2nd for "my army is no longer playable." Nerfing summoning was obviously needed to make Word Bearers in line with Death Guard...plus I imagine most this list will be illegal due to GW not making models for it/there being no more formations/Warlord traits. I'm going to miss Warlord Psyker Defiler.

Here's a thought: If independent characters grant nearby units special traits, then maybe we could have a Tank Commander who grants crazy infantry bonuses.

Obadiah Scheffer and his Vanquishers of loudness anyone?
>>
>>53206521
It's almost like basing an army on getting free points is something they want to avoid.
>>
>>53206541
And what exactly is wrong with that? It's almost like having some way to replenish losses over the scope of the game serves as a way to protect against alpha or beta strikes (like mass Lictorshame or mass Warp Spiders)...

This was a themed build, designed around a funny gimmick (a Word Bearer Defiler being able to summon stuff), with a few supporting pieces to round it off. I seriously doubt there's anything OP about that.
>>
So, can anyone explain how the new hitting/wounding system mixes with weapon type?

So, let's take the Battle Canon, since this is the weapon that made me realize I didn't understand. Assuming it's shot by a guardmen, it'll probably be 4+ to hit. Now the Battle Canon is a Heavy D6 weapon type.

Does this mean I roll a D6 to get the number of dice I get to "shoot with"? Or does this mean that if I hit once, I hit D6 models in the squad? And then each model hit would suffer D6 wounds, if they failed their save?

Oppositely, if I'm shooting say, a Dreadnaught, can my Battle Canon hit the dreadnaught 3 or 4 times, each "hit" doing D6 wounds?

TL;DR someone please explain how shooing works now.

Just finished the last game of 7th I'll have with my group, it's funny how (as a mech guard player) my lists have been called overpowered and units like Pask have been the centre of people's nightmares over the last year. Us guard players have been playing bloody tooth and nail this addition, and have been doing ok despite all the online bitching. Can't wait for 8th too!

>>
>>53206739
meh, I'm a chimera chassis player who plays pask as the only lemans in their list. To me I can't wait.
>>
>>53206613
It's simple:
Roll a D6. This is the number of attacks the battle cannon makes.
Roll that number of dice. Collect the ones that made a 4+, just like a shooting attack.
Roll strength 8 vs enemy toughness
Enemy rolls saves
For every unsaved attack, roll D3 for the number of wounds the unit takes. The D3 does not spill over to other units.
>>
>>53206858
That's a huge nerf.
>>
>>53206858
I thought you saved versus number of wounds, not save against hits and then receive multiple wounds?
>>
>>53206925
It's a big buff against single targets.
>>
>>53206739
Man I know that feeling. I preferred being able to identify the threats to my tank and angling the armor accordingly. Now it's "Yep, that's definitely a threat. Can't really do anything about it because I'll fire at BS2 if I move and the attack will effect me just as much from the front as the rear."

or in other words...

"Oh, look, a meltagun behind me. Ah well, I can take it: I got 7 wounds!"
>>
Yes.
>>
>>53206943
No. If you hit a terminator, and you roll a 2+ to wound him and succeed, then he rolls is 2+ armor save (now negated to 4+ armor save courtesy of the new AP rules) and only if he fails do you roll the D3. If you roll a 2 or better you kill that model and move on to the next model and roll another D3. If your were to roll a 1 on that next terminator then the terminator would have one would left, even if you rolled 3 damage on the previous terminator.
>>
>>53206953
And doing things like having a squad of guardsmen hugging the back of the tank to provide the AV10 area with a cover save from deep strikers as well as protecting the squad from small arms fire coming in from the front was both fun and fluffy.

Now we might as well just not give any infantry support to the tanks as they are basically mini MCs.

>>

Yet another example of a 7th list that simply won't work in 8th due to the way the rules were rewritten. This army has no HQs or characters, hence a Russ Warlord. This build relies on armor saturation and near-universal infiltrate/outflank, and mass Tank Hunters. Illegal of course.

Though I'm pretty glad summon spam is getting nerfed, it kinds seems like really they just went 0-100 or in this case 100-0 with it. Like yeah Horror summon spam was retarded, and cult summon could get a little out of hand in smaller point games, but it seems to me they could have just nerfed Horror/tzeentch, not the entirety of the mechanic. So today was the first time I experienced an insane player.

Was playing Blood Angels versus Chaos Marines. Everything was alright except the guy I was playing against was major rule lawyering and every time I made a measurement with my tape, he would annoyingly use his own tape to measure what I just checked. Also he would debate that one of his marines was not under my flamer template, when clearly the base of it was, (for some reason he glued all his models so that they stood on the very edge of the bases and informed me that when it came to weapons I had to be able to -see- his model in entirely yet because they bases were 2 inches apart it was legal.

So besides the fact that this dude was a major tool, what REALLY drove me nuts was he made all his rolls without me seeing. What I mean is this guy would roll all his dice in a building used as terrain on the board, and conveniently I was not able to see whatever her rolled.

I bit my tongue at first but the amount of "lucky" rolls he was getting was insane.

He has to make 8 cover saves? He makes them all.
He is wounding me on 5s? Somehow I have to make 4 saves.

But what finally did it for me was when my squad of Death Company went to charge his chosen. Again he rolled in the building and somehow rolled 6 6s. And then killed 4 of my marines with Plasma.

This was just suppose to be a "friendly" match. So I was removing my killed models and asked him if from now on he could please roll his dice in the open so that we can both see the results. The fucker has the balls to look at me offended and say "Why?"

"Because it's just being courteous and it just seems like the dice gods have been really favoring you today."

He starts claiming I am accusing him of cheating and is telling me I am just being a sore loser. He also says he doesn't have to reveal his rolls. He was making such a scene that the guy who organizes the games came over and asked what was going on. Continue in next post.
>>
>>53207535

I'd be lying if I said my army wasn't primarily princes and horrors because that's how I played in 5th. That doesn't do so well in AoS from what I've gathered. I have some failcast flamers, four metal 2nd Ed beaky flamers, a shitty metal LoC, a metal changeling, and like 5 metal screamers. I'd really need a tzeentch SC box for AoS if not more.
>>
>>53207600
Continuing.

Immediately this guy points at me and starts telling the head that I am unjustly accusing him of cheating because he is beating my list. I explain that all I did was ask him to make his rolls in the open. The head just tells the guy to make the rolls out in the open. He quits saying all this has spoiled his mood and leaves with his army.

I talked to one of the guys who played the same dude earlier that day and apparently he was pulling the same bullshit. We both brought this up to the head guy and I guess he is gonna have a talk with this dude.

Has anyone else have games like these? Or just some THAT GUY stories?
>>
>>53207644
not so intense as that (or 40k) but I once wiped approx 1/3 of an skaven army off the board on turn 1 with a mega purple sun of xereus down his battle line

>>
>>53207607
DPs and Horrors are both excellent units, but they do have negative synergy with each other when done in excessive amounts because they steal from the same Lore of Change. Depends how many Flamers but that's actually a rather good start.

1x LOC, 1x Changeling, 1x DPoT, 3x Horrors, 1x Flamers, 2x Screamers makes a playable, if not exactly ideal list.

The amount of bullshit a Lord of Change throws out is criminal, I really want one.

(Lets call That Guy John)
I am pretty new to this shop I play, but after speaking to a few people, no one really likes this guy but as far as everyone knows, this shop is his only hang out spot plus he blows all his pay checks at this place so the owner wants to keep him around.

I was talking to one of the major painters, one of the few guys who really goes all out painting his minis (and it really does show.) He told me whatever you do, don't touch John's models. Sure it's annoying to have people touch your shit without asking, but John will act like you committed a cardinal sin. Which is weird cause his army is never painted except for whatever he gets commissioned by dudes who charge enough to break the bank. But John will touch everyone's models without asking. Painter Bro told me on more than one occasion John has gone to his table, lifted one of his models off the board, looked at it and put it back (at the wrong spot) saying "looks good."
>>
>>53207788

Ideal would be to use Arcanites, specifically Tzaangors, to bulk up the force and to stay far, far away from Screamers as they're dogshit.

7 flamers is better than I thought, that's two units. That's a ton of firepower. I love burning chariots but Flamers are honestly probably better considering you should be avoiding melee with them anyway, I just like how Chariots give you more movement freedom as well as capability in melee.

Rule of 1 did totally neuter horrors, but getting access to the Disciples of Tzeentch psychic lore to actually give them powers besides their one-of bolt and shield gave them a new lease on life, now they're excellent battleline units.

>Aren't autists supposed to have a strong sense of justice?

Not exactly. Autists have a strong sense of everyone having to follow rules. I work at a high school in a special ed department, and autistic kids will constantly come up to me during recess and such with things like "Timmy is listening to music without headphones". That's a rule we have because some of our kids get sensory overload and having to listen to someone else's music really annoys them. Or I'll be in class and if the teacher says "No talking" and someone talks, and the teacher says nothing, the autistic kids will really get on edge, because the rules aren't being followed.

Now, the key here is that autistic people don't pick up on social rules. Unstated ones, like "Don't pick up someone else's mini without asking them first." "Don't stare at a chick's tits openly." "Don't loudly talk about sex in the middle of a crowded shop filled with customers and children.".

This is exacerbated by the attitude some gamers have of "I have no social skills, but now I'm in this space with other people who also don't have social skills, so I don't need to develop social skills." Because autistic people can very much learn social skills. You just don't learn them automatically like most people do during early development. The kids I work with, by the time they graduate from Grade 12 are, for the most part, quite socially well adjusted. But too many gamers think they don't have to try.

Taking full advantage of the Cadian's many, many, MANY, MAAAANY different parts and bits and sculpts to build some new "thematic" squads. First up: A walking wounded squad. Then I'll do a PCS whose theme I haven't decided yet, and then a squad of grenadiers throwing grenades. After building four generic riflemen squads I figured I'd need to get creative or else fall into the same rut most guard players and non-cadian guard in particular fall into: That of endless, souless batch-painting of the same 12 dudes over and over and over again.

Then I got to work on my techpriests: I got a metal sculpt techpriest in the mail and boy is he tiny! Gotta convert some tempestus scions into servitors, build a new Leman Russ or Chimera, and then the final remaining chimera or Russ. And then, after all that, I need to finish simple greening my first batch of Cadians and repaint that generic rifle squad.

It's gunna be a while before my store makes any model money off me. Too much backlog! AAAH!

Except it's not exactly free if you're paying points and Warp Charge to pull off said summons in the first place. It's called opportunity cost. Unless you have a proper plan for such, plus the actual momentum in summoning new units is generally outpaced by the amount of dakka in your average 40k game.

Free units are a legitimate mechanic for some armies, and have been part of 40k for quite some time now (Without Number Tyranids, Chenkov Conscripts, Tervigons, etc). Usually these end up not actually being as powerful as they'd appear, simply because creating chaff ends up not helping you actually kill your foe.

Now, some other changes could be done of course. Make Sacrifice a 2 WC power, require players to declare what they want to summon before they attempt to manifest a power, make GSC summons roll a D3 (instead of a D6) on the Cult Ambush table, etc. But removing summoning altogether cuts deep, especially when the alternative is a game of "can I bubblewrap, hide in a corner, or max my null and go second?"

My players have found a TON of charge packs for their weapons. We haven't worked out the weight on it yet as their still on a transport, I'm going to limit it to their carry capacity, but one of my players wants to make IEDs from some of them.

That is the case NOW. But by the looks of it it's very doubtfull that will still be the case next edition.

Also, the argument that you need to be able to summon in thousands of free points to stand a chance against the cheese armies is a poor one. That's like saying you need to be paralized because otherwise you'll feel the cancer.

So assuming the tau thing of overwatch when a nearby army gets charged remains, is there any legit way to get a melee character into combat with them?

They can't join a unit, so they have to make their own charge.
Overwatch isn't limited to one per turn, so charging with the bulky unit first wont help.
There's the 3' consolidation, but that requires you to have your IC already there, basically.

Am I missing something obvious?

Yes it does because you resolve charges one at a time and once they're locked in combat they can't overwatch anymore.

Also if the character isn't the closest unit they literally cannot shoot him at all.

Tau, at is stands, don't have to be the unit getting charged though, right? I think it's 12' range?
So you'll have units not locked in combat around that are able to over watch.

Also, it specifically states that they can't shoot them if they're not the closest during the shooting phase.
>To counter the fact that these Characters cannot join units and “hide” from enemy fire, there is a rule in the Shooting phase that means you can’t target a Character unless they are the closest enemy model.
I assumed this meant in other phases they could still be targeted.
>>
>>53209608
6" range.

Good call about specifically mentioning the shooting phase, though.

My guess is that supporting fire, unlike normal Overwatch, WILL only be limited to once per phase.
>>
>>53209380

There are stats in one of the games for overcharging a Las pack and detonating it. Use that.
>>
>>53209604
If you want, when crafting them, if the player(s) fail by 3-5 degrees or more, it explodes in their face for half damage. Failing by 1 degree makes it useless but salvageable. Failing by 2 makes it completely useless.

That'd be the easiest way, but all it requires is foregoing it a few turns and their character still can't make it to melee range.
I'm pretty sure it was even said you have to charge to get to melee, so you can't just walk up a turn or two later.

Well, for comparison, Eldar Jetbikes and Space Marine bikes would both be putting out 4 shots themselves, while having 3+ BS isntead of 5+

6 shots is 2 S5 hits for an Ork, compared to the ~3 S4 hits a Marine/Eldar would be getting. Granted, they also have to get a bit closer to do so, but they'll also probably end up with faster bikes so it evens out.

Lowering it by 1 to make it 4 shots would just be shitty.

Getting my gorkanaut done
>>
>>53210607
Oh, neat - I've never seen anyone attempt a conversion for one. How's yours look?
>>
>>53211087
By the power of butthurt, I have gained clairvoyance!
>>
>>53211122
I had zero interest in the gorkanaut until playing dow 3, oddly enough. Now I actually really want one.

Yours looks great! I really like the scratch marks you've edged in there.

What do I buy next for my Orks? I know 8th is coming and we don't have our faction preview yet, but my playgroup is still hammering out games and I want to get non-proxy models on the table for once.
My current collection consists of a Warboss, Big Mek, Painboy, 1 unit of Gretchin, literal piles of Boyz, Trukks to ferry them everywhere, several units of Nobz, and a box each of Stormboyz, Lootas, Warbikers and Mek Gunz
From some of the preview articles mentioning "more dakka" for orks, I'm leaning on getting more Lootas/Dakkajet/Bikes or investing in specialist units like Burnas/Tankbustas/Kommandos.
What would the resident Ork players of /tg/ recommend for expanding a footslogging Ork army?
>>
Where do you get the motivation to paint, guys? I enjoy it as much as I can, but I'm having trouble finding the balance between it being a hobby and a chore. It's so time consuming, which is the real thing that holds me back I think.
>>
>>53211234
I listen to audio books or watch slow tv shows while i paint.
>>
>>53211234
If you have a large backlog, try not to think about how much there is to paint. It gets much easier when you've got a lot done behind you.

Push away everything but the one unit you're focusing on, pick something you really want to see painted and have painted and get in there. Enjoy making it, then put it on the table and enjoy using it. Use the boost of pleasure you gain from fielding your newly painted dood to move to your next goal... and so on and so on.

Setting up games with friends in the future in which you plan on using something you want to have painted is also a good way of setting a deadline for a unit.
>>
>>53211234
I get motivation from the fact that actually enjoy painting, albeit I use gundam markers which makes everything a hell of a lot easier since I do only one-two layers base and then highlights/details which saves me a shitload of time
>>
>>53211229
There's nothing to recommend at this point. We don't know what's going to change.

Thousands is hyperbolic, especially in the scope of the average 1850-point game. You need 2x-1 WC for coinflip odds for each summon you wish to pull off, so an average of 6 Warp Charge for each unit you do reliably summon. At best, you can get 22.5 Warp Charge per point, and that's only if you're running *nothing* but Heralds Anarchic. 41 Heralds, to be precise. At best, 18 Heralds under ITC restrictions (no more than one duplicate detachment).

Let's be realistic now. A stereotypical Flying Circus (Oracles or War Sect) tops off at 14 to 18 Warp Charge, most which go towards Flickerfires. You get a trickle of units in each turn, but most the stuff goes towards defensive blessings or Magnus attacks. You're maybe summoning one or two units tops a turn, and the game is usually decided well before you've summoned 500 points (if that).

But sure, all-summon armies were broken. Not Barkstars+Greenwing, Ordnance Tyrants, or Scatpacks with Riptide Wings.

Wanted to show some of my WIP with my Deathwatch. Still need to do edge highlighting on the black panels (I know, I should've done that right after priming) and the gold parts, but I'm pleased by how it looks so far.

Are there any m41 era chapters who are noted to extensively use Mk. III armour?
>>
>>53211229
I think both Dakkajets and Burnaboyz have been cited in articles so they should be safe bets.
I guess you could also just buy things you want to play/paint/convert.
>>
>>53211337
Not officially
>Mark III was never intended to replace the previous Mark but to act as an optional suit specialised for situations where heavier frontal protection would be advantageous, such as in the close confines of spacecraft and mining complexes. Because of this, no Legion was ever fully equipped with the Mark III. While successful in the conditions it was designed for, the armour is too clumsy and uncomfortable for conventional fighting. It is sometimes worn by ceremonial guards due to its visual brutality, and can also still be found used in close-quarters situations by various Space Marine Chapters.

what are some good plastic or resin bases that don't cost too much? I've been using the plastic GW bases since with a little love they can look OK, but I am getting tired of them.

Secret weapon has some nice bases, but they are 1.50 USD each - three times the cost of GW bases!

>only Howling Banshees
>ALMOST always strike first
like anon said, stop spreading bullshit, Eldar aren't getting an universal "strike first" rule
>>
>>53211441

I bought the urban bases from chinamanZ and they're actually pretty fantastic.
>>
>>53211444
Personally, I interpreted it as
>the Banshees have ASF, but when they are fighting against another unit with ASF like daemonettes or tyranids with the wip, they cancel each other
>>
>>53211489
Could be anything, from your interpretation to "when charged roll a d6, on 3+(2+?) you go first", to "even if your models are killed in a charge they can strike in this round of combat before being removed". Could also be something else entirely.
And it doesn't change the fact that only Banshees are confirmed to have the rule.
>>
>>53211328
Post in /wip/ we always need fresh blood, as long as you're not thin skinned about criticism anyway. Looks solid as a start.
>>
>>53211327
>But sure, all-summon armies were broken. Not Barkstars+Greenwing, Ordnance Tyrants, or Scatpacks with Riptide Wings.
Deathstars are nerfed, riptide wings are gone, scatpacks have been acknowledged OP so will probably be nerfed/expensive, so it's hardly like summon spam is being nerfed in isolation. An across the board "no units without paying for them" rule can only be good for balance.

A thing I never really understood was the real necessary of the Wolves in the, well, Wolfstar
It seemed to me that their only point was bringing relatively cheap S10 into deathstar attacks and nothing else. Most of the job was done by the Black Knights bikers and the Librarius Conclave.
It wouldn't be as effective, but a DA HQ with a Thunder Hammer would have done the same job almost as well, since in most cases S8 and S10 have really negligible differences.

Is there something I'm missing? Because the name implies that the wolves are the center of that strategy, which I don't see how
>>
What are your expectations for Necrons monoliths? No doubt they'll see love and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they get an update soon
>>
>>53211860
Perhaps so. Since my main army is Word Bearers (pic related), I really want to see how they handle their 8e bonuses. If they simply revert to "oh, you can take Possessed as Troops", without at least adding Mara Ghal dreads, there's little to actually get me interested in this edition. Given the consolidated Psyker system that's already in place, I'm feeling pretty confident that the Scrolls of Magnus are getting axed, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Chaos Boon chart became 2d6 instead of a d66 (personally, I miss the 3.5 dex letting you buy Daemon Mutations, but there's a certain charm in trying to power up your heroes too). All which would reduce some random and arguably lead to a more streamlined game, but at this point am I really playing a Chaos army?

I do agree there should be mechanics to limit summoning, but making it "points taken from the rest of your army" skews summons from being a "board prescence" tool towards being a "nullhammer" tool. In a game which already has a lot of nullhammer (the aforementioned Scatpacks, Warp Spiders, GSC, etc), something about it feels grotesque.

As for points, I've always felt that there are "some" situations where free points are worth considering. Nobody ever took Searchlights or Smoke Launchers when they were optional upgrades for example, and the DE vehicles have *lots* of 5-point upgrades that never see the cost of day. In an earlier homebrew rewrite, I experimented with the idea that each unit could choose one of 3 "special issue loadouts" pregame for free. Things that were usable but were so niche/cornercase (Cluster Mines, Auxiliary Grenade Launchers, Bonding Knives for non-Farsight armies, etc) that nobody ever paid points for them in regular games.
>>
>>53211990
Originally, it was the relatively cheap S10. When Curse of the Wulfen came out, the Thunderwolves were replaced with Azrael and the Fenrisian Hunting Pack formation, hence the Barkbarkstar. Lots (meaning 50) of Marine-statline beasts with 4++ and FNP, each at 8 points per model.

>>

>I'm going to base my 8E hate on inconclusive evidence

We don't know the full story of vehicles yet. Armor facing might still be a part of the game where a vehicle taking fire on its front armor will recieve a bonus to its armor save to counter high penetration weapons e.g Front facing is a +2 while side is +1. This would enforce GW's idea of needing the right tools for the job where a lascannon is still 3+ to wound but the Russ still gets a 4+ armor save disregarding cover bonuses.
>>
>>53211990
>>53212042

>S10

You mean S9.
>>
>>53212209
I have my doubts this will be a thing. People bitch and moan that determining armor facings "slows down the game". They're making people use "the right tools for the job" with high numbers of wounds only realistically being taken down by multi-damage weapons.
>>
>>53212286
Those people are morons. It takes 5 seconds to determine armor facing by using your tape or handy dandy line laser to split your model on the diagonal.
>>
>>53212307
I know, but the intention atm seems to be to boil the game down to "can you shoot y/n, if so then shoot".
>>
>>53212307
Well the 40k tanks (bar the FW variants) already look like toys so you might as well treat them as toys.
>>
>>53212273
They released the FAQ about that
It's S10
>>
>>53212369
But we all know it's really S9 famalam cause we can read a rulebook and comprehend it as written.
>>
>>53211489
ASF is an USR, so probably not. Every unit has to have unique rules now, so they can't interact and cancel out or anything.

Best case scenario, there's some standard rule that works like seizing the initiative, allowing units that have been charged to turn the tables. The unit bespoke rules then give a bonus to the roll or something, so they can interact without spelling out how each rule works with each other rule.
>>
>>53212391
Not really a gr8 b8, and it's also really old

I'll concede you this (You), now go and create new baits
>>
>>53212396
We would have two rules that would allow you to go first at the same time
I think it wouldn't be so difficult to add a little paragraph at the end of the unit activation portion of the rules saying something like "if two units fighting each other both have rules that would make them hit first or last, the two rules cancel each other and the units will be activated like normal" or something like that

However this are all speculations,
so it doesn't really matter
>>
>>53211340
>I think both Dakkajets and Burnaboyz have been cited in articles so they should be safe bets.

As in, they aren't getting removed from the game? No citadel miniatures which are currently sold are getting removed from the game.

Or did you mean they will be good because GW marketing told you they would be good? That seems unlikely.

Most likely scenario: all ork units continue to be trash, might as well buy what you like the look of.

Also possible: GW actually fixed the game balance, most units are fairly even in power level, might as well buy what you like the look of.

>>53211229
If there aren't any kits which grab you with their aesthetics, maybe a blitza bomma to manage vehicles might be the way to go?
>>
>>53212172
