Not really, but I thought I enjoy painting odd stuff. Some of the old 1987 Space Orks are really cool, high detail models. I own the Epicast Falcon Grav-Tank because it is so terrible (not the look, but the sculpting and casting quality... it's like the sculptor carver it out of soft cheese).

finally finished my test model for brotherhood of darkness (obscure night lords subfaction from 4th edition CSM codex), shit phone cam but I got nothing else ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ also I've stripped this dude like 10 times by now with non-acetone nail polish remover so it's starting to fuck up the plastic, it's fine once or twice but more than that can get bad

now I'm trying to figure out what kind of base to go with, I'm thinking just GW texture paints with usual wash/drybrush but I'm open to ideas. would like to get something really special going for these guy's bases, but I can't think of anything unique but still simple enough that I don't have to use cork etc.

wtf those possessed are nice except for the arms, are you high? have you seen some of the other GW monstrosities from the 80s/90s? hell those possessed would look okay today except for the goofy arms
>>
>>53143328
Lol are you joking? they look horrid, they all need at the very least 25% of the model completely gone and replaced with other bits to look good. Though I will say that guy who posted them did a pretty wonderful job painting them, his don't look near as bad as the eavy metal (or whatever) GW ones they advertised on release.
>>
>>53143475
the armor itself looks pretty solid, and some of the other bits like the devil guy's face doesn't look bad. it's mostly the arms and other doofy organic parts. the green guy's torso looks alright too.
>>
>>53143127
>now I'm trying to figure out what kind of base to go with, I'm thinking just GW texture paints with usual wash/drybrush but I'm open to ideas. would like to get something really special going for these guy's bases, but I can't think of anything unique but still simple enough that I don't have to use cork etc.
I recently saw some pretty nice resin bases called 'ritual' by Dragon Forge Design I believe.
I think they were designed to pander to word bearers from the GW HH boardgame, but they would fit the whole runic theme really well.

You can of course cast some plaster plates, inscribe them with runes and them smash them to basing appropriate sizes too.
>>
>>53143475
I feel like gw doesn't flatter it's own sculpts...kind if a lot.

The dark eldar hellions, csm, and AOs fyreslayers are pretty great looking kits but look like complete ass in their gallery.
>>
So wip, I want to work with enamels. Can I start with an enamel base then do regular acrylics over that?

I've got the rest of the basics like ventilation etc.

if you're talking about these, they're from wayland games. problem is they're 30mm, and rounded lip. I also checked out dragon forge designs, cool stuff there is well.

but I'm trying to keep it simple and get a squad done this week so I don't really want to go buying resin bases and waiting for delivery etc., I figure I just want to paint something on or use sand. I'm thinking GW armageddon dust texture paint most likely now.

does anybody know what that brownish color GW uses to paint their base rims is?
>>
>>53143631
yeah sorry for the confusion.
They're Secret Weapon Miniatures
http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=79_30_148
You can get them with beveled edge too though.
Wayland games is just a store, they don't actually make anything afaik.

Can't really help you with the colors, sorry.
>>
>>53143846
>Wayland games is just a store

I feel like I knew that already but somehow didn't at the time. Thanks for that link though, those 25mm shattered ritual bases are indeed good. Might use them for my daemons, I'm planning on getting a daemon detachment going eventually so I could use those ritual bases for them to show they were summoned or whatever (even though night lords hate chaos and presumably daemons, I guess this could be one of brotherhood of darkness's differences from their legion, since there's not much fluff on them anyway so nothing contradicts it.)
>>
>>53143919
>Night lords hate chaos

Is it possible to have a faction of Chaos Space Marines that despise chaos and want to subjugate it and steal its power without giving glory to any of the gods? Personal fluff making question in regards to a possible Chaos Space Marine Warband made up of marines obsessed with binding daemons to engines and weapons in order to control them for their own nefarious goals
>>
>>53143982
>Is it possible to have a faction of Chaos Space Marines that despise chaos and want to subjugate it and steal its power without giving glory to any of the gods?
This more or less is Abbadon.
The guy has been crusading for hundreds of years and hasn't sprouted tentacles yet or became a demonprince.
>>
>>53143982
There was already such a chapter. The Sons of Malice from the 3rd edition codex. Malice (aka Malal in fantasy) was the chaos god of anarchy and paradoxically anti-chaos (at least against the big four) but he got retconned due to some dispute with the creator who was working for GW at the time, iirc. I tried painting up a Sons of Malice warband but man that quartered black and white scheme is time consuming.

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Sons_of_Malice

>That the Sons of Malice are known to only rarely be supported in battle by daemons is also considered relevant to their religious practices. It has been noted, however, that on those rare occasions that daemons have appeared alongside the Chapter, they appear to be of those types already documented by the Imperium (Bloodletters or Plaguebearers, etc.) but have been chastised or bound, and they often wear the distinctive black and white livery of the Sons.

Also I adore the Black Legion and was tempted to paint em up but I hate Abbaddons model and despise that GW haven't updated it. Is it possible to make a fluffy company of the black legion or is it impossible? I'm meaning more fluffy as in

>>
>>53144068
read the dang codex my dude, or at least wikis. black legion has a bunch of subfactions, with many of them headed by characters you could convert onto the tabletop. there are various black legion factions including one for each of the chaos gods (such as the Hounds of Abaddon, dedicated to khorne) and the oath broken, etc. you can very much make a fluffy black legion company equivalent.
>>
>>53144068
You'll just have to do some research to find a date and a place where they fought.
If you are lucky you'll find a name too, otherwise just come up with something and say that your dude was the dude fighting there.

>>
>>53147125
I recommend only using typhis corrosion as an accent. Too much and it looks like you just left your model in mud. I like when it's used with downward strokes to create the illusion of gravity, and Ryza Rust makes a good additional highlight.
>>
>>53147261
You can also give an edge highlight of stormhost silver to make it look like its been rubbed against and the corrosion has been rubbed off.
>>
>>53147261
>ruza rust

Gotta add that to my shopping list
Right after more water bottles
>>
>>53147334
Just remember that Ryza Rust needs to be dry-brushed onto Typhus Corrosion to really achieve a realistic rust effect. And the Typhus Corrosion needs to be completely dry before using the Ryza Rust, too, because you don't want to accidentally brush off the pumice in the Typhus Corrosion.

I'm working on a unit of Nurgle Ogres and could use some suggestions/ideas on how to build the remaining three. With the exception of the champion I'll probably leave them relatively gift-free allthough I might add some boils to the right side of the musician's torso to make it more interesting. Anons, help me out a bit.

I've recently been going through a bit of a rough patch mentally and that, mixed with batch painting a buncha infantry coupled with my OCD, might have given me burnout.

I have 2 models left to convert (a kroot shaper and a ghostkeel) and I honestly don't feel like working on them at all. And I've done some fantastic progress, I managed to paint, to a good standard, like 1500 points of my entire army in about a month and a half. I used to paint 5 models A YEAR but come March some strange second wind took me and I went balls deep with the brush.

I just basecoated my last 9 infantry models and even though it's only been about a week and a half since I painted something, it felt like I'm not even there, like the act of painting was alien to me and I didn't know what I was doing and constantly fighting the urge to say "fuck it, I'll go do something else" for an hour and a half.

Help me. Some logical words to give me perspective or whatever, I want to actually finish my army. The final steps and then I don't have to do shit for about 2-3 months for my Thousand Sons.

so the problem is that you have two colours that are very similar to one another so everything looks 2D.

You need to break up the flat surfaces with either how GW did it back in the past with entwined thorned vines in lets say a black or dark green. Or you can go with some eldar runes supersized to draw the eye to the rune as opposed to the purple/pink. The curves and geometry of the runes go really well with the shape of the Falcon itself. Which is why most people do that.

On some of the gemstones/oval lumps I would recommend a silver as a spot colour to break it up even more and to give the feeling of something more mechanical than just a floating pastel with guns.

A third option is to paint the panels on the front part of the falcon a black or blend a dark green in. Then alternate and paint every other panel on the falcon the same way. This could be even done with a pink but then you risk making the falcon look like a barbie toy. with guns.

Hope this helps.

Sup /wip/, just got my hands on about sixteen of these little plastic corner piece things from work, Marine next to them for scale. They were used to keep a package from being damaged in transit. I wanna make them into terrain somehow and I don't know how I wanna do it. I was thinking I could cut little sight holes in the sides of them and use them as little pile bunkers, or lay them so the points are facing up like giant concrete road pylons. I probably have enough to do both honestly but if anyone has some other ideas throw em at me.

Seriously though, I can't get a good picture where I am to save my life.
>>
>>53153988
There is nothing wrong with painting stuff separately.
The issue with painting on the sprue is that you'll have to get them off the sprue eventually and then it's a hassle to get it cleaned up and paint over the areas of unprimed plastic you've now got showing.
>>
>>53153988
um, what. I've not seen people painting on sprue here. I've seen painting pieces individually on sticks and blue tack, but not sprue. When you have to take the piece off the sprue you are going to do a lot of cleaning up on the connection spots.
>>
>>53153988
>Is that a bad idea?
not the guy you were talking to but generally speaking I'd say yes.
You have no way to remove the moldlines properly on the sprue and once you cut off the sprue nubs you'll have to repeat several steps of painting depending on what you used.
A quick touchup with a base and wash doesn't sound like much, but when you have to do it for 50 models in 10 different places each you might reconsider that.

Imo you are just making it more difficult for yourself. And you'll end up with more moldlines, which are a terrible eyesore on miniatures.
Doing it on pieces you don't have to clean up like the old Leman Russ track sprue is fine.
Doing it for an infantry model seems like a lot of extra work.

Invest in some poster tack. Stuff's sold in walmarts near the craft section last I remembered. It lasts for literally years, leaves no residue and holds parts to another part easily for working out poses before assembly or painting individual pieces or even entire minis without having to hold them by the model or base. I put a small piece on a wine cork and just stick my dudes on it by the base and get to rotate them however I need without my hands getting in the way.
>>
>>53154414
my advice for getting a nice cream colour is Rakarth Flesh as a base coat and then gradually add a lighter cream colour on top.
>>53154435
I'll be honest with you, it's a bit of a mess, you need to go back over all those areas where you've got random splotches of paint from other areas.
That being said I do like the scheme, once you get stuff neatened up a bit it'll look loads better.

aw dammit. I think I done goofed.

so I was thinking I would just use generic GW-style base because it seems to look good with anything. GW box art black templars have bases like pic related so I thought it would be good for my dudes, but now I'm thinking the problem is the red and black don't mesh well with that brown base. doesn't seem like a place for an evil space marine to stand, it looks kinda goofy?

I prefer snow bases myself. The white gives a lot of contrast that makes your dudes pop and snow flock is surprisingly easy to work with. Plus, I just like snow. It also helps to just base them on where they come from - I fluffed my guys to be from a snow planet, but if yours are from a desert world sand would be better. Actually, fine sand like a desert wouldn't look too bad with your marine there, if that one's yours.

that snow looks good on that khorne marine but eh, I always feel weird about snow bases on an otherwise snow-free gaming board, I guess it's just my personal autism. it breaks my immersion a bit, I can deal with sand bases on a rocky board, but seeing a snow base on a lava game board or anywhere that isn't cold really activates my autism. as for the home world, this warband is an old night lords subfaction from the 4th edition codex, but I think they just fly around in their ship since they split off from night lords, not much lore on them.

the next thing I'm gonna try tonight at least is astrogranite since I already have some from an old project, according to the GW painting guide you need

>astrogranite texture paint
>drakenhoff nightshade wash
>longbeard gray dry paint

I don't have longbeard, and the picture on the GW site looks weird, wtf gray is this supposed to be? does anybody happen to have longbeard gray and could tell me what it's similar to? I might just be able to drybrush one of the paints I already have if it's close to longbeard, is there a layer paint equivalent or something?
>>
>>53155239
I don't think it looks that bad...
If you want something more sinister consider using burned grass instead.
Trading in the healthy brown for a darker less saturated shade would also a towards that.

A black/grey/urban base would probably not look great for them imo, cause the main color of them already is black.
With snow basing you got a really nice contrast, but you fall into the black/red/white color combo trap that tends to look a bit boring, imo.
Desert would also be a nice contrast, but might not suit your vision of dudes lurking in the shadows. The runes kind of imply darkness since they glow.
So I could see a swamp or toxic sludge base work for them as well.

Another thing to consider might be to just stay with the theme you have now, but get rid of the grass and instead add some tiny craters on your bases, blackened with soot and strewn with empty shells. Could be a kind of a in the middle of the battlefield thing.
You can also just put them on space hulk/industrial basing. That way you also get a darker theme.

you can use whatever you used to drybrush the other base.
Just has to be lighter than the astrogranite.
>>
>>53155874
You can drybrush with literally any paint you can get your hands on. GW has had a bone color in their range for as long as they had their own paint range.

The only thing the dry paints make easier is wiping the excess paint off your brush. There is literally no other reason to buy them then being too lazy to wipe some paint off.

Just saying.

The official guide recommends to use Stormvermin Fur to edge highlight Skavenblight Dinge, though there are multiple ways you can go depending on what kind of end result you're looking for.
If you're new and unsure, I'd stick with what recommended though until you get your bearings.

I can see a mould line on the arm, remember to remove them all for best looking results. You've done the flesh nicely especially for a beginner. But on the shoulder pad the paint is a little too thick, remember to water down all your paints the thinner the better, because even if you apply it too thin it's a lot easier to reverse.
Also you can use the colour wheel to find colours that go well together. Definitely a solid start never the less keep painting and have fun doing it.

Holy shit, I had rock bottom expectations and I'm STILL let down. These are almost unusable they're so bad, and that's not even considering the fact I planned to use these as master for recasting. Just slapping 'em straight onto a normal marine is all but out of the question.

Fucking finecast, not even once.

Yes, this down layer paints and bases paints. Drybrushes, washes, texture, and technical paints should be used without being thinned though.

>but that also means I won't have money coming in which is much worse than not having enough time for boyz
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. That does suck, anon. Maybe try working on models that don't require a monetary investment while you line something else up?
>>

>Maybe try working on models that don't require a monetary investment
Fortunately I'm overloaded with models at this point so it doesn't matter. Hell I've even bought more paint of my main color a month back so I'm good on the paint front for some time as well.

It's not the threat of impending financial solvency that worries me so much as the insecurity of not having a steady income filling or at least keeping my savings sustainable. In all likelihood I'm just freaking out needlessly but it's too important for me not to think about.
>>
>>53157099
The plastic deathwatch kit comes with a flesh tearer shoulder pad, it'd probably be cheap enough to buy one from a bits seller/ebay might be suitable for you to cast from.

>>53157099
Send a picture back to get customer service, they are really good at replacing shitty casts.
>>

>they are really good at replacing shitty casts.
I think it's just the age of the mold. The cast isn't too bad, all things considered, it's just that the mold isn't on par with those today. You can definitely tell this guys are recasts of hand-carved masters rather than the product of some CAD program.
It doesn't meant they're bad, it's just that they won't really fit with any of my marines due to clashing styles.

The finecast is still bumpy and quite uneven, but not enough so that I'd feel right requesting a replacement.

>>53157149
>The plastic deathwatch kit comes with a flesh tearer shoulder pad

Already checked around on ebay. Lowest price for a buy-it-now is more than 1/3 the total price of the whole kit for some fucking reason and there's surprising little in terms of actual auctions too.
Might just buy the fucking DW kit just for the shoulder pad. God I hope these sorry fucks are better in 8e than they are in 7e...

Why did my friend have to use the shoulder pad he got from Death Masque on his own dudes. He hasn't even run them in a game since he got them. I would'a traded him a fucking lot of bitz for just that one.

I have a bit of a conundrum with my CSM. I'm magnetizing shit, and I realized I'm going to need shoulders for my termies. Berserker arms are fantastic for holding combi-weapons, but I'll need shoulders for them unless I just stick normal shit on there for maximum swapability.

I dunno if having dark green directly upon the purple paneling would look good.

As for the bumbs and gemstones, I was thinking of making them green.

Honestly though, I just don't know if I can make the scheme work.
Picture related is the first Eldar I painted in it, and I didn't put any actual thought to it and kept making more and more eldar in it.

Fuck, I dunno what I should do. The thing is that I want to make them look like the materials etc their stuff is made out of is alien of origin, and I don't know how. Seeing DoW 3 trailer gave me an impression of what wraithbone looks like that stuck with me, and made me hate my own eldar.

Minotaurs, actually. Followed the Duncan guide and did it all with Balthasar Gold, then some shading with Agrax Gloss (but that's hard to see, and I'm not sure if regular Agrax Eartshade wouldn't be better if I just go into the recesses, and not all over the miniature) and for highlights Runelords Brass, but as an edge highlight instead of drybrushing. A bit of Stormhost Silver for the most prominent edges. Shoulderpads with Khorne Red for base and Evil Sunz Scarlet for the edges, but in natural light it looks a bit to bright imo. And I guess they could use some shading where appropriate. Nuln Oil or that red shade, Crimson something?

Just some snow flock I picked up at Michael's. There's a trick to using it. You mix some of it with glue and water to make a kind of slurry, and then I used a popsicle stick to put it where I wanted it, using the stick to disturb it so it looks more natural and trodden. Then here's the trick - you sprinkle some dry snow flock on top of it while it's drying. This gives it that powdery look.

Hope that helps. Sorry for the late response - had to sleep.

Help /wip.

I sprayed my work with matte varnish and the orange on the base of one of the zombies got swollen. You can see the orange mark on his foot where the paint from the base reached right after spraying.

I used this varnish half a year go on 30 other minis without any problems. Other 9 I sprayed today also look fine.

What may be the cause?
Poor priming on the base?
Too thick layer of orange? - I took a shortcut here by not thinning the paint much.

It is not a gaming varnish thou, rather a no name brand for acrylics in overall, but as I mentioned did not cause anything like that before.

I was 4 years old in 1994. Are you mad because some criticised your shitty faces? Trying to defend the critique by making ad hominem insults? Really makes you think
>>
>>53161266
Critique implies you give feedback as to why it's bad, you just shit posted.
If you want you can apologize and try to fix your mistakes

Listen, my critique said that those faces were pure shite. There is enough tutorials even in the OP that should show you how to thin paints and not make them look like they just had sunstroke, faggot. You are so far up your own ass that you can't see the simple fact that you just spent dollars and made them look like shit? Gee, if you are such an oldfag it's time to get into nursing home, because those hands seem all shaky pal.

cri·tique/kriˈtēk/
noun

a detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory.

>those look like shit.
Doesnt seem like critique to me, seems like shitposting.
I'll ask you again, tell me why it's bad, and don't say "read the op" since I've been reading those painting guides since it's infancy and I've had multiple people in this thread ask me how I paint eyes and faces.
It's like been like 4 threads of this shit, do I know you? There's no need to be so mad.
>>
>>53161266
>ad hominem insults
>ad hominem
>insults
Pick one.

No horse in this race, but I wish kids would stop using 'ad hominem' every time someone insulted them. It doesn't make you seem intelligent The argumentum ad hominem is a logical fallacy that may be applied to devalue arguments that attempt to attack a valid point by pointing out flaws in the person of the opponent. Whereas an insult is an insult. You cockgobbling fuckfence.

>Seeing DoW 3 trailer gave me an impression of what wraithbone looks like that stuck with me

Yeah me too, it made me want to try and start a Beksiński inspired Eldar army but I couldn't work out how to get the armour to look organic enough. I considered painting tiny lines of liquid greenstuff to build texture but never got around to it.

Would require a shitton of work doing it that way probably.

I myself just got a desire to make the Eldar armor etc look more organic.

i painted a layer of Typhus Corrosion to get a bit of a gritty later, and then a thin layer of Tamiya sand texture paint over that in a slightly smaller area. then i clumped on tamiya soil texture (thats the lumpy stuff you see)
that done, i washed the sand layer with a green shade to give it that vibrant look, then the lumpy bits i painted caliban green and washed those green as well. lastly i drybrushed a lighter, neutral tone green for a highlight and addd drops of water effects and grass bits.
it was an experimental technique and im glad it just worked.
hope this helps :)
>>
>>53162263
Sadly I don't have any of the texture paints you mentioned.. but I think if adding a tiny bit of grit like actual sand (a very light flat layer) would do the trick?

That's some beautiful stuff.
>>
>>53162144

>It wouldnt be such a hassle if this shit was cheaper.
you gotta put it into perspective.
Think about how much a miniature costs in relation to a movie ticked and how many hours of entertainment you can get out of it.
Helps me usually.
Especially if you compare it to sports related goods.
>>
>>53162310
actual sand might be a bit big, unless you had modelling sand.. otherwise, i think the tamiya paints are about twenty bucks each, but you could use battlemire of that dust paint from the gw range if you had them
>>
>>53160398

That's pretty cool, I presume you're using old rules as she's not in the current codex?
>>
>>53162366
Nope, just regular beach sand. Shit. Gonna have to just go for it I guess. Can't find anything on google other than "use actual moss" or "base it like you normally would, it'll look good"
>>
>>53157450
No,its AK interactive grime streaks for yellow vehicles. You just bath the models in that shit and before it dries, you clean it with a cloth. Its a really lazy way to get shadows.

Thank god for recasters cause ill never pay full retail for those fancy mech/tank models despite really wanting them.
>>
>>53161967
Eyes need to be done, I'd match them to whatever colour you going to do the glow.
the fungus growing on one of the head branches is a great opportunity to add some more colour to things.
The leaves could do with a bit more contrast, at the moment the sort of muted tone they are blends in too much with the bark
>>
>>53160204
Thanks anon.
Nothing fancy, you just dip thick red, orange and yellow at the same time. If you search on youtube how to do smoke markers, you will find the tutorial, and see how easy it is, and how bad are mine.

Started my first actual guys (Before I was just painting one piece models) frostgrave soldiers.

Should I glue them first and then deal with the mold lines? I'm trying to do it right away but find it rather a struggle to hold AND scratch tiny head at the same time.
>>
>>53163333
>Should I glue them first and then deal with the mold lines?

I usually clean all parts of my kits before dryfitting and then gluing it together. I rarely if ever miss a mold line that way. I find that cleaning after assembling can cast shadows and make some parts difficult to access, resulting in more mold lines in the end.

I practiced a lot, watched a lot of videos, and then practiced some more. What helped me out a lot was starting with a few units of really shitty-looking models (in my case, old plastic Dark Eldar warriors). The repetition built my skills and I wasn't intimidated about making an already ugly model look bad.
