Now I can post this image because it's a Modern Staple edition
>we need to wait before going out saying it needs to be banned
>people will eventually figure out how to stop it
>against a deck that gets fast mana and doesn't care about quarter and other conventional land removal methods
>against a deck that can get big shit out really fast with disregard, including a free minion that can get really big really quickly because of it
I always said I wanted to see modern burn. This weekend, I got my wish.
>mfw during this pro tour
Drowner of Hope have such a fitting name
It cares about quarter, having your Eldrazi Temple replaced by a Wastes is not a good trade and at least one game was won yesterday because the Eldrazi player ran out of gas after a couple quarters.
Chalice of the Void. Seriously, its been on my to do list long before the PT because I love the card. I used to have a set that I got for $9. Same story with Eye of Ugin. I guess I'm an idiot.
Welp, nice Pro Tour guys. I'm going to go hang myself in my closet now.
THE FINAL SOLUTION:
>Unban everything and remove white bordered cards from the format forever
Would this save Modern forever?
>Banning Twin will make a more diverse meta
>Twin is oppressing other FAIR DECKS AND FAIR STRATEGIES
>"guys its rly hard to test for 50 sets in modern how would we know the eldrazi lands would completely bust eldrazi pls no bully"
How can wizards be so terrible at their job
Very easily could you make Eldrazi Stompy. It's already just a better version of Zoo, and Zoo sees play in Legacy.
The only saving grace for Legacy is that you have powerful counter-magic/pillowfort cards to give control some breathing room
They wouldn't. BW Eldrazi would slap its shit with 4 ThoughtNazi, 4 IoK/Duress, 2 Thoughtseize, 4 paths and 2 dismembers. Chump blocks for days with Lingering Souls, mainboarded Relics to cockblock Snappy and all sorts of nasty shit. Or the UR version would straight up race it. Or the colorless version would sit on chalice at 1.
Eldrazi are straight up power creep, that wizards fucking knew would catch on since they reprinted eye and temple.
>mfw bought three before the PT even began
I should take up a job as a speculator
God, same, I honestly didn't see Reality Smasher going anywhere, so wasn't too hyped about it, but now that with the Mist Reshaper and Thought-Knot Seer I got from prizes, my pool looks so much nicer in retrospect.
>still 0 Legacy support
>forced to play Modern or Standard which both get worse every year
Honestly if they don't do something soon I might as well quit Magic.
Just abondon the reserve list and print Eternal Masters so I can finally play a non meme format.
Its probably comparable with MUD. You don't have as strong a disruptive element because you want to run eldrazis instead of lodestones but you're more aggressive and don't take pain from your lands
Of course, you could always just run the sol lands anyway.
At the very least MUD has some new toys
its not just that, control is kept in the format because of combo. its something people seem to have forgotten. control is playable because the decks that dunk on control are supposed to be kept in check by fast combo decks that in turn fold to control. this makes all of the decks make concessions in deckbuilding to have game against the other archetypes and prevent degenerate strategies that push out the deck that they get beaten by.
with combo artifically kept out of modern and control kept from having counterspells and cantrips to find their important answers, modern can never have a healthy metagame
Well obviously they can't have the hosts be all like "oh lol so broken!!!11! instant ban tomorrow guise".
But yea behind the scenes someone is already thinking whether or not they need to ban something or what they could do instead.
>YOU'RE GOING TO WORLDS, NIGGA
I wish. For whatever reason, I have a playset of the faggot.
Well first Let's dispel this fiction once and for all that Wizards doesn't know what they're doing. They know exactly what they're doing; they're undergoing a systematic effort to change Modern and make Magic more like the rest of the TCG's.
If we play Cube we'll embrace what makes Magic the greatest TCG in the world.
Cube is already the best Magic format, but anyone that wants to play the game competitively has been fucked by the last two sets.
>BFZ including fetchable dual lands leads to the most expensive standard format in history
>OGW creates a modern archetype that has likely broken the format
The deck isn't really susceptible to 1-for-1 removal, and if you're spending T2 to kill one of their guys you've already fallen behind.
8Tomb Eldrazi, with decent representation, will continue to win events because other decks have to nut draw AND not fall to disruption to win the match.
>Just doom blade out affinity bro
Eldrazi does the same thing as Affinity except it doesn't get blown out by random cards like Creeping Corrosion and vandalblast. Just accept your new tentacled masters.
>Implying there has been an above average draft set since KTK.
Cube is the only thing keeping me playing to be honest, I haven't touched modern since October and it doesn't seem like that is going to change anytime soon.
Spot removal doesnt hurt eldrazi much because they either already got your best card, might get a new card, make you discard a card to cast it or got to play a bunch of free lands.
>mfw checking box with draft chaff
>mfw 11 Endless Ones
>mfw 6 Drowners of Hope
>mfw 7 Blight Herders
>mfw 4 MM Eldrazi Temples
>mfw last price pack contained a foil TKS
Because the one thing lacking in every Magic community is people who have stopped playing not showing up to remind players that the reason they quit is because the game has shit the bed.
Five years from now you won't see many who claim they've been playing for longer than five years. It's going to be lifers, newbies and kids with plenty of disposable income just like how Wizards likes it.
so if wotc doesn't print modern playable cards you are all going to be bitching, if they do you will be bitching anyways.
no one expected eldrazi to be this good so the meta has not adapted to it. wait at least a couple of months before crying "broken".
there's such thing as a dominant deck that just needs time for the meta to adapt
then there is eldrazi which beats zoo and burn and affinity at the aggro game, has bigger dudes than mid-range, has more reach and self protection than control can deal with, and ends the game by turn 4 or sooner so combo can't race it.
Go ahead and list some sideboard cards that impact the eldrazi deck before turn 2 when they thought nazi you. or before turn 3 when they reality smasher you. I'll fucking wait.
All right, with all these cards jumping in price, there have to be some cards that were previously high that are dropping now, right? Is there a website that'll keep track of that kind of thing?
>second only to affinity in speed
>consistency and resilience of a midrange deck
>2 mana 4/5 clique
>0 mana clones and 2/2s that can be late game 12/12s
>3 mana 5/5 haste trample with upside
>3 mana conscripts
>all uncountable because of caverns
>late game tutor each turn for must answer cards
>beats single target removal
>dead before you can cast any viable sweeper
>builds better board presence faster than any other deck
>essentially no conditional cards
>lets print sol lands that can only be used in one archetype with already aggressively costed creatures while banning all the other fast mana in the format, seems like a good idea
Friend just made the colorless eldrazi deck last night and challenged me to make a deck that could beat it saying its unbeatable. I built this and crushed him 5 games in a row. Of course this deck is god awful and will lose to most fair decks with little effort on their part. But hard countered the pro tour list pretty handily. Their only answer is ratchet bomb ticking up to 3 and that's just too slow to stop koth from ulting with moon and bridge out, and all the draws to get what you need. so just saying, their are answers. But do you really want to make a deck that beats eldrazi but loses to EVERYTHING else?
alright alright you guys might be right. so what do you think modern is going from here? are they banning the sol lands? should they? or will they keep printing more powercreep?
>let's print sol lands that can be used in one archetype with already aggressively costed creatures while banning all the other fast mana in the format, seems like a good idea
>Had someone throw in a foil Endless One to a trade last week.
I'm okay with this. I've been picking those up for a while. I'm pissed I missed the opportunity to buy mimics though.
Only when both are legal. If one were to be banned, temple would weaken eldrazi more. Temple enables turn 2 thought-knots and reality smashers. Its impossible to cast a turn 2 thought-knot and reality smasher with just ugin and ugin is a legendary card so you can't play more than one at once; making having multiple more of a liability. Plus you can't cast your disruption cards with an eye of ugin alone on turn 1.
>there are people who didn't call memedrazi shitstomping everything ever as soon as twin was banned
>there are people who think 70%+ memedrazi field is healthy
>there are tards in this very thread who will continue playing this cancerous format.
feels great being a legacyfag right about now.
Eye of Ugin provides card advantage late game, giving the Eldrazi decks (and Tron) good matchups against Control decks, further distorting the metagame.
Ban Eye, Control needs the help.
Nah, Baby Lili is shit. Madness in T2 wont make her expensive anon, plus its not good in CoCo decks so stop with the meme plz we are not guilty of you being bad at evaluating a card. A 2/3 Lifelink is not enough to stop Goys and our new Eldrazi masters so stop with the baby lili meme plz.
Ah, but one Eye can let u plop down 1-4 Memdrazi Mimics on turn 1, one temple can only plop down 1 Mimic.
2 Eldrazi Temples on turn 2 can cast a thoughtknot seer, but an Eye of ugin and a temple can do the same. BUT an Eye of Ugin and and Eldrazi Temple can plop down 2 Matter Reshapers on turn 2, can 2 temples do that?
And lastly Eye gives u fuel in the late game.
Not to mention it doesn't even tap for its affect so it syncs well with Urborg, Tomb of Modern.
I'd say the eldrazi deck would still be strong with just Temples, but would be more balanced and sustain itself as a tier 1 deck, and not the over oppressive shit that it is currently.
But what good is 4 mimics if you can't reality smasher or thought-knot turn 2? It gives you time to answer it. Pyroclasm is GG with a play like that.
Eye alone can't cast 2 matter reshapers turn 2 either and it has a harder time paying for other colorless mana costs than temple.
With just eye eldrazi would likely revert to a slower late game deck as opposed to a fast aggro one; which is good for the meta.
>Better buy a playset of every double check land and every fetch if you wanna be competitive, goyim
>Playing blue? You objectively suck unless you buy four $80 jace's
>Playing anything that isn't aggro? Four giddeons
>Want to use Eldrazi's? Better compete with those other hundred cucks racing to walmart to buy Wizards RnD another car
>Want Allies? You really don't
>Want RDW, the supposed cheapest archetype in magic? $600
>realization that I'm sharing a general with this person
Honestly I hope all this brings some players over. FoW is pretty good and cheap which is nice, especially after Cheshire rotates out. I need more players at locals too ;_;
>Standard is cheaper
lol, no, not in the long run. Not when you have to constantly keep up to date with your list in order to be competitive. Not when you have to constantly buy and resell shit to keep up with rotations. I built affinity years ago. It's still the fucking same deck right now, give or take a few numbers.
>better deck diversity
I'll give you that, unfortunately.
I feel like just finishing storm. I don't want to build a deck that's just going to hit a ban (Eldrazi, Affinity), Jund is too expensive, and I thought of control but its really not very viable. Thankfully Storm has been neutered hard and is thus off the list of potential bannings because the deck sucks now.
really? i feel like the deck needs both lands to be strong
its just mediocre without both, because you need to increase your odds of having 1 or the other in play in the early turns
I'm new to magic because all my co-workers play... I decided to go with a 1000x card bulk box from ebay and an elspeth vs kiora duel deck box. For 35 bux I can make, as I feel, a decent casual deck for just about any color.
But I dunno what to do now. How do I expand? Buying booster packs feels dumb, because they're supposedly designed for maximum draft enjoyment ie, you won't get many doubles of good cards even if you buy a lot of them? So if I like playing a certain way, the optimal way to expand my collection is to just buy singles...? Or is there something I should purchase right now that's worth it? Sorry for shitposting this thread with my newb question.
I really like Hedron crab, by the way, it's perfect for milling. I like being a mill fag - anything in the modern set I should especially get?
the deck is still very strong with just eye, you just need to play an urborg version and maybe tune it to be more like the old one that ran expedition maps or other search cards like stirrings
without eye its just bad aggro/midrange, the one sol land isnt enough to make it good
eye is the pin of the deck, its everything
Speculating about bans now is super premature. Nobody knows how the format will shape up on the next few weeks in Magic Online. It could very well be that the Eldrazi that took this PT by storm will end up not being the best deck after a while or that it's the new best deck but not broken enough to get banned. Remember that there was extremely limited time after the bans to test for this PT and none of the new decks have gone through the hivemind playtesting them thousands of times.
I don't care if eldrazi sticks around, maybe they could just ban reality smasher or TKseer to make it a little weaker. The only problem is that the format is completely devoid (ha, got the joke?) of control, and not just since Twin's ban.
Buy singles. If you buy boosters, get people to play limited with.
You can build a mill deck with modern-legal cards but it won't take down any tournaments. Might crush at your kitchen table though.
Non-Eye of Ugin G/B eldrazi, what should I add/remove from/to the Maybeboard?
you either study the meta and buy the singles you want for your constructed deck or play draft/limited and get a new deck every time.
people who buy boosters only do so because they like cracking packs and gambling but its very likely they wont break even most of the time.
the best way to "expand" your collection is to go drafting, this way at least you will get a deck you can use later and not just jank you will never get to put on any deck.
>is there something I should purchase right now that's worth it?
if you want to buy something thats preconstructed the origins clash pack has standard and modern playables. the modern event deck is going for around $75 but has a lot of staples in it.
esper mill is a tier 3 deck that can steal some games from the higher tiers but you need lots of fetches and that really expensive UB mill ten card for it to work.
hedron crab is strongest with fetchlands ie polluted delta or flooded strand, but i guess evolving wilds/terramorphic expanse could work in casual setting. i think blue and black would be your best bet as you get mind funeral, breaking // entering, and creature removal.
I'm lucky to live in an area with a pretty active scene full of people who either don't care about the art or just get a good laugh at some of the more ridiculous shit and play to enjoy the mechanics.
Now if we could just get R/R to stay go forever.
Thanks. I don't have any local game stores in my area... what's the best online retailer for singles, would you say? Star city was recommended to me, but they seem on average a little higher...
I just bought 2 playsets of Simian Spirit Guide for 5 dollars each, so that's 40 dollars right out the window
Hope I can turn this into actual money at some point because I sure as fuck ain't gonna be playing with them, Modern is garbage.
