comming back to hobby, I'd pick citadel.

I enjoy Game Color better than Citadel because holy fuck, even on a wet surface it feels like Cit paints evaporate into nothingness faster than Vallejo/P3/Etc.

I just got a thing of Astrogranite, has anyone else used these textures and liked them? It feels like I could have simply glued sand on and given it badab black wash.
>>
>>53220007
Citadel texture paints are good quality, but very expensive for what you get. For twice of the price, you can get whole jar (like 200ml or something) of Vallejo sand/black lava paste, that will last you forever and gives same effect.

Still tho, ready pastes are 1000 times better than wasting your time with sand glue, primer and paint to get same effect.

Doing some work on Only War characters, so needed a Chain Axe(two handed) and a heavy stubber.

Doing some conversion work, this is what I've got so far. Some questions though.

On the axe, any suggestions on a power source? I want to attach something to the haft to make the whole thing a bit more bulky.

On the stubber, do you think it still looks too long? Actual Chaingun itself was super long, so I wanted to the mounting down some, but it still feels really long.

I'm also a little unsure if I want to show the model actually shooting it, or if I want to have the model carrying it on their back. Which do you think will look better?

I got around to buying one of those "start collecting" sets ( Stormtroopahs ) - and now they're sitting on my desk in the box because I'm afraid of fucking them up royally since this is the first time.

Is it generally a good idea to paint the bits before cutting them off and gluing them together?
>>
>>53220817
Cut them off, glue the torso/legs/head/backpack together, glue the arms/weapon together AFTER dry-fitting (so, no glue) to make sure everything fits. Paint the arms/weapon separately. It makes it easier. Don't paint on the sprue.
>>
>>53220817
It's a terrible idea. Put everything together except the stuff that is obscuring other parts, i.e. usually weapons plus maybe arms and heads, depending on preference. Paint those seperatly and then finish the assembly.
>>
>>53220839
That just sounds too much like common sense to me. Thanks.

If I paint them on the sprue - cutting them off can bugger up the paint already applied?

Got one more question - I did actually paint one model before ( a space marine ) that I got as part of that pack with the three Ultras and some paints in. One problem is that some sections of the model developed this weird grainy texture underneath the paint - not severe but enough to annoy. Is that from touching the paint while still too wet?
>>
>>53220935
>If I paint them on the sprue, cutting them off can bugger up the paint already applied

Yes, and you'll have to paint the areas the sprue was attached to, where you'll ALSO need to prime again. With how many people use spray primer, it's just messy that way.

>grainy texture
If you touched the paint while it was wet, that's a possibility. Bad primer, or no primer at all, could do it too.
>>
>>53220965
Damn. I'm glad I asked because I was actually seriously considering this as something to try.
>>
I just had a really crazy idea for a conversion to use in Warhammer Fantasy Battle. I had been toying with the idea of how to do a Warhammer version of the Phantom of the Opera as part of a Vampire Counts army, and I got the idea that maybe a Mortis Engine where the phantom is playing a pipe organ would work. Would the Sisters of Battle Exorcist bits be convertable to work on a Mortis Engine, or is that piece too big? Should I be thinking about using little pieces of plastic rod and converting the upper half of the Mortis Engine into a pipe organ? I'd still need to source a mini that could be converted into the phantom sitting down at a keyboard, also.
>>
Why is there so many too thicc paint on faces fags who boast about those shitty miniatures? Looking at the archives right now

It's a meme because' it's a common beginners' mistake. Acrylic model paint is almost always too thick to paint with when you buy it, and people who don't know that frequently end up having disasters when they try to paint.

those blue guards are one particular anon that really keeps at it even though he's become something of a meme for his poorly done faces.
pretty admirable if you ask me, and he's improving
>>
>>53221110
Hrm. The size should be similar, but it's the weight that worries me the most. The Exorcist organ bits are solid metal, and the Mortis Engine is fairly fragile (assuming you're planning on plonking the organ down on top). You'd have to find some way to subtly reinforce the platform and ghosts.

There's also the fact that acquiring the Exorcist bits at all is going to be difficult and pricey.

It IS a bitchin' idea though, and I wish I'd thought of it.
>>
>>53220381

>>
>>53222929
Yeah the KS looks pretty janky generally, outside of three painted vampire minis, the only miniatures that are rendered (the skellies) are in a weird greek style that, while cool, doesn't fit any of the other minis/concepts. Seems sort of thrown-together, and the aggressive and constant misspelling of "model" is legitimately unsettling

there you are. i fucking hate you but love you man.
your models do look great on table too (though that may be cause they are facing the enemy lol.)

in my level of painting i wouldn't call those faces tabletop or acceptable by my standards, but i spend over 2-3 days for a single fucking model because i get some perfectionist autistic OCD.

your models look great though and you're a good sport, so i'll let you and /tg/ in on my secret face painting technique. (again this is only if you want to improve your models, but they are a bit of a meme now so i dunno, but IMO 10+ years of painting this is my favourite/easiest face method.

>white
just make the whole face white
>purple wash
thin the fuck out of purple paint. I use maggaroth night with like 1 tiny drop purple and like 7 or more drops of lahmian medium and apply a thin coat of that to the model
>Seraphim Sepia
same as the purple, but with Seraphim Sepia, thin it out and apply over the face

you now have a face that looks similar to that of 'eavy metal's quality

mortis engine pipe organ.jpg

Somone on Dakka seems to have had a similar idea to mine, with a pipe organ mortis engine. Oddly enough, theirs is apparently inspired by Davy Jones' pipe organ from Pirates of the Caribbean and is part of a zombie pirate-themed VC army (you can tell by the pirate hats on the ghosts and the peg leg on his organ player, who has a Phantom-style mask).

I think the Exorcist pipe organ would probably be too big for the Mortis Engine base, and it contains many elements that would be out of place, particularly all those purity seals that would have to be shaved off. Even with a recast from Z the kit would cost $16, which seems like a bit of a waste since I wouldn't be using most of it.

I think it would make more sense just to modify the actual Mortis Engine with some polystyrine rods cut up to look like organ pipes. One place the other guy made a mistake is that he used wooden dowel rods, which aren't the best material since the ends tend to have a rough texture even after sanding.

These plastic rods are really cheap and I think 3mm would be a good thickness for the pipes. With a pin drill I could hollow them out for a bit of extra detail. Adding the pipes to the existing Mortis Engine structure would give it a very eerie and gothic look, which I think would fit well with the rest of my VC army.

http://r.ebay.com/2RdaBo

Unfortunately I don't know where to source an organ console or a mini for the phantom himself. I might have to fabricate the console on my own out of plasticard and greenstuff if all else fails, but if anyone has any ideas for how to make a phantom mini I'm all ears.

A mask and cape shouldn't be hard to sculpt on with greenstuff, but I don't know what figure or figure bits to start with. Plastic or resin mini bits would obviously be a lot easier to work with since I would likely be customizing his pose a fair bit.
>>
>>53227168
>Unfortunately I don't know where to source an organ console
4grounds to have lasered pianos. I mean an organ is not really the same but maybe you can use that as a start.

For the phantom itself you could try looking into vampire miniatures. The old timey b-movie archetype of slicked back hair, suit and cape should get you halfway there.

Any advice on how to strip superglue off a Forge World model (specifically a Knight). I found one used that I'm tempted to pick up, but it's pretty badly built so I'd want to rebuild it from more or less the ground up. Most solvents I can find or think of would dissolve or damage the resin as well, which is of course unacceptable.
>>
>>53229500
I've never had a ton of luck getting glue off of resin. Others may have tricks that work better, but I usually resort to scraping/chipping it off, which could be a helluva job on a model that size

If it's superglue and not plastic cement, you should be able to just freeze the model to make the glue incredibly brittle.

Any tips on highlighting dark angels?
No matter how thin my paint is or how great my brush control is, I manage to fuck it up somehow.

Most of the time the paint dries on the brush while I am working. Its really frustrating since its my first time painting an official color scheme and I really want it to look good.

I use moot green and another green I can't remember the name of. Both of them are recommended by gw for dark angels, if that means anything.

>>
>>53230188
I've had mixed experience with freezing. Sometimes it works like the fucking hand of god, otherwise the glue just laughs at me and makes me feel insufficient. But it might end up being my best bet.

Even if it's a bit more shitty than a brand new Knight, that might justify the $60-ish saved.

First-time painter here. Finished this little dude last night but didn't have much light to work with. Finally got a good shot by standing in front of my window.
I'm using Tamiya acrylic paint because it's within budget and I've had success thinning it down with water. I also have a little bottle of Nuln Oil which does wonders to tone down the brightness.
I realize the colors might seem unmatched but it appeals to me and the others will get more blacks and greys due to their different clothing.
The paint's a little globbed up in places and I haven't been able to highlight the edges very well, but overall I'm satisfied with it.

What wisdom do you have for me? I can probably afford one or two quality paints if it would help.

First time? Good job m8!
Wisdom for you:
a) thin your paints - don't try to fully cover with a color in one go. You'll end up with a much nicer, smoother finish
b) don't use Nuln Oil for everything. It's good for silver/gun metalics and low saturation colors, but it makes most colors look super dirty. If you want a more universal wash Agrax Earthshade is good for a lot of colors, but I'd recommend getting for example drakenhof nightshade if you plan on painting a lot of blue

1. red+a bit of brown basecoat
2. agrax all over
3. more agrax in the creases
4. (optional) more agrax in any place I feel like could still use more
5. layer the same red+brown as in 1 everywhere but in the creases
6. layer red without brown on any remotely raised area
7. add a bit of yellow to the red and layer over slightly more raised areas than in 6
8. add a bit more yellow to the mix and layer over even more raised areas than in 7
9. add even more yellow and highlight only small areas, like the very top of a wrinkle, or the edge of the cape

I can quickly make a visual guide in photoshop if you feel like the description isn't enough

as for more general tips: make sure your paint is thin, so that you get a really smooth finish and use appropriately sized brush (one that would allow you to do a whole highlight/layer (I mean one of the first, big ones) in one stroke would be ideal

I enjoy it well enough, but therein lies the problem of real, not meme depression. Finding the energy to actually do it is impossible. When I get home from work, I never want to do anything because I hate my job and not even plastic army men can fix that. Then, I have to worry about how
long it takes, even when I only pull out one thing at a time to work on. Info Ken easily spend 7 hours on one model, which is then compounded by a whole squad of dudes, and that's potentially two weeks worth of unpaid work for what, 150 points at most?

Even if I wanted to drop the hobby all together, I couldn't because not only is it really my only excuse for socializing, I have people counting on me to be there. That includes the store owner because I'm more or less in charge of running the warhammer stuff.

Stop being a faggot and just do it. That's the solution ever time, it's not meme depression or "muh real depression" it's simple reality. It's much easier to jerk off to tranny porn and watch the latest marvel film than it is to do something constructive.
>>
>>53235678
Currently dealing with depression too. The best advice I can give you is to absolutely FORCE yourself to do stuff. Its so difficult, but the more you force yourself to do things, the easier you'll find it, and more enjoyment you'll get from them.

Saying that, don't feel obliged to partake in a hobby you're losing interest in just because of some small responsibilities!

And one thing that has helped me massively is making sure to do a little bit of light exercise, even if that's just taking the dog for a walk every day. Hope you can crack it, stay strong!
>>
>>53235363
One trick for thinning your paint, don't dip the tip of your bruh in the water but use the other end, that way you can put a single drop of water on the palette which makes it easier to guess how much water you're using.

>t. Someone who's never been depressed
>implying I jerk off at all

>>53235751

Been dealing with it for literally my whole life. Regularly going to therapists as a child and teen does great things for your social life, and I haven't figured out if my lack of friends was because of basically being told I was broken, or I was broken because I had no friends. It's basically a chicken/egg scenario, though I never understood why I needed friend's. I really should really be on some type of medication, but uninsured therapy sessions and medication is significantly more expensive than plastic crack, which is something hilariously wrong with burgerland. According to my government, here's what's considered "affordable" for someone who makes $12/hr
>$200/mo insurance
>$100 copays
>$6000 deductible
>0% prescription coverage

So biweekly sessions would cost me $400/mo plus the cost meds as opposed to spending maybe $80/mo average on warhammer.

>>53235908
The problem with forcing myself to do it is that it drains anything fun out of the whole thing, which then makes it feel like a chore, or worse a job, which strips all the will to do it. There's a balance that needs to be met, which is honestly the hardest part. I can't overload on inspiration because then it loops back and crushed the spirits, and I can't overload on JUST DO IT because it takes what little fun is left out of it. There's a medium in there somewhere that ends up being "eh, fuck it" where I actually get shit done.

The meds I was on as a teen never really did anything. One made me gain Anton of weight, and the other basically turned me into a zombie. Meds and shit is just about finding what works, though. Sadly, it's mostly just throwing shit at the wall and hoping something sticks. Counselling depends on you and your counsellor, really. You have to be able to tell them everything, and they have to be able to help. It's a two-way street.

>>53236278
I'm on the other side of the country, sorry. As for my job, I cut metal and operate heavy machinery. If was anywhere else doing the same shit, I'd likely be making $18/hr, but the PA job market is shit.

You'd be surprised at how many people out of the military play warhammer. At one point in 5th edition, HALF of my meta were out of the armed forces. If you really want to be a member of society, then you have to go to society. Find a game store and ask about warhammer. Make a Facebook group, or a Craig's list add. If literally 0 of your LGS in the area play warhammer, then ask the owner of its ok to paint/assemble in the store. That's what I did here, and we've got about 10 people that play between 2 games stores with more and more getting interested.

I'm gonna be honest, all of it looks like a mess, and not in the good sort of way.
The model kinda just looks like a blob of paint. Everything look undefined and very... bland. A wash and highlights will help with that. Might just be the lighting.
Also, the color scheme is very boring. Nothing pops out cause everything is either brown/green or a combination of the two. That's just a matter of personal preference, feel free to ignore this.
And I know it's a meme, but seriously. Thin your paints.
>>
>>53235678
>currently depressed and have been, on and off, for about 6 years
>have $1000+ worth of models sitting around to assemble and paint
It's a shitty feel, I know.
I only work on models when I can feel myself slipping back into some semblance or normality. If I try to work on them when I'm really bad off I just get frustrated when I make a mistake (which is quite often seeing as how I'm more or less unable to muster up much energy to work well) and slip deeper and deeper into into it.
I practically only work when I can feel a step forward back outta this pit now. I really have to force myself to get shit done, but it helps. Not quickly, but it helps.

My depression comes from Type 2 Bipolar which makes it all the worse. I buy tons and tons of models on the highs then let them collect dust the entire time I'm in a low. Feels bad.

>>53236678
>when priming a mini with aerosol primer, is it better to potentially miss a couple of spots the mini, or to do another 'coat' and risk losing some of the finer details?
Better to miss a few tiny spots on the mini that won't be seen and/or get worn than it is to overprime and lose detail all over the model. It's hard to know when you got enough primer on, it's more of a gut thing based on experience than it is anything else IMO.
I'd take it reeeal slow and do a couple of coats, hitting the model from all directions each time. Slowly build up the primer rather than slap it all on at once. Before each new coat give the model a twice-over and see where it needs more and where it doesn't and prime accordingly. It'll help you get full coverage without losing detail.
>>
>>53236943

I get that, actually. Major Depression and Bipolar is what I was officially diagnosed with. The highs are generally mild but enough to be a problem like overspending, and the lows are empty voids. My advice is to get help if you can, especially if you're still with your parents.

Hide shit you're not working on, and paint one dude at a time. Who cares how many you still have left. They don't matter because you're not working on them. One step at a time.

>>53236956

Money. It's a catch22. I don't make enough to move so I can make more money. Even if I stop spending my $80/mo on warhammer, that's only $960 at the end of the year. That's not even a down payment on an apartment. On top of that, I have student loans I can't afford to pay back, which have ruined my credit score. Honestly, thinking I would actually make my way through school was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!

I do agree that he looks a bit too bland (especially on these phone pics).
I have put some washes on him but they didn't come out at all the way I wanted besides the Sepia on the armour. That might just have to do with me picking the wrong kinds of washes and not using lamian medium. I'll definately have to go back and retry with other kinds. What types would you recommend for the moustasche, skin and pants?

As I'm extremely incapable of doing highlights without fucking everything up I wonder if there are some good ways to practice that skill without having to ruin minis.

Regarding the thinning of my paints I can tell you that I pretty much always do that, this mini included and I can't really see where on it I should've thinned them further. The lack of highlights combined with the shitty pic-quality does make it look like the paint is much thicker than it is IRL.
After I've redone the washes I might ask my roommate if he can take a better pic with his camera.

painting question
I'm at the stage when I should use wash but I'm not sure how to go about it, because I used oil paints
normally, for canvas, I'd use a mix of three even parts of oil, white spirit and varnish with the desired finish tinted with the colour I'd like the wash to be

while painting I dialed back the oil as much as possible, thinning with white spirit and I think it worked out as it should

now I'm thinking what should do the trick would be a 50/50 mix of white spirit and varnish tinted with the colour, if anyone has any other ideas I'll hear them

I'd greatly appreciate it of someone could tell me what kind of consistency and colour saturation I should be going for, since this is my first time painting miniatures and I never used store bought model wash - for canvas I rarely do washing, but then I do I got for very thin, more transparent than not mix

And with that some more plaguebearers I still gotta finish. The left two I did normally and the right two I attempted to replicate the resident sick ass nurgle painter's style. Nowhere near as good but experimenting was fun.

Great, thank you. Of the three models I've primed, I think one is a little bit too coated, one is a little bit undercoated and one is just right. I'll probably go back and re-coat the one that needs a little more but it'll be a good learning experience even if I fuck it up.

Thanks. I used khorne red and evil suns scarlet. It's not really visible in the photo but it probably needs more.

i fucking hate Yarrick, just hate it, got it like 9 months ago and never finished painting him, i haven't even entirely base coated him.

i dislike scions for painting, but its mostly due to my paint scheme that makes them look tactical but also gold as fuck.

I love tanks though, fucking love tracked vehicles. Currently working on a Basilisk i still need to agrax the rivets and recesses, smaller details, periscopes, painting and attaching the searchlight and smoke launchers. texturing the tracks and then drybrushing, then the crew.

You seem to have an idea going here, but it lacks definition. Its just a blob, cant see where armor/etc (its supposed to be armor?) ends or starts.
And defo ruined with corrosion, less is more.

I love painting ork boyz because I can be as random and dirty with each of them and no two orks will be the same with enough creativity.

I hate painting ork boyz because I plan to paint 90 of them and I can't help but paint each and one of them with love and care. Plus the 90 gretchin that goes with them. Help.

I respect giving them all the love and detail but mate save your self the trouble and base/dip them. As someone with aprox. 200 boys painted you break after a point I tell you what.

Working on my terminator wolf lord still, weapons are pretty much set just need to clean up some areas, add some bits, and greenstuff some fur to cover the shoulder gaps

I'm trying to decide on what to put on the top of the armor and for what head to use

Should I leave the faceplate and put in a smaller head like the one with the eyepatch? Or cut out the plate and put something like the grille helmet or one with a beard that wouldn't normally fit

Also this is going to be my first foray into greenstuff any tips?
