Last thread's discussion on the Draconis Combine was good. Felt a like a breath of fresh air.

Would anyone like to continue it?

What are your favorite Drac mechs, tanks, battle armor or aerospace fighters?

Do you have guys have a favorite DCMS regiment?

I like the Dragon that got the upgrade so it runs 6/9. Damn that thing can be a troll against lights and mediums like Commandos that try to retreat from it.
>>
>>52359149
For BA it's definitely the Kage. It has a nice role to it, and it's one of the few BA that has a dedicated space operations setup.
>>
>>52359149

The friggin' Kishi- despite the DCMS focusing on light suits which have few advantages over mediums for basic roles- is fantastic and somehow manages to be interesting despite some quirky choices. 6 points of reflective armor means even a PPC can't stop one, it's ground speed is fantastic with the mechanical booster, and while the HMG is not a very good weapon they put it in the best location possible.
The only way it could be better is if the DCMS used some clan tactics with 5-man units, but that 5th member replaced the HMG for some kind of ECM or similar "tactical" tool like a grenade launcher to shield the rest of his point from other infantry.

For mechs its either the Panther(my first favorite mech) or the Komodo.

BA has to be the Kanazuchi.

Tanks...um...I honestly don't know.
>>
>>52363470
The Sabaku Kaze is a pretty sweet hover tank.
>>
>>52363212
>am I crazy for liking MRMs

Yes. Every last one of them should be scrapped, return deadfire missiles to legal, and then just have rocket launchers as their only legacy. Then all those garbage Drac MRM boats could be refitted to normal missile boats and just loaded with dumb rounds for the same effect, but with the flexibility of loading the bins with something else when needed or even in a spare bin on the same mission.
>>
Can someone explain MRMs to me?

I've only ever played introtech.
>>
>>52363212
Accuracy reduction immediately makes any weapon dumpster-tier, since it's so easy to push your to-hit numbers to 11 or more.
>>
>>52363601

My players learned to HATE dead-fire missiles after running into a mech gang on Galatea during the Civil War. They totally underestimated how nasty they could be when I told them I had to roll three dice and take the lowest two.

They may be out of production in Drac space but I've ruled that smaller arms companies still produce them, especially out in periphery-land. That combined with Drac stores of them make it so that if you really want em you can probably find em.
>>
>>52363747
Implying rocket launchers are less than good.
>>
>>52363825
Rocket launchers are the exception, yes. They cost basically no tonnage, and as long as one ignores the existence of 15s and 20s with their retarded range reduction, RL10s are pretty fucking hilarious.
>>
>>52363745
they are medium range missiles with dumb heads. you have more missiles but they are harder to hit the target

better question: why haven't you played Total Warfare yet?
>>
>>52363745
Take LRMs. Now remove their guidance package to make the missiles lighter and smaller with the same warhead. Then cram a shitload of them together. Now you've got MRMs.

MRMs have a weird 3/8/15 range, and a flat +1 to hit penalty. They do one damage per missile, and fire 10/20/30/40 missiles at once. On a weight basis, the MRM 10 is the same weight as an SRM 6, and the MRM 20/30 weigh the same as the LRM 15/20, though they generate more heat than the LRMs. The damage potential is great, and they get really good ammo per ton, but their shit range brackets and the static +1 to hit mean it's nearly impossible to LAND those high-damage volleys, and if you start boating them to take advantage of the lightweight ammo you run out of sinks quickly. Oh, and no alternate ammo of any sort, which never helps.
>>
>>52363917
I live in the midwest and have difficulty finding people to play with. If you know of any groups in southern Michigan I'd be interested.
>>
Silly question but did the Dracs make Inner Sphere Standard?
And how did their battle armor built up to the 3060s rate? Only one I'm really familiar with is the Kage because the DEST units used them in their raid on Huntress.
>>
>>52363936
Does Apollo make MRMs less shit?
>>
>>52364302
Yes. IS standard is called that because every state made it. The Dracs made all the original state specialist suits, Kages, Zuchis, Raidens what have you since they were the earliest Field Manual. That's also why they kinda suck and later ones are better.

>>52364389
Yeah, but from extra shit to kinda shit is still shit ya know?
>>
>>52364389
If you're running a 30 or 40, yeah it helps a lot. They're not great, but if you're already spending all that tonnage for some reason, another ton isn't too much hardship for a significant benefit.

Useless with 10s and 20s though.
>>
The sheer determination and autism demonstrated in the last thread with the missing DCMS regiments has me wanting to ask if anyone here could do something similar with the Combine's military production for 3025 and/or 3050.

Because from what I can gather they built basically everything on Luthien, had a Panther factory in or around Alshain, might have built something on New Samarkand and Al Na'ir, and captured Davion factories on Quentin.
>>
So, for those interested, I'll be getting the weekly-ish /btg/ MM game going in an hour or two. Details will be given out on IRC. Probably gonna start with a Solaris-style brawl to get everyone familiar with each other.

No Hassid Ricol betraying the Combine, no Alshain Avenger suicide attack on the Ghost Bears, etc, etc.

What might the effects in the 3060s and beyond have been?
How different might the Sandoval invasion of the Combine during the FCCW have looked?
>>
>>52365921
>>52365916

Fun fact, the bulk of WoB mechs were classic 3025'ers and 3050 upgrades mixed with Project Phoenix and 2750 stash machines. A Toyama, Legacy, Grand Crusader sort of thing was only about 10% of their forces.

>>
>>52366044
And your citation?
>>
>>52366044
The TROs suggest otherwise. The 2750 stashes were tapped out after Tukayyid, and Terra's factories set to building the new divisions.
>>
>>52366099
The novels where it's specifically mentioned like Double Blind, the short stories where it's specifically mentioned like almost all the ones in Fire For Effect, as well as the description of the WoBM forces.

You don't build as many regiments as they did by being picky. The 3025'ers were as common in their stashes as 2750 since a lot of them were Star League machines. They stole 2/3 the Project Phoenix production in the inner sphere and were even the brains behind the project in the first place. They also restored a number of destroyed core world factories to cranking out TRO:3025 and 2750 things like Crabs and Grasshoppers. Not to mention every FWL mech chassis they could buy, borrow or steal. Orions, Hunchbacks, Trebs, Stalkers and all the rest alongside Grand Titans, Hammers, Albatrosses and so forth.

>>52366159
Terra wasn't coming online full swing until after 3058. They made a lot of stuff, but even things like Wolf and Blake mentions that even the Shadows full of the nicest gear aren't all new production and the Protectorate militias don't have hardly any new gear at all.
>>
>>52366259
I read Double Blind and a good many of those stories and that doesn't ring a bell. Can you copy-paste a blurb from one?
>>
>>52366259
I'll have to review their RATs again.

Honestly their Star League and classic gear is cooler than the "OC-Do Not Steal" designs so I don't have a problem with it.
>>
>>52366329
The one that really hammers it home off the top of my head is the one with the remnants of the 9th? Comstar Army in Case White fighting their way through the cities on Earth. Plus I think also the Mars battle and one of the Harlech ones.

Double Blind didn't have much other than talking about the stashes planted for the pirates and St Jamais muttering to himself about his glorious shiny new rare Grand Crusader he had to leave at home while he was driving a regular Awesome 8Q from their normal army units for deniability.
>>
>>52365781

20 YU and so on indicate the New Oslo plant was going mostly if not entirely to the FRR before being seized by the Clans.

>>52366039

>What if...

Then the Dracs might have had a pre-3145 storyline in which they weren't a bunch of gibbering, infighting retards. Which is completely impossible under FASA and only seems possible under CGL because they've refused to advance the timeline for so long.

>>52366159

I think he means that the initial defectors were rolling in SLDF-era machines or 3025 basic models and those made up a fair portion of the known WoB, which means the hidden in plain sight Divisions had to be the same. But newer production would be the norm for Divisions revealed later in the Jihad, especially the MD.

So if you guys were generating all mech Level IIs for WoB, what might you give them for A and B Militia, MD, and Protectorate Militia?
Like example Level IIs.
I'm guessing the MD wouldn't be all Celestials, for example.
>>
>>52366701

MD wouldn't be all Celestials, but aside from the last-ditch defence of Terra or very isolated occasions you won't see them anywhere else.

A Militia is mostly new production. B Militia is a mix of old and new. PM gets the oldest stuff and rarely have some new gear like the Titan II.
>>
>>52366701
I'm gonna ignore the 'all mech' part of that question and give you this.

As far as year is concerned, I was looking at around the Dark Ages, but I haven't settled on the exact year because I have to do some timeline research to see when said faction could exist or when it'd make the most sense, if ever. Also, where, hence the need for maps.

Yeah fuck technology, education, established fluff, or the myriad facts about the Canopian military-industrial complex being on the verge of collapse. I actually like the texturing behind the text; I was going to suggest it but I wasn't sure if you were designing it for print or not. If you were, it'd be too much trouble to get watermarked paper to print it on. But stark white is too hard on the eyes, so this is nice. Grey/offwhite/something would also be okay if the texture proves unpopular. I'd also accept coffee mug rings.

I don't like the busy sidebar and top, but others do, so I'm in the minority. Of the busy ones you've done, this one looks the best. It's simplistic and conveys the "tech" feeling without too many bobs or widgets.

Speaking of Megamek, is there any way to turn off the "lighting" in the options menu?

There have been a few times where ATB put me on Elevation 11 terrain and during Pitch Black settings. Combine that with the ECM bubbles and I couldn't see shit, especially since the hexes don't have "Smart" outlines or text that change color when the hexes are too dark.

>>52369866
Thanks for the feedback. It's a good note that even if we don't end up doing texture the pure white should be toned down - not something I'd thought about.

For the top and sidebar, the frame around the faction emblems is necessary to account for the clipping issues some of them will have. Beyond that it's just two extra lines. So hopefully it ends up being best of both worlds for most people. Personally I tend toward the simpler.

Newb, gonna be trying out some clan battle armour - elementals. I've heard that they can jump alright, but whats the best way to transport them? Best way is usually to stick them on a fast Omni like the Fire Moth/Dasher, Ice Ferret/Fenris or Viper/Dragonfly and then go. You can transport them with vehicles but that tends to be a second-line thing. The Anhur and OmniTanks like the Epona or Hephaestus are generally the best.

IIRC you can only let troopers off at the start or end of your movement and not along the way. It might even be only at the start of your movement, it's been a long time since I played using mechanised infantry.

In most cases, they're carried by hooking onto an OmniMech and using that as a ride. In other cases they're dropped in, either from orbit or low orbit drop, usually by DropShip. Otherwise they just footslog. Not a lot of transport vees for BA in the Clans, though for regular infantry that's a different story.

The UI takes some getting used to but it's generally transparent about showing all the rolls.

The "basic concepts" to grasp about Battletech is that:
-it's hex-based: thus LoS and positioning is abstracted compared to scale miniature wargames, where everything is based on the scale
-turn order is not fixed; players roll for initiative at the beginning of each turn and activate units one at a time. Since you don't move all your units at once, the order in which you choose to move has significant strategic value, since moves can be made in reaction to other moves earlier in the turn.
-almost all rolls are on 2d6, which makes +1 bonuses quite significant at cetain points and less significant at other points due to the nature of the bell curved probability.

>pre 3070

Fug, no Ursa for me.
>>
>>52373751
The video games in particular generally don't go later than the FedCom Civil War (maybe MWO will be the first to go further), so this might be another reason why most players prefer to stick to the 3070s or earlier. Or maybe it's the other way around? Most people stick to the 3070s so people make video games for them?
>>
>>52373826

So far as I can tell, it's primarily due to vidya. As BT gets a lot of its new players due to the vidya, that also tends to be the limits of what they're comfortable with.
>>
>>52373771
No Antlions either.

But at least you've got Barghests!

(And Scorpions)
>>
>>52373842
I'd also say things probably get somewhat more complicated in terms of mech and weapon choices as you go further. In 3025 you have 3-4 types each of ACs, LRMs, SRMs, Lasers, and the PPC; simple stuff.

As the eras progress though you add on a lot of new stuff and subsystems which change the game a lot - double heat sinks and/or Clantech are big ones, but ever smaller weapon upgrades and the like are harder to account for.
>>
>>52374218

That's absolutely a thing. There's a reason why I started my campaign players in a grogtech setting with the occasional rare bit of lostech - it doesn't entirely overwhelm the new player, but gives them something to look forward to and keep an eye out for. Also, it limits your ability as a GM to accidentally be mean as fuck; not to say you can't, but that such things will generally be less intentional.

High production, with a strong emphasis on jack-of-all-trades heavy/assault 'Mechs and extremely nasty Lights and Mediums that nobody plays with. Missiles for DAYS, because (again) high production capacity. They also put a high priority on pilot survival in most of their designs, or at least on making them beefy.

Notably, they refit a lot of long-range focused designs to bracket-fire better, or for better heat-management; for example, the classical Lyran refits of the Thunderbolt and Archer swap in SRMs, while their Beemer drops the PPC and MGs for racks of missiles as well. In fact, the "Marik" Awesome refits are exactly the kind of shit the Lyrans do on the regular, but with less ammo.

Later on they become the poster children for fast melee designs and nasty fuckers with LB-20X variants.

...Also, speaking of Twenties, the Caps use the AC/20 more than anyone else. It's another one of their signature-ish weapons - the FedSuns, for all their supposed autocannon fetish, usually stay at tens or lower. Davions use gausses when they need a big gun, or strip low-caliber autocannon for PPCs and LLs, and DAMN THE HEAT FULL SPEED AHEAD.

For the Lyrans I'm not sure why they do it. For the Mariks they so many of their designs from 3025 use PPCs I can see why keeping them all stocked would lead to shortages and force them to prioritize.

Not who you are replying to but I'd like to help as a Steiner boo myself.

First in the lights their most famous and a ton of fun is the commando. it's a great little hole puncher.
For Mediums the Griffin, this mech is awesome, it's great to learn on since if you are starting off you want to keep intro tech.

These two work decently together esp to learn.

Some other Lyrans
The Wolfhound, a favorite of mine and many others it's heavy for a light a hard to kill and hits well never runs out of ammo either.

The hatchetman, and it's cool for just what you think about it, it has a hatchet for smashing stuff. Pretty easy to use, a touch thin on armor but a nice bigger gun too.

There's a downgrade/intro tech lynx in the medium groups as well that's a good way to learn heat curving.

While it's later on in cannon the Valkyirie became a Lyran mech, so if you are hurting to try things, it's sorta an option.

>>
>>52382340
twice as bad as the original hermes. for 64 mmore bv, you get the exact same damage output at slightly better ranges, but at half the speed, and the inclusion of ammo so you can go BOOM.
>>
>>52382381

Dude, the arm is in the process of exploding from the inside. PPCs don't blow up.
>>
>>52382443
Pretty sure the intention there was smoldering internals, hence the reason the PPC isn't firing (also why there's red hot stuff; PPCs have internal capacitors that can melt down when damaged, though not for extra damage like gauss capacitors/coils). Don't recall where I read that though, so no citations, sorry.

>>52382413
>>52382594
What about the value of the AC5's long range and low heat?
>>
>>52382842

Overall, the tonnage it takes up generally isn't worth it, unless you get to play with special munitions.
>>
>>52382842
a LRM system is superior if you want to do that.
In fact, replacing a AC/5 with a two MLs and two LRM-5s is going to provide superior firepower at all ranges while saving you a ton overall
and in general, if you've only got one of them, there is literally no reason to use a AC/5 over a PPC, which has the exact same range but does twice the damage, and there is practically no light mech that actually needs to manage heat so badly that a AC/5 is a better choice in that regard. even with the fucking Toro, you're still better off with the alternating between LRMs and the PPC rather than using an AC
>>
>>52382842
On most designs, swapping an AC/5 for a LL nets you a slight loss of range for the ability to brawl and not use ammo. Since the AC/5 is, at a minimum, 9 tons (8t+1t ammo) you can easily swap in a LL (5t) and 4 SHS (4t) and only gain 3 heat generation, which is not a big deal at all.

AC/5s are not main guns. They are secondary guns unless the intended role is AA. And I say this as an autocannonophile
>>
>>52382842

What about 9 fucking tons and a chance to go boom?

Also, hermes 2 only goes 6/9, and it completely lacks the armour to be going that slow. Hermes 1 is better all around, especially since insane speed means that it can easily close to ML range.
>>
>>52382842
The AC/5 is over all probably the single worst weapon in introtech, though the AC/2 is very close.
It's literally twice as heavy as it should be for the performance it delivers, and ammo explosions are just so massively shitty in introtech that anything that uses ammo is suspect as fuck already, so the AC/5 manages to not only be inefficient, but actively dangerous to keep around

I think the Catapult is a good mech to teach with:

- Ammo weapons and energy weapons
- min range on LRMs
- fighting at different ranges (the old Catapult usually fires off their 8 full salvos and then pushes in to laser shit up)
- Jump jets
- some simple heat management too, without it being a crazy Davion Rifleman heat curve into the heart of a quasar

Put it up against something shit like a Jagermech so noob gets a nice win under their belt.
