Pathfinder General /pfg/

Bringing Two Guns to a Gunfight Edition

What are your favourite methods of using firearms in Pathfinder? Gunslinger, fighter, gunsmoke mystic, gun witch? Maybe something from Spheres of Might playtest? One gun, two guns, Kasatha with four guns?

What is the functional difference between a Daemon and a Qlippoth? They both want to destroy everything.
>>
>>52929902
they're extremely niche, but they're better than Daring Cavalier, despite what /tg/ thinks because daring cavalier fucks itself over for damage. You're better of using Unchained Rogue and taking the Panache Talent.
>>
>>52929951
Qlippoths existed before anything. They are also chaotic evil as opposed to neutral evil. Qlippoth only want to destroy anything that isn't the abyss.

Daemons want to literally annihilate the multiverse.
>>
>>52929968
Is a Daemon just an NPC who's tired of the campaign and wants to shoot the DM
>>
>>52929955
>Panache talent for rogue

The what now, got sauce on that?
>>
>>52929951
Qlippoths are defined by their relation to demons. They are proto-demons and loathe them, and by extension humanity because it's mortal sin that allowed demons to spawn. They are more primal, aberrant and maybe even "primitive".
>>
>>52930053
So basically they're oldfags, humans are newfags, and demons are reddit?
>>
>>52930060
Qlippoths are oldfags, humans are normies and demons are newfags. Degenerate normies land in the 4chan and piss oldfags off.

>>52930763
Pretty good. There are decent odds that Starfinder will float a bunch of rules changes just to see what people like (not necessarily what's actually good) that they can include in a second edition.

It'll probably just end up being a bunch of tiny incremental changes to basic rules, though. I wouldn't hope for some kind of revival for d20. Paizo's survived off of the lingering success of 3e for so long there's no way they try and do something actually new.

>>
Why do people complain about Pathfinder being bloated? Isn't having more options better? And besides, GMs can always dictate was is and isn't in setting?
>>
>>52930977
>Isn't having more options better?
Not when 90% of those are actually non-options due to either having negligible benefit compared to shit you actually NEED, or in some cases actively making your character worse.
>>
>>52930977
I don't know but Pathfinder is pretty weird in its setting
Golarian is like 60 other settings tossed in a salad and mixed up together.
If you're talking about mechanics it's because a lot of them are either boring 'mechanics' or fun concept but shit execution - see Magus for more onthat.
>>
>>52930977
You could paste shit down to the 20% people actually bother and still have way too much, and nobody would notice. Nobody uses the garbage content, it exists to pad out books and hide the actually useful shit so people who autistically dig for it can feel good about themselves.

It's also full of incomplete shit that desperately needs attention, but will never get it because that doesn't make big bucks. We have a billion archetypes that need to be expanded or rerolled entirely, whole classes (like magus and investigator) even, but that won't happen because new shit sells better. Hell, look at Mooncursed Barbarian, it was ALREADY INVALIDATED by another, newer archetype, rather than being reworked into something actually good.
>>
>>52931000

Oh gosh! I'm going to go onto the forums and bitch about my Water Balloon Fighter not being as good as someone using a longbow!
>>
>>52930977
Only if they're real, valid options. Pathfinder has so many trash options in it that sorting through them for the actually usable stuff is really tedious.

Seriously, there are nearly 3,000 feats in Pathfinder, just from Paizo material. And the vast majority of them are totally worthless, just existing to waste your time and pad wordcount.
>>
>>52930763
That's not the important question, the important question is whether a PF 2E would be good.

And let me tell you now, the answer to that is no.
>>
>>52931102

The amount you get paid has little to no bearing on what you produce. It's like saying because you don't get paid as a chef you can't know how to cook.
>>
>>52931008
>>52931087
Not him but I hear Magus get shit on alot around here. What exactly about them makes them suck so bad?
>>
>>52931373
the professional chef making 6+ figures is likely to be better at cooking than the high school dropout taking orders at mcdonalds
>>
>>52931415
They're fine. It's just a little tiring that some of their strongest options are really weirdly specific, so different magus characters end up looking a lot like each other.
>>
>>52931453
Isn't this the case with most classes?
>>
>>52931420
Yes, but the professional chef making 6+ figures doesn't suddenly become bad at cooking when he's not being paid for his signature dish.
The amount you're getting paid for your work is not an excuse for shit quality, although it might well be an indicator since if you were actually good at cooking you wouldn't be working at a burger stand.

>>52931415
They're boring, evenmoreso than Fighters, and get outclassed by a lot of other characters, and there's like two or three viable builds, maximum. Unlike other classes too if you don't use a good build you're basically unplayably shit.
>>
>>52931460
Not to the same degree, and certainly not when you're talking about other spellcasters.
>>
>>52931415
I like magus, but my biggest gripe with them is that they don't get full BAB like a duskblade.
>>
>>52931473
>They're boring, evenmoreso than Fighters

How in the world do you build a Fighter in a way that's less boring than Magus?

I'm not disagreeing with you, I really want to know.
>>
Regarding Starfinder,

Is anyone here planning a campaign or story for it?
>>
>>52931512
Literally every magus is the same thing, and adding to the frustration is the idea that a spellsword SHOULD be cool but the Pisszo version isn't. As a fighter you can at least ape 2fast spearmen or Guts or something, but Magi, being shit and functionally locked into one build, are neither fun to build nor fun to play.
>>
>TFW we get around to brewing the entothrope skinwalkers and their alternate spell-like ability is vomit swarm
>>
>>52931415
>>52931460
The problem is that the strongest options blending characters together are all SO SPECIFIC that the need to use them to make the class pretend to be functional results in it being BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS that all Magi are basically just the same build with different paint. It's always the same spell(s), the same playstyle, the same weapon(s), the same Arcana (especially when they nerfed Flamboyant Arcana/Arcane Deed), the same problems. The Magus's actual MECHANICS aren't too terrible (Spell Combat is great, IMO), it's how they're put together in a class that's a major problem. The Magus is very clearly Paizo's first attempt at designing a class.

Also, to lead into >>52931493
Lots of the good 3/4th BAB classes get something to shore up their BAB outside of their WBL. You know what the Magus gets to do that? To add +1's to their sword, with a limited pool of special abilities that they have to spend both Arcana and extra pool points to add to.
>>
>>52931563
Why IS Shocking Grasp the end-all be-all, anyway?
>>
>>52931591
Nothing else in their spell list is really better, pound for pound.
>>
>>52931563
The really confusing part is that it's clearly a Duskblade with the serial number filed off, but they utterly ruined the things that made the Duskblade passable.
>>
>>52931531

I'm kicking around a few ideas, yeah. Probably won't have a solid picture until the book release, or at least the June sample, but I'd like to run some space adventures.
>>
>>52931563
The Magus is more like an archetype than a class, and I mean "archetype" as in "character trope" and not "class archetype". It's like a mechanized version of one single character who fights with sword and spell, not the mechanical version of a generic character who fights with sword and shield.
>>
>>52931531

I've seen several ideas thrown around here that ranged from "exploring a large expanse of uncharted space" to "two rival megacorporations bicker over the rights to a system, causing a three-way war between the megacorps and the natives."
>>
>>52931531
Trying to piece one together. Honestly though, I don't know what to make of it. Until I actually see rules and what is and is not possible it's all just a pipe dream.
>>
>>52931591

No save, attack bonus if they're wearing metal, electric resistance isn't particularly common at low levels, damage can scale surprisingly well for such an early-game spell.
>>
>>52931591
It just WORKS. It's lethal damage, it scales 1-1 with level and can be Intensified to scale higher, it has a bonus effect (+4 on Attack Rolls vs Metal), it's a damage type rarely resisted at early levels (Electricity), and its closest competitor is strictly WORSE IN ALL WAYS FOR NO REASON. SERIOUSLY, THE ACID TOUCH IS JUST "ACID DAMAGE", THAT'S THE ONLY UPSIDE. THE DICE ARE SMALLER, THERE'S NO BONUS EFFECT, IT DOESN'T EVEN IGNORE SPELL RESISTANCE LIKE OTHER ACID SPELLS.

Also Frostbite WOULD be REALLY good (1d6+CL Damage, useable CL number of times? With a rider effect? Damn son), but it's both Cold Damage and Nonlethal damage, which completely ruins it since so much shit is immune to one or both of those.

How do you come up with interesting stories for your characters, especially highly optimized characters with complicated builds?

I have a ton of fun build ideas kicking around but I've never been any good at actually pulling everything together with a story to create a compelling character. It's like every character I make stops at the build and never makes it beyond that.
>>
>>52931610
I'm glad people finally came around to my point of view on it after like 5 years of jacking off to the Magus, at least. Full BAB, better feat support, and better PrCs/multiclass opportunities counts for a lot.
>>
>>52931753

Don't forget the classes:

>Soldier – Fighter++, Heavy weapons, ranged or melee, focus on a weapon specialist.

>Operative – Specialize on a subterfuge role, spy, snipper, infiltration, etc, heavy skill focus, master of skills.

>Envoy – Helps everyone else out. Han Solo & Princess Leya. Space Bard, or Spaceship Captain, etc…

>Mechanic – Fixes things! Has a robot companion or AI Companion.

>Mystic – Similar to the Oracle. Channels the magical energy of the universe. Not only from gods. Psycho, head exploder, the force etc…

>Technomancer – combines magic and technology. Magic is thought if like programming code. Figure out the laws of the universe, bend and break them.

>Solarian – Balance of the universe between Energy and Entropy. Embraces two sets of powers for each, using them effects the power of the other. Light and Heat, vs Gravity. Could make a Jedi with this class, mystical melee. Has a mote of stellar energy that can be used to form energy weapons or armor.
>>
>>52931763
The easiest thing I've found to do is roll them up using a background generator - there's even one on the SRD. once you have the skeleton of a story (which is what a good background generator will give you) you can piece it together into something cool. As you roll, you'll come across stuff that you can decide just doesn't work for the character and pick something else.

>>52931763

Consider your build the framework for your character, rather than a limitation.

I think I've said it every time it comes up, but the Magus just needs to be straight up gutted down to the barebones basics and reworked from there. Spell Combat, Spellstrike, and Arcane Pool are the three main features of the class, and it fails utterly to actually use them in any meaningful way. Hell, one of the best arcana is Arcane Accuracy and that's still impressively anemic.

Also, you know what confuses the fuck out of me? That something as simple as Produce Flame isn't on the Magus spell list. It's the most basic kind of offensive fire spell and the kind of effect constantly shown in spellsword art and it ISN'T ON THE MAGUS SPELL LIST.

Well, damage across the board has been increased to account for the higher lethality of gun based combat. At level 2, there was a spell used during the livestream (a level 1 spell similar to Burning hands) that did 4d6 electricity damage.

If weapon damage scales at the same rate as magic (which you can do in Pathfinder, though not super easily) then a vital strike style build with a sniper rifle should be able to churn out one-shot-one-kill stuff.

That's just speculation though. We haven't seen the Operative in action; we've only seen a mechanic, a technomancer, and a solarion.

you get an extra pool of HP called "Stamina" that represents your luck and ability to avoid getting hit in the first place. Stamina recovers with 10 minute rests. if they carry over robot stuff from Pathfinder, personal forcefields will also be available.

Because in low-op it's at least more functional than things like a Rogue or Monk, and PFS players are terrified of lots of damage dice. If you pull out an Empowered/Intensified Shocking Grasp Critical hit due to blind luck and have to whip out (1.5*20d6)+2d6+22 damage with a single hit "that one time" then HOLY MOLY THAT'S SO OVERPOWERED. NEVERMIND THAT YOU'RE BLOWING SPELLS TO DO BLASTING.

>Charisma measures a character’s personality, personal magnetism, ability to lead, and appearance. It is the most important ability for paladins, sorcerers, and bards. It's a mental stat and has always been treated as a mental stat.

There are several instancs in D&D where books have flat out stated that High Charisma doesn't
always mean "attractive" see: Hitler

There are characters in PATHFINDER that have 8 Charisma and are described as Handsome and 11 charisma described as homely looking(Orik and Lyrie respectively).

I had this idea once for an archetype. Honestly ignore most of it. The metaphysics of the world suffer from pretty much the same bloat everything else does, there are how many outsider races by now? And considering the fact that there are tons of each, and each is supposed to have its own list of demigods on top, there just isn't room for everything. Like seriously, name me the last time you saw an inevitable get brought up ever in the game.
Though its clear, like alot of other things, not to much thought is put into it. Take the inevitbles for instance, the cr 20 guy from bestiary 2 is listed as having the primary job of stopping interplaner portals. Is he brought up in WotR ever when there's a giant portal between the abyss and the material plane? Nope.

You'll get your AC bonus on rounds when you aren't shooting and any other benefit you've slapped on the buckler via magic as well. On rounds when you shoot, you don't get the shield bonus or any other AC benefit from the buckler, but there's no penalty besides weight/cost.

Huh. I wanted to make a rifle user with a buckler. I guess you could only use it on a round you did not make attacks, or if you had not attacked yet in surprise round/first turn.

Still a cheap situational buffer to AC, in my opinion.
>>
>>52933210
As an added bonus, if you REALLY WANTED, you could dump Str and Dex to 7 and the only thing you have to worry about is carry capacity and your Acrobatics checks. They aren't very good at their gimmick of casts spells and fighting fools. Later hybrids do the 6-caster mix better, the Paladin does fighting fools better, and Bards/divine full casters do the 3/4ths BAB casting spells thing better.

Their damage comes from fishing for critical hits with a very specific set of spells or gimmicking a pounce with their Flurry of Blows alike. They take forever to get better casting armor proficiency than a Bard, much less a Cleric or Druid, their spell list isn't great as far as 6-casters go, and they have a very narrow workable niche that requires fiddling with awkward mechanics to work.

They're beloved because people like Gishes, but are probably the weakest arcane caster in the game.

Alrighty, so let's see how good the Blingmaker crew is in bed.
To explain my results, I converted things roughly into Fallout's scale--10-11 is 5, with things being about 1 point lower or higher for every 2 points they are in Pathfinder, the exceptions being 17 is 9 and 18 is 10.

Kyras was the only standout with a Sex score of 7, while everyone else had a Sex score of 6. Pretty much anyone who didn't bump up Charisma had good enough Dex, at least, to make up for it, and the tendency of /pfg/ players to bump Con up to at least 14 means that pretty much everyone would have good Endurance.

But sadly, none of them are good enough to be porn stars. Maybe Kyras if he wins a tournament and takes Kama Sutra Master to gain the hidden bonuses, but that's doubtful, he's feat-starved enough already.

So, can you bring padded and breastplate armor at the same time? If you say "I remove your breastplate", can you say that you are wearing (as people did) padded armour underneath?
>>
>>52933553

I divided all of their attributes by 2 and followed the formula, with CH as CHA, EN as CON, AG as DEX and ST as STR.
>>
>>52933524
Notably one thing missing from that formula above that I should have mentioned is a flat bonus after calculation of stats if you have the Sex Appeal trait. I don't know how big that bonus is, though.
>>
>>52933573
>So, can you bring padded and breastplate armor at the same time?

It's generally assumed, especially with the heavier armors, that people are wearing stuff underneath them, yes. Your DM would have to be a jerk to say you aren't wearing a gambeson under your breastplate or full suit.
>>
>>52933557
These people killed all possible enjoyment of RotJR, why shouldn't they do so for Blingmaker?
>>
>>52933589
Kama Sutra Master gives +2, Sex Appeal gives +1, and Sex God (which may or may not actually exist without a patch) also gives +2.

You're also supposed to have 8 in both Agility and Endurance, as well as 9 in Charisma--to Dex 16+, Con 16+, and 17 Charisma by my reckoning--but you can avoid those requirements if you're a prizefighter or a made man.

>>52933524
So what would a stat line of 10 str, 18 dex, 14 con, and 18 cha be?
>>
>>52933625

I'm getting around 8.1, which is incredible.
>>
>>52933104
>>52933215
It kinda sucks in a way. Killing a demon lord almost feels like it wouldn't matter in the long run because there are tons of others and new ones every now and again, besides they just kinda sit there and dont do much anyways.
>>
>>52933640
Presumably the final number is based roughly on the same scale of 1 to 10 for stats in fallout, with 5 being average and 10 being one of the best in the world.

So yeah that would be amazing.
>>
>>52933686
>>52933640
And the minimum requirement for being a porn star in New Reno is 9. Which is fucking insane.

You gotta admit that slaying Demon Lords wouldn't be a good way to pass the time as an end-game Crusader trying to stabilize the Abyss... Or keep it in enough chaos that it can't bother the upper planes.

I'm looking at making a hurling barbarian, but I've got a couple questions.

>Is there a feat that lets you use strength to throwing?
>Is there a feat that lets you throw things farther than ten feet?
>Elephant Totem (heroes of the jade oath) rage power gives you size bonuses to CMB, CMD, and while in a rage, you are able to wield weapons one size larger than normal. Does this mean, if I were a large-sized barbarian, could I pick up and throw a large-sized rock, or two medium-sized rocks?
>The Greater Hurling rage power allows me to throw rocks at a distance of thirty feet, or throw a large-sized rock ten feet. Can I take a middle ground, where I can throw a medium-sized rock twenty feet?
>>
>>52933742
>stabilize

Does it count as stabilized if you kill 99% of everything and create an organization dedicated to keeping the remaining 1% from gaining any power?

Is there any way for a human to wield more than two weapons? 1pp preferred, but 3pp allowed.
>>
>>52933742
Oh yeah in universe its a massive feat with crazy implications no doubt, it's just that because the books don't go out of there way to explain all the things they do it feels weird because as far as we know the demon lords are just sitting on their asses. Though I guess thats really the domain of the GM, showing all the crazy evil things they do and how you made the world a better place and so on.

I know conventional "tanking" isn't really a thing in Pathfinder, but are there any resources for someone looking to play a beefy frontliner that's hard to kill?

Volley Marksman, Kaigun Archetype. Dual Revolvers, with psionic powers like Offensive Prescience and Bolt, along with deadeye shot, I could get 1d8+19 per shot, and when I crit it became crazy. I got the build banned.

Stand Still is good. Get you some reach and become The Wall.
>>
>>52933833

Paladins are ridiculously tough to disable or kill pretty much out of the box. Barbarians can get pretty damn tanky with the right options, too.

As for protecting someone else, you might look into the High Guardian Fighter archetype. You get to designate someone as your "charge", and you get free protective abilities that let you take the bullet for them (in addition to STR-based Combat Reflexes, so you can absolutely shut down people who try to move past you).
>>
>>52933879
>Yeah.

There's an artifact in Book 6 of Iron Gods that gives you two extra arms.
>>
>>52933833
Fey Foundling / Greater Mercy paladin is pretty unkillable
>>
>>52933879

Alchemist discoveries are one option, either through a dip in the class or through an archetype that allows them, like Mutation Warrior.
>>
>>52933833
The stonelord paladin trades a lot of its magic and divine stuff in exchange for armour bonuses, bonuses to bull rushes and trips, and very nice DR scaling. Along with increasing immunities to things, he gets pretty goddamn hard to kill.
>>
>>52933902
There's also the Furious Guardian prestige class which meshes well with Barbs.

Most of drawing attention to yourself is about how the character is played rather than built, though. For dumb or mindless enemies it's usually enough to stand in the front lines and shove an axe near their faces. For smarter or more numerous enemies, it's best to have lots of tricks up your sleeves that convince your DM that they'll target you. Shoot a Screaming Bolt at the start of combat, for example, and the mooks should be on your ass first and foremost.
>>
>>52933958
Vestigial arm does not allow extra attacks anon.

>>
>>52934006

No, but it lets you hold a weapon.
>>
>>52933833
From what I can think of Primalist Destined Bloodrager is the most tanky due to a combination of their luck bonus saves, superstition, and the rest. Even more so if you drip 2 levels into paladin.
>>
>>52934057
What sort of heroic deeds should I do to get her to sit on me
>>

>>
>>52934032
If we half every statistic of the CR 7 succubus (6.5 str, 8.5 agi, 10 end, 13.5 cha) and assume no traits (in this case, that is probably represented by their insane charisma anyway) then the average succubi is a 11.135. Seems about right.

So a friend of mine called my setting edgy, I am wondering about opinions from here. The basic ideas are:

>the major conflict of the setting is the struggles between different demigods for dominance
>these demigods form a vast patchwork of religions, sometimes banding together into pantheons or groups of saints, but often enough leading tiny cults in the middle of nowhere
>all demigods for dominance require 'consumption', a basic means of gaining power
>the form of their consumption is based on their nature, and may be directly eating flesh, carnal relations, witnesses sacrifice, or more
>all require the demigod to be in proximity, so 'consumption' when they are not there is for the most part pointless
>these demigods slowly ascend to godhood, leaving the mortal coil
>after ascension they are generally gone from the world and no longer power clerics, what happens upon ascension is generally a secret and has as many false explanations as one can count
>what is known is that upon starting on the road to ascension ever demigod receives a vision that they are unable to share any detail of
>most normal mortals live with demigods as their heads of state, or if not ruling directly they rule from the shadows
>>
Is toughness actually good, or is it a noob trap?

As a new player, it seems strong to me, but I'm worried it'll delay the rest of the feats I want to take to the point where I would regret taking it.
>>
I call dibs on making the next thread.
>>
>>52934283
Depends on who you are. If you're a d10 or d12 HD class you probably done need it. If you're a d6 HD class and never expect to touch melee it won't be enough to save you if someone face presses you. If you're a d8 HD class and expect to see melee combat then you might want to consider it.
>>
>>52934283
The only characters I can see using it are d8 HD front-liners.
>>
>>52934283
It's useful early on if you're a spellcaster or just have low Con, but some players I've gamed with retrain it by level five.

I mean, some classes could use all the help they can get with health, like barbarians or monks.
>>
>>52934258
That sounds fine honestly your friend is a retard.
>>
>>52934304
That's not a thing, anon.

>>52934258
>the form of their consumption is based on their nature, and may be directly eating flesh, carnal relations, witnesses sacrifice, or more
Why is every demigod fucking evil?
>what is known is that upon starting on the road to ascension ever demigod receives a vision that they are unable to share any detail of
Don't make details of your settings which are god-magiced away from entering the player perspective. Something like
>demigods receive a vision of knowledge which they guard closely. Should their secret be discovered, another demigod or even mortal could exploit it to destroy them.
>>
Is there any way to get an extra feat at 1st level without being a human or a fighter?
>>
>>52934350
>Why is every demigod fucking evil?
>What are ancient myths and legends
Gods are assholes.
>>
>>52934258
I don't really see what's edgy about it. "Bad guys in power do stereotypical bad guy demon things" just means you have some shit to crusade against. How you handle the tone while playing would determine if it's edgy.
>>
>>52934258
It's edgy. You need to make the sacrifices more generic

Not all of them are. Others are more basic stuff like eating large amounts of grain, or the writing of books in their presence, or witnessing duels.

>>52934436
But the sacrifices are as different as the deities are. For instance there is a demigod of art who needs to capture beauty in paintings and thus brings models from far and wide to paint and that's its form of consumption.

>>52934816
I feel like there isn't enough to decide something like that, honestly. It's mostly just very short greentexts which is cool but lacks enough context to judge and then smut which is nice but judged differently. Plus I kind of just like everything, which is close to having no standards, the opposite of a connoisseur.

Maybe if there was an easier way to look back on everything I've read I could pick a few that stand out but greentexts are hard to dig in the archives for and there are not that many pastebin'd logs to save.

The characters I like and try to follow the most also only rarely (or never, now) have posts about what's going on with them.
