Oh, those guys aren't actually Bretonnian. They're a very very old Regiment of Reknown, made back in 1984. Though I suppose if they were brought into the newer fluff, they'd probably be Bretonnian.

>The island outpost of Fyrus seemed a good place for the monks of the holy order of Saint Origo to build a monastery. True - Fyrus did lie but a dozen miles from the coasts of Araby, it was the birth place of the revered Mullah Aklan'd and its harbours did control the main east-west trade route; but the Brothers of the Holy Order of Saint Origo decided Fyrus would make an ideal place to rest and meditate. They started by kicking out all of the natives and building a huge fortress. This they decided to call the 'Holy Monastery of the Divine Origo.'
>When the good brothers found their prayer disturbed by Arabian pirates and the continued complaints of the disinherited they reacted in the only way they knew how. They built fleets, wiped the waterways clean of eastern ships, and fired every Arabian port within a hundred miles. For the purposes of the crusade the Grand Master of the Order designed the special uniform and banner which is illustrated here.
>The Knights returned to a life of peace and contemplation, disturbed only by annual excursions burning, looting and destroying all along the coasts of heathendom. After a few years they were shaken from their solitude by vast armies of Easterners, who lay seige to, and eventually destroyed, the monastery. Many of the Knights were slain in this unprevoked attack but a large company escaped. Unde their new Grand Master, Sir John Tyrweld, and aided by the Order's Champion Donna Don Domingio, the Order reformed in the West.
>From then on the company crusaded extensively against the enemies of all right thinking folk and gained a considerable reputation from their enemies. Amongst the Goblins they became renowned as 'The Frothers', whilst the Easterners dubbed Sir John 'The Foaming One'.

I feel like Skaven are gonna get worked in with some wider Under-Empire update or DLC. They'll have to create a map underneath the current game map to get them to work - there's not enough for them to work with on the surface. They'll probably also include Orcs and Goblins, as well as Dwarves, to flush this underground world out - as long as occasional members of other factions that might wander down.

So I love the fluff but when I saw a few games recently at the lgs it just looked liked guys were lining up armies across the board and going straight at each other. Is there much strategy in this game, or does it all take place in list building?

>>52344251
Yeah, but they're Von Carsteins for some reason.
>>
>>52344340
That was probably Age of Sigmar you were seeing. Different game, a successor we don't like very much.

Think of it like the Mass Effect 3 of Warhammer Fantasy. Except the entire game is as bad as the ending, and gameplay is like being stuck in the Mako.
>>
I'm reading though the Dark Elf fluff, and is Malekith actually retarded? All he seems to do is fuck up
>>
>>52344340
8th edition has 0 strategy. Walk straight and moshpit.
7th is a bit better but the game is won or lost at listbuilding anyway
6th is all about manoeuvring

AoS is even worse than 8th edition in that regard
>>
>>52344606
>>52344753
No, they said it was the ninth age continuation thing of warhammer. Does any version of the game have units racing across the board for position or is it slower than that?
>>
I'm kinda confused, are shapechangers and weres the same thing or not?
>>
>>52344682
Basically yes.

The early lore has him as an insane Roman Emperor, a product of Aenarion's Curse combined with growing up in the same kind of torture orgy court that created Slaanesh in 40k, and Morathi who was a Slaanesh worshiper that was molesting him.

In the later apologetic lore, Asuryan was a massive prick who just wanted an asshole as the eternal king of all Elves but Tzeentch manipulated him into first not forcing his way to become king while he was eligable and having the evils of democracy exist instead, and then after getting a vision of theEnd Times forcing his way into being king when he was unfit and Asuryan being too much of a dick to fix things. Then him trying to take his rightful throne while caring for his senile hedonistic mother all while Tzeentch laughed from the Warp.

The later lore sucks.
>>
>>52345284
Most versions.

The only reason armies would just line up and shoot is if the opponents are some combination of Dwarfs, Empire, Tomb Kings, or Wood Elves and the participants intentionally wanted to gunline.

>>

Also Mousilion, so...I don't know.

You could probably give them a spot in the Badlands, I suppose. But I'm not sure what you'd do with other bloodlines.
>>
>>52345374
Would it be unfair to call Malekith Caracalla, perhaps Commodus or Caligula?
>>
>>52346769
Strigoi get Mourkain, which would be east of Karaz-a-Karak I think. You'd add them with Ogres. Neferata has the Silver Pinnacle, a Dwarf Hold she took over somewhere, you could probably stick her in the game already.

The hard ones are Necrarchs and Blood Dragons. BDs are nomadic, aside from the singular keep they have, and Necrarchs are fucking everywhere and only unite for Nagash.
>>
>>52345390

Orcs, skaven and empire can also pull off impressive gunlines
>>
>>52346836
Yes. Malekith has atleast some semblence of competent governance. To my knowledge Malekith isn't running around larping as a diety or scorn anything that isn't a part of the military.
>>
>>52337090
What cracks me up is that the Darklands are a huge pile of FUCKING NOTHING, as big as the old world.
>>
>>52347447
You could just give Blood Dragons that keep, it would be good enough.

Worst case scenario they could be wandering armies like Beastmen. I feel like that's an interesting mechanic, and could be a fun way to handle mercenaries from Tilea or something.
>>
>>52347736
I don't think OnG or Skaven can go almost entirely gunline though. Skaven do have a damn fine one though, and I actually really live the idea of them shooting it out with Dwarfs and Night Gobbos.
>>
>>52348023
Yeah, Beastmen mechanics for BD works.

Unlike the others though world domination isn't their goal. I almost feel like their win objectives is just wiping out Chaos and greenskins as well as Abhorash and Harkon's questline.

I suppose when Tomb Kings are added you just make Necrachs part of Nagash's faction.
>>
>>52348115

O&G gunline is one of their most competitive lists.

They can field an huge horde of goblins with poisonous attacks, 6 bolt throwers, 4 goblin lobba and 4 stone lobba.

And they keep their fun toys in melee too!
>>
>>52348172
Nice.

So here's a question. Do greenskins understand sex and reproduction?

Based on books and army books they not only seem to actually grasp familial bonds, mates, and offspring, but actually breed boars, wolves, wyverns, and spiders. Compared to 40k where Orks don't understand it at all and only breed Squigs, this seems strange.

Goblins also refer to each other as brothers and Skarsnik seems to both love and mourn the death of Gobbla.

None of those fit the idea of fungus apes. Greenskins understand positive emotion more than Skaven and Beastmen even. If anything, their only fault seems to be having no loyalty whatsoever other than fear.

>>
>>52348276
>Compared to 40k where Orks don't understand it at all and only breed Squigs

But they don't. Feral Orks and Snakebites breed all sorts of animals including boars.
>>
>>52347447
Silver Pinnacle is near Peak Pass, so right by Karak Kadrin. You could probably fudge that in somewhere when the map expands to cover the Dark Lands.

Melkhior's Tower is in southern Ostermark.
>>
>>52337101
>>52337878
>>52339084

The game is a new game, so you can expect 4 faction like the previous one

It's probably HE, DE, lizards and skaven, with a pre-order DLC like clan Pestilens or something

People who own the first game will probably get a old worlder skaven faction like Mors or Moulder with 1 LL
>>
>>52349019
It isn't a new game.

There's a midpoint between new game and DLC that kids today only know of from Warcraft and Starcraft called "expansions".
>>
>>52349053
So basically like AoE2 and the Conquerer's Expansion?
>>
>>52333270

I think the reason is a desire to do a big expansion that opens up the map. The timing is right as the game has been out a long time how. You really can't do Lustria with out lizardmen. That said, Skaven can't be far behind.
>>
>>52350096
They'll probably set up Skaven as one of the big enemies of Lizardmen, since that's how things are in the lore. It would be boring if Lustria was nothing but lizardmen tribes from coast to coast.
>>
>>52350111
>It would be boring if Lustria was nothing but lizardmen tribes
norscan tribes and empire explorers are basically shoe-ins
>>
>>52350198
There's the Vampire Coast too.
Dark Elves have a fair amount of contact with Chaos, so they're fine. No idea how they're going to challenge High Elves though.
Maybe the occasional Orc flotilla a la Grom the Paunch.
>>
>>52344224
Anyone?
>>
>>52350286
High Elves have some fortress in the south of Naggaroth - could be a way to give them more contact with Chaos, or they could redirect a Skaeling fleet there, since they're already travelling across the Sea of Claws to attack Bretonnia.

So far one of the flaws of Total Warhammer is that it can't quite encompass the feel the setting has of 'everyone is fighting everyone all the time.'
>>
>>52350864
Best in what way?
2nd edition probably has the most material available for it, if that's what you want.
>>
>>52350903
Well the setting is pretty different in each, right? Which one, in your opinion, is richer and more interesting?
>>
>>52351011
1st edition is much more low-key. A large part of the setting was undeveloped at that point, which could be a pro or a con depending on your perspective. A lot of familiar Warhammer tropes haven't been cemented. There are gnomes and chaos goblins. The writers had a better grasp of history.

2nd edition is much more familiar to a modern fan of Warhammer. It's a bit more grimdark. The Storm of Chaos is assumed to have happened, which changes the feel of the northern provinces significantly. There's a lot more material to draw on.

3rd edition is similar to 2nd except the Storm of Chaos has been retconned.

Personally I favour a blend, taking the best bits from each. Lower-key, like first edition but set in 2522-3 and without the Storm of Chaos.

Yes. The threat of chaos is more focused on cults and mutants in the woods than invading armies from the north. Karl Franz does not ride a griffon. Magic is the realm of individual wizards and their apprentices rather than colleges and patriarchs. That kind of thing.

I don't know if it's a standalone expansion or not, so it's hard to argue with you on that. But the fact that the borders of the campaign-map are so ill defined, and seem to leave room for addition, makes me think they'll be combined somehow.

Besides, why would you want are essentially two halves of a whole Warhammer Fantasy game?
>>
>>52351907
Careful, the bases on sauruses are 25mm
>>
>>52357076
Not him but this is already confirmed standalone expansion
http://wiki.totalwar.com/w/Total_War:_WARHAMMER_Future_Content_Blog

We current have Total War; Old World. Total War; New World is about to be announced in 6 days which will have Liz/HE/DE/Skaven. Then we get the next $60 worth of DLC for that followed by the next standalone expansion which will likely be Chaos Daemons and reworked Chaos Warriors, followed by another $60 worth of DLC. In between that we will get all the other rulebook factions.

If you own just one of the standalones, all you can play is those factions related to that game. If you own all of them, you can play any of the factions. But its all still 1 map, its just which factions you can play as that is determined by what you own.
>>
>>52357076

because last we know, CA hadn't actually figured out HOW to join the maps completely. CA left out map data and unused assets in rome 2, with a full Indian unit variations left in. The map in that game wasn't even complete in the east. All you have have are a bunch of empty space in the game.

It might as well be the same with warhammer.

CA has stated repeatedly in interviews that the games will be stand alones that will combine somehow into a bigger game.

That seems like a weird way of doing things, considering you have to buy DLC and beat missions to get all the factions available to the Old World right now...

I get that the game is big, and the game world is big, and it was unlikely they could package them into one game at all. But it still feels like a shitty cash grab to me, since each game alone will be so expensive, and all the stuff I'd have to buy to get a more complete experience...

I personally would not recommend priming models on the frame for two reasons.

1. How are you going to file away the mould lines?
2. Glue parts that have been sprayed will slightly weaken the bond.

I would assemble the model and then prime. The only exception is riles and shields, you may want to leave them off to speed up painting.

I'm genuinely not trying to start a skub war. Please have mercy on my soul, oh oldfags.

Is it possible to play WHFB with round bases? I want to use the same models for AoS and WHFB, and I know squares can be used for either, I'm mostly just curious if it goes both ways

Sorry for violating OP rule #1 :^)
>>
>>52373354
no

just use square bases for AoS since that rule set accommodates for it
>>
>>52373354

Well, it can be done, lots of plaer had Demons on round bases magnetized to square trays (this was due to Demons having same units both on WHF and WH40k)

On monster and big stuff is not going to work though, and they look so damn silly on round ones
>>
>>52373374
>>52373381

Alright thanks, I will just use squares then. I actually prefer how they look on most stuff anyway. I was just trying to be cheap since I have a shit ton of extra round bases left over from various projects/drunkenly deciding "of course I need 100 round infantry bases" etc. Thanks for the info.
>>
>>52373354
the difficult part is that round bases generally end up occupying more space, for example you will end up using 25mm bases instead of 20x20mm bases; so a little more abstraction when presenting a movement tray is needed, for single model units like monster the best solution would be having marks on the base to remember you where the angles of the square base would be so that you can at least trace front arc and flanks.
>>
>>52373492
I remember seeing some people who got around that by putting their models on 20 mm washers and then sticking magnets onto their square and round bases
>>
>>52370071
hey can we talk about this? are you just spitballing ideas?
>>
>>52373512

That's an interesting idea. In my case it won't work because I like making semi-scenic bases so once I pick one I'll be stuck with it basically. Unless I magnetized every model's feet lel. That seems like it would be near-impossible though. I guess I could just glue the magnets to the bottom of their feet and put holes in the bases but that sounds like a lot of effort when square bases work either way.
>>
>>52373455
Well, you can use the round bases for Blood Bowl. Anything for that you probably won't be using in anything else.
All you need to do is use a stock model and stick pauldrons or paint on a jersey or something where you can show a number. Also remove most or all weapons.

Grey Seer with power scroll and 5++ (from the base manual)

Warlord on war litter with helm of discord, poisoned attacks, 5++ (from the skaven manual), shield and tail weapon

Warlord on war litter with weeping blade, armor of destiny and shield

-----

Engineer (mage 1°) with dispel scroll

Engineer (mage 1°) with doomrocket

Engineer with bronze globe

Chieftain BSB with Horned Rat, shield

Chieftain with Portent of Verminous Doom, enchanted shield, regenration 6+

Plague Priest with flail and 4++

-----------

30 clanrat + ratling gun

40 stormvermin with musician, stendard bearer and flaming banner, plus doomflayer

40 slaves with shields and musician (3 of these)

5 rat darts (5 giant rats + packmaster)

------

10 gutter runners with slings and poison (2 of these units)

10 jezzail (2 of these as well)

40 plague rats with plague banner

1 Hellpit Abomination

3 Cannons
--------

The 2 chieftain and warlord go into a single unit, which will try to smash into his greater demon. Verminous doom + Banner + Helm of discord means he has to succeed twice at a LD7 test to even attack.

I got jezzails and cannons to soften up both the greater demon and any other big multiwound model he fields (hellcannon, nurgle's beasts), and the gutter runners can both soften up big monster or wittle down any fast little unit he has

The plague priest and the monks are there to take care of basic troops.

Slaves and rat darts to tidy up and redirect anything menacing

I've just realised something that really pissed me off.

Kholek Suneater has the same amount of armour as every other Shaggoth in Total War Warhammer because all the errata's got taken down for Age of Sigmar so CA didn't see that he was meant to have heavy armour in his rules but GW forgot to put it in the codex...
>>
>>52384740
Fantasy doesn't have a codex.

But yeah, that sucks. Maybe they did it intentionally for balance?
>>
So how do the editions work? The overall rules are on 8th edition; does that mean I can't effectively use the 6th edition Bretonnians? Could I use them, but they'd be way off in power level compared to other armies? Has there been minor updates for them that haven't warranted their own rulebooks, and if so, where could I find this?

Thanks for the answers, guys.
>>
>>52384740

Kholek is already an unstoppable beast if he gets Ward protection. Does he really need more armor?
>>
>>52384931
You HAVE to use 6e Brets in 8e because due to the clusterfuck of GW wanting to kill the setting it never got an update.

Brets were indeed underpowered as a result, but didn't suffer as badly as Beastmen did from the lack of updates. Hell, arguably not as bad as Tomb Kings which were supported with updates.

That being said, if you have an option to do so most of us would recommend playing the entire game in 6e. It was the last complete edition, and the most balanced.
>>
>>52384991

No one at my LGS plays anything but Magic or 40k anyway so it would mainly be me, my girlfriend, and any friends I could rope into it. So it shouldn't be too hard to get everyone swinging on the 6e set anywho. What major changes were there from 6 to 8?
>>
>>52384804
>Fantasy doesn't have a codex.
o-oh yeah... army book

And I doubt it, he's pretty shit in multiplayer and they've been trying really hard to do a complete rules translation, so I reckon they just missed it.

>>52384949
Only because he gets an innate ward save for not much reason.

I'd say it'd be better if that was changed to a really high magic resistance buff & he was given armour instead - probably with a health reduction as well.
>>
>>52385058
7 and 8 rewarded hordes, requiring you to buy large groups of models while reducing importance of things like flanking.

Also, magic got fucking insane; a wizard miscasting makes you very likely to lose unless you're OnG and its one of your cheap Goblin Shamans, and a wizard could wipe out half your army by getting lucky.

If one of your peeps wants to play with models like the Skycutter or Nagash that came after 6e, just houserule them an equivalent. Its not really too hard since the major changes were in the core rules anyway.
>>
So where did Gork and Mork come from? ET lore or regular lore.

I don't know if it's ever explained.

The problem with trying to change them through changing greenskins is that brutal cunning and cunning brutality are the core of the greenskin psyche. Gork and Mork aren't avatars of some abstract concept, they're the entirety of what Orcs and Goblins are. It's not a feedback loop so much as it's the same thing, viewed from the material or immaterium.

At best the Gnoblars might be ignorant of the names of the gods, but they still follow the principles because it's how greenskin psychology works.

So I went a bit autistic perhaps in trying to figure out how I want to paint and modify my Arachnarok.

I looked up their eye arrangement, and closest I can figure is that they are Pholcidae spiders.

Pholcidae are very unimpressive.
>Pholcidae, commonly known as cellar spiders, are a spider family in the suborder Araneomorphae. The family contains about 1500 species divided into about 80 genera.

>Some species, especially Pholcus phalangioides, are commonly called daddy long-legs spider, granddaddy long-legs spider, carpenter spider, daddy long-legger, or vibrating spider.

>Pholcids are found in every continent in the world except Antarctica where it is too cold for them to survive. They hang inverted in messy, irregular, tangled webs. These webs are constructed in dark and damp recesses, such as: caves, under rocks and loose bark, abandoned mammal burrows, and undisturbed areas in buildings, such as cellars (hence the common name "cellar spider"). However, Pholcids are also quite commonly found in warm, dry places, such as household windows and attics.

They freak out when something gets trapped in their web, hence "vibrating spider". They're also actually really useful because they ignore humans, but are aggressive as fuck towards other spiders and keep the populations of poisonous spiders in line.

So its strange that the super aggressive giant man-eating spiders from the forest are based on relatively "friendly" and useful tiny spiders that live in your house, but it makes sense that they ARE connected to mold considering where they are generally found.

Gnoblars don't follow Gork or Mork at all. They don't answer to them, go on WAAAGHs, aren't backstabbing, and value money and loyalty.

They are absolutely loyal to Ogres, more loyal to them than any race in the setting to any other.

Greenskins only have loyalty based on mutual gain or fear and are still constantly backstabbing regardless.
>>
>>52379877
fuck no. Halflings tho.....maybe
>>
>>52387321
They are slaves who follow the biggest things around. It's the same thing as any other greenskin, except Gnoblars know they'll never be big'uns compared to Ogres so they focus their competitive nature against each other, with Ogres as the prize. They don't value loyalty so much as they want the protection that an Ogre master offers (a dubious shield, but better than being among other Gnoblars who will happily murder and eat you for a shiny rock or a chance to be two feet closer to the nearest Ogre).

Quick question regarding Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. It says in the Armory book that Ithilmar Mail and Gromril Plate is always best quality which reduces encumbrance by 50%. Does anyone know if the Encumberence values given for both sets takes that into account or not?

I couldn't find any sizable torrents for Warhammer fantasy books, just a few dozen or so.
>>

There is plenty there, but you are to human to see it.

Fucking Dark Lands spews out gems from the ground like a geyser does water, and had entire planes littered with the bones of ancient monsters, who if they could walk again would destroy the world.

Besides that, and pigbarter town down south, the rest is either Chaos Dwarf land, or Greenskin country, with the most black orcs in the entire warhammer world located in the Dark Lands.

We have never seen a proper Dark Lands map, but it is divided like the old world, just again GW never pinpointed enough for us to make one, but if someone does(come on CA), it will be split up between the Chaos Dwarfs, Skaven, Vampire Counts(depending on time frame), Ogres, Greenskins tribes, (entire tribes of Hoggoblins, entire tribes of Black Orcs, etc), and if it adds dragon island, which is normally part of the Dark Lands sphere of influence, Lizardmen, with the Tomb Kings coming in(at one time the Tomb Kings controlled a small portion of the Dark Lands, and did battle with the Chaos Dwarfs, Settra will want that land back).

All of that, not counting the old world factions traveling the silk road.

In short, if you have ever played Age of Empires II, the Gold Rush map, its allot like that, but with pissed off evil Dwarfs trying to enslave you, and Ogres trying to eat you.

So I've never role played at all in my life up until 2 weeks ago. I loved it and now crave more.

Is anyone looking to pick up a player?I'm not familiar with any programs or rp'ing online, but I'm a quick learner and willing to put in the effort. Also, as a plus, I'm not obnoxious or an attention whore either. I'm also at home and available most of the time.

I really want to get familiar enough with this so I can dm. Dm'ing seems cool because its like writing a story where your main characters literally have a mind of their own. Also like sending rats through a maze.

check out the gripping beast and warlord catalogs.
They have priests and druids that could pass as wizards.
Perry is similar in scale to warlord, the major difference being that Perry minis have smaller hands usually. If you use old GW minis they'll probably look more similar to the Warlord stuff than Perry minis anyway.

As the other anon mentioned with warmonger minis , Foundry sells a lot of the old Perry stuff too, since it's the family business of mighty avenging chaos lord Brian Ansell.
The scale varies a bit from range to range though, so depends a bit on what you are looking for how well those would fit.

There are a few in the Mega but they tend to only be digital books from the past few years.

Currently no 100% complete archive exists.

I'm currently thinking about hunting some down and scanning them. We have a list of every book published.
>>
Ruglud's Orcs actually read and wrote enough to keep a journal of their adventures.

But if a greenskin were to learn a written language, which would it be? Khazalid, Empire language/German, Elf? It can't be their own because other races coukd read that account.
>>
>>52394217

I have not but why do you ask?
>>
>>52394251
What do you know is missing? I have a small collection of older material and a scanner.

I know there's White Dwarfs that /tg/ can't find too.
>>
>>52394265

I doubt any Dwarf would share Khazalid with any Greenskin, they keep it secret from their closest allies never mind their old enemy.
>>
>>52394265
I doubt that orc pictograms are so complicated that an Empire scholar couldn't decipher them.
>>
>>52394265
Feel like they would get the most out of Khazalid. Not only can it make it easier inhabitating their mountains, but it would also spite dwarves pretty hard. What writing do Chaos Dwarves use? It could help them in this regard, too.
>>

Euro tourney limits kills the slave spam. It basically limits your composition by providing you a "pool" of choices you can select. HPA, cannons and non-mage engeneers all feature in this list, as do slave units past the third or past 120 models.

Anyway we played yesterday. He fielded a Gread Unclean and a demon prince, the strange slaneesh chariot, a big unit of beasts of nurgle, a big block of bloodletters and nurglite troops

I killed on first turn his Demon Prince due to cannon + poisoned sling spam, he got my HPA with a cannonball

I succesfully baited his Great Unclean one in the big LD trap unit, he failed the test (i still managed to not wound him), and basically died to my +5 combat res, since it surprisingly is not steadfast.

The chariot is surprisingly powerful at shredding slaves, but once both demons were down there was not much to do expect running circles around him and mopping up.

His skirmishers are a pain in the ass.

what the fuck
is that new fluff?
why is there such a massive distinction between them and "chaos trolls" then? are chaos trolls just the troll equivalent of a chaos champion then? or i suppose it would be reasonable to assume it just depends on their exposure to chaos
>>
>>52398370
The sources the Lexicanum has are 7th ed Orcs and Goblins and Beasts of Chaos.

A distinction is technically drawn: "While all Trolls are inherently creature of Chaos, some have undergone more direct mutation that has twisted them into even more fearsome creatures than normal...While common, river and stone trolls ally with Greenskins, these children of Chaos are loyal to their Dark God fathers and they will often accompany the Warriors of Chaos in their campaigns."

The main distinction seems to be that, while they are all creatures of Chaos, some don't directly serve the Dark Gods anymore, because they're stupid or have grown distant from Chaos's call.
>>
>>52398370

Sometimes I think they say Chaos when they mean just the winds of magic, which I guess are inherently Chaotic but it doesn't sound as pejorative.
