Pathfinder General /pfg/

What do we think about the new entothropes? Would you a werewasp?

Where wasp?
>>
>>52922540
I would, but only theoretically. I wouldn't in reality online because I don't want to join a /pfg/ game, I wouldn't in my IRL group because even though they know I'm a furry the furthest I'm willing to push that with them is my Catfolk Paladin whose personality is super stern, and I can't with my usual online group either because they don't play Pathfinder.

Call me Yukko because my life is suffering.
>>
>>52922659

Isn't a wasp demonstrably less furry than a cat, though?

By making it undead.

You can also make a were-wasp, but make an Emerald Cockroach Wasp and have it be a commander.

Maybe I'm just oversensitive to the thought of my IRL friends thinking I'm some kind of pervert, though I suppose almost nothing I do can be worse than what one of our other friends who sometimes joins can be like, in one of the last games we played in The Unlucky Red Chair she joked that another PC's young daughter was getting some dick from the fellow orphans you rescue early in Book 1.

There's a thing you can do with Alchemists that allows them to infuse their bombs into their ammunition, it's pretty good IMO.

Romance of Three kingdoms style. Empire has been slowly dying from inside for a generation. A corrupt cliche takes over, rebellion ensues. Corrupt and incompetent tyrant takes the helm, former factions that made the rebellion split up and rebel again. Tyrant dies, but it is no over, now it is a scramble for power and forge their own fiefdom/kingdoms/empires.Two generations later, the Empire is gone, the dynasty extinct, and a new empire has risen up from the ashes from the most unlikely candidate and later newcomer faction.

Come to think of it, why is Z-K LE anyway? From what I've read, he'd be better off as NE, to better contrast with Shelyn and fit his sheer malevolence. The only reason I can see him being LE is because he's so far gone that he barely knows right from wrong, which is still a stretch.

>>
>>52923916
As a player I think it's a neat idea but I don't really know anything about game balance from a DM perspective.

If it'll make the game more fun for your players without breaking your game, I say go for it.

>>52923924
What are you trying to balance?

>>52923934
I am also trying to come up with a worthwhile poison build. I've read a bunch of guides and resources but even the most optimized builds seem really useless compared to... just about anything else. It's really sad, I usually love trying to come up with weird gimmick builds but with poison it always feels like there's nothing I can do to make it any good.

>>52923949
I've never played with homebrew. I always been interested in the idea but none of my groups have ever been open to it. Most of the people I play with have had bad experiences with totally broken homebrew stuff, so I guess it makes sense.

Medusa as a basic player race. Fluffwise they're cursed Elves, crunchwise they've got bonuses to Dex and Con and a penalty to Int, +3 natural armour, all-around vision w. +4 perception, aaaaand...
the gaze attack.
It's such a core part of the thematic draw of the medusa, but obviously giving a save or die ability as a racial isn't going to work. I've thought of uses per day, but that's always struck me as such a stale system, I prefer something that lets characters try to push themselves at some risk. As such, here's my current iteration of the ability:

Basilisk's Cursed Gaze (Su): 30 ft. range. While a Maedu's regular eyes are open, they take 1d6 points of dexterity damage per round as their features begin to calcify and turn to stone, though they may reduce this damage to 1 with a successful Will save (DC = 10 + 1/2 HD + Charisma modifier). Anyone meeting a Maedu's gaze while their eyes are open takes 1d6 points of dexterity damage, and can make a Will save of the same DC to negate the damage. Anyone who's dexterity reaches 0 as a result of this is permanently turned to stone. A Maedu cannot reduce the ability damage taken from using this ability to less than 1.

Thoughts?

Mine would have started in not!Greece during 2nd edition.

Following the roll of years, the enemies would have been Sahaugin, Sparta, Shadovar, wild Dragons, Drow, then not!Vatican.

There would have also been ancient Elven or Psionic ruins. The PCs have to balance homesteading, adventuring, and senate campaigns.

Kobolds are only dogs in japan.

The original D&D stuff referred to them as having 'doglike snouts' as a way to describe their head shape.

And Japanese translations meant that japanese people all ended up thinking of them as dogpeople.

How do you save an Empire from itself?
>>
Can a party have too many faces?

My group has our first session coming up in a week or so. None of us really communicated what we were doing while we were building our characters so more than half of us ended up making charisma heavy stealth characters.

I know group balance doesn't matter too much, but I'm a little worried that the fact that we're all playing very similar characters (both mechanically and from a roleplaying perspective) might make the game a little boring for everyone.

Nothing is set in stone so far, so I still have time to make a new character if I want to. I just really like the character I've built so I'd rather not have to. That being said, if things aren't going to be any fun for the group I might as well just save the character for another campaign he might fit into and come up with something else to play.

If you were trying to have everyone fill a role, you could have had:

Tank - Cavalier or Vanguard Commander (Warlord)

Well, yeah. It entirely depends if the DM will conclude that the reliable prefix reduces the misfire chance on dragons breath rounds. Otherwise it sucks.

I don't know how similarly we're all going to end up playing, but if you look at our character sheets it's mostly the same stuff... bluff, diplomacy, sense motive, stealth, similar alignments. Combat stuff is likely to be a little different (sort of), since one of us is playing a ranger, one of us is playing a bard, and I'm playing an oracle with the intrigue mystery. The other two (witch, monk) are different enough that I'm hoping they'll offer some variety, but I haven't seen their sheets so for all I know it could be even more of the same.

>>52924610
I'm sure the DM can handle it, I just don't want to get two sessions in only for everyone to end up wishing they'd played something else.

Snare setter is pretty good as long as you don't go overboard on it. Just set up traps whenever the other PCs are setting up buffs.

I'm pretty sure Hidden Blade Snare Setter Unchained Rogue is tier 3, or maybe high tier 4, and it's nicely set up for crossbow sniping using the kobold-specific feats/traits.
>>
>>52924466
"Face" is not really a role in pathfinder because it's so easy for even Charisma dumpers to get into reliable Diplo/Bluff/whatever bonuses
>>
How do you rob a foreign, subversive, and alien religion/cult out of its power and influence?
>>
>>52924830
Well, the majority of my group poured almost all of their resources into social bonuses. Which is fine, I guess. I'm just a little concerned about a lack of variety on the roleplaying end of things.

It's funny, really--DPS and Face skills seem to be the most common roles people beeline for in /pfg/ games, but they're also the easiest to pull off and the sort of things that literally any character can be good at if they just roleplay a little.

Damage is unavoidable because you really don't neeeed anything else on the combat side of the game. It's easy to build and the payoff is good.

It's fucking bizarre, really. Everyone keeps trying to make a waifu or husbando based on mechanics by just going all in on Charisma with maybe a token effort towards Con or Dexfagging based on whether they like THICC memes or being slender animu girls.

Whereas the most popular waifus in all the /pfg/ games tend to be girls who dumped Charisma *hard*.
>>
>>52924857
What other roles are there?

I'm not trying to be dense, I'm genuinely curious. I don't think I've ever seen anyone play anything outside of either optimizing for combat or optimizing for roleplaying.
>>
>>52924942
Battlefield control
Buffing
Crafting
Debuffing--and don't you fucking dare give me that argument that BUT DAMAGE IS BEST DEBUFF
Scouting and infiltration--this role can be covered by face skills depending on your ability to plan and think on your feet, but not always
>>
>>52924942
Battlefield control casters aaaaand that's about it as far as the actually relevant stuff goes. I mean after that it's like, sure someone should probably have access to cure light wounds and knowledges but that's such a small investment of effort.
>>
>>52924981
>BUT DAMAGE IS BEST DEBUFF
It literally is
>>
>>52924988
You say that, but when nobody has knowledges, this is what usually happens:
>PCs talk shit about how knowledge is useless
>nobody ever looks for information or inspects anything
>GM has to make NPCs give exposition when nobody knows what's going on
>players shit on GM for railroading because they were too willfully incurious to follow hooks
>nobody is happy
>>
>>52925020
I'm not saying knowledge is useless, I always want knowledges in my group. I'm saying that it takes really little effort to have knowledge options available to you.

Someone is probably making some kind of sacrifice to diplomancer, which they might be happy with if they're already a CHA class or an Investigator, but usually I find groups will just have knowledges available because everyone will have some class skills invested here or there.

What would the ideal kobold snare setter rogue waifu be like?
>>
>>52924981
I think a lot of these things would be more appealing if they weren't so useless when compared to just nuking everything. I know you're not interested in the "damage is best debuff" argument, but unfortunately that seems to be the case a lot of the time.

I've seen tons of people going around looking for viable poison builds or crafting builds or support builds and they all get shut down almost right away. You have to invest so much for builds like that to function that usually it just feels like less work to just go with an established, optimized damage build.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to play a weird build like that. It's just that when you look at the logistics of it and realize you're going to have to dedicate 100% of your resources to making your character function the way you want it to, it starts to feel like more effort than it's worth. Especially when you could just take ten minutes to throw together a poorly optimized sorcerer or cleric, contribute twice as much both in and out of combat, and still have a ton of wiggle room left over to tweak your character however you want.
>>
>>52925094
This is the real problem with imbalanced options yeah.

I don't care that 2h is more reliable damage than TWF, I care that I have to put all this effort into making TWF workable where-as if I were wielding a greatsword I could start dumping feats on fun little things like a Signature Skill or my choice of combat maneuver.
>>

>>
>>52925008
It is but debuffing is still an important role. A witch with a fast debuffing cycle ensures that the opponent doesn't rocket tag your team.

A properly done witch in the first round gives -6 to hit, roll twice and take worst in 1st round. in the second round it progresses to -10 to hit roll 3 times take worst.

Combats will normally end between rounds 3 and 5.

>>
>>52924829
Hmm... I guess I could take a second look at how Snare setter works. I've yet to see all the options available to kobold pcs as far as feats and traits go.
>>
>>52925130
It's so depressing, man. I just want to play a poisoner.
>>
In a casual game running an adventure path where we have been told that "killing every NPC you fight will eventually severely restrict your options or possibly break the story" how bad would it be to be a necro-sorcerer and take blindness/deafness at level 4 and permanently blind everything you fight every fight with no intention of obtaining a way to cure them?
>>
People trash on debuffing but I've literally played 3 different games as debuffing/battlefield contol characters and basically ended encounters in a single turn with unlucky saving throws on the enemy.

Funnily enough, every one of those games I played clerics.
>>
>>52925346
Cleric doesn't count.
>>
>>52925346
Nobody thinks battlefield control is bad, there's a common opinion that it's the single strongest role in the game because properly applied, it basically allows you to delete encounters instead of enemies and gives you the versatility not to delete them when you don't want to.

In regards to debuffing, I feel like you might be thinking about save or dies. Those are generally rolled under damage when people're discussing these things since they serve the same purpose. Debuffing in this context refers to intimimancy, maneuvers, and spells that reduce enemy effectiveness. Particularly, it excludes spells that straight up remove enemies from combat.
>>
>>52925400
Actually I greatly despise save or dies, they feel like a cheap solution to a problem that one should only really have access to when it's also cheaply available to res people and remove the negative levels as well.

In terms of debuffing spells I think one of my favorites for a mid-level character is Boneshatter. A horrifying sounding and terrible effect for a spell and it doesn't even have the Evil descriptor to it, plus it doesn't specify that the casts of it don't stack in terms of the fatigue so even if the target does make the save, two hits of Fatigue makes the target exhausted instead in addition to taking absurd amounts of damage, which basically removes you from the encounter without some ability to remove the condition.

Gun Training (Ex)

Starting at 5th level, a gunslinger can select one specific type of firearm (such as an axe musket, blunderbuss, musket, or pistol).
She gains a bonus equal to her Dexterity modifier on damage rolls when firing that type of firearm. Furthermore, when she misfires
with that type of firearm, the misfire value of that firearm increases by 2 instead of 4. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th),
the gunslinger picks up another type of firearm, gaining these bonuses for those types as well.
Trench Warfare (Ex)

Starting at 3rd level, a trench fighter can select one specific type of firearm (such as a machine gun, revolver, or rifle). He gains a bonus equal to his
Dexterity modifier on damage rolls when firing that type of firearm. Every 4 levels thereafter (7th, 11th, and 15th), the trench fighter picks up another type of
firearm, gaining these bonuses for those types as well. Furthermore, when behind partial, normal, or improved cover, a trench fighter gains an additional +2
AC bonus from the cover.

I thought "great, another succubus but NE".. then I realised this monster is a different beast. The succubus is a perversion/excess of Lust, this one is a perversion/inversion of love and affection.

Erynnes have no connection to anything like that, I think, barring perhaps the fact that they are beautiful/angelic.

Agh, dammit! The more I think on that one campaign idea I mentioned a thread or two back of crusading into the lower planes, the more I'm tempted to actually run it.

I'm going to take a bit to get some setting lore figured out, and also to see if I still want to run it in a week or so. When that's done, who here would actually be interested in a game like that? Yes, lewds allowed, but they won't be the game's focus.
>>
>>52928555

How high-power are you going to make it, Senpai?

What if you made it using the modified Automatic Bonus Progression rules and fluffed the bonuses gained as some sort of burgeoning divine spark, or a blessing, or even just natural skill - ultimately, something the player should fluff in their backstory.
>>
>>52928613
Not sure yet. Early in the campaign I think I might start around level 3 or so just to avoid how lethal level 1 can be, but by the end you'd be fighting the things that rule over those planes (archfiends, demon lords, etc. Not multiple at once, obviously).

I'm debating whether to do Epic level progression or Mythic still. Probably Epic because Mythic can get downright silly. Maybe gestalt? I've never run a gestalt game myself before, how does that affect CR?

Not familiar with the Automatic Bonus Progression rules though, what's the deal there?
>>
>>52928724
>Not familiar with the Automatic Bonus Progression rules though, what's the deal there?

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/other-rules/unchained-rules/automatic-bonus-progression/

Automatic Bonus Progression is a way to acquire the typical stat boosts of magical items without actually having to wear said stat-boosting items. For example, instead of enchanting your suit of armor to a +1 Full Plate, you simply get a +1 AC bonus at level 4.

The system is sincere in what it's trying to fix, but it goes about it the wrong way. It forces you to take Mental Prowess (essentially your belt or headband of attribute boosting) before Physical, for example, and the way Weapon Attunement works denies you the chance to mix up your fighting style (you can only get a Longsword +2, not a Flaming Longsword, for example.)

The fixes commonly listed are thus,
>Players are treated as two levels higher for the purpose of ABP
>Players can choose to receive their Physical Prowess first, or Mental
>Player Attunement is placed into a "pool" rather than hardwired onto the weapon - for example, a player with +2 Weapon Attunement can choose to either make their Longsword a +2 Longsword, or a Flaming Longsword.

>>
>>52928804
>you can only get a Longsword +2, not a Flaming Longsword, for example
I think when a character with +2 weapon attunement picks up a flaming longsword it becomes +1 flaming longsword. Or some stupid shit like that 'cause iirc you can't have both +10 weapon and +10 armor attunement with that system.

If I remember correctly, daemons are or used to be formed from NE people that died in some horrible way, spent time in Abbadon being hunted by other daemons, then eventually hardened the fuck up into a daemon that could kill people in the same way they died. So if my reasoning is correct (which it probably isn't), erodaemons are formed from NE no bf/gfs (or maybe people that got cucked) that try to break other people's hearts so they an hero. Or something.
>>
>>52929092

I'm guessing so. Of course, they're probably too evil to really be affected by it anymore, so you couldn't redeem them with a nice hard hand holding either.
>>
>>52929109
Daemons are literally just killing machines with varying chassis. Each represents a specific way to die. The ultimate goal of Daemons is to KILL EVERYTHING EVER and eat their souls, then kill themselves. They hate everyone, but hate themselves just a bit less, each wants to be the last one to see the end of days. Pretty edgy really.

Seconding that suggestion. Throw on Student of Philosophy and you're a nearly int-SAD buffer and skillmonkey. A bit lacking on direct combat ability, but you more than make up for it with extracts, which you can hand out to allies if you take the Infusion discovery.

What is the difference with Demons, the CE ones?
>>
>>52929400
Demons throw your corpse into the abyss to make more demons! Yay demons!
>>
So how's Swashbuckler? Can you guys go into detail, like how good is one in combat and non-combat situations?
>>
>>52929400
Devils want control. They want to oppress to put their own order to things.

Demons want to break shit, have fun, and screw with people. They delight in subverting things and corrupting everything else - Art? Trash it. Holy man? Make him fall from grace.

Daemons, on the other hand, hate EVERYTHING. The other two fiend types will set aside their differences if they spot a daemon for the express purpose of killing it, before going back to killing each other. Daemons want an end to all things, and are willing to screw over the universe to achieve that, which is bad for everybody who isn't a nihilistic piece of shit.

In theory it's possible to redeem all three - with Devils, they'll never stop wanting order, but you can shift them over to wanting to help people with that order, rather than oppress. With Demons, it's about channeling those destructive impulses into something constructive. Daemons, though, are arguably the hardest; the only way to get destructive nihilists to stop is to make them love the world they're a part of, and thus not want to destroy it.

There's other details, but that's the gist of it.
>>
>>52929479
>In theory it's possible to redeem all three
