Good eye, the reasoning behind the plinth was to make it very cold and very dim, in order to contrast with the brightness and warmth of the model. Also I was getting tired of this project already so I wanted to pull it out fast.
I also didn't want the 2 fires to compete with the mace so I toned them down quite a bit.

Might as well repost it here.

Planning on getting up at about 5am tomorrow and assembling around 100 minis. You guys want pics of the Assemblathon?
>>
>>51557914
Sure.
>>
>>51557871
One thing that's been a bit of a theme while watching this project has been tying colours into the rest of the mini. The purple of the candles ties into the mace handle and the torches somewhat to the mace, but the huge grey area doesn't connect to the red, green or creams.

I think could have been room to do that with some green algae discolouration on the rocks and some cream tones in there here and there, perhaps? You would retain the overall warm-cold contrast between the red armour and grey stone, and add a little visual interest to the rock.

We're getting into some difficult stuff here, but you're getting to a point where the overall atmosphere of the piece becomes important: the temperature and colour of your overall light source and the way that effects everything illuminated by it.

I'm in no way qualified to tell you how to make these changes, but Massive Voodoo does some nice step-by-steps talking about atmosphere, and that could be something to keep in mind for Angry Ron's composition.

Still love it overall.

Theron Photo Manip.jpg

What is /wip/'s opinion on photo manipulation?

Yesterday's shitposting fest led me to talk to a professional photographer friend and had him walk me through what he would do to take pictures of minis and I was surprised to find that the last step he had me do was go through and start manipulating the photo.

Pic related; left is the raw photo, right is after some adjustments. I can definitely see why he had me do it -- in reality, that gray background was nearly blinding white but phone cameras are stupid and have to balance everything out so it came out grey, and so the manipulation was basically to unfuck what the phone fucked with. The picture on the right does absolutely look truer to the actual appearance of the mini. But... it does still feel like cheating.

What do you guys think? Is this a line too far, or is anything that makes the picture better something worth pursuing?
>>
>>51558092
>massive priming session
If rattlecan, you'll need a bowl of warm (NOT boiling) water and to make sure you don't stop shaking that motherfucker, you'll be at a real risk of the propellant becoming too cold and not giving you enough pressure.
>>
>>51558037
The imperial fist looks weird because he's not flat footed. It's like he's pole vaulting or hopping on the spot.
>>
>>51558150
I tweak brightness/contrast/hue/saturation of pics of my minis to match reality closer than raw pics can.
>>
>>51558150
Almost every photo we use to learn:
>Demon winners
>box art
>tutorials
>White Dwarf

has been manipulated. I don't tend to do it in /wip/ because cropping and resizing is enough for people to give the sort of feedback I need, but I absolutely have nothing against it.

>>
>>51557968
Thanks for the review! Indeed, atmosphere and composition are two subjects I still need to understand and practice, as I haven't painted many display pieces yet. For this one my main focus was to practice NMM and apply color theory, I'll definitely keep composition in mind in my next work.
>>
>>51558150
Photo manipulation can make an average photo better, and is a staple of professional photography (it's also the reason why studio images tend to seem noticeably brighter than the models are in reality).

generally speaking it's going to be better to just get a better lighting/diffusion setup, but some editing in post usually won't hurt

So currently I've got a pair of unarmoured Knight Warden legs, a base that can't go any further till I glue him down, and the rest unassembled.

I'm wondering whether to order some magnets and greenstuff and have a shot at magnetizing him, or to just pick a variant and build the rest now. Not used either greenstuff or magnets yet.

Thoughts? Also, I want to paint him up as House Malinax, any idea on how to get the brownish colour on the transfers for the armour plates?

"Photo manipulation" has an undertone of dishonesty and faking about it, suggesting that you change the photo to make shit look like something it isn't.

That's not necessarily true though. A lot of photo manipulation can, and should, be done to make the photo represent the motif better, because your camera probably ain't gonna do all that good a job of it on its own. (And what you're doing there is mostly just stuff you could have done by setting the camera settings and light setup just right from the start as well, just after the shutter clicks instead of before it.)

The photography here isn't to show off how well we can wield a camera, it's to show off the minis. If post-processing helps then it's in no fucking way whatsoever cheating, not using it might be, as your mistakes disappear into the murk.

(Of course, in photography any post processing is generally considered an integral part of the process, so they will tend to include it as well without any thought of cheating. back in the film era it was of course absolutely necessary, and Photoshop has simply slotted itself in as the dark room of the digital era.)

Not quite done with anything on sarge, but baseless superstition has taught me not to spend too much time working on one (primarily white) model in a single stretch or you'll fuck it up.

>unsure of the colour for the cable
>model made out of cables

you might specify? if you mean the servo skull one, generally those corrugated ones are painted black with grey highlights. The plasma coil would look good if its highlighted in light blue, imagine if you heat a coil of electric wire up, it slowly starts to glow on the edges. I'd suggest another thin coat on the cloth and maybe paint some trim gold or drybrush some bronze on it to pick it out.

Would it make sense fluff-wise to have an eldar army made of units from different craftworlds?

I find a bieltan scheme looks best for guardians and serpents, but saim-han looks best for jetbikes and similarly for other craftworlds and units.
>>
>>51562454
You can fluff it as craftworlds helping one another out in battle, but it will certainly be an unusual army. I find it odd that you prefer different craftworlds for different units though, usually a craftworld is picked from a combination of colour scheme and fluff combined rather than just colour scheme.

This guy is a belated birthday present for 6 year old nephew; I got him a pack of 6 terminators for his birthday and said we'd paint them together. I primed them all with zenithal priming and had him paint 5 of them (they're just washed or inked, so the priming creates a neat gradient and he feels like he did something) and I did this one.

I kinda cut some corners in spots; there's some... real ugliness in areas here. The armor's not smooth, the face is awful, the mold lines aren't cleared, there's some weird gunk in a couple areas that I assume is rogue superglue (I bought the termies preassembled from a store for $20 and didn't clean them up), but my nephew wanted the sword to look cool so I gave that my all and tried to follow a basic power sword tutorial.

Definitely not my proudest mini, but, I learned some things and in the end my nephew loves it so all's well that ends well.

What's with the chalkiness of the pants? Also, always follow a vibrant colour up with a wash to bring back those shadows, else it'll stick out like a sore thumb, and you should be building your bright colours up in layers rather then going a thick glob that'll obscure detail.
>>

When I drybrush it comes out like that.

>follow a vibrant colour up with a wash to bring back those shadows

I did wash it, though.

>building your bright colours up in layers rather then going a thick glob

i did do that, in fact i think i thinned the paint more than i should have. I'm starting to think that I fucked up when i was priming the model because some of the detail was lost.
>>
>>51569180
Talking about the bright yellow which seems to have obscured the ruffled fabric texture there.

Also snow looks weird, the pants colour is weird, the tassels on the right shoulder are just sloppy and the bolt pistol barrel isn't drilled, plus it could do with another colour (probably gold to tie back into the colours you already have on the mini) to make it look interesting. It's all a learning process though.
>>

out fucking standing. like the one anon said, there could be a little more color added to the base, but even so I think it's pretty fine as is. The purple on the mace handle seems a little off to me, and I can't really say why. I suppose it ties into that sort of violet grey for the head?

some darker washes would go a long way to making it look better. Even if you don't want to edge highlight, as is the gold and hair in particular look very flat. Really like the sword though. Washes on those skulls would also really make them look less shapeless.

>How many models does Inq28 usually run per team?
Usually about 5ish.
>Also, how does AdMech do in Inq28?
AdMech is not a list or something. There is a techpriest and skitarii archtype in the Inquisitor rulebook, but you can play any character you can think of. It's a roleplaying game that needs a GM.
Inq28 can me a variety of things though, maybe you are interested in playing In the Emperor's Name, which his a mix of Inquisitor and Necromunda rules that evolved into In her Majesty's Name and is now a game with it's own miniature range.
>Is it conceivable for me to run the completed Sydonian Dragoon servitor-horse conversion as a miniature with rules in it?
In vanilla Inquisitor there were no rules for mounts or vehicles.

The spirit of the game is 'do whatever the hell you want', though.
>>
>>51570351
>Can I superglue over primer, or will it fuck up the bond?
unless the primer is not real primer not really. Because superglue does not actually produce a chemical weld like plastic glue does it doesn't matter.

>>51570393
>Will spraying primer over magnets weaken the connection at all?
Unless you use ferropaint no. The magnetic field will not be affected by paint.
>>51570393
>Also, what's a good way to drill straight holes in irregular pieces? I want to magnetize my Tau Battlesuits but the place the weapons attach to the arm is very oddly shaped and there's no flat area to drill a hole
You use a needle or something like that to mark where you want the hole. Then use the guide to drill. That way you prevent slippage.
>>
>>51570433
Well it's more like an irregular hole. Since I'm superautism about things and the weapons are supposed to be ambidextrous, I'm drilling straight through them (they're pretty thin) setting a magnet in the middle and putting a raised magnet on each arm. (the extent of how raised it is is dependent on how recessed the weapon magnet ends up being) I might have to slap some green stuff in the weird L-shaped holes in the arms to get it to sit properly

This will be my first attempt at magnetising anything. Hell the extent of my modeling experience is building 10 Firewarriors and painting four of them. Going to be making the battlesuits dead last because I like them the most. Going to practice magnetising on the missile pod and maybe the drones. I'm just trying to think things through now while I'm doing simpler things

If anyone's interested, here's why: I'm not looking to go all out in a big fancy conversion (although making a Pyramid Head head out of plasticard is gonna take some doing), me and some friends just went in on Silver Tower together today and we're each just doing something to make our heroes a little special. My buddy is making his Knight Venator to look like that blind archer from the Dark Souls expansion.

Daemon Prince progress. Decided to go simple with the head, tried to do an uglier version of Morla from the never ending story with a bonus proboscis because I wanted him to look old and wise as well as gross. Pretty happy with it.

Couple of touch ups here and there but otherwise he is finished.

Inq28 is a 'narrative driven collaborative storytelling game' for want of a better explanation, you don't really have armies and factions and units, just characters.

As long as you come up with a cool backstory for whatever models you're using, people should be very happy to let you run it. Pic related is a conversion somewhat similar to what you're doing, from the Inq28 board on theammobunker.
>>
>>51565106
It's not often it happens but I think this is one case where someone's paint job is actually being held back by their choice of paint. The metals are really lumpy/glittery and I don't think that's your fault but just from your choice of gold paint.

Is that true for the Retributor Armor spray as well? A friend picked that spray up, but it looks a little more like gold than the brass color from the pot. We weren't sure what to make of it.

I think the one right above is the ultramarine from the greekish crest.
>>
>>51570809
I'm pretty sure retributory has to go over a standard primer as well. you can apply it as a basecoat however.
>>
>>51567194
you could add a little acrylic medium to it, that should thicken it a little bit.
Not the stuff from Vallejo or GW, but from a craft brand like Golden or Schmincke.
That tends to be fairly thick stuff.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this because I have not really been a /tg/ regular for like 6-7 years.

Back in the day I was interested in 40k and a friend who stopped playing gave me a Blood Angels army. Like 60 or so models ranging from marines to dreads.

So that is all cool since I am pretty sure its like two or three hundred plus dollars worth of models. Downside is his paintjobs are so attrocious I dont think I could show these to anyone without being embarrassed. Literally globbed on on some of the characters to the point you cant make our features of their face for example.

I have no experience with painting but would like to look into it. First order of business is how can I go about removing paint from these guys without destroying them and is there a way to do it en mass rather than working model by model?
>>
Anyone got a good recipe for ginger hair?
>>
>>51571301
removing paint from models is easy. The trick is choosing the right liquid to soak them in.

Whichever your choice, get an old toothbrush too. A new one will also suffice, but don't use it for brushing your teeth after.

>Rubbing Alcohol - 5 min
Easy to get and removes paint very fast, but will not remove primer.

>Simple Green - ???
This stuff sucks but some people swear by it. I left some models in it for months and it did very little to the paint.

>Super Clean - 24 hours
Removes everything. An ultrasonic cleaner cuts the time down to 30-60 minutes, rather than 24 hours. HOLY SHIT THIS STUFF CAUSES CHEMICAL BURNS PLEASE BE SAFE AND USE GLOVES. Buy it in the automotive section of your hardware store.
>>
>>51571331
also pray your friend did not use enamel paints. Those will never come off.
>>
>>51571301
You're going to have to scrub whatever method you choose, unless you're willing to invest in a very large ultrasonic cleaner. The fluid you use will depend on which country you're in, the following advice is for Brits, Americans may have to chime in if you're across the pond.

For metal models: Soak models in nail polish remover with acetone (check label), scrub with a toothbrush and water. Shouldn't need to soak for long, overnight is probably overkill.

For plastic models: Soak in brown dettol, scrub with toothbrush and methylated spirits - do not use water until you've removed all the paint as it will gunk up. You'll probably want to let the models soak for a few days.

It's fairly time-consuming and smelly, so I'd advise wearing a mask for the fumes and some gloves so you don't dry out the skin on your hands.

I have seen some very glowing reviews of a product called Biostrip, but I haven't tried it myself so I can't recommend it.

Basically, buy yourself some cheapo plastic tubs and toothbrushes, some cheap nail polish remover (supermarket own brand will do) and some dettol and meths and then start soaking.

>>
>>51571502
ultrasonic cleaners are great, but they have a few caveats

cheap ones will be too small to fit tanks.

big ones can get really expensive

don't crowd the basket. It works best with it doesn't have too many models in it at once.

it shuts itself off automatically after 3 minutes, so you need to push the button again. Easy to do if you have it near your painting station and are painting something else while you strip

How would I go about dry brushing a black model?

I want to dry brush the armor of some Death Company so I don't spend forever just edge highlighting them with a normal layer paint. Should I use a silver (Necron Compound) or a grey (Dawnstone)?
>>
>>51571623

If that's yours, then you are drybrushing incorrectly.

you should not be dry brushing flat panels, or they look like your picture there... just dry brush to catch the very edge of the corner / or edge of the area you're painting.

but don't use silver, use grey or very dark blue

The ones surrounding the devilfish I made with some green fluff from the modelstore, glued onto paperclips wrapped in masking tape. The stick trees are literally just twigs off an aesthetic tree near my house. The storebought ones there are the pine trees.

You can probably make a whole heap on the cheap if you spend some time making branches and then go nuts with the glue and flock....

Yeah I've found people on /tg/ don't really like this scheme much. Most people seem to hate the green - it's a bit overdone.

This is my "babby's first airbrush" army. It exists purely to practice airbrushing skills! Very little on these models are done by brush.

Also I realised why the photos are so grainy - I fucked up and had the ISO set too high...I left it on auto.

I think it's impressive if you don't know how it's done. But I've seen a hundred airbrush stencil armies and since the first it's looked pretty poor.

Add in the simple attempt at OSL with the green lights: look at it and tell me it looks "realistic" at all: it is just like the pattern. It looks fake and makes it look like a toy. People in /wip/ can dislike it: we spend lots of time and love painting our models so seeing something like this hurts me.

Airbrush is best used in moderation for certain techniques, not as a replacement for a normal brush in all instances.

>>51572353

>>51572407
Again, nothing here is an attempt at realism. I understand all of what you've said, but that is not the point of the scheme. It's meant to look "tableworthy" in the shortest time possible.

>People in /wip/ can dislike it: we spend lots of time and love painting our models so seeing something like this hurts me.
>Airbrush is best used in moderation for certain techniques, not as a replacement for a normal brush in all instances.
Don't get all upitty. I am aware. I stated in my posts above that the whole army was designed to be airbrush heavy to practice airbrushing - I've just started with it.

Here's an example of some model's I've painted with both airbrush and brush, before you get all
>implying
That I don't pour time and love into my models.
>>
>>51572353
I think it's the right track, but you would need to do the actual lightsource brighter as well, the white you did on the lens is a start, but it'd be better to sort of blend it down. Then I think you'd need to edge highlight those near the source with a near bright color. The key would be making sure that none of your OSL is as bright as the light source itself. As it stands, it just looks like a splotch of the same color. I think you said you were trying to get these out for a game session, but I think if you're looking to improve them in the future, the OSL is what you should focus on.

Lots of spots will be missed on those models, they're my quick spray and pray army.

Interestingly, I started them with not much love for the Tau - I usually fucking hate Tau. I got rekt by an optimized stealth cadre and decided I wanted to get one for myself. So the whole scheme was meant to be lazy and quick.

Drill your barrels
Recess wash where the power fist arm meets the shoulder
The gold is flat and boring, maybe some brighter highlights
Fists decal on the AC shoulder
skull decal on his left knee
Maybe make the rivets metal
The metal on his leg joints need highlights
Where the cowl (or whatever it is) meets the body a recess wash.
Wash around the metal rings and/or paint them as optics
But most importantly: DRILL YOUR BARRELS

Also, idk, but I'm not super hyped about the New Delhi style base.
>>
>>51572249
I reckon that looks wicked, nice and clean.

I think you should drill out the barrels a bit, add some black gunpowder flash around them, and add some text to the paper - that'd probably be enough for the model.

The base needs a drybrush. Maybe add some bushes as well.

Otherwise top work so far.
