its not just that, control is kept in the format because of combo. its something people seem to have forgotten. control is playable because the decks that dunk on control are supposed to be kept in check by fast combo decks that in turn fold to control. this makes all of the decks make concessions in deckbuilding to have game against the other archetypes and prevent degenerate strategies that push out the deck that they get beaten by.

with combo artifically kept out of modern and control kept from having counterspells and cantrips to find their important answers, modern can never have a healthy metagame

Friend just made the colorless eldrazi deck last night and challenged me to make a deck that could beat it saying its unbeatable. I built this and crushed him 5 games in a row. Of course this deck is god awful and will lose to most fair decks with little effort on their part. But hard countered the pro tour list pretty handily. Only when both are legal. If one were to be banned, temple would weaken eldrazi more. Temple enables turn 2 thought-knots and reality smashers. Its impossible to cast a turn 2 thought-knot and reality smasher with just ugin and ugin is a legendary card so you can't play more than one at once; making having multiple more of a liability. Plus you can't cast your disruption cards with an eye of ugin alone on turn 1.

Ah, but one Eye can let u plop down 1-4 Memdrazi Mimics on turn 1, one temple can only plop down 1 Mimic.
2 Eldrazi Temples on turn 2 can cast a thoughtknot seer, but an Eye of ugin and a temple can do the same. BUT an Eye of Ugin and and Eldrazi Temple can plop down 2 Matter Reshapers on turn 2, can 2 temples do that?
And lastly Eye gives u fuel in the late game.
Not to mention it doesn't even tap for its affect so it syncs well with Urborg, Tomb of Modern.
I'd say the eldrazi deck would still be strong with just Temples, but would be more balanced and sustain itself as a tier 1 deck, and not the over oppressive shit that it is currently.

Eye alone can't cast 2 matter reshapers turn 2 either and it has a harder time paying for other colorless mana costs than temple.

With just eye eldrazi would likely revert to a slower late game deck as opposed to a fast aggro one; which is good for the meta.

I feel like just finishing storm. I don't want to build a deck that's just going to hit a ban (Eldrazi, Affinity), Jund is too expensive, and I thought of control but its really not very viable. Thankfully Storm has been neutered hard and is thus off the list of potential bannings because the deck sucks now.

It along with ascendancy combo might get a lot better with the printing of madness in april.

I'm new to magic because all my co-workers play... I decided to go with a 1000x card bulk box from ebay and an elspeth vs kiora duel deck box. For 35 bux I can make, as I feel, a decent casual deck for just about any color.

But I dunno what to do now. How do I expand? Buying booster packs feels dumb, because they're supposedly designed for maximum draft enjoyment ie, you won't get many doubles of good cards even if you buy a lot of them? So if I like playing a certain way, the optimal way to expand my collection is to just buy singles...? Or is there something I should purchase right now that's worth it? Speculating about bans now is super premature. Nobody knows how the format will shape up on the next few weeks in Magic Online. It could very well be that the Eldrazi that took this PT by storm will end up not being the best deck after a while or that it's the new best deck but not broken enough to get banned. Remember that there was extremely limited time after the bans to test for this PT and none of the new decks have gone through the hivemind playtesting them thousands of times.

you either study the meta and buy the singles you want for your constructed deck or play draft/limited and get a new deck every time.

people who buy boosters only do so because they like cracking packs and gambling but its very likely they wont break even most of the time.

the best way to "expand" your collection is to go drafting, this way at least you will get a deck you can use later and not just jank you will never get to put on any deck.
