For best results, wait to reveal this shit in the endgame. After most of the robots die in their war, let the PCs discover the underground living areas of the cold, heartless oppressors - full of posters cheering the human kids on, photos of them and "DO IT FOR HER" style collages all over their walls. An especially mean antagonist robot that the PCs were actually able to kill has the most emotional collections in its living space, and it's all them. It has photos with it taking care of them as babies. It sent them every birthday cake they ever got in their pre-warzone nurseries. When they landed nude in the woods, it was the one who planted that one rusty sword they'd have died without, and got demoted as a result.

I'm picturing some humans will be psionically gifted like Elans, and some humans will have cybernetically enhanced body parts, but I don't know which other ways the robots will have approached their "Canonical Human" project.

I guess there will be one race that is actually a true AI that was made to be as alike to a human as possible. They'll either have an organic component to their mind / wholly organic brain (which they think is key to humans' connection to the divine) OR the other way I could go with it is have such PCs actually be fully-mechanical and just be planted monitors for tracking the real ones and tragically never told this, of course.

Adhere to classic space opera tropes without making them too generic by trying to "spruce up" the formula.

That said, it might be fun to figure out an empire that fanatically adheres to a religion, is comprised of numerous client races, and makes extensive use of bio-engineering.

Equal parts Combine and Covenant, in other words.

Imagine, ships molded in vast oceanic shipyards that coat them in nacre plating and are "birthed" from the waters, heretics forced into penance by splicing them as the brains of bio-mechanical horrors designed for anything from tank or transport - if they can't fight alongside the faithful, they can carry them.

The elder race of this empire should be one of three races that actually evolved and developed warp on their own - besides them and two others, every other species has been either uplifted or enlightened.

As for the Fallen Empires? We're talking about civilizations that were already receding into the borders of their core worlds when the first humans crawled out of their caves.

The design theme of a Fallen Empire depends mostly on their ethos (are they virulently anti-alien, are they xenophiles, do they worship strange gods?) But all of them share one thing in common; their technology is the stuff of legend, and the galaxy is littered with their wonders. Dyson Spheres, Ringworlds, Terraformers that can turn even the filthiest planet into a lush garden world, the list goes on... And the Fallen Empires have forgotten how to build them, technology lost to the ages.

Even better? The rise of the young races might encourage a Fallen Empire to Awaken, and in doing so might cause another Fallen Empire that was their ancient rival to Awaken too.

And when that happens? The Empires call on the young races for allegiance, because when the trumpets blare and a War in Heaven rages, there are no neutral parties.

So I posted about this in the Discord yesterday, but tell me, /pfg/, what do you think of a chest-slot item that you can install potions of Cure Lights into, and with a flick of a switch the vest automatically injects the potions into you, essentially giving you Fast Healing 5 (the average amount for a Cure Light) for as many turns as you've supplied potions?

What do you think an item like that would be worth, and would it be out of place to see such an item on, say, a Big Evil Boss?

As a weapon, the starknife isn't anything too amazing - 1d4/x3, can be used in melee and thrown, basically the same as a dagger with different crit range.

But, if you worship Desna and take the feat Divine Fighting Technique (Desna's Shooting Star) (which a bard can also take in place of a versatile performance), you can use Cha to attack AND damage with it.

Also make sure to get a blinkback belt (5,000 gp), so you can use a single enhanced starknife for both ranged and melee attacks easily.

Scarlet Throne: Scything Strike (1st), Rising Zenith Strike (2nd), Sanguine Barrier (2nd), Scarlet Eye's Perception (3rd), Sanguine Perseverance (4th)

Elemental Flux: Elemental Flux Stance (3rd level stance), Energy Hammer (4th), Enter The Vortex (5th level stance)

Riven: Time skitter (3rd), Temporal Body Adjustment (4th), Minute Hand (1st), Rapid Strike (2nd)


All those are really good, though some have the same purpose. Rising Zenith (ST) and Rapid Strike (RH) are both "multi-hits" so don't take both, and Temporal Body Adjustment (RH) and Sanguine Perseverance (ST) are both counters for saves/conditions, so doubling up on those is a bit moot. Feel free to play with other stuff though. A lot of stuff is fun and can be used creatively.

Part of it is that *actual* material comes out so rarely, and we go into hyper-autismo-mode to optimize this, so mechanical discussions are a sort of "solved game" thing. There are the clear optimal options, and then it's a matter of toning that down to hit the flavor you want with your character, at least for me. After a while, this kind of thing becomes a bit second nature to you.

One thing that can help is proper scaling and interface. For example, "destroy the core" situations are notably missing from FFG games and even from dungeons the dragoning (I should know; I wrote the early drafts of something to cross that gap over, but there wasn't much interest). You're either at people scale, or at giant-starfleet scale.

Even smaller scales are generally "your ship gets one action per character onboard, so even a fighter can't actually function normally without a 3-man crew and if you do that the mothership is completely fucked because now it can't even fly straight anymore"

So what you want is for things to scale up smoothly. Star Wars surprisingly does it well enough in the old Canon (not even just the games here): a capital ship is a dire threat to any starfighter, but one CAN do damage to them. This is simple suicide to the average grunt, but then you get freakshows like Wedge Antilles or Maarek Stele. If this comparison feels familiar in some way, it's because PCs traditionally take on such lopsided odds in the exact same way.

In other words, the weapons and resilience may be at a severe disadvantage by default making this a stupid stupid thing if you don't even have a name or face, but the interaction between the two is 'normal'; unified rules, not two entirely different games like, say, rogue trader does it.

Notable fact:
Other than the obvious predatory markups, much of the cost of something like a fighter is massive automation. Most things should be possible for a smaller, more advanced unit, it's just that compared to just having the same thing twice as big with a control seat, having yet-another miniaturized module controlled by AI, Standard-Programming or DNI, is fucking expensive.

Remembering this philosophy would also directly allow proper scaling for parties with varying numbers of fighters and the main ship: If you know you're gonna be 3 on the PT-cruiser and 2 darting around providing fire support in fightercraft, you make sure the jump-drive and shield-shunts are automated. Added bonus: You won't have a dude whose only job every turn is the boring act of rolling his skill check twice. The one that would have been doing that is screaming something about shooting with his sword, stabbing with his ship, and finding out if his penis is cylons.

I know the devs mentioned they were going to make Starship combat an important part of it, so I'd like to hold off until I see what they do. I do understand what you're looking for though, since I need to do the same with my PC's Fighter Jet sized craft against even medium sized hijacked space ships.

Best I can think of is an idea from SCHMUPS like Gradius or Ikaruga. The space Battleship is broken up into rounds, if the PCs played their cards right and set up some distractions, and they only fight certain areas of it at first. So instead of impossible odds against the Battleship, they have to deal with the Anti-Air cannons and can score some extra points by hitting radar, then onto raiding the built-in dock and its improvised defenses, then taking out the core. How would that sound?

This is done to a degree in Fragged Empire: Fighter sized units (size 1 of a 1-5 scale) get a free command (piloting type actions but it includes things like strafing runs too) check every turn, while larger vessels are allowed officer upgrades and have room for dedicated workshops (there's a good number of character feats that give significant bonuses to a ship that has the appropriate skill workshops on it).

So while it affects stats, a small ship can be a threat to a bigger one, but does have to deal with way more hull and shield strength than it would against a smaller ship. On the other hand, unless it's utterly retarded, that massive artillery cannon will never get a bead on it.

For larger craft it depends. Like, a civilization that hates and distrusts AIs might have massively oversized ships for its tech capabilities due to the need to house entire cities inside every broadside to handle the loading-teams.

Something more starwars-y might field the butlerbots or drones in that fashion for certain.

Meanwhile something more akin to the United Federation of Planets may just completely automate the equipment itself so that a console halfway across the ship or a verbal command can operate it fully, though with the feedback risks of having ALL of those command and power systems running everywhere.

For small ships there's little choice but to miniaturize and automate the system's normal operation, though this can add quite a bit of maintenance and operating costs. You do save on a lot of salary and life-support however.

Essa is basically the crazy-prepared, actually mentally stable and reasonable adventurer dude who's been hardened to most of life's hardships. He actually bothered preparing supplies and tents for the parties, has several mules to carry goods and makes some effort to cook and take care of himself.

Turrets running off a fiber-optic network won't be hackable without physical access unless there's excessive retardation in the ship's design.

Incoms/wire-guided-drones (this is better in space than we'd give it credit for on planets) may be "remote" but are in the same situation.

A ship's linked "Force" type unit is likely more like that ship's bonded-mount, and about as hard to turn on it.

The massed drones are where hacking or ECM are most dangerous. While hacking's not quite that simple in combat rounds unless you're really dealing with something way below your tech level (or at least way lower quality than your own systems), jamming may revert them to a more primitive set of commands. Might still be a threat but you're driving tucker's kobolds back down to "they'll try to flank and fire every turn" straightforward idiot kobolds.


Damage is, of course, where these things are universally vulnerable: One funnel probably can't even handle its own firepower, as it's built to gun down larger things than it is.

Might not even be regular ECM by then anymore though. If computers have gotten too smart to fall for most false signals more than a couple of seconds at best, then perhaps one wants to move from "illusion" to all-out planar-transposition. This field distortion warfare would replace typical jamming by shredding reality into new terrains and conditions (like applying planar traits to an area): There's nothing to ignore because yes billy that really IS a 20km radius of motherfucking lava right in space. The shielded heavy fighter can burst through without too much worry, the light one had best not actually spend some turns in there, but the funnel swarm got vaped right then and there.

Some of the logistics/etc depend on the type of FTL travel - although this or these can also affect weaponry, because anything that uses up that much energy probably leads to tragic events when miscalculated. Or, you know, precisely calculated.

Say there's a series of jump-points, since it's that freespace kind of drive that's used for FTL. In that case the battleships might be what blockade jump-nodes. /pfg/ I've got myself into a bit of a dilemma and am looking for some advice. I can't go into too much detail for reasons that will become apparent. I got into one of the more popular games that recruited from the general. I was really excited initially, but as we've actually played my enthusiasm has worn off. Where it initially felt like my character would mesh well with the group that hasn't actually happened. In particular there's one other character who sucks all the air out of the room for me and my character: constantly putting himself as the center of attention and acting in direct opposition to the group's well being. The rest of the group seems to be getting along and doesn't seem to have the same problem with this other character that I do. It's gotten to the point where I'm not having fun and kind of dread every session. I want to leave the game, but I also feel guilty over taking a spot in a game that many others wanted and then flaking.
