Technically those sorts of people wouldn't know how to fight as soldiers, even though hunters/poachers would probably be pressed as peasant archers. They might be able to defend themselves, but they'd be closer to a peasant mob than Men at Arms.

I would have loved Bretonnians recruiting criminals and bandits to serve in their armies, earning a pardon through military service and making use of people who actually roughly know how to kill, but you could argue it goes against the flavor of Bretonnia. When the High Elves see some lumberjacks being badass, they make an elite guard out of them. If Bretonnia saw lumberjacks being badass, they'd probably treat them worse for thinking they were as good as nobles.

They sure are badass. Maybe not the white lions themselves, but I'm pretty sure to have read somewhere that at least Chrace was considered a more backwards place compared to the rest of Ulthuan. It's basically countryside. Hopefully I'm not talking dumb shit right now.
>>
>>52279149
No, you have a point - for a long time it was just a place for people to get back to nature or be rednecks, I believe. It's only since Dark Elves started attacking there that it's gotten more, and even then it's fortified cities amid forests and mountains and plains.

Kings of War, 9th Age and 8th Edition are the big three and probably account for over half the fan base. The rest are anything from older editions, skirmish games and homebrew.

None of the big three have a clear lead and it will totally depend on your area.

Good thing is, you can play all three with square bases.

9th Age is definitely the most popular in my area followed by 8th. Haven't seen much of KoW.

I bet you nu-fantasy cucks are also okay with discussing endtimes? Because 7th made drastic changes to the lore that completely changed the feel of warhammer, and 8th is literally the setup for the endtimes. Anything after 6th is fanfiction tier garbage and should be treated as such. Warhammer is about peasant farmers defending their homes against impossible odds and dying in a ditch from a dung covered arrow. 7th and onward turned it into epic high fantasy where fucking laser beam dinosaurs and elves with flying chariots and steamshit tanks for the empire. Whatever happened to the common man? From the beginning, that's what warhammer has always been about. When you start focusing on armies and battles and monsters and epic heroes, you completely lose sight of the original feel of it. Anything after 6th completely fucks your beloved old world roughly in the ass with no lube, and might as well go in the shitter with age of smegmar. It's not canon, period, and should be ignored as such. Any faggots okay with this nonsense can go play with cataphract overdorfs steamshits with the 3 other mongs and their dog who actually play AoS

I mean, the nobles would probably not even notice the efforts of a peasant no matter what.

If he's an especially good meat shield he might get to keep one of his pigs this winter.
>>
>>52280835
Good luck with 'em.
>>
>>52281044
Wrong. You need to read Knights of the Grail and Barony of the Damned.

Better, smarter nobles often recognize more valuable, capable peasants. Hell, even a fucking Mousillonian vampire can. Social interaction is, however, very limited.
>>
>>52281057
Knights of the Grail is basically a canon unto itself, where the knights are reasonable overlords, the peasants sort of run the state, and the Lady takes care of the rich and poor alike.

>>
>>52281511
To be fair, it's attempting to make sense of something that was twisted to not make sense due to grimdark, and was never fully explained anyway. And it still doesn't explain a lot of things, like trade and how some peasants can become skilled craftsmen or who actually builds all the stuff in Bretonnia.
>>
>>52281511
Knights of the Grail is canon, and there's nothing in it that GW didn't give the okay on.

You didn't think nobles stooped to merchantry or artisan trades in their cities, did you?
>>
>>52281750
>who actually builds all the stuff in Bretonnia

Wall wardens, apparently.
>>
>>52281511

It's almost as if in a period before the modern state each community was fairly individual.

Same goes for every other faction, the highest authority for most people is the local Lord, Prince or Count. There's a lot of room for individualism and so both can exist in tandem.
>>
>>52281057
I really wish they dropped the shit covered inbred peasants stuff. As part of the chivalrous code, a lord should be able to provide for his people and his villages and populace should appear healthy and prosperous. After all, if your lands are shit, how are you supposed to fund all those wars? If your peasants are all smelly hunchbacks, how are you supposed to have a healthy stock to draw capable men at arms from? Knights whose peasants are all grimderp flea ridden subhumans should be ridiculed by their fellow knights, and possibly have their right to the land challenged.
To avoid this becoming too noblebright, you could have some (most) lords go as far as order the execution of any crippled, deformed or exceptionally ugly citizens, leading to a massive population of mutants and ungors infesting the woods
>>
>>52282169
Your last suggestion was undertaken by a Mousillon noble, only he takes the mutants, murders them, and stores them for his impending zombie army to attack those fags in Lyonesse with.

Carcassonne is also known for relatively free, healthy, and militant peasants.

Some of the 'slavering inbred monster' stuff is tongue-in-cheek/propaganda.
>>
>>52280750

I swear to the Lady, if GW ever bring back Bretonnia as part of MtO I will drop at least £300 in one weekend.
>>
>>52281766
But how do they learn how to do that? I liked some concept art that portrayed architects as being almost monkish individuals, making it interesting to imagine them tied into the cult of Verena or some such.
>>
>>52282371
Apparently the nobles specifically select some of their peasants for education, "generously" paying for education...with the caveat that they'll be paying back the bill forever.

In the cities, you probably see the nascent middle class sending their children to learn trades.
>>
>>52282371

I imagine in exactly the same way real guilds worked in the medieval period.

Serves them right, they had their chance to keep the race alive, they chose to bastardize it, and treat it like it was a forgotten step daughter of the red haired variety. So fuck 'em. It wouldn't have been fuckhuge, but it would have either been Giles le Breton, mounted on some bad ass ride. or the Lady of the Lake herself or in some incarnate form.

That or, perhaps a huge ass wooden tower, that houses the grail itself. Think of a very very well made seige tower looking device, pulled by pegasus, and it can open up and has the grail inside, along with Giles' sword and lance. And it can have the properties of something like the Skaven Screaming bell... That's my idea anyway..

>dwarf fist: heavy as fuck; passes on part of the wisdom of the ancients in the form of increased proficiency at using or identifying stuff, especially if dwarfen in origin
>saint hand: apply on the wound or the malediction for removal; can react impressively on daemons and undead; can be used again after a month if cleaned in sanctified oil; leaflet not included, but keep away from kids anyway.
>possessed wizard hand: one use ever; the spell unleashed is very dangerous (the players don't know exactly what spell it will cast but the being possessing the hand will try to convince them it will be useful to them); best accompanied by a dire situation practically forcing them to use it at some point

A lot of the siege towers are dumb.

The Empire, Bretonnian and Orc ones are decent. The Chaos one is ok. Although you have to wonder how they transport that shit around. The Beastman one is a little cartoony but mostly alright.
But the Dwarf and Wood Elf and Vampire towers are like novelty cake decorations.
>>
>>52295351
A bunch of orcs could probably nudge that and make it fall.
>>
>>52295720
Agreed. I'd really like to see a mod which makes them more realistic. Warhammer Fantasy needs to tread that thin line between history and fantasy, in my opinion, and those siege engines cross the line.
>>
>>52295942
I don't think Warhammer Fantasy should avoid fantasy - after all, that is in the name - but should use realistic elements to ground their fantasy. A giant statue isn't really realistic in any way - it's not feasible, and it's even a little over-ornate for dwarves.

Dwarven siege towers would probably have to be very cleverly made, since they don't trust wood as a good building material. They'd probably have a steel frame with iron slats, or something like that - and instead of a drawbridge-like thing on top, maybe a crank-powered piston, like a mining creation re-adapted for warfare.

A key part of feudalism was paternity, the idea that the owners of the land worked by the peasants had a social duty to them. When we industrialised, the removal of this and its replacement by the cash nexus caused huge social upheaval.

So really, I would imagine Bretonnian Lords, just like real Lords, did do what you say.

Read 'The English working-class' for more information.

I think for many questions in Fantasy just look at the real history.

Were there tyrant Barons? Yes. Were there land owners who took their social responsibility seriously? Yes.
>>
>>52297728

We have just about every other type of Elf so I imagine Jungle Elves are within the realm of possibility,

I think England developed differently than countries like France, which remained strongly feudal well into the 18th century, where England kept slowly...I don't want to say modernizing, but heading towards a different political and economic system peacefully, rather than how France eventually erupted in violent revolution because of a mix of famine and heavy taxes and a backwards system of government finally collapsing without strong leadership. England also had more independent governance of its cities, and country gentry which took active part in their community, while even the poorest nobles of France did not, and this more closely fits the usual Bretonnian model.
>>

Warhammer has always relied more on popular conceptions (or misconceptions) of history rather than the facts. It also tends toward darkness and pessimism more than historical accuracy. So I think it's in keeping with the style of the series that Bretonnia is depicted as a "dark age tyranny" rather than real-world feudalism.

After the Black Death, peasants could negotiate far better deals due to the lack of labour. In England, wages remained consistently high through into the 17th century. If I remember, the French peasants gained a lot of power in the short term, but it didn't last.

True, England and France are not comparable in the early modern period but in regards to paternalism and feudalism they were very similar in the medieval period which Bretonnia is loosely based on.

I was just using the violent uprisings of the early industrial period as an example of what happens when paternalism is stripped away.

Happened in France as well, the bread riots and the communes of the 19th century.

Long story short the OP was asking how they survive if they tread the peasants like shit and really they would socially but they would need their economic requirements met.

Also that's the 'The making of the English working-class', I accidentally used the short reference before.

Does anyone else know what the other hand signs are for the gods of the Old World? I know that each of the cults has their own hand signal, as listed in various stories, but the only one I know how to do is the Sigmarite comet with your forefinger, middle finger and thumb out sweeping down. I ask because a few of my new players in WFRP are taking their character's religion more serious and wanted to know but I could only tell the soldier who worshipped Sigmar as his patron god. I haven't been able to find anything on other signs in Tome of Salvation.

I'm guessing the Sigmarite equivalent of the middle finger is like the sign of the comet, except vertical, with pointer and middle finger up, palm turned inward. Implicit meaning is 'Sigmar smite thee.'

You could do the same with the regular old middle finger, though the allusion there would be to his hammer.

the Elves were declining when the great civilisation of Nehekara was still young, they will still be declining when the Empire of Sigmar is long gone.

Elves live for thousands of years, even if they only last for three more generations, that's the age of the empire and then some more.

The Dragons are more or less dirctly linked to the vulcanic activity of Ulthuan, which may be influenced by the vortex.
>>
>>52312055

It seems that 99% of Orcs and Goblins are some shade of green but GW has shown off multi-coloured goblin tribes and had some explanation along the lines of 'the spores landed in X and this is why they are Y colour'. So it does exist but is very uncommon.

I have to say though, have you seen different coloured Orcs? They never look that good.
>>
Why would they put out video games set in Fantasy when it's completely abandoned on the tabletop front? The Age of Sigmar lore looks fucking awful. I want to play WHFB and the rule books are easy enough to get but the models aren't available anymore.

Why would they tease me with this far superior version of their product that is unavailable in any form besides video games?
>>
>>52314793
Because WHF video games generate mad money, whereas the tabletop game didn't. We should consider ourselves lucky that WHF is such an awesome and compelling setting that it can stand on its own two legs without the game that gave it life in the first place.

Play the Warhammer Fantasy RPG (2nd ed) anyway. It's a decent substitute if you want tabletop WHF antics.
>>

Technically yeah, but it's not really that much different. It's just Warhammer with some dead characters still alive so you can play as them, almost insignificant really.

And hell, if the little differences there make it so that End Times never happens, then I'll even prefer it over the "canon" one.

It's more a videogame adaptation, really. Some stuff has been changed to make it more of a fun vidya. Aside from the changes you mentioned, and a bit of change to the map, there's really little different about the lore, because it doesn't actually try to go by the lore too deeply. It's sort of like you can't necessarily call historical Total War games alternative history, because it's never necessarily trying to make different history, just giving the player a sandbox of nations to play around in - aside from what you start with, nothing will be identical to what happened historically.

Personally, I'm not that picky about the lore. I enjoy pre-End Times stuff mostly because the world hasn't collapsed yet and a non-collapsed world is more interesting to me, but End Times does bring up a few interesting things and even has some nice stories to them. I'm not going to cry lore purist about a setting that's only cared about by the fans anymore, you know?

>>
>>52317617
It destroyed the Warhammer world and ended the setting. That a good enough summary and reason?
>>
>>52317617
Pretty much all the non-Chaos factions get killed off, the world is blown up, and many secrets are haphazardly and clumsily revealed (Malekith was always supposed to be the Pheonix King, the Lady of the Lake is Lilleath, Belakor had the timeline reset button) while others are never properly touched on, with beloved characters getting the axe, sometimes with little more than a sentence to them, and others not getting mentioned at all (a writer ended up having to do his own unofficial explanation of what happened to the Orks and the Ogre Kingdoms.) Though there were also good moments, like Boris Todbringer and Khazrak One-Eye having a rather emotional final battle.

It's hard to explain if you weren't around when the End Times was happening, but while it was exciting, it was also rather horrifying, with entire factions getting destroyed or just mashed together into rough conglomerates. And looking back at how badly it was done makes me wonder: was it because GW was pressed for time or just trying to shuffle things along to make way for AoS, or was that legitimately the best they could do and thought was the most fun?
>>
>>52315802
Warhammer lore only began in 3e, and aside from 7e to 8e to End Times those editions all made huge changes anyway.
>>
>>52316216
Shit, they had a "like the game? Buy the model!" page full of models that were discontinued within two months.
>>
>>52317617
Half the characters hold the idiot ball so the plot can happen. The other half die stupid deaths, often unrelated to their established plot.
Elf Sauron was revealed in a TWEEST to be the real king of Elf Gondor, Elf Aragorn was a crazy asshole possessed by a crazy asshole.

Then everyone died and AoS happened.
>>
>>52318492
We know that internally GW is a complete fucking mess of terrible management and poor to no interdepartmental communication.

We also know they planned AoS from 5e based both on Gav interviews and model sketches for Sigmarines that actually looked good back then.

So...both.
>>
>>52318585
You forget that everyone died and AoS happened because Mannfred decided to kill the guy making magic so the world didn't blow up solely because nobody was paying attention to him, and literally the only thing that matters to him is being feared.
>>
>>52318653

This is the kind of retarded shoehorning that relegates ET to toilet paper.

That is just so out of character for him, he wants to rule the empire, why has he gone Saturday morning cartoon 'blow up the world' all of a sudden.

I'll answer this rhetorical question, he was the only person available and someone had to do it to kill Warhammer. All other concerns were secondary.
>>
>>52318763
Its even worse. Mannfred didn't end the world on purpose. He literally, without thought, killed Gelt as a way to fucking remind everyone he still existed.

He knew a bad outcome was going to occur, but lack of fucks about what that was.

In AoS he's even more of a whiny bitch.

But then again they character assassinated him a long time ago (early 7e) by making him the reason they knew how to kill Vlad, manipulating it so Konrad would take control of the Bloodline, and thinking he could betray Nagash easier than betraying Arkhan.

I know I'm not alone in wishing AoS never happened, but for me, the biggest loss is the fucking Beastmen. I fucking love the Beastmen. It takes an incredible amount of self-restraint to not just straight up rip them off for my own settings, because I think they're so fucking cool.

In the case of Beastmen, it's because they absolutely are rip-offs. Right down to the chaos worship. And I say this as a Beastman player.

So when someone says:
>It takes an incredible amount of self-restraint to not just straight up rip them off for my own settings, because I think they're so fucking cool.
That's pretty understandable. Because GW had the same problem.

Its not Moorcock, but Beastmen are literally Glorantha Broo.

Games Workshop made minis for Glorantha, and whenever they lost the rights to an IP they sold off the remaining minis as Warhammer. When they lost the rights, they reused the EXACT SAME MOLDS to make Beastmen. Unlike Judge Dredd and D&D, GW kept making Broostmen.

Beastmen are 100% unchanged in lore from Broo other than worshiping Chaos who ignores them instead of dead gods.

Of all Games Workshop ripoffs, Broostmen are the single worst offender.

They showed new Mordheim.

Set in a city cursed by Nagash. Tournament play at launch.

It uses a board rather than your own terrain, and has a deck of cards to use your abilities so it is a spiritual successor rather than what Silver Tower was.

What can I use this model as in the fantasy army I'm intending to build? I was thinking maybe empire?
>>
>>52327036
Warhammer Amazons came before all Norscans were Chaos, and Norscan was a separate army.

Noscans settled a series of colonies in Lustria. Lizardmen are not happy vikings steal their gold but avoid targeting the first settlement for some reason, but lobotomize the rest for slaves. Some of the women of one of the Norscan clans started worshiping Lizardmen and killed their men. Slann gave them 40k weapons and they fight alongside Lizzies against invaders and Pygmies.

Fantasy needs square bases. If you cut it, or paint that base so it looks like the round thing is just something she's standing on, yeah.
I recommend stone, dark silvers, or aged bronze rather than gold. Gold and brighter silvers tend not to look good as Fantasy proxies.

Also, I recall many AoS autists insisting Stormcast are all-male. I wonder if they are eating their words now.

I don't meant to derail, I don't mean to contaminate, but the lores always been super clear that there are Humans, Elves, Dwarves, etc male and female and are selected based on being valliant and faithful warriors. Nothing to do with their sex. They've always been unbiased towards race and sex.

>>52327481
Norscans are fuckhuge. Not all Norscans go Chaos, the further south the less fucks they give although the further south the more afraid they are of the northerners.

Empire pilgrims, parents of the Glottkin, lived for decades actively converting them to Sigmar before they were accidentally killed by the Empire.

There's no lore of half-Ogres but nothing against it either, and in fucking Ostland it could probably happen. A Sigmarine in black metal with red and white and gold details could look good too.

But its your model and your lore. Anyone woth Norscan blood could be swoll.
>>
>>52327596
Pretty much.

He started his writing for Middle Earth when he was like ten. He created the proto-Elvish language in college. He was creating Orcs in his mind while trying to survive machine gun fire in the Somme. In church he was formulating the rules of power and faith. He was writing about the battle of Minas Tirith hiding with his kids in the cellar while Nazi bombers dropped a payload overhead and blew up the barn.

He was a DM who spent his life on one story, all because when he got super into mythology in his preteens he was super bummed out that Brits didn't have a super cool pre-Christian mythology like Egyptians, Norwegians, Chinese, and so on.
>>
>>52327625
I was thinking a swole Norscan who was pushed into the empire as a refugee in childhood, fell in with the church, got religious and is now wearing hand wrought armour made of poor person metals like bronze and iron on a quest to convert the North to the one true godking.

>>
Just a question while I wait for the books to download, and I have the sprues infront of me building.

Are the flagellants from fantasy a battle line/troops/whatever unit?
>>
>>52327747
Yeah, but we don't have a complex understanding of what they believed.

Tolkien was making his own translations of heroic epics from the Normans and viking sagas just to get a pure version. We only have vague ideas of what the druids were about, and nowhere near the full pantheon and fictional history of a true mythology. Plus while Tolkien was fascinated by the transformation of myth when Christianity hit it, and made Middle Earth seem like it was taken from some post-Christianization mix and different eras badly meshing (Ungoliant and Bombadil are intentionally like they stepped out of another culture incorporated awkwardly, or another era), he needed a pure version to see that transformation. We don't have that for druids, almost all of what we have now, let alone then, came through a Christian look back rather than the druids recording it themselves.

He means old canon Slann fought for them and were full of 40k references.

New canon Amazons are mentioned very rarely as just some random group Lizardmen fight once in awhile. They exist, but in the same sense as Fimir where they do nothing, don't appear, and are referenced but not focused on

Blood Bowl, WFRP, and Mordheim expansions were the only times they were really relevant.
They did have a nice model line though. Not as good as Freebooter Amazons, but a second.
