This seems like one of the only generals up now since it's apparently Friday. Have some questions.

I know shit like Red decks are generally known for burn/aggro, but have they ever excelled at other play styles like combo or control?
>>
>>53085740
Of course. Control/combo is actually more viable for mono-red than burn/aggro in EDH.

What's with the confusion about being able to play islands in a non-blue deck? You can't play Mystic Monastery in Azorius either, so why could you play UB land in Gitrog?
>>
>>53085740
Big Red or Skred are some famous ones.
>>
>>53085740
Red tends to be good at combo and artifacts.

pick one dunce.

Staff of Nin is an auto include in ANY deck that doesn't have black or blue. It NEVER gets targeted, so should they not happen to be dropping vandalblast or bane of progress to deal with other shit, you're getting an extra card every turn for the rest of the game and an extra damage to deal with mana dorks or just hit them in the face every turn, for 6 mana. It's legitimately an amazing card in EDH.

>>
>>53086769
Eldrazi unfortunately won't happen. They have too much story relevance and their only characters are the Titans, which are either dead or bound to the moon and are all pure colorless mana.
>>
>>53086779
Why would you play it on Tana?
>>
>>53086779
I play it in my Sidar Kondo deck and just put it on him, the next time someone plays a board wipe I get 5 life + 5 cards for 4 mana. Worth it all day long.
>>
>>53086738
>>53086779
Okay misread at first. Assuring the big guy dies is inconsistent though, since the deck's removal consists of targeted exile.
>>53086787
How often do you play EDH?
>>53086804
Because either there are big critters around and she struggles to do something or I buff her above the rest and then she does something.
>>53086834
Getting put into command zone is a replacement effect, so unless you bin him into the graveyard you don't get anything.
>>
>>53086790
it's only 90$ in italian
how i got mine
>>
>>53086738
>You play it on THEIR big guy
Sac in response, cast removal in response, let it apply and then exile/bounce/flicker it, let it apply and destroy the enchantment etc.
Also it doesn't even work with commanders if you take them to the command zone.
>>
>>53086799
While I agree with you, I was actually thinking of post-Rise of the Eldrazi/pre-Battle for Zendikar Eldrazi era where the three titans were freed from their prison.

The titans seems to be able to use colored spells at this time so giving one of three titans a (multi)color identity could work. But yeah, it's going to be forced.

Calm down there, slugger. Red's wheels and green's creature-based draw will outperform Staff of Nin in most decks. It's a good low budget card, but I wouldn't call it amazing.

goblin wizards
merfolk dragons
zombie snakes
angel spirits
Each box will be 4 color
each box will have two legends and a commander pw. The commander walker
will be multi color and be auxiliary famous walkers that are still alive, ie rakdos tibalt
The "red" deck wont have chaos warp or blood moon and will be aimless
They will reprint krosan grip in the "blue" deck because it will be pushing simic
The other two decks will be what you'd expect but will both have mutavaults and this will upset merfolk players because the merfolk deck wont have a mutavault
A new goblin will give all non permenant spells you control conspire
A new angel will be an updated version of corvax
A new zombie will support a proliferate theme but also will have drs' ability to eat spells from the gy to drain. It will also have a ghetto regenerate.
A new dragon will allow you to reassign blockers but the ability will be tragically overcosted. It will also have haste.
None if these cards will synergize with the precons but will make sense with one of the commanders.

>>
>>53087521
It's retarded to spend money on most things besides basic necessities really. And don't give me the "cardboard" excuse, you can ridicule anything in that manner, you can ridicule a car for being just a bunch of metal.

I assume you have a TV? That's badly spent money too, seeing as a PC does basically the same thing and more. Do you own movies? Games? Books? All of those can easily be gotten for free on the internet, so that can be seen as a waste of money as well.

If you'd truly count up everything, most people are surrounded by the fruits of misspent money. But all of this is irrelevant, all that's relevant is that the buyer does not regret his purchase.

Spending money on mtg is also not the worst thing you can do, since cards will often retain their value or go up in time. If you want out, you can sell easily.
>>
>>53087032
Unless you're actually extremely good, what's a guitar gonna do for you? It won't make you any money, it's just a useless hunk of junk that makes noise, why even spend a single dollar on it?
>>
>>53087598

Money is not a problem for us. Like I said, I have 4 warhammer armies.

You seem to think that people with a lot of money have no problem with spending four figures on pieces of cardboard with dragon pictures on them to impress the local NEET community at the game store.

I play EDH with a big group, and the person with the most expensive deck is the jobless autistic fatass who lives with his parents. My girlfriend played with his deck once. When I told her how much it cost later, seeing the mixture of pity and disgust play over her features was divine.

You can't drive any bunch of metal though, if that were the case then the argument for "car being just a bunch of metal" would be far more widespread. Meanwhile you could literally print the cards on paper and the game would play the exact same as with the originals, except your deck would cost 5 cents instead of 5 grand.

And you can't play magic the gathering with regular cardboard, and nobody would want to play with you if you'd print the cards on paper, proxies are already a hot issue. I could go on like this forever, you all act as if there's some line in the sane that distinguishes some kind of objective "value" than any object has, but there isn't. When all humanity is dead, those objects lose all their value, the only thing that grants them value is the fact that we grant value to them, our emotions and feelings.

If someone bought a regular piece of paper for 5000 dollars, but it made him happier than anything else, happier than the general person is after they spent 5000 dollars on leisure, who is then the fool? Him, or the one criticizing him?

Value is derived from utility and difficulty of acquisition, which includes scarcity. If scarcity is as easily manipulable as just printing a new set of cards, then it's far from insane to call such an item overpriced.

There is no objective quantification of "happiness" so that one's a fallacy. If he can't pay his rent because he spent 5000 dollars on a piece of paper that he felt emotional over, is he not a fool?
>>
>>53086173
Tana and Silas with unblockabe or wide saps with artifact equipment. Super aggro heavy but with actual counter spells and burn for board control.
>>
>>53087854
> If scarcity is as easily manipulable as just printing a new set of cards, then it's far from insane to call such an item overpriced.

Reserve list

Also I agree, I have a hard time spending more than 20$ on anything that's not reserve list. The stuff that is though... You realize even if you blow 300$ on an underground sea it's going to gain a few hundred dollars in a few years instead of depreciating, right?
>>
>>53087854
You are introducing new variables. Obviously, like I've said, your basic necessities need to be provided for (although, one could argue that if something makes you sufficiently happy to forego basic necessities, or even to be willing to die, what's saying that he's an idiot? Happiness is not objective, indeed, but if someone feels happy enough to be able to die for it, are they wrong? If they have no regrets, are they wrong?)

I don't think value is derived from utility and difficulty of acquisition. I watched the Shawshank Redemption a few years ago. In my opinion it's the greatest movie ever made, and it's an experience that I value immensely. There is no utility, it's just a feeling of fulfillment after seeing what I consider a masterpiece. There's no scarcity either, I could watch this movie whenever I want, for no cost. Yet I don't consider it to be of little value, am I wrong to think so?

I don't think happiness and fulfillment play by the rules of the market.

Correct! Prossh with lots of token generation for assorted reasons. fodder for Skullclamp/Beastmasters Ascension, boosting Champion of Lambholt to Obscene P/T and so on.
My favorite is people inexplicably leaving Dragon Broodmother alone and/or not realizing that she spits out a dragon EVERY turn.
>>
>>53088351
No, sorry. The deck would honestly be better if I just made Darretti the commander instead of just in the 99.

It's a ton of artifact ramp, as much library manipulation as possible (Top, Scroll Rack, fetches, etc), all the wheels, Eldrazi to cycle my graveyard, and as many basics as possible to activate Valakut. Also some boardwipes like Blasphemous Act and Ugin.

It's definitely the most controlling monored deck I've seen. It sometimes gets blown out by a Bane of Progress or similar effect, though.

Skullclamp + Squee is straight value, though.

tcgplayer gives you a good estimate of what a card is worth. You can check ebay to generally see the lowest prices a card is selling for.

I like using magiccards.info for checking a bunch of cards because the site is super lightweight, it pulls its prices from tcgplayer anyways, and the cursor always appears in the search bar after each load. Makes it quick to type in a bunch of different cards in succession.

If you try to sell them to a store, realize you're going to get significantly less than what you could sell them for on your own. But selling to a store is about a thousand times easier.

You can speculate all you want, but it's kind of old news. We know that there is going to be 4 decks, so people trying to figure the tribes out by color is stupid. People will also hope for their pet tribal decks to pull through, even though we already know this shit isn't going to cephalids or squirrels.

The best thing I can think of is that each deck is going to have a major "race" tribal (like merfolk) and a major class tribal (like wizard). And the creatures in the deck will all be mostly merfolk wizards, with a different commander for merfolk and a different commander for wizards, to choose which theme you want to stick with most.
>>
>>53089186

well the U/R decks usually win via spells. Mostly I just don't want it to be the type of full aggro deck a lot of tribal sort of winds up being. Like goblin, merfolk, soldier, even elves a little. "Play a bunch of this creature and then make them bigger and then swing to win."

Wizards seems like an alright tribe for something like this, though there are probably lots of options.

To the naya anon, if you're trying to play lots of creatures but find yourself getting shut down by wraths, I have some suggestions

Ghostway and eerie interlude are pretty effective and in my experience they are better than something like heroic intervention, main reason being that in my meta, cyc rift and toxic deluge, all is dust and Ugin are pretty much the only wipes I see, even when decks run other wipes they tutor for those very often. The other reason is that ghostway and eerie interlude can be absurd, game winning value sometimes, and they combo with eternal witness or Greenwarden of Murasa for pseudo infinite board wipe protection

Speaking of Greenwarden, he's great against wraths, naya isn't the best at drawing cards, but it has pretty excellent recursion options, and that can function in a similar way to let you overwhelm your opponents with card advantage, Reveillark sun Titan and karmic guide are particularly good for this, all 3 also happen to be excellent with ghostway and eerie interlude

As for card draw, shamanic revelation and the like are decent but as you said, it can be tricky to find the right time to use them, given that you need to fire them off before the wipe. One tip I can give is to not get greedy, sometimes a shamanic rev for 3 cards is the right play, especially if you smell a wrath about to come down

Another tip is to run lots of etb dorks like rec sage and flame tongue kavu, because they can receive anthems and counters do combat triggers and other naya related stuff, but you can also play them into board wipes, because you got your value already and you might just get more after a wrath of sun Titan and such are involved

>>
>>53090272

Depends, I've had fun doing both. The problem with a deck that revolves around the commander is that commanders can be killed. It was worse with tuck, but a lot of the time recasting your commander into a string of removal and wipes is not going to work, so your deck still has to work with your commander dying to some extent

On the other hand some commanders are incredible enablers like Zada or zur the enchanter, where building around is so valuable that you risk sometimes not being able to do much without your commander

Are you playing multiplayer or 1v1? Counterspells are usually pretty bad value in multiplayer. In 1v1 you have to outvalue them somehow. More small spells instead of big ones, activated abilities, triggers etc.
>>
>>53090272
The best is when the commander dictates the deck's strategy BUT the deck works even without the commander.

I started off with Grixis Marchesa and built the deck entirely around her, but people caught on and just counterspelled or removed her before I could get online and it became a durdly mess.
Nowadays it's more focused on traditional reanimation and strong ETBs and it's a lot more fun to play. It still has a bunch of cards that synergize with the commander in particular, but those cards also function well without her.

Hey guys, Legacy player here, I was curious what you all thought about the changes to the Magic Online Commander banned/restricted list?

Seems like some bullshit to me that they'd ban Zur and unban Leovold, plus getting rid of longtime format staples like Sol Ring. Then again it's just 1v1 Commander, I don't know how popular that is, or if anyone here cares about MTGOnline.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/magic-online-commander-changes-and-what-it-could-mean-for-all-of-us
>>
>>53093993
no one gives a shit about 1v1
>>
>>53093993
I'd enjoy a ban of fast mana rocks and some of their other bans also make sense (E.g. Necropotence, Food Chain). But fuck ever unbanning a single one of the cards it would unban.

i dont really see the point of commander if your deck doesnt revolve around the commander or the commander doesnt play a major role
>>
I wanna build WB incremental lifegain + "each opponent loses x life" sort of deck. Ayli and Karlov are out of the question, since a guy in my meta has optimized decks of those already.

Is Obzedat actually good? Are there any good options for what I want in WBx? Partners?

>>53094551
a buddy of mine used that card once and i just wrathed the turn after. he immediately scooped and took the card out of his deck. shit was funny as fuck
>>
>>53094523
Commander should have to do with something your gameplan or should be decent value, but a deck should never be dependant on the commander. If a deck can't function without a commander, it's a bad deck, no matter how strong the interactions are with the commander
>>
>>53093903
Well now I want to know how many creature types there are.

>>
>>53094585
i used to think that but now that the tuck rule doesnt exist anymore i see no point in not having your commander be the star of the show. its EDH, i have like 20 mana on turn 5, the odds of me actually not being able to cast it and protect it is slim. if you cant keep your commander out you might need to get better at deck building so you can have some answers to removal
>>
>>53094645
My answer to removal is playing more spells.

Sidar Kondo of Jamuura and Kraum ludevic's. The deck is mostly just token stuff, but Kraum is a reliable card draw machine early on if I don't draw more card draw spells. And Sidar Kondo is a nice general for tokens for small stuff + the "don't hit me" effect is cool

>>
This may be a retarded question, but what's the point of playmats when the people who tend to have them also already double-sleeve their cards?
>>
>>53095282
Are you assuming nobody else around the table will play anything for 6 turns?
>>
>>53095336
Given that that's literally your best case scenario, yes.
>>
>>53095316
It's to prevent cards from sliding around mostly. Also it's usually easier to pick up your cards from a playmat than a flat table.
>>
>>53095316
Sleeves are made to move around easily but not slip on playmats. If you're sleeving your cards you should be using a playmat.
>>
>>53093993
almost every single ban list change is something i had been hoping for, for a long fucking time. there are problems, but they've already shown themselves 250% more competent than that piece of useless fucking genetic garbage called sheldon

sol ring/mana crypt/friends should have been banned a long ass fucking time ago, as well as a fair amount of the other degenerate bullshit enablers

the only thing I'm mildly salty about is entomb because that was a hell of a utility card in fair decks, but I can live without it. I'm going to push for everyone at my store to follow the MTGO list from now on, FUCK the rc those stupid fucking ass holes

Derevi and 99 Forests.

More like any people who thinks that only way to play EDH is like they play it. Like megascrubs say that infinites and competitive decks have no place in their safe space format and those people should play legacy instead and spikes say that casual players should go play standard instead. Seems like that the former are more common and spikes usually have no issues with stomping scrubs.

Same way that every idiot casual player seem to complain about cards not being banned that have no reason to be so, such as Iona being the most common one.
For fun games, playgroup should have somewhat equal decks powerwise, though.

It's pretty good late game card draw, but not worth it if you're gonna cast it with X less than 5 when Opportunity exists, or the even better Fact or Fiction and Dig Through Time. Also, Pull from Tomorrow is a lot better if you're not going to mill someone, or Stroke of Genius if you're multicolored.
