And then the fucking Sunder drops and two bitches someone gets hit in the dome piece with 22 commander damage thanks to Adventuring Gear while my 25/25 Wind-rider Eel savages the corpse of the other guy.

Not to mention there are 4-5 ways to combo off for other wins lurking in the deck.

>>
>>52029127
Yes, xmage is missing quite a few cards. I think they upload them one at a time by hand, so as you can imagine a lot of stuff slips through the cracks. I think they do updates and add them in bits and pieces along the way.

not really. I used rootborn defenses liberally during the time Supreme Verdict was standard legal, but Languish is a bitch to get around. My best bet is to slow-roll your threats, and prioritize creatures with 5+ toughness
>>
>>52029282
Confirmed, they only do it a few at a time. Here's the forum thread where they are deciding on which cards to add in the next update: http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=20154&sid=34fed1d6144361e114d9dfedb213f051

I run Meloku in the Deck, for sure. His combo potential is amazing, but other than some of the Moonfolk and a few utility wizards my decks is pretty light on creatures.

I like running Patron as the a commander because you need a reliable way to put your lands back out with the bouncing you do with the other cards. You can flash him in too, which is nice.

>>52028737
>implying I'd let them stop me.
I'm not as control heavy as I could be for mono blue, that's true, but I usually save a counter or some kind of protection for when I go in for the kill. Furthermore, it's all about timing.

There are a lot of very aggressive decks in my meta, while this deck goes from very passive to explosive. Much of the time most of the table HAS to expend their resources holding back the very aggressive decks who would win more quickly. I benefit from this by holding back my big plays until Izzet storm or Black reanimator or whoever blew their wad too soon and got shut down by the rest of the table who is now low on gas. But that's just simple multiplayer magic pacing. Those kind of rules hold true for any deck. But that's just kind of the style I lean towards. Try to keep at least one good answer in hand at all times, never look threatening until it's too late for them to do anything about it.
>>
>>52029273
Lifeforce, Order of the Sacred Torch, Thrull Wizard, Mana Tithe, Thrull Wizard to counter the spell itself.

Otherwise play anthems, anthems errywhere and mass +1/+1 counter cards like Archangel of Thune, most of the Ajani, Avenger of Zendikar, Cathar's Crusade, Gleam of Battle, Collective Effort, Decree of Savagery, etc.
>>
>>52029484

Just play counterspells.
Pic related saved me the other day when the chaos player tried to kill the table using hivemind and a Pact. I countered the pact he forced me to cast and went on with things.

I always like running off color counterspells or off color effects. No one really expects it. But it's so satisfying to see the look in their face when they think they're good to go "Only the mono white or mono red player has any mana open. I can't be stopped."

Then watch the look on their face as you cast Lapse of Certainty or flash in a Null Brooch.

How do your playgroups do proxies? Mine allows people to use a few proxies but I feel like that is opening up the table for someone to start to proxy stuff just because they can and not really care about ever getting the cards.

>>
>>52029543
I don't have a list lying around at the moment.

I run 38 lands, 30 Islands. The rest are some utility you can season to taste.

A good amount of the Moonfolk, but not all of them. Meloku as mentioned. Floodbringer. The manaleak guy, the untap lands one, the shroud one, I can't remember what else. A few other wizards like Azami, Arcanis, Trinket Mage, and Vedalken Aethermage.

Some mana rock ramp. Some landfall guys like Windrider Eel and Wave Wing Elemental and Guardian of Tazeem. Also Retreat to Coralhelm. Huge combo potential or control piece against creature decks.

Some other land bouncing spells like Gush and Thwart. Usual suite of blue counter magic, draw spells, and some bounces for spot removal. A few useful clone effects.

Amulet of Vigor is a must-have for the deck, too. If you can stick sunder that's a game ender . You can combo off with infinite tokens, life gain, mana, and capsize boards. Land fall trigger to smack people with Adventuring Gear or BIG FISH.
>>

Fucking kill yourself.
>>
>>52029660
No Piracy?
I mean, it's not too impressive of a card, sure.
But it's useful for stopping other people from interfering with your plays for a turn.
Cast it Main Phase 1 to force them to either tap out in response or lose their mana to you, then wait until your Main Phase 2 (to empty the mana pools of anyone that did tap out in response) to cast your own stuff and use their lands (since Piracy is until end of turn).
>>
>>52029678
Competitive is literally all combo.

I listed the viable combo decks that are Tier 0-1 earlier in that reply chain. However the decks you listed are in fact trash.
>>
>>52029460
Yeah, I run patron as part of the combo in the meloku deck, and he comes in with the mass polymorph. It's a fairly creature light deck, to the point that having meloku and 3 tokens is fairly likely to get a strong combo or outright win the game when I polymorph.

>>
>>52029631
Yeah. You're right. Looks like our Chaos player was a dummy and didn't know his own cards. He thought, and said, that hive mind only forced the table to copy spells he was casting.

That game was such a cluster, though, with all the chaos effects he had played I can't really remember WHAT the board state was like.

Had the table all copied Lapse like Hive Mind actually reads, each player would have (presumably) targeted their own copy of Pact while the Chaos player would have used his to counter one other player's Lapse so they would still die during their upkeep to the pact trigger. So instead of being a table kill, it would have been a single player kill on the Chaos player's part. Me or one of the other 2 players.

At any rate, I still find Lapse to be a really useful card.

Not him, but Sram is has unparalleled card draw in Mono-W.

Odric has no abilities of his own, provides no anthem, isn't a source of tokens, has no card draw or ramp on him, and isn't nearly as survivable as other weenie Commanders.

A Sram deck can put the pedal to the metal with 2-3 mana.

If it's because you're imagining a politics/pillow fort deck tuned, primarily, to set the rest of the table at each other's throats while making coming for me an uphill struggle, mission accomplished

If it's because I used music from a stupid guilty pleasure web animation that happened to be on the nose to call that out... you know what I'm going to say mission still accomplished.

if it's because said stupid web animation has a cancerous fandom, it only reinforces my theory that EVERY fandom is cancer and the only winning solution is to never look past the media itself. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

hey guys deckbox building fuckhead here

i'm entertaining the possibility of building a 1150 card box for a friend of mine for his cube, and i'm wondering what kind of art to put on the top. i think i'm going to stencil an ornamental frame to line both the top and the bottom of the box, but i think i should also put some kind of MTG related art in the middle of that frame as well. i'd like it to be something abstract and modest in terms of design.

pic related is the last box i built for reference. i like the coalition insignia but it's a little garish in hindsight and i was wondering if there was something similar but less on the nose

Deck Builders, I have a request for you all:

I'm creating an RPG campaign for some friends and I'm looking for NPCs for them to run into. I can weave personalities for them well enough but I only have a few decks cooked up right now. Can someone give me a suggestion or two for decks they can do battle with?
I just need two things from the lists:
-80% Power decks, anything highly tuned or competitive would be too much for them to handle on a regular basis.
-No instant win decks. Combos are okay but things like Door to Nothingness, Felidar Sovereign/Test of Endurance, and Biorhythm are no bueno.

Here's my example:
(pic related)
An NPC who is the leader of a nomadic tribe of assorted slaves and tribe members. The deck would be piloted by Yasova Dragonclaw, focused on taking the opponent's creatures for value.

You know what, no, I'm gonna suggest my favorite burn card. A little beauty called arcbond.

Arcbond is lovely. Arcbond encourages you to pay attention anytime its in your hand and you have the mana. Arcbond lets you hijack anything from a burn spell to a creature attack to piss everybody off. Arcbond lets you chump block with a 1/1 flyer and suddenly burn everybody for 20 when they weren't thinking it was going to happen. Arcbond turns blasphemous acts into fucking murder cauldrons. Arcbond lets you murder the board in all sorts of fun little ways that you won't even realize until some dumb fucker blocks with a deathtouch creature and you just start laughing and laughing.

One of my favorite moments in magic was gaining 400 life from my opponent blocking a lifelinker with malignus. I didn't care that all my lands got blown up that turn by a sydri player everyone should have been focusing on, I just told the table to pay attention properly to a boros deck because sometimes shit can get real and you can randomly dome the entire table and every creature for 24.

Part of the reason you don't see more decks like it is that even when the cards exist to make something powerful out of jank, it is often prohibitively expensive to build. Look at the price tag on that deck. Sure, I've managed to put together a mono-red pillow-fort deck, but it cost me a fair bit.
>>
>>52036041
How does one build Zur anyway? What's the wincon?
>>
>>52036041
Ugh, that art is terrible. Original Zur is far superior.
>>
stupid question, but I'm trying to figure out how to actually win with an azorius pope deck. I typically play in multiplayer games, so mill doesn't really feel viable...I do have Azorius elocuters, but how the shit am I supposed to avoid taking damage for 5 turns from more than 2 enemies?
>>
>>52038594
If you're in multiplayer with blue/white Azorius, you can try to just slow down your opponents and make it easier for them to kill one another.
Focus your debuff/debilitating effects on whomever is winning, and let the other players whittle them down. Repeat until 1v1 and then just lock the last enemy down with bullshit.
>>
>>52038594
>but how the shit am I supposed to avoid taking damage for 5 turns from more than 2 enemies?
Pillowfort and politic your fucking face off. UW has tons of prison, tax and pillowfort effects to get you there.
>>
>>52038566
All the cmc 3 or less auras, then win by commander damage with Zur himself thanks to the ridiculous number of "protection from _" and "_ can't be blocked" and "_ has double strike" auras in WUB.
>>
>>52035969
Infinite mana in Karn, you say?
Mycosynth Lattice + Karn himself = nobody ever has any lands.
>>
>>52038739
That's the fun way. There's the Doomsday/LabMan route too
>>
>>52038566
Typically Voltron, just keep hitting people with Zur until commander damage takes them out.

>>52038594
U/W has a good token potential, you can go for sheer numbers and a win on the ground.

Also you have blue, so... Planar Portal + Beacon of Tomorrows.

Alternatively: Barren Glory, Darksteel Reactor, Felidar Sovereign, Laboratory Maniac, Mechanized Production, and Test of Endurance are all alternate win-con cards available to you.

You could also take the Stasis route and just lock people down with stuff like Winter Orb, Temporal Distortion, etc.

If you want to prevent all damage dealt to you, here are some resources: Ajani Steadfast, Battletide Alchemist, Channel Harm, Charm Peddler, Cho-Arrim Alchemist, Comeuppance, Cover of Winter, Dawn Charm, Encircling Fissure, Endure, Energy Field, Energy Storm, Forcefield, Glacial Chasm, Guardian Seraph, Haazda Shield Mate, Hedron-Field Purists, Hidden Retreat, Inner Sanctum, Invulnerability, Kor Haven, Ith, High Arcanist, Maze of Ith, Martyr's Cause, Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo, Orbs of Warding, Palliation Accord, Pay No Heed, Pentagram of the Ages, Plated Pegasus, Prahv, Spires of Order, Purity, Reverse Damage, Rhystic Circle, Righteous Aura, Riot Control, Safe Passage, Selfless Squire, Sivvi's Ruse, Solitary Confinement, Soratami Cloud Chariot, Statecraft, Vengeful Archon, Winter's Chill.

Also if you want to run Azor's Elocutors, be proactive about it and use counter increasing tech: proliferate, Animation Module, Clockspinning, Deepglow Skate, and Skyship Plunderer.
>>
>>52038460
Whew! Hadn't looked at the price on that thing. You make a very fair point.

Still, it saddens me that in more casual metas, where an unorthodox deck far less tuned than yours could probably still be viable, people still seem to gravitate toward "good stuff." At least in my experience.

Most of my regular playgroup seems to just pull the same-old bog-standard staples off EDHREC, while I'm over here trying to polish up a list for Vhati il-Dal.
>>
>>52038566
Casually, a lot of people play him as a Voltron commander, apparently. Or you can just use him as an enabler for a pillowfort deck, or some other kind of enchantment-focused jank,

Competitively, he's a combo commander, with the potential to tutor up combo pieces or just grab you game-winning "good stuff" like Necropotence.
>>
>>52037863
I can't bring myself to build a deck around him, even though he's so cool. What does he go well with as a part of the 99?
>>
>>52038808
If I had to give advice as to getting your playgroup to do interesting things, try and get them to build around commanders from Kamigawa block. There is some weird and crazy shit in there.

I can attest that Arcbond is a wonderful card. I have a Queen Marchesa deck that revolves around effects like Boros Reckoner and other stuff that redirects damage. Arcbond can come out of nowhere and hit the table for way more damage than anyone was expecting. It's a super fun card.

Speaking of anthems, I want to make a "keywords soup" deck with Odric, Lunarch Marshal and pic related
The goal is to win by swinging with a ton of weenies and tokens with a lot of keywords

What are some must-have cards that can bring a bunch of keywords?
>White Akroma
>Akroma's Memorial
>Eldrazi Monument
What about equipments?

Also, any idea on how to get the non-primary white keywords, like Trample, Deathtouch, Menace and Hexproof/Shroud?
>>
>>52041353
>this AND Odric
They do the same thing and don't stack though.

>equipment?
Yes. Not that your tokens need trample or Hexproof but whatever.
>>
>>52041377
>They do the same thing and don't stack though.
Odric doesn't give landwalk and protection

>Not that your tokens need trample or Hexproof but whatever
Not my tokens but my "big" weenies could use Trample and the creatures with a specific keyword could use Hexproof/Shroud, same for Odric
>>
>>52041437
It's still not going to do much if players can respond to the trigger with removal.

If you just like opening packs for the sake of it and because it "feels" fun, and not for any kind of financial reasons it doesn't really matter what packs you crack for value.

If you really like gambling though and the rush you get from it I would find a box of the first print of OG zendikar, that way you have a chance at cracking a motherfucking black lotus, and you still have fetches to fall back on. Keep an eye on those prices, because boxes might have decreased in value a little after the reprints in MM, making it more affordable to gamble your way to a lotus.

It's a win con dude. Literally lets you kill the table with Maga no matter the life totals. That said, Candlelabra is really only necessary in super cutthroat metas (and personally I think a further subdivision of that is only with high tide decks) and is a bit wasted on a mediocre commander like Maga.

Eh kinda. If you want the cards in EMA, go for it. Value whores are just trying to justify their gambling addiction. MM17 has a better list, but if you don't want anything outside of the money cards, you're in the same boat and might as well but singles.
>>
>>52042961
I'm getting a MM17 to draft it, same as I did with EMA and every Masters set before that, but the EMA was a fucking huge disappointment to me valuewise. Got almost nothing to show for it, my most expensive card was a Vampiric Tutor.
>>
>>52043000
I admit, I took a bath on EMA as well, but that being said, I got a lot of cool things. I basically pulled a full Uril enchantress deck, and wall of omens loves its life in Brago. I have no clue what I'm going to do with all of those rancors, but I'm sure they'll eventually find a deck. That being said, I have 3 tops, a sinkhole, an entomb and a bunch of other fringe playable things. It's not the worst, but I had fun cracking packs, and clearly singles is the best bet.

Wood Elemental in Gitrog Monster and Titania (who also features in Gitrog's 99). I know it's terrible but the look on peoples faces when I cast one of the infamous, perennial choices for worst card (or at least worst creature) ever printed and get actual benefit out of it is well worth the price of admission.

Orcish Settlers in Feldon. I run Feldon as rather Stax-y for starters. I pick settlers rather than any other element of the LD package because Invader Parasite doesn't self-dispose and Avalanche Riders is a 'known' factor, leaving Orcish the one most likely to provoke that beautiful "Wait a minute... oh you son of a BITCH!" response.

>40 Land
This is OK. There's a reason some folks recommend 40 land as "industry standard", especially for higher curve decks, which yours is and you've got land synergies so you do want a lot
>Color
I gave it a few spins in the tappedout test-o-matic and found you had occasional issues with getting UU or RR for the cards that need them. Nothing terrible so far
>Dat Curve.
You have PAINFULLY little to do in the early turns. Again, test-o-matic Surrak was fairly often the first reasonable card I could resolve, and he'd come out on-curve at that. You want to be able to establish board presence faster and with more. This is where mana dorks, mana rocks, and ramp come in. You've got some but you've again focused on going big (as with Explosive Vegetation or Yavimaya Elder) rather than going NOW (As you would with, say, Search for Tomorrow or a Signet)
>Resource Shortfall
In the games where I was able to start casting shit, the deck ran out of gas terribly quick and without establishing what felt like enough of a presence. You are in U/G/x, you should have more card draw than this. One game out of perhaps a dozen quick texts I was able to lead with Temur Ascendency and follow that up with Soul of the Harvest to really get the engine running but you just don't have enough of these sorts of effects to expect them.
>Wat Do?
Cut some lands and some lands-matters cards like Khamal and the hydra. Replace them with rocks/dorks to get you to your functional level faster and some more draw, whether engines like Primordial Sage or one-and-done draws like Divination or Stroke of Genius. In general cut away 6+ cost dudes for cost 4-5 ones with decent effects so by late game you can break out of the dreary grey world of "one turn, one spell" Also you might want to think of dropping a few cards like Beastmaster (which is more of a Tokens card) that are potential blowouts but potential do-nothings for reliable workhorses.
>>
>>52044450
I want to make a Mizzix deck, but I already have a Niv Mizzet deck, they would be pretty different but I don't want another deck in the same colors.

>>
>>52045840
>>52045824
It's obviously voice, the two-drop that makes badass tokens over the powerful but overrated 8-mana overrun.

Seriously, though, Craterhoof is really powerful, often an instant win for a tokens deck that's got a developed board. But then so would be most any overrun effect. Craterhoof is the best but it's not like there aren't similars to downgrade the slot to. Voice is a fairly unique effect that can help you when you're behind and give you a modicum of insurance against getting blown out by wraths. And unlike for Craterhoof there's no budget alternative.
>>
>>52045899
These are fair points.

When I've played with Voice, I always found him under-whelming, because your opponents can often just play around him. There are more efficient ways to make tokens, and more reliable ways to stop your opponents from casting problematic instants. In the end, I always felt like there was a better card I could've been running to accomplish whatever Voice was supposed to be doing. And selling my foil copy for $100 seemed like a better idea than trying to make him work.

Voice might be a decent meta-dependent choice, but I definitely think Craterhoof is the more reliable pick.

How many artifacts do I want to have to consistently turn on Mox Opal? Running 17 right now not counting Mox.

How many rocks do I wanna have to make Paradox Engine+Spells into a consistent wincon?
>>
So how good is Aetherflux Reservoir in multiplayer? My deck gains some life (Obzedat) but not oo much life, should I run it?

You can kill one person with it guaranteed in a life gain deck, and that's very powerful all on its own. It gets a lot stronger if krosan grip isn't popular in your meta though, since then you can hold the table hostage.

Honestly, I'm not impressed by Mox Opal in EDH.

Alright, so since I'm a faggot, I'm trying to switch things up a bit and make a slight tweak to EDH to have a Sorcery as a commander instead. There is no commander tax, but you can only cast your ''signature spell'' once a turn. Sorceries only too. I've been building a few things on cockatrice and it looks like a lot of fun, but I wondered if you guys would try it

For example, I built something with this thing

Yes you are.

This is fucking stupid.

Both a source of life and a wincon for 4 is pretty strong, especially since it goes infinite with Exquisite Blood

Imma play this format with demonic tutor.
Can you handle it?

>no commander tax
Holy fuck that's stupid
I play Time Warp

What is a banlist?

I'm just jamming low cmc rocks that tap for colored mana so I can abuse Paradox Engine.

I made the charitable assumption that everyone understood that cutthroat Maga decks run Clock of Omens. Apparently that was a bit too charitable for some people in this general.

>>52042629
Requires less lands to go infinite. Same number of cards. Also a semi-redundant vital effect. Or do people not run Magus of the Coffers either?
