A player in my group is using Hexblade warlock. It sometimes happens where he'll curse a target, and then go to 0 HP before that target dies, and then another party member kills that cursed target. In this situation would he still gain the HP and come back from his death saving throws? The spell doesn't mention anything about it falling off if the warlock dies, only the 1 minute timer.

I have a revised ranger in my game, a deep stalker.

Had to adjust his first turn bullshit though, he was trivializing encounters.

I made it so that instead of always getting an extra attack and advantage on those who haven't moved on the first turn of combat, it's now a once per short rest ability that grants him the same thing, but can be activated on any turn.

That's kind of a neat concept. Anyone know if there's a homebrew or something out there for a class that functions kind of like a necromancer, but instead of raising other dead corpses he raises himself? Or maybe some of his abilities are only triggered by hitting 0 HP, and he has some sort of mechanism for bringing himself back? It would have to be a high risk/reward if his goal is be near death.

After the SCAG I honestly don't have high hopes for setting material this edition. Maybe it was just the fact the very first book we got was set in the worst setting, in the worst part of it only but it wasn't that great. Volo's is good, but that's just monsters.

Party has spent..... two months, ingame and out doing side quests and other things.

They are level 7, started at 1

They just killed venomfang, now an adult dragon, and searching neverwinter forest for cragmaw castle

I've introduced the lords alliance as a kind of military arm of neverwinter, and a small group of knights searching for sildar and unraveling the black spider.

My question is, should the knights have already been to cragmaw and saved the dwarf - or should I have the dwarf die?

I'm thinking of making the lords alliance antagonistic but good rivals for the party, to be flabbergasted that there are other forces of good.

What if it's a small selection of feats? Maybe further restricted for the 1/2 casters.

I'd say the good options would be Martial Adept, Skilled, Any of the Armored feats, Heavy Armor Master, and Crossbow Expert.

Any others? I'd never allow powergamer feats at this level, like Lucky (I hate that feat so much) or Alert.

There's no gap between martials and casters, they fill completely different roles in a party. Balance issues come from gaps between the different martial classes and between the different caster classes.
Example: Sorcerers are just wizards but without all the archetypes and a pitiful number of spells.
Fighters rely on short rests to compete with other martial classes and many groups never take short rests.
Paladins are fucking gods.
The feats like PAM/GWM/SM/SS/CE are all so good that a martial player who takes them is likely to make a martial player who didn't look like an invalid.
The only issue I have between a martial and a caster right now is that Bards are clearly superior skill monkeys to Rogues, which leaves the Rogue's specialty as just being a low damage skirmisher.

Anons? Quick question: in 3.5, there were at least two different variants of Flesh to Stone that I'm aware of: Flesh to Ice in the Frostburn supplement, and Curse of Spilt Water (turns a victim into water - and technically it's a Disintegrate variant, I guess) in Dragon Magazine #334.

In 5e, would you bother making these seperate spells, or would you just make it a houserule that Flesh to Stone can instead change the victim's corpse into any inert inanimate material (stone, wood, ice, water, etc)?

Fucking this. Barbarians may even have it worse, because one of the two archetypes they get out the door is almost objectively inferior to the other one, their rages last one minute, and they get at most six of them until they hit 20.

Im pretty new to Dnd and I have a question about Domain spells for a cleric. At 1st level I get to choose 2 level 1 spells. I chose Trickster cleric, which at level 1 gives me access to Charm person and Disguise self. Does that mean I get 2 level 1 spells, plus Charm person and disguise self? (giving me 4 level 1 spells to start). Or does it only give me the benefit of having those spells prepared if I happen to choose them?

So my players got a TPK inside a dungeon awhile ago.

Now they're going back to the same dungeon.

Before they died they stuffed all their good items inside a bag of holding and attempted to hide it.

I know they're going to go and try look for it now with new characters.

I've got a fun way to pass the time for you, /5eg/.

Take broken character concepts. Nuke Druid, Bugbearmont, Lore Wizard/Thunder Domain Cleric, and make them have a decent backstory to explain them. Any broken character concept, but with an interesting backstory that makes sense.

Make a character so good that even the most munchkin-hating DMs would feel a twinge of "maybe I let him in with this."

Yes, redemption but we are a somewhat new party. Without getting into the story, we've all sort of just overcome this ordeal and now we've got some time to rest so everyone was talking about their past.

My character fudged a lie because the cleric was able to insight into it and he knows I was making things up regarding my past. I'm a Mystic and I was thinking of mind controlling him into forgetting about it but obviously that continues the cycle of Evil.

Hey /tg/ I need a bit of advice. I'm about to join a group where we all start level one, and the rest of the group is a War Cleric, a Battle-Master Fighter, a Stone Sorcerer, and a Rogue. The DM has said we'll be doing Tales from the Yawning Portal, I'm pretty amped. Where I need the advice is in regards to what I should play.

I've been thinking and I've narrowed it down to a Land Druid (either Forest or Mountain, and race will probably be either Firbolg or Hill Dwarf), a High Elf Abjuration Wizard, or an Aasimar Lore Bard. I'm apprehensive about playing a bard since I've been playing one since early October at the local Adventurer's League, and I'm sort of getting burned out on playing spellcasters (especially bards). But I'm worried the group won't have the heals or the casting where-with-all that comes with casters. I'm leaning towards the Abjuration Wizard for the Int skills that come with it, and the self-sustainability so that I don't feel like a huge burden on the group.

Or I could ignore those feelings and do what the DM says and "Play what you feel like would be fun!" Which would either be a Aasimar Paladin or a Human variant Monk. My reservations with doing that is the overall survivability of the group.

Thoughts? I'll take suggestions.

From a gameplay perspective? Sure, just remove one of the languages you get (Celestial and either Abyssal or Infernal could work) and limit the resistance carryover to a 30ft circle instead of everyone.

From a fluff perspective, you realize Clerics are just good warlocks, right? They both make pacts with higher beings for power, and get perks depending what pact/domain they get.

Life domain. He's really interesting. Plays a sort of wandering doctor type who was motivated by a massacre a long time ago. Long story short, we agreed (OOC of course) that I was a proponent (incidentally) of that massacre as my ASsassin Guild botched a job and it wound up getting a lot of people killed.

so you can see there is a natural dilemma in me revealing my past to him because it's a can of worms that might lead to some serious fracturing. The thing is, my character is motivated to try and redeem himself and really does his best to maintain an aura of goodness and good behavior. I am a Soul Knife, occassionally I slip into fits of madness due to it being one of my Mystic quirks but other than that I've done an okay job so far. But after last session I am worried.

It's more of a "People can die twice, comeback, take a 1 hour rest and go at it again". Honestly I will admit the main gripe that jumped out at me is I have a Zealot Barbarian in my party so thinking about an EB machine that can constantly revive the suicidal fucker... Isn't good.

It's most likely balanced but also feels a little weird on Warlocks. I personally don't particularly like the fluff of a Divine Warlock, but whatever floats your boat.

Or did you make a Fighter who learned how to survive with the mantra, "Use anything, take anything to live?" Tavern Brawler feat, so your backstory of surviving on the streets makes sense, because what kind of urchin would have a sword or dagger?

Or hell, you want a once pious, devote worshipper of the Light, who was about to die to a military raid on his church, until, seconds from death, an Archfey offered a pact to give them the power to survive? Then take Magic Initiate for your Warlock, and let them know Cleric spells on top of their Warlock list, so it makes sense.

Even in Roleplaying, a V.human is better. Unless your backstory is so bland, there was nothing your character did before being an adventurer that would make them interesting in any way (or had specialties outside of what any feat could offer)

Let's assume a level 5 Druid and Wizard. A Wizard can do an average of 28 damage against the Druid with Fireball.

A Druid can turn into a Crag Cat which is the ultimate Wizard fucker and after burning both his 3rd level spells fireballing the druid. If he manages to reduce the form to 0hp. The druid can do it again.

Keeping in mind the Druid has +3 to all physical Saves, Advantage against all single target spells, can pounce the Wizard, have a Spike Growth underfoot so the Wizard can't run and burn all his Spellslots for HP as a bonus action.

Please tell me what spell the Wizard's going to cast?

Call Lightning is a hell of a spell.

How would you feel about Wow-like totems instead of wildshape? I personally don't like it that much, they've tried it in an unearthed arcana I believe and I don't think it really fits D&D. Out of combat it wont be good enough, and in combat it'll be too good (because combat is more static than WoW).

Probably just going for some kind of "Channel Divinity" equivalent and getting upgrades at 4th and 8th is the easiest option.

If they land both sharpshooter shots they're dishing out an average of 41 damage a turn at will, assuming +4 dex mod.
You're dead in an instant. Without sharpshooter they're looking at about half that.

Yup. Casting time is treated as Concentrating on a spell for the whole time.

So if you're casting a 1 minute spell in battle it's like casting a concetration spell of 1 minute. Lasts ten rounds and you have to make con checks to keep it if you get damaged.

On the bright side, I think you can actually keep concentration on something else cast while you're casting the spell, so that's nice. Wall of Force for the rescue

In actuality it's pretty fun. Unless you're Wot4e in which case you'll just burn through ki too quickly even taking tons of short rests. And you'll be sad. But I've seen some people still enjoying it, regardless.

The best thing to do is take advantage of your mobility because combat is otherwise so static in this game. Once you have the ability to run up walls and shit you'll be able to scale huge structures in a single turn provided you use a ki point. Enjoy that.

On my list of spells I put a small C next to things as well as a note of duration for things that require concentration. Something like C 10m, or C 1h.

I also use a coin or something to help me remember when I'm concentrating on something and whether or not I should make a save.
When it's on say, heads, for example, I'm concentrating. I get hit, check the coin, heads? Make a save. If I stop concentrating, flip it to tails.

It's something I do when DMing as well to help me remember when enemies have effects up or on "cooldown" with stuff like dragons breath if I've got a lot of enemies to track.

One idea I had was Archer Kensai Monk.

They can grab Sharpshooter, use their +3 Weapon boost, use their bonus action for the shitty pummel or martial arts stun someone before running away for 2 Advantage attacks.

Worst case scenario, they're less dependent on their bonus action for damage, less risk and can spend the Flurry Ki on dodges and stuns more.

Could also pick up Crossbow Expert and dip Fighter for Archery. Need less Dexterity with the +2 to hit.

Another one that popped into my head is an Alpha werewolf that will keep running away and hiding. Can call in 1d4 appropriately leveled minions with an action as long as there's less then 3 around. You'd have to give them a reason to be chasing the thing though.

Or a town being attacked by various Demons. There's a big guy who's the usual buffed HP guy with Legendary actions. Catch is the party's also being paid to protect townsfolk from a small swarm of demons, every two rounds or so something happens they have to deal with or people will be pissed at them (Pull someone out of a burning house, save a kid being chased by a minor demon and making sure to keep the big ones attention from the townsfolk are all ideas). Already planning on this. Going to play up the cloud giants stealing the night stone and give zephyros some things to talk about relating to giants. Also going to play up the hill giants in Goldenfields. It was already attacked once by giants before the group got there. Also planning on having one of the defender npcs being an expert on giants to give the party some background.

Gnolls are always fun. They have all the normal Gnoll types but you can also throw in Demons and Slaves they've captured. Party might hesitate (Depending on the characters) if a Gnoll has a crazy slave Berserker or two on a leash he uses to stop people getting close while he hits people with a whip.

Don't be scared to let Giants kill NPCs the party likes, or even better one of their party members. Nothing like revenge to motivate people.

Makes them feel better about the +11 to hit negating their AC.

Some of the encounters are pretty damn rough. Early on in the section you mention, 7 cultists, 2 cult fanatics, and and invisible stalker for a level 4 party is no joke. Assuming your party are murder hobos like mine. Additionally the module basically says "zephyros just chills and studies the battle unless everyone is going to die"

Yeah, I plan on having them do Goldenfields and triboar. I am going to have Goldenfields basically be "giants 101" and when they get to triboar the fire giants are going to be merciless and militant about getting that vonindod piece.

I'd guess oathbreaker for pure paladin, multiclassing with UA you could get a couple warlock levels for the pseudosmite with any easy advantage engine to hyper nova on crits.

Paladin you should also consider utility. I run ancients/fey lock and the survivability and group help with auras is amazing.

Top damage would probably be paladin and fighter for action surge? For 4+ attacks with smites
