What spells and feats should I take if I'm making an Arcane Trickster?
>>
Thinking of making a Bugbear Kensai. Weapon choice I was thinking of taking Lance, Greatsword and Longbow but I'm not sure. I'm only taking Greatswords because magic ones seem pretty common.

Also do my Unarmed Attacks get the reach bonus ?
>>
Should I take Crossbow expert at 4 and Sharpshooter at 6, or the ASI instead in place of one of them (I have +3 to dex)
>>
What is the best fighter archetype for a sword-and-board general-purpose fighter?
>>
>>51942260
Silent image, disguise self and feather fall.

>>51942412
Battlemaster has the most combat utility, EK probably has most utility overall if you're clever with your spells.

Of the UA, Knight is pretty good for boarding, you can protect your teammates pretty nicely with it.

But I would probably just say that you go Battlemaster.

Samurai wants you using a d12 weapon.
>>
>>51942260
Find Familiar for advantage/sneak attack all day every day.

Minor illusion for obvious reasons. Sleep for the first four levels, get rid of it later.
>>
>>51942260
Booming Blade + Bonus Action Disengage to make them trigger the extra damage.
>>
>>51942561
Why? It says nothing about it.
>>
>>51942531
It's pretty good for tanking, I admit that. But it lacks the general purpose usefulness Battlemaster has, for example.

It's basically a civilized Barb, even though it doesn't say so.
>>
Why 5etools says that variant humans get +2 cha AND two +1s?
>>
>>51942561
Longsword with both hands on it or bust.

Also Samurai best class.
>>
>>51942615
Probably some mixup with Half-Elves.
>>
>>51942593
I didn't say it requires it, I said it wants it. Having advantage on all melee attacks for a full round is best taken advantage of by using a weapon with a d12 damage die, because you're more likely to crit.

>>51942615
Because Megaanon doesn't have a proofreader and likes to copy and paste.
>>
>>51942337
Unarmed Strikes make weapon attacks, but they're not weapons. Bugbears increase the range of weapon attacks, not weapons.
>>
Why not 2d6?
>>
>>51942587
That's what I thought too when I made my rogue but apparently any enemy with an intelligence higher than three knows how booming blade works and just uses a ranged attack. Still great when it does work though.
>>
>>51942664
So, yeah? It's fucking annoying they don't just call them simple weapons or "Unarmed weapons". Makes the whole thing screwy.
>>
>>51942643
But aren't 2d6s even better than 1d12s?

2d12 is more susceptible to bad rolls than 4d6, even though getting that double 12 would be satisfying.

Anyway, if you're gonna get a LOT of crits, it's better to have the sustained damage of 2d6 than 1d12, but that's just a personal opinion, really.

I'm an odachi person, myself, so Samurai with a Greatsword would be pretty much a no-brainer.

How is Samurai with PAM? Probably sickening, but asking anyway.
>>
>>51942672
>>51942730
>playing a samurai that isn't Half-Orc
Dishonor on you and your entire family.
>>
>>51942730
Samurai with PAM is a disgrace to his family.

A true samurai needs a bow, a horse, and a sword.
>>
>>51942643
>using a weapon with a d12 damage die, because you're more likely to crit.

...Damage doesn't crit.
>>
>>51942687
Yep. It does work.
>>51942362
Crossbow Expert will always do more DPR. Sharpshooter can be calculated to a particular AC for when it does more, and when it does less damage. However for a Battlemaster you can just chuck superiority dice at it using precision attack for the most part.
I can just calc it for you. With +8 to hit because of 5th level, 16 dex, and archery style, and 6.5 avg damage because of 1d6+3, the power attack on Sharpshooter does more until 20 AC with no advantage, and until 21 with advantage.
+1 dex mod does more than Sharpshooter at 20+ AC both with and without advantage. So unless you fight more enemies with 20+ AC than without Sharpshooter is better even ignoring Precision Strike.
>>
>>51942761
Naginata (glaive) is a fine weapon for a girl samurai.

>>51942761
Naginatas. I know horse archery was the thing, but the class itself isn't really optimized for it. Sharpshooter would almost be better for a main Yumi user.

Also, Sentinel + PAM for ultimate salt. Unless they have pole weapons, they can't touch you. Advantageous OA:s at reach that stop opponents to 0ft of speed.

>>51942820
Naginata was the melee weapon of choice for most people, not just grills. Katana is just kind of enigmatic as the sidearm.
>>
>>51942865
>Naginata was the melee weapon of choice for most people, not just grills.

>but apparently any enemy with an intelligence higher than three knows how booming blade works and just uses a ranged attack.

This for BB. If they don't move it's wasted. Granted you can be laying that down every single turn almost but still.

And GFB. What if there is only one target afield? Does nothing happen at all?
>>
>>51942531
Samurai is actually good. If you're just a DPR machine that consumes Precision Strikes on Battlemaster when power attacking then instead of having 4 dice to spend, you can have 6 rounds of advantage attacking. If you have a bonus action attack this could be anywhere from 18 attacks, to 20 (with action surge) to 23 (with reaction attacks and surge).

If you have easy advantage from somewhere it becomes less useful with 3 rounds of resistance.
>>
Is having 16 str and 14 con for a 5th level fighter acceptable or should I spend my 4th level ASI on a raise?

Although, Kanabo were so goddamn heavy that you couldn't really one-hand it. But on the other hand, it is definitely a martial weapon.

>>
>>51942507
Ok, first you offer the players a huge treasure. Like stuff nobody's even seen before.
Then you make them fight for it. Huge fight. Like armies being ground into dust in fields of blood.
And just when they think they'll finally get their reward, that's when you spring the trap on them.
>>
>>51943004
The treasure IS the trap.
>>
>>51942941
So's your face.
>>
>>51943004
I've long thought about this.

I want to run a campaign where the PCs get a chance to loot a dragon hoard, but actually... doing... anything with it, or getting it anywhere, is crazy difficult. 4 people find more than their body weight in gold, how are they going to get it anywhere? Crazy dangerous, especially if they don't already have strongly loyal mercenaries.
>>
>>51942906
BB actually does more depending how accurate you are, like a power attack, since it's 4.5 + mod + 4.5 without movement where if you have no feats dual wielding is 3.5 + mod + 3.5. Sneak dice are worth more the more accurate you are, so depending on AC, and advantage BB either does slightly more, or somewhat less even if it doesn't trigger. You either do a good chunk more, or you lock down a melee dude.
>>
>>51943039
First, they possibly have a wagon and/or horses. Second, if they defeated a fucking dragon, they might as well use its lair as a home base from now on.
>>
>>51942763
Advantage makes you more likely to crit. However, that .5 damage from using 2d6 actually requires a level 9 half orc barbarian or something excessive to get anywhere near a wash. Overall either one is really close in damage.
>>
>>51943055

Yeah, the average is half +.5, so 1d8, and 1d6. Early on, or with DM created enemies it might seem like guards can shoot a bow just as good as swing a longsword, but later on there are various enemies with megarape flails, but 1d8+4 bows.

Thought so, thanks. Where were you getting 1d6 for the offhand attack? (You could use another Rapier for 1d8) and I thought you only added your proficiency bonus rather than your ability modifier?
>>
>>51943246
Without feats to use two weapon fighting both the weapons you use might be light, which caps it at 1d6. With a feat investment you can use two rapiers for 1d8. You still add your ability modifier to hit when two weapon fighting, but you don't add it to damage without a fighting style.

>>
How far into absurdity has a member of your party taken Use Magic Device's rules to use something clearly normally not meant for them?
>>
>>51943569
You can shove as part of your attack action.
>>
>>51943569
Shoving a Creature.
Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.

The target of your shove must be no more than one size larger than you, and it must be within your reach. You make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). If you win the contest, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.

http://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/SA_Compendium.pdf

Are attack rolls and saving throws basically specialized ability checks?

>They aren’t. It’s easy to mistake the three rolls as three faces of the same thing, because they
each involve rolling a d20, adding any modifiers, and comparing the total to a Difficulty Class, and they’re all subject to advantage and disadvantage. In short, they share the same procedure for determining success or failure. Despite this common procedure, the three rolls are separate from each other. If something in the game, like the guidance spell, affects one of them, the other two aren’t affected unless the rules specifically say so. The next few questions touch on this point again.

When you make a Strength (Athletics) check to grapple or shove someone, are you making an attack roll?

> Again, the answer is no. That check is an ability check, so game effects tied to attack rolls don’t apply to it. Going back to an earlier question, the hex spell could be used to diminish a grappler’s effectiveness. And if the grappler’s target is under the effect of the Dodge action, that action doesn’t inhibit the grapple, since Dodge doesn’t affect ability checks.

If you want to go warlock-rogue, generally the best way to do it is about warlock5/rogue15 since after level 5 warlock no longer gives you any more damage unless you reach warlock level 12. At which point it feels more warlock levels and not being pact of the blade might've been better for level 9 spells.

Trying to make a faithful portrayal of Harley Quinn. Basically I need a class and background that allows for a character who is both acrobatic, intelligent, and also proficient in use of the Warhammer. High DEX for sure, good intelligence, and needing something that substitutes STR for DEX.

I was going to make her a Swashbuckling Rogue with the UA Warhammer Master feat, but Warhammer isn't a finesse weapon, so sadly it doesn't work with Sneak Attack... other ideas?
>>
>>51943952
Kensai monk would let you use a Warhammer with Dex but isn't really thematically appropriate relying on Wis as well.
>>
>>51943847
>>51943901
Actually, just remembered thirsting blade probably doesn't work with non-pact-weapons.
That kinda sucks. Not even the longbow invocation is really worth it because it's not a handcrossbow and you can only make it a +X weapon with invocations.

Honestly sounds like bladesinger6/rogue14 or paladin6/swashbuckler14 or one of those sorcerer gishes or... Most other things would be better than warlock because of that. But, eh, I guess some people insist on playing rogue in melee nowadays anyway without GFB/BB.
But warlock with a 2 level dip of rogue for cunning action for kiting was always a cool idea.

In any case, just put whatever whereever. Just remember rogue gets uncanny dodge at 5 for tankiness, warlock gets a power boost at 12.

Galadriel is powerful, but shes 'just' an elf with a Ring of Power.

Outside of Sauron and Tom Bombadil, Gandalf and the other wizards are the most powerful beings in all of Middle Earth.
>>
>>51945878
Gandalf was also stated to be the most powerful Maiar among the Istari, he was just too humble to use it, or even realize that he had it, until he came face to face with the fucking Balrog.
>>
>>51945878
I always like the idea of Gandalf being an Arcane Trickster or similar who's just an incredible liar. Cantrips are enough to intimidate most into going along with what he says, and he bullshits about defeating powerful foes when no-one's looking.
>>
So I took the Urchin background and what mechanical benefit does he mouse give?
>>
>>51946430
+1 cuteness.

Realistically, it's more of a roleplay item. You could use it for pranks, distractions, maybe like a familiar in some ways.

Archetypes are basically subclasses, and every class has at least 2 options in the PHB. In later books and in the Unearthed Arcana (A weekly post where the writers share playtest material), more options for archetypes are revealed.

Each class has multiple choices, and you can have only one archetype per class.

Multiclassing means having multiple different classes, but having two archetypes from the same class is impossible as of now.
>>
>>51946694
>every class has at least 2 options in the PHB

Ehhh. Not all of them are really archetypes, though.
>>
So /tg/, Arctic Circle Druid Lvl 8 with 16 Wis. Do I improve that Wis or get Elemental Adept (Cold) because I have a feeling we might end up fighting demons soon..
>>
>>51946752
I'd say that most of them function similarly enough that I could call them archetypes. What do you mean, exactly?
>>
>>51946752
Such as?
>>
>>51946840
>>51946854
I can't say I've ever really seen Warlock Pacts or Patrons described as Archetypes. I mean, which one would you say is more archetypal in design? Or are they both?

Strictly speaking, RAW (not that it matters), only martials have archetypes, casters have Schools, Arcane Traditions, Pacts, Patrons, Domains, etc.
>>
>>51943861

Quiver of Ehlonna is a nice one. Basically a quiver version of a bag of holding that can hold bows, arrows, javelins, swords, ect. and never weight more than two pounds.

Oathbow is also an option if you're looking for a bow. I think a big one you can find is a Manual of Quickness of Action. It increases your dexterity by 2, and can go past the 20 maximum. The downside of course being that EVERYONE in your party is likely to benefit and there might be an item struggle unless the items are directly being given to a specific person.
>>
>>51945053
You could dump str too for 3 16's if you take a half feat towards dex, con, or wis. Or try 12 con or a different race.
>>
>>51946885
The Warlock is weird because both are basically subclasses / archetypes.

But the point that they only martials have archetypes is semantics and a little bollocks, because only Rogues and Fighters have archetypes, if we go by that. Barbs have Primal Paths and Monks have Monastic Traditions / Ways.

They all function the same, though. We could call them subclasses, but archetype has just kind of stuck.
>>
Tempest Cleric 2 / Divination Wizard X

Would it work? Will it be fun?
>>
>>51946996
Yeah, true enough. I didn't mean it as a "ah but you're all wrong", I just figured if we're explaining it to someone who isn't bothering to read the PHB we might as well give the full overview, finicky details and all.
>>
>>51946885
I always just call them sub-classes. Can't say I have seen archetype be said that often before now but I still grasped exactly what OP was talking about when he said it.
>>
>>51945355
Nature is an Int skill though medicine is wis. Hmm.
>>
>>51945705
Dex is just 'I want bonus action attacks and don't want to be variant human or use a feat because I want to use +2 to charisma and get those neat half-elf stat-ups, so while I'm at it I think I'll grab dex instead of strength for dex benefits, even though it might give me an AC less.'
>>
>>51947016
I guess. I just kind of trusted that they would understand it nonetheless, because even if you read only two classes, you understand that the subclasses work similarly, and each class has them.
>>
>>51947014
>Would it work?
Depends what you're wanting to do with it.
>>
New to 5e, but familiar with 4e and pathfinder. When I read details of spellcasting ("plugging" a spell into a spell slot), I dont see any kind of distinction between arcane spells and divine spells. Am I understanding this right? That I could learn a 1st level cleric spell, but cast it into a 5th level spell slot gained from an arcane class?
>>
>>51943075
Wagons let mounts carry 5x the amount. Let's say you only want to encumber your mounts (draft horses), so that's 50 lbs/pt Str * 18 str = 900lbs/horse, or 1800 for 2.
Subtract 400 for the wagon, and you have 1400 lb to work with.
That's 70,000 coins, so unless you're giving them the treasure entirely in silver and copper, they should be able to fit 90-100% of it in the wagon. I got treasure numbers from 5etools, CR 16-20. Never seemed to generate more than ~60k coins.
>>
>>51947099
Correct.
>>
>>51945370
Half Orc 'evil-curious', give them an in to try and turn you while you're turning them.
>but my cha!
who cares, it's capped at 20 anyway.
>>
>>51947082
The only real reason for differentiating between the two is that archetypes are always taken at a later level, whereas subclasses can be from level 1. It's not really a cause for concern.
>>
I need some help picking between the lightly armored feet and keen mind.

I'm a wizard, and keen mind would allow me to get out of taking notes irl which is kind of helpful, and I was thinking of trying to use it as a roleplaying thing by asking shop owners to show me scrolls before buying them, then recording them to my spellbook later by "remembering" what was written on it

On the other hand if I get lightly armored I can get studded leather armor and have a +2 to my AC and still be able to cast spells.

so I can just take a single level in cleric and have an arsenal of healing available like a similar level cleric would have? No one thinks there's something off about that?
>>

Who actually gives a shit. Maybe next week will be rules for hairstyles.
>>
>>51947099
In short, you gain spell SLOTS by total caster level and can use them for whatever, but learn KNOWN spells on a class-by-class basis.
Exceptions apply (warlock slots, prestige classes...), but 60% of the time it works like this all the time.
>>
>>51947125
You would only be able to prepare a level 1 cleric's spells. It's not that impressive for your wizard to cast cure wounds (5th). You won't have mass healing word or prayer of healing, or even spiritual weapon with that level.
>>
>>51947125
You won't have either of
>higher level clerical spells
>cleric class features

You'll be the guy powering up cure spells while the real cleric will res people up. The fucking favored soul will heal more and better than you!

It's not OP at all, in fact it's the most balanced multiclassing mechanic for casters since 3e at least, if anything martials should get something similar for the extra attacks at least.
>>
>>51947120
You can probably get more AC from mage armor and you can probably afford the spell slot for it if you're asking this question.
>>
>>51947120
>keen mind would allow me to get out of taking notes irl which is kind of helpful

Only if you trust your DM to remember what you can't, which won't necessarily always be true.
>>
>>51947201
>martials should get something similar
They do. It's called not being a moron and making sure your multiclassed features synergize on your attack action.
>>
>>51947188
>>51947201
Seems more balanced when you spell it out like that. That said, I think I've enjoyed how spellcasting works in this edition more than any other. Please excuse my nubile ignorance, and thanks anons.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/782735675/gods-and-goddesses-a-5th-edition-supplement

The worst part is that you get fighting styles at level 2 and oaths at level 3, so an oath-specific one makes no sense. The whole preview document has terrible grammar.

Jesus fuck

This is why you don't ask an artist to do things that AREN'T art. It's like asking the health and saftey inspector to cover your shift in the mines.

Fortunately this doesn't want to make me kill myself as they actually put a slightly good pitch that would convince anyone who's a massive moron to provide money by claiming experience with 5e's design. If it were just 'Oh, I'm some random fuck making homebrew' then they wouldn't get any money.
>>
>>51947410
There's a feat, but you won't get the invocations.
>>
>>51947433
>>51947376
Actually, seeing as how they SOMEHOW can't make this without the 14,000 (Being too poor to print or something)
Does this mean if they don't reach 14,000 by friday everybody is saved and gets their money back?
>>
>>51947125
Spell scaling tend to be shit
The 1st level Spell Cure Wounds heals 1d8+WIS
Upcast it to 9th level and it heals 9d8+WIS, which is about 45
6th level spell Heal heals 70
Upcast it to 9th and it heals 100
9th level spell Mass Heal heals up to 700 divided as you choose between anyone in a 60ft radius.
So you gotta pump levels into the class simply for the better spells.
>>
>>51947388
Booming blade / green flame blade is very much like eldritch blast.

It's always an upgrade over a no-extra-attack-or-funny-ability attack.
By its standard, it doesn't deal competitive damage.
If you get features (such as eldritch blast getting invocations) its damage becomes competitive, i.e. war magic, quickened spell, sneak attack, etc.

What?
>Defensive fighting style gives you +1 AC
That's it
>Dueling fighting style gives you +2 damage if you are using a d8 or less weapon
That's it
So by level 4 this is objectively better than defensive or duelist, by 17 it is doing three times more damage than duelist while still nearly invalidating the fact that you can't use shields.

None of the other fighting styles scale, why should katanas? It is literally just +2 to hit or +2 damage or some rerolls or something, not +6 damage, +1 AC, and +3 to wisdom saving rolls by level 18.

>Gandalf is an angel

No shit, hence why I said Gandalf is an angel, and in the reply chain pointed out that the wizard (in a D&D sense) is Galadriel, and although a wizard's forte is not 1v1 fighting, Galadriel still does way more impressive stuff than Gandalf. I would always pick Galadriel for my team, unless I knew it was primarily going to be about 1v1 fights.

And its not *guaranteed* she couldn't take out a balrog one way or another, but yeah, 1v1 in ME seems to be about combat strength and courage every time, not magic.

I don't know what a dex paladin is gonna do. Most fancy swords, especially holy ones, are gonna be long or great swords. They can survive, but I'm not sure what a dex paladin is to do in actual combat.

Multiclassing in 5e is VERY OP and it is an optional rule.

People bitch bitterly about bladesingers every single day despite the fact that they are totally obsoleted by a single level in life cleric.
