What's the most common and frustrating rules misunderstanding you see?

hi

Druids
Are
GHEY!
>>
Most common misunderstandings I see are on the DM's side of things:

>short rests should be 1 hour long (ew)
>I shouldn't liberally reward my martials with magic items so they can keep up
>>
>>52502698
why the fuck did u put a chinese cartoon in my /5eg/ thread
>>
>>52502759
My DM doesn't even give martials plate until level 10 or so. feels bad man
>>
adding prof. bonus to attack but not damage confuses lots of ppl
>>
is onii-chan some chink character from greyhawk or something
>>
>>52502576
wild sorc
vengance paladin
thief rogue
bladelock
champion fighter

>>52502619
Maybe back at level 5, but we are rolling in gold now. Only use Chanel.

>>52502628
About 2 years fortnightly, although we would switch systems sometimes for a couple of sessions and then come back to it so I guess a bit less. It was pretty balanced between RP, combat and travelling

>>52502640
Always have some diamonds spare for it because its cheaper than other methods
>>
>>52502780
Going by the guidelines, martials should have enough gold to just buy plate armor at level 6.
>>
>>52502698
>18 str and 18 dex
>tfw no good armors to take advantage of this or methods to make both stats usable

I really don't like the armors in 5.0 It just feels weird to me that depending on what you go for it all evens out to a 17 AC.

Only so long until we become just like /pfg/ now
>>
>>52502842
And you don't add either of proficiency or ability modifier to your spell's damage, even a melee spell like Shocking Grasp.
>>
>>52502741
Moon Druids are faggots, everything else is bro-tier.

>>52502760
>>52502799
We need the occasional biting sarcastic animoo OP so that we can poke fun at /pfg/

Pay it no mind other than a quiet smirk to yourself and all will be well.
>>
>>52502831
Going between ranged and melee easily? Having OK AC even if you're caught naked? Being pretty good vs normal attacks and those that cause dex saves? I know that's not really getting at your core point, but having both of those high isn't necessarily pointless.
>>
>>52502842
you're a fucking faggot, Max
>>
Why is /5eg/ so bland? Like seriously folks you guys talk about nothing new? Is it because the game releases jack shit or is it because this general is just /OSR/'s younger brother?

I mean fuck guys even when you do the whole "lol we are degenerates" thing you all do it like sad old men.
>>
>>52502831
5e does seem to have a lot of "balance" in the sense of everything equals out to be the exact same.
>>
>>52502903
Nearly every thread there's people who are new to the game asking questions about mechanics, etc. If it seems repetitive it's because there's constantly new people playing the game. That, and spam.

>>52502903
What exactly are you expecting? New material is discussed when it's released. The UA for this month already came out and the last big things, Storm King's Thunder and Volo's Guide, were quite a while ago. At quiet moments like these the general content is pretty much answering rules questions and arguing over interpretations or house rules.
>>
>>52502889
Oh I know its just weird. I just started playing the system and was Really happy my stat rolls gave me18's in STR and DEX. I figured I would be locked down some in the first few levels but there would be a feat or something down the line that lets me use both for AC. As is I see no reason to use medium or heavy armor because light gives me so much more.

>>52502925
Yeah I noticed that. I actually kinda like it when it comes to the ADAR of the different classes and what not but it feels like they went over board with it in a lot of places.
>>
I am a Jarl irl

>>
>>52502831
That's bounded accuracy baby

Although 17 is only the cap for non-magical medium and light, and there are other ways to get it higher
>>
DMs of /tg/, at what level would YOU typically give your martials plate mail?

>A Fighter starts with Chainmail AC 16. CR 1/8 to CR 2 monsters have an attack bonus of +3, which gives them a 40% chance to hit versus the Fighter.
>At CR 3, the monsters have an attack bonus of +4, at which point you might expect the Fighter to upgrade to Splint Mail AC 17 to maintain parity.
>At CR 4, the monsters have an attack bonus of +5, at which point you might expect the Fighter to upgrade to Plate Mail AC 18 to maintain parity.

Would you say when they're regularly facing CR4 enemies or higher?
>>
>>52502903
Please, start discussion if you have something to discuss.
Speaking of...

How often do your groups meet, /5eg/? Just started DMing a weekly campaign and am already considering dropping it down to every other so I can focus more on real life shit.
>>
>>52502961
I mean hell at least things like /srg/, /pfg/, and /exg/ all at least have something to talk about in greater depth. I mean hell right after the UA comes out the general immediately goes "fuck it its stupid, ignore it"

Then there's the fact that there seems to be literally no one else out there producing content for 5e. There seems to just be no Dream Scarred Press for 5e.

>>
>>52503013
My group plays 3 weeks out of every month since one of our players likes to play Army in his spare time and goes to national guard drill.

Kobold Press puts out tons of stuff but /5eg/ gets really upset about anything not official.

And things that are official.

And everything.

Don't bully the moon druids!
>>
>>52503029
So splint mail would be a good option for them from 3-6?
>>
>>52503037
That's another thing. Why the fuck is /5eg/ so autistic about core only? I mean fuck man thats the most boring kind of game.

Like if you want to be grognards just go play OSR you will have much more to find there.

>>
>>52503081
Well you see in /pfg/ homebrew is accepted because even though it's trash, pathfinder is always trash.

When it comes to 5e you have a choice between trash homebrew and actually good official content.
>>
Is there a way for barbarians to effectively barbarian in heavy armor?
>>
>>52503065
Is the moon druid h8 a meme or what?
>>
>>52503134
So basically its because the general has a massive stick up its ass and Mearls cock in its mouth?

I mean shit guys Variety's the spice of life and all that. Thats a fact accepted in literally every other general.
>>
Our custom live-game is at level 17. My elf wizard and his gnome apprentice were spying on barbarians on an island north of Evermeet, and one of them stumbled up drunk and said "An elf and a gnome?" then he looked at the bottle in his hand, threw it down and stumbled off. I laughed because I think that's how an actual Viking would have reacted
>>
>>52503161

>>
>>52503206
Not being a troll man. I'm just asking questions. Admittedly I am asking them like a jack ass but I really wish to know why you folks aren't just a part of /OSR/ since you people really seem to want to be that.
>>
So I need some help choosing my character for an upcoming game. The current party is:
>Human Paladin (Oath of Vengeance)
>Human Warlock
>Human Fighter (Samurai)
>Half-Orc Bard
>High Elf Cleric
>High Elf Fighter (Pirate)
>Drow Elf Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
>>
Would you agree with this statement:

The five most favorite archetypes (not necessarily most powerful, just most liked archetypes) in D&D 5e are:
>Battle Master
>Great Old One
>College of Lore
>Swashbuckler
>Oath of Ancients
>>
>>52503198
Samurai? I thought that class didn't make it to 5.0 or is in the UA somewhere?

>>52503203
>>52503205
Ok was just wondering. I'm trying to get a grasp on the system. I want to keep it simple and just be a walking slab of metal that hits like a truck and can shrug off a hill giant punching him. I figured a heavy armor barbarian would do the trick until I saw the restriction in their rage. Was seeing if there was a feat or a magic item or something that let me rage in full plate.
>>
>>52503249
no?
not even close
>>
>>52503247
That's a huge party. If DM allows UA, Artificer may be fun. Otherwise, ranged fighter/ranger or a Wizard.
>>
>>52503247
Lucky Halfling Diviner.

You've got no short races, nor do you have a dedicated arcane caster. No, bards don't count.
>>
>>52503249
>>Battle Master
Absolutely

>>Great Old One
Eh, it seems Fiend wins out more often

>>College of Lore
Also absolutely

>>Swashbuckler
Probably

>>Oath of Ancients
It's 50/50 with Vengeance
>>
>>52503247
Is the half orc bard a bardgrappler? If so are we in the same party?

Anyway play a Wizard
>>
>>52503261
Just go barbarian and be a walking slab of meat and flesh. You don't need armor, you have manly pecs.
>>
>>52503247
I'd probably go with something like finding a new group with less people
If you don't want to do that, non-necromancer wizard
>>
>>52503261
A barbarian is a warrior who exemplifies mind over matter. By willing himself stronger via his rages, he becomes stronger and more able to take damage. They often come from primitive cultures who value strength and stoicism.

A fighter on the other hand is a precision trained warrior who uses weapons and armor to enhance his already formidable skills.

Just choose one and go with it.
>>
>>52503261
it's a fighter UA, the level 3 ability gives them a mini berserk that lasts a round and a half
>>
>>52503235
Because OSR sucks.
>>
>>52503261
The Samurai is a Fighter Archetype that gets a 3 times per short rest ability that works like a mini one round Rage without drawbacks.

A thing to note is AC is specificly one thing the Barbarian won't actually be good at, considering most enemies will always have Advantage against you. They tank by killing things fast, resistance to damage and having a high HP
>>
>>52503249
I think we just had a whole series of polls to determine this very thing.
>>
>>52503235
>>52503168
You know you're a massive faggot, right?

Well, I want to win this argument, but I don't want to put any effort into it, so I'm just going to post various lengths of text from a Lorem Ipsum generator and win by rights of brow-beating you until I have the last word.

Just assume it's a massive spergpost detailing why every decision you've made in life is wrong, and why every post you've made is wrong, and we'll call it good.

>>
>>52503247
DM. Steal half the party and the current DM and run your own campaign with them, the DM will thank you. Now that your compatriots have been reduced from 7 to 3 or 4, finding where you fit will be a lot easier.
>>
>>52503368
So basically you in no way can explain why /5eg/ has a massive stick up its ass?
>>
>>52503371
I had a guy in one of my groups play warlock. Turns out agonizing blast spam was pretty boring.
>>
>>52503410

>>
>>52503371
More than any other class it depends on the GM. Some are really fucking big on the whole pact patron thing.

Plus... Agonizing Blast Spam is fucking terrible for the fun factor.

because its 4chan why the fuck else
>>
>>52503303
>>52503321
Well I have the image of Alphonse in my mind so I was aiming for that. I'll probably play a fighter.

>>52503338
>>52503348
Thanks bro's I'll probably play that then.

How is unarmed in 5.0 or is that more of a monk only thing?
>>
As someone who's played in a live game weekly since 5e was released, BM fighters are very common, hunter rangers, wizards of all kinds, life clerics and thief rogues are also very popular. Monks are never played, and druids are very very rare. I've seen people who rolled druids kill them off and try something else, usually a cleric. Devotion paladins are great when played well. Humans elves and dwarves are the common races, but halflings appear sometimes and usually played by women. Never see gnomes.

>>
>>52503600
it's not rare
>>
>>52503600
Tends to be at least one every session but they rarely actually die because the party has a life cleric, a devotion paladin and a bard
>>
>>52503586
I think Fiend is pretty dull (pacts with the devil are kind of played out) and Fey is really underrated in my opinion.
>>
>>52502698
sauce?
>>
>>52503586
Every time I see Undying I'll get disappointed, it's exactly what I want for flavor from a Warlock but it's so irredeemably shit. They didn't even give it Invocations in the UA.
>>
>>52503614
>>52503606
That sounds about right. I think I've gone down at least once or twice per session for the past 4 sessions.
>>
>>52503012
I would just pay them reasonable amounts of money for a bunch of warriors risking their lives and not be all "the peasants don't have anything to pay you with" or "you find a grand total of 50 gold's worth of valuables in the dungeon and a useless magic item that's priceless somehow so you're not allowed to sell it". Enough for each party member to get several hundred gold for a completed 'quest' if they split it evenly. Or I would have the martial find plate armor on an adventurer's corpse if I feel like letting him save his money for something else he wants.

Actually trying to carefully calculate the loot and item allocation of every party member based on the arbitrary CR guidelines written by the same apes that wrote the rest of this abortion of a system is stupid.
>>
>>52503600
I'm running a game for two people. It's only happened once in about ten sessions, because if one of them drops, that effectively means game over.
>>
>>52503656
It depends a lot on party composition, tactics, and what you're fighting.
I'm running SKT so most of the players go down in 2 hits, tops, so multiattack ensures there's at least a few KOs per session.
>>
>>52503403
i wanted to do that bc there were originally only 5 guys (current DM, me, and 4 others. don't really like the current DM tho.) But one of the newer members (super close friend but we were on rough terms when i formed the orig. group) would be pissed if i didn't let him in my group.
>>
>>52503665
I always just have the armoured players happen upon some plate because I feel sorry for them.
DEX is already a good stat to invest in, they don't need any more discouragement.
>>

There are a lot of absurdly big design flaws with lots of it. I think it was lifted from stuff in previous additions and made to fit 5e, but the person that did it doesn't seem to have English, on top of not seeming to have the absolute best grasp of the rules.

It's not absurdly broken one way or the other, but there's a lot of goofy decisions. You'd probably be fine with using it if the DM was okay with it (the UA Kensai is better, if that's all you want), but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

Published? No. You'll have to find a homebrew. Google should help.

That's sad.

Do it like everyone who has no friends, join roll20 and spend months searching for campaigns, when your finally accepted, spend more weeks planning you're character just to have the DM quit 2 sessions in.

Whenever they get enough money to afford it.

It's that I've been solicited to do it for practice for my larger group and I want to get my head around it before I accept / decline

Happens every session. To be specific, the same player is making them EVERY SESSION. I have no clue why they voluntarily pick the worst times to split from the party.

What is your favorite starting quest worth a new party or run for a party?

I personally love raids on enemy bases as a starting quest, both as a player and as a DM. Not so much dungeons, but rather encampments.

White Plume Mountain, Area 17 the Boiling Bubble

The Bubble is ~35ft. across and 60ft. long.

But how tall is it? The crab is Huge, so it has to be at least 20ft. tall for him to fit (if not higher), but the adventure says someone swinging with a two-handed weapon would puncture the bubble.

Why? The reach of a greatsword is 5ft. How is i slicing open the bubble if the crab is 15ft. higher than the sword could swing?
>>
>>52504708
Part of it will be from the height of the person swinging
And presumably it isn't a flat ceiling since it's not a cube
>>
>>52504708
Oh boy this is some geometry stuff.
>>
What non combat situations might there be for a PC could get Advantage in?
>>
>>52502741
I have had someone play Druid in every game of 5e I have played ever, and I have DMd for most of those.
I really like the idea of druids and I think their powers are neat. That being said
FUCK DRUID
>>
>>52503012
I let them do it at level 3. It makes them maybe a bit too powerful at the time, but it feels fun.
>>
>>52504769

>>
>>52504708
Well bubbles are normally a sphere right? So if your standing in the middle layer it'll be 30ft up at the highest point to the top.

So I imagine the crab is standing in the center of it which can fit him and people will be running around him. I feel the Greatsword swing thing is a little weird though, I haven't read that adventure but maybe making it an Athletics check if you miss the crab to avoid swinging too far?
>>
>>52504779
It's funny, literally none of my players will ever pick Druid. I don't think any of them like the aesthetic.

Dude, there's two types of D&D player. The storyteller and the Autist. The Autist only ever plays chaotic good barbarians, warlocks and maybe paladins.
>>
>>52502698
Some stuff I tried (and failed) to assert in my last campaign:

>Persuasion is not opposed by Insight, it is opposed by a DC determined by the relationship between the two creatures and the nature of the request, so everyone does not immediately become a mind-slave of the character with the highest Persuasion
>You do not get advantage on attack rolls for flanking
>A critical miss does not mean a critical hit on the closest party member
>Commoners are able to take the Disengage action
>Detect Magic does not cause blindness
>Simulacrum is not limited to creatures of CR 1 or lower
>Being a jackass does not grant Inspiration
>Speculating out of character does not confer the Frightened condition in character
>If the source of the Frightened condition does not exist, that does not mean the Frightened creature is completely unable to move
>Efreeti are not immune to Planar Binding
>Mezzoloths are not immune to Banishment
>Owls do not have an inconsolable fear of bushes
>If the text of a spell's description states a creature obeys your commands, it does not mean they can do whatever they want
>If a wizard tries to dismiss their familiar, their alignment does not change to chaotic evil

I only stayed because they were the only 5e group in my area. I considered leaving after getting advice online and did so when the DM spazzed out when I tried to teach the Druid about his spells.
>>
>>52505042
>You do not get advantage on attack rolls for flanking

So I just took Death House and converted it to a Haunted Frat to DM for my fraternity

They're pretty into d&d, but have never ran a module before. I on the other hand have never DM'ed

Some conversion was pretty easy, Durst House looks almost like our frat's building plant, Rose and Thorn get refluffed as pledged instead of kids, and black robes into black togas

Anyone else's got any more ideas I could use that they want me to throw at a bunch of chads?
>>
>>52505075

Okay, I'll concede that point doesn't deserve to be on the list because: (1) it was the only thing the DM stated to be a houserule before the game rather than be made up on the spot like everything else (2) it was the the only inanity I was able to actually talk the DM out of.

Do Firbolgs get played much? Personally I'm a fan of their lore and the fact it's a more gentle giant type. Planing on making a Ranger but I don't know if I should go GWM Hunter, Dip a level in Druid (for Shillelagh) with PAM on a Primeval Guardian, or be a Beastmaster.

I don't hate Tritons myself. The asshole Merfolk isn't really my thing though.

I'd have to say my least favorite is either Kenku or Hobgoblin. Core only it's Tieflings, they're always so fucking edgy.
>>
>>52505307
I didn't use it in the campaign I DM for because I feel like it makes it way too easy to get advantage and kind of makes class features that give it reliably kind of useless.
>>
>>52505407
Depends on the party makeup I've found.

One issue with it is it makes swarms of enemies even more powerful and single ones even weaker.
>>
>>52505307
Except this guy's group >>52505217, this guy's >>52505393, this guy's >>52505407 and mine then I guess. It is a bad rule, single enemy encounters already generally suck due to action economy. The monsters don't need to be further screwed over because tom and frank are standing on opposite sides of them. It also means most class features that give advantage are now pointless.
>>
>>52505372
I'm not entirely sure you know what slice of life frat status quo is like.

It's a lot more mellow than that.
>>
>>52505307

>Druid casts Conjure Animals and gets eight honey badgers.

>Me: "31, natural 20."
>DM: "You don't know."
>Me: "I cast Detect Magic."
>DM: "You're blinded."
>Me: "I'm not going into that hedge not knowing what's on the other side. I tie my familiar to my staff and poke it through the hedge."
>DM: "Your familiar leaves you."
>Me: "I telepathically tell my familiar, 'Headwig, you have violated cosmic law! If you do not comply I will file a complaint to the Fey Courts and there will be repercussions.'"
>DM: "Your familiar isn't having any of it."
>Me: "Okay. Obviously the hedge is having some sort of effect on my spells. It might stand to reason that my familiar has been irredeemably corrupted, in which case I'll need a new familiar. I dismiss Headwig, permanently."
DM: "He feels hurt. You just rejected him."
Monk: "I thought you were neutral good. I'm starting to question that now."
Paladin: "I know I nearly killed you in our last few encounters, and I said I was going to buy you healing potions to make up for that since you were the only person in the party without any. But now, I take that back."
DM: "Yeah. In fact, wizard change your alignment."

I'm currently running it. Lemme give you a quick rundown.

First chapter is insanely overwhelming, the PCs have to do about 4 days worth of heavy fights in one night.
Second chapter is easy, so long as the PCs aren't totally stupid.
Third chapter is moderate.

In the middle, there's a bunch of empty, boring chapters that you can fill in with your own stuff (for example, you can put much of SKT in the middle just fine, and it even has an obvious tie in).

Finally, it has a couple cool dungeons at the end.

If you search online, you can find some amazing maps for it too.

The only people I've ever seen play Druid say it's because of Wild Shape. Whereas I've seen people play so many other characters, Wizards, Fighters, Monks, Rogues, ect, because they think the class as a whole is cool.

Don't try to test LG. As long as he's acting reasonably LG then it's fine. If you make Paladins a bitch to play and have to give up all their stuff then no one will play them for fun.

There's plenty of ways to involve acts of lawfulness in a campaign, have the character receive orders from a high ranking baron or king, etc.

If he wants to be challenged, then simply make those orders or whatever something that would be a dilemma for him or his character. But most importantly, don't try to force him to act in whatever manner you deem lawful for fear of consequence. And don't try to make him change his alignment or character if he acts in a way that clashes with his alignment, unless he wants to change.

My group is getting quite big, this last session we brought up having 2 DMs to help keep things moving along, has anyone tried this/something like this? if so, how did it work?

DMing for a group of first time players. They've just hit level 10 and now they've got property in the main city, they're thinking of buying a ship, and they've gained a large bit of renowned.

They're all genuinely loving it and are heavily invested in the world. Feels good man.

There's only two loose ends they haven't tied up and they're both related to the big bad. My only fear thus far is that they've really built up one of the loose ends and I think they suspect him of being a big bad. He's really just a minor villain connecting two parts of the plot. What are your favorite narrative ways to reveal a bad guy isn't as hot shit as your party imagines him to be?

I'm pretty sure I know how I'm going to handle it, but I'm just curious.

For being such a large and complex part of the game, the PHB does a really terrible job of explaining the intricacies of spellcasting. Would it have killed them to include a few non-ambiguous examples and illustrations?

Shit, the rules for AoEs are all about whether tiles are excluded from the blast due to total cover (whether a fireball or sleet storm goes around a corner), nothing about how much of a tile needs to be within a circle to be considered an affected tile. Depending on where you place your origin point and calculate tiles, the AoEs for spheres can be wildly different shapes and may encompass areas larger than a square of similar size, which is the opposite of what should be happening. They changed cone calculations, too, and people still fuck up line effects.

Goddamnit, Wizards. I bet their own internal playtesters don't handle the same case in identical ways.
>>
>>52505307

>>
>>52506781
The easiest way is to literally have the players go after him. No amount of paid guards, alarm spells, or magical circles will stop them from busting into his manor office and glaring him down. He may have a spell to toss or a magical weapon to wield, but it'll become apparent to everyone that he's not as hot as he made himself out to be.
>>
>>52506804
Maybe the banshee wants to keep the adventurers there as slaves, forced to remind her of her beauty constantly.

There's tons of reasons and ways to make players survive all of them falling unconscious.
>>
>>52506740
I'm actually kind of on your side here. Somewhat.
Here's the thing. I think you were right in that, in general, just killing them off and making it a TPK as in "you die, roll new characters" would've been a bad move. And that a good DM changes things up to the enjoyment of the party and the group as a whole.

However, I do believe you robbed them a bit of the true experience of Tomb of Horrors, and that's fine if everyone is okay with it. But if I had been in your position, where the party was weak and fighting a powerful demilich, I would have killed them. But done my best to do the final scene justice. Especially because they came so far Might have even given them a final "death round" where they were allowed to RP their final moments as group and tried to pump some inconsequential damage into the demilich as they fall.

Few people realize how memorable failure can be, and that's why tomb of horrors is so infamous and fun.

I do think it's silly that the wail skill reduces hit points to zero. It seems apparent to me that it's meant to be something similar to the scream of a mandrake, which is said to instantly kill any who hear it.

Personally, I would rewrite the skill to instead inflict a condition, probably paralysis on anyone that hears it and fails the check past a certain level, maybe 10. A low level adventurer probably would immediately faint/become incapacitated by such a horrible scream, but a seasoned adventured, probably less so.

Isn't that the great thing about roleplaying games? You don't have to follow the rules as if they're the word of god, make shit up if it makes the experience more fun for everyone.

The DC's 13, there's a very small chance that it's going to take out everyone in a party of level 20's.

Monks have amazing saves, Paladins have the save boost, Fighters can reroll if they even fail and most ranged characters will not even be in the 30ft radius.

Hell most parties will kill her before she even acts from a distance.

Pockets of gas in caverns and mines which contain no oxygen; usually nitrogen and/or CO2. If you walk into one, you just fucking pass out and suffocate quietly in your sleep. Then the guy who saw you drop fucking dead walks over there and tries to pull you out, but he gets KO'd too. Then the third party members figure you've all just hit a sleep trap, so he creeps forward real careful-like, makes a few Arcana checks, and tries to drag you out by hooking your belts with a stick, but he also passes the fuck out.

You use a candle because it extinguishes before you suffocate and tells you to GTFO. Of course, the danger here is that you might also hit a pocket of flammable gas and just blow yourself up, which is why you want to use your candle to make a makeshift safe lamp, which provides illumination and early warning of various kinds of gas pockets without the risk of blowing them up.
>>
>>52507321
Nitrogen gas. It puts the candle out, because of the lower oxygen content in the air.

I generally agree that summoning shit in this game is a great way to make the DM hate you, because it will probably slow down combat.

But hear me out.
What the best way to make a character based on summoning shit?
Or alternatively, what's the best way to play a pet-based class?

Summoning shit would be cool because you'd be able to have some variety. I think the key to not annoying everyone would be to KNOW what you're going to be summoning before you do so, or don't do it. And they're gonna just move in and attack hostiles unless you've already got a plan ready to go from the start. That would be the rule of etiquette I would follow.
For this concept I consider the conjurer, the druid UA shephard, and warlock (chain).

Now for a pet I immediately consider the beast master ranger (revised). But if I were taking this option I'd like to do all I could to buff the pet and do as little fighting myself.

What, in your opinion, is the most fun out of these I mention? Take into consideration, minimum detriment to the fun of the rest of the party.

You can't really do it in 5e, but pathfinder's summoner almost had it right. Hear me out:

The standard, out of the book summoner has you - a caster - and your eidolon, which is customizable, but the most common form is a melee beatstick. The class gets bogged down because it can ALSO use summon monster spells and has a spell list that is frankly OP, and the archetypes make it worse.

What would work in 5e is a weak caster class focused on buff spells, and a customizable pet. Limit it by saying that you and your pet share the same initiative and have only one action between the two of you, but separate movement/bonus actions/reactions, and limit your spells to buffs only, and it might be balanced.
>>
>>52508467
Wasn't there a class in 4e that functioned similarly to summoner? You could bring up a spirit and control it. I think it was Shaman?
>>
>>52508598
I didn't do much in 4e besides seeing how many teleportation powers I could get as a swordmage/warlock (the answer is damn near all of them), but that sounds familiar.
