Why we can't get like 2-3 actually GOOD allies?
>>
>>44607142
The problem is not even that, it is just they don't even synergyze at all with the old allies.
>>
>>44607142

The REAL problem is that they print tribal shit at all. No more allies please. I've had enough boring cards for one set.

I for one love tribal shit. Ban bolt, ban path, ban urzatron, ban twin. Free SFM.

>>
>>44609107

But that's stupid, especially when only one color gets like 99% of the interaction with an entire chunk of the system. Is there any other effect in the entire game that is under a color monopoly? Hard and soft removal for a variety of permanents are in multiple colors, card draw, tutoring and deck manipulation are in multiple colors, buffs are everywhere, ramp and discounts are in multiple places, haste, graveyard interaction, tokens, counter manipulation, sacrifice for power... everything. And yet "deal with thing before it happens" is only blue... and apparently colorless, because red is allowed to get counterspells as long as they aren't actually colored red, I guess. There isn't even a flavor justification for it, blue is hardly the only color with wizards.
>>
>>44609070
It's not the first colourless counterspell. Rise of the Eldrazi had not of this world
>>
>>44609285
Discard is basically monoblack with like...maybe two or three bleeds.
>>
>>44609285
Red's answer to the counterspell is copy and change target effects. They... just don't get them all that often. And occasionally share them with blue anyway.
>>
>>44609285
You can always flicker the target, or give it shroud, or make it a non-valid target some other way. Even if you can't interact with the spell directly, you can react to it.
>>
These threads all make me want to kill myself. Magic suffers form the same shit that every "king of games" like LoL or DoTA suffers from, there are so many people playing that most of the time the shittiest and most vocal will rise to the top. It's not like set based mechanics have always shook up the game, there have been tons of random +1/+1 counter mechanics and surge is the first time we've seen multiple spells per turn shit since storm. Every one of these threads is full of people complaining about random commons and uncommons and random rares and mythics bc everyone needs their own special snowflake mtg set at all times. The designers have said theya re taking mtg in a new direction and they are just starting out, so look at everything as the first try at something new. ESPECIALLY this set.

>>
>>44608997
Alot of decks won't because of the Colorless mana requirement. But expect to see it in Affinity and Tron at least.
>>
>>44609386

This is true. I should probably bitch about that too. Who else should get hand disruption? White?

>>44609461

Not all spells target. Most don't, actually. That also means you're floating much narrower answers which is a good way to lose games.
>>
>>44607142

I can see the RWG Ally coming together a lot stronger in this set. Stone Haven Outfitter with Bone Saw and Stoneforge Masterwork will help a lot with momentum as you'll be able to throw cheaper Allies as fodder and maintain a card advantage while possibly building towards a huge creature.

Veteran Warleader wearing a Stoneforged Masterwork could quickly ramp into something spooky.
>>
>>44609612
Red should get temporary handfuckery - especially as riders on other spells.
"Deal blah damage to target player. That player exiles a card in his or her hand at random until the beginning of his or her next upkeep." or something. Or their entire hand, depending on the specific card

Void Shatter
1UU
Instant
Devoid (This card has no color.)

Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, exile it instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard.

To anyone that dislikes this card: It's designed as a UU instant counter to someone else's counter that prevents mirroring. In something that absolutely needs a particular card to resolve to go off this is gonna be nice. In standard I've got a deck that will absolutely take four.
Using it outright is a strictly worse Counterspell, we get it, but that's its secondary function. I can't believe we're getting real control game.

>>44610863

While you're right, enemy colors is a stupid, hamfisted way of doing it. Better is to give each color more subtle limitations so that they feel different in play.

I have a feeling they wanted to prove that two block sets could 'work'. typically the last block in a L/S/S set was the weakest, so having a good small set follow a strong weak set is a way of proving that this new system is an improvement.

Typeline decks have been used as bait for casual constructed for a long time now, turns out not everything is made for the highest level of play. It hasn't always been this way (Onslaught and Lorewyn come to mind) but it makes the casual gamer happy without making any autobuild decks for the pro tour.
>>
>>44610462

>It's designed as a UU instant counter to someone else's counter that prevents mirroring
But it doesn't do what you want it to.

For countering their spell its worse than cancel the majority of the time, for protecting your own spell from countermagic so you get the surge cost it fails since they laugh, let the counterspell fizzle then cast a new counterspell.

The can't be countered text will be irrelevant for a very large portion of the time and you will be better off with the dozens of cancel variations instead since they cost less mana

You know white is supposed to have all tax based counters right? All the "Counter unless opponent pays X."

Want to know why they dont? WotC admitted that they are all hacks who cant design shit and gave them back to blue. Their excuse was literally "After establishing the change we found it very difficult to make any blue counter spells."

Behold, the most boring card yet.
>>
>>44611304
It's not even that.
Maro doesn't want white to get counterspells because "counterspells aren't fun, so we don't want more colors to have them."
>>
>>44611304
It wasn't 'hard to make any blue counters' it was 'white was too good when they get counters'
That said, I think they should get more stuff like Judge's Familiar - taxing that's on-board. No surprises, so you know it's there and can thus be played around, but that throws you off and white is still doing stuff with the card itself (so there's a bit of push for if you WANT to use it to counter THAT or hold it for something ELSE when it might be too late, etc)
>>
>>44611376

>>
>>44611376

>>

>white was too good when they get counters

'Well maybe if they didn't strip 2 of whites biggest strengths because they were "unfun."

White needs its balance cards and its tax cards back. Right now all I can think of that white does is okay exile since they nerffed that too and token generation. Token generation being a green and a red thing too.

There is a reason White never dominates. Its because they striped away what it was and refuse to replace what they took.

>>44610863
I don't like how its going storywise. I thought it was premature when they managed to neutralize Ulamog at the end of BfZ, like it was too soon to put out a threat that had been hyped up so much. That is why I was happy when Kozilek showed up and it all went to shit.

But now, to have not one, but two titans be not restrained, but KILLED before they can even destroy a measly plane, they just aren't living up to the expectations we were made to have by WotC. I'll be really bummed if this is the last we see of Ula and, specially, Cosi.

There's also Crumbling Vestige, Unknown Shores, and Holdout Settlement at common which produce C. Plus I read somewhere that Wastes shows up twice or even three times as often as normal commons.

There's also Seer's Lantern but I would never recommend someone run that except maybe in super budget Commander
>>
Hey what do you think the next mechanics are gonna be for the coming sets? Given what we've seen in the past few I think these are pretty reasonable:

Foster X: Put X +1/+1 counter(s) on another target creature with the lowest converted mana cost you control.

Forcefeed X: Put a +1/+1 counter on X number of creatures you control with less than 2 power.

Steroid X: Put X +1/+1 counters on target creature you control with the highest power or tied for the highest power.

Lazy X: Put X +1/+1 counters on X creatures you control.

R&D can fuck off.

That can be a good thing though. If your opponent attacks and you Pongify it, he still has a 3/3 at the end of the day. If you Tusk it and kill it in combat, he's left with no creatures at all.

Similarly, it can be used on your own creatures in combat to increase P/T. Pongify would kill your own guy and remove it from combat

There are better countermagic which already don't see play due to rigid mana colors, why the fuck would you play this 4 mana garbage?

Like I can't even begin to think of your retarded reaosning in why someone would play that over Mana Drain which already minimal play in comparison to flusterstorm.
>>
>>44618517
Obviously you dont pay 4 you play a free spell and then play an uncounterable counterspell for UU
Flusterstorm isnt as good in slower control decks
It could at least be a sideboard card to deal with other control decks
>>
>>44618753
>slower control decks
Name one viable slow control deck in Vintage or Legacy. There are no slow control decks because the format is too fast.

Again name one common example of a matchup where this would be better than flusterstorm or mana drain in existing decks..
>>
>>44618829
Its better than mana drain because it wins counterwars, and you should have free spells to play in blue to make it cost UU
Flusterstorm is great at winning counterwars, but usually after youve used one too
Its best used in storm or delver when you are playing more spells than other control decks
A slow control deck in Vintage would be Oath
You get your combo and try to keep it with counterspells
It doesnt run any flusterstorm
>>
>>44610863
Much better than BFZ.
>>
>>44618969
Not him, but let me explain why this card isn't as good as people think. It's not bad, but it's definitely not GOOD, and there are many counters that are better. When it comes to eternal formats there are so many better options this isn't even worth considering.

It's a strictly better Last Word, but in practice it is pretty much the same.

Scenario 1:

>you cast spell that has to resolve
>they counter it
>you surge counter their counter
>they counter the original spell again

Its uncounterability does NOTHING when protecting another spell from a counter, which is one would believe is the biggest benefit of this mechanic.

Scenario 2:

>opponent casts a spell that has to be countered
>you don't have surge
>pay 2UU to counter it

Scenario 3 (Where it actually does what you want it to do)

>EOT
>opponent casts removal spell on the creature you cast this turn
>surge counter for UU
>they can't counter your counterspell

Although in most scenarios a normal counterspell would do the job just fine here too.

Scenario 4 (best case scenario?)
>opponent casts spell that has to be countered
>you cast bolt/path on their creature
>surge is activated and you counter their spell
>wish you had a cryptic instead
>>
>>44619135
and it's worth mentioning that in all the scenarios where you manage to activate surge, the uncounterability is only relevant if they have a counterspell in hand to stop you with, which isn't a given.
>>
>>44619135
Counterflux sees sideboard play.
>>
>>44618969
>Delver
>Running a card with the casting cost UU
You really don't know shit about eternal and are embarrassing yourself. Your mana is too stretched in 3 color delver, its gotten to the point where they rarely even run Clique any more due to its UU casting cost being too prohibitive.

The only delver deck still capable of casting things like that is American Delver which isn't going to run a 4 mana spell they can't cheat into play with SFM. Also what fucking free spells do you think you are casting on your opponents turn? Force and Daze? Theres no way they are playing a counterspell that requires you to cast another counterspell before hand.

It provides nothing better than Pierce/Daze/Force does, the sole reason why they even run those is because their casting cost is 0, sans pierce and sometimes snare which strictly better due to being one mana less and a million times easier to cast on the color requirements.

Uncounterable counterspells are also so rarely relevant outside of super fringe scenarios.

>>44619161
Not in a long ass time, REB and Pyroblast do its job better.
>>
>>44619161
Yes, because it shits on storm due to overload, a mechanic this card does not have.

Which is also a dead archetype in modern, so not anymore.
>>
>>44619135
I'm guessing is it's useful if both of you have multiple counters ready and your opponent's trying to bait you.
>cast lesser threat
>you countered
>they let it go because bait
>cast main threat with a counter ready
>you surge countered
making them waste both threats away.

>he designers have said theya re taking mtg in a new direction
No they haven't.
>>
>>44619182

That's...actually a pretty interesting trick. We'll see if it makes it into any sideboards.
>>
>>44611376
>this construct is unable to defeat the mighty squirrel
>>
>>44619247
You rarely have that much mana in Legacy due to 8 wastelands on the table. The only time where them casting spells for the combo that you are unsure of whether or not they are bair or not are decks like Storm where your counterspell isn't stopping their combo outside of past in flames.

So frequently they will try and bait out the force on the infernal tutor when they had the combo in hand and they needed cabal ritual to not get coutnered instead.

The issue is Storm does not run countermagic so the text "Cannot be countered" is worthless.

Sneak and Show and other combo decks where theres one single card they need to resolve and they try to resolve it by protecting it with Force and Pierce's of their own are the only times where something like this have merit over other countermagic but honestly that is a pretty fringe matchup and even still because they frequently run cards like ancient tomb its very possible they are jamming their combo long before you have the mana available to cast the expensive countermagic.

This one is actually in color for blue because it is temporary. Pongify/curse of swine/rapid hybridization where the ones that broke the color pie because they were hard removal.
>>
>>44614588
Blue does it all the time. Every color can turn other cards into itself, but Blue alone can turn cards into any color.
>>
>>44610930
Honestly, if you're talking about spell interactions, just attempting to shove counters into other colors is a hamfisted way of doing it. Conditional interactions that are closer to the colors strengths would be better. Quick example...
1WW - Instant - Target permanent or player gains hexproof until end of turn. Play this spell only if an opponent has a spell or ability on the stack.
2GG - Instant - Exile target noncreature spell. That spells controller puts a */* into play, where * is the spells CMC.
RR - Instant - Gain control of target noncreature spell. You may change the targets of that spell, but you may not choose the opponent who cast the spell, their spells, or their permanents.
3B - Instant - Target opponent discards a card. If they cannot, they must exile a spell they control.

These are just off the cuff, but I think they fit the colors better than simply "Counter target spell except X."
>>
>>44620927
>Pongify/curse of swine/rapid hybridization where the ones that broke the color pie
They didn't. It's still in color. The only problem with them was that it was that there's a bit of flavour disconnect when a creature that turned into a frog monster can be reanimated beside it despite them supposedly being the same creature. It is, regardless, completely within Blue's color slice to remove creatures from the game as long as it replaces them with something else.
>>
>>44620975

Honestly, I think there is plenty of room in White for 'Counter target spell that targets you or a permanent you control'.

Keep it protective, rather than 'No, you don't get that creature/buff' to keep it white.
>>
>>44620975
those are all terrible
>>
>>44621010
I believe that's already a part of White's color identity, along with taxing counterspells, however, that it gets them extremely infrequently and I can't think if any that have been printed since Mana Tithe. Maybe because while Maro has stated that it is something white can do there are still other members in R&D who aren't thrilled at the idea and remove the cards from the set files if they are ever put there to begin with.
>>
>>44621010
The white one is essentially that; reactive protection for you, your permanent, or potentially an ally. Without being a counter.

>>44621047
Mana Tithe really shouldn't be considered an example of white color identity.

>>44621015
That's nice.
>>
>>44621113
>The white one is essentially that; reactive protection for you, your permanent, or potentially an ally. Without being a counter.

Yes but it makes it a lot more fiddly and wordy for what is mostly the same effect.
>>
>>44621113
>Mana Tithe really shouldn't be considered an example of white color identity.
Normally I wouldn't, but I have a strong memory of reading in at least one of Maro's articles that Mana Tithe was one of the colorshifted cards that could actually be printed under normal circumstances and him talking about it in one of his podcasts.

Color pie violation.
>>
>>44621339
So? You were asking what other colors would get polymorphing and we gave you two good examples, one even with precedence and you shot them down
Oh yeah, and chaos warp's only a violation cause it hits enchants, everything else about it is fine
>>
>>44621365
>You were asking what other colors would get polymorphing
No, I never did such a thing.
>>
>>44620990
>completely within Blue's color slice to remove creatures from the game as long as it replaces them with something else.
I disagree. This is too far. Exile is way too good to be used liberally like this, and some chump token is hardly a drawback.
>>
>>44607006
okay, wtf, is pre-release going to require teams or somethign?
>>
>>44621426
I heard they are trying to push 2HG with OGW
>>
>>44621157

>accepting who you were born to be
>the color of +1/+1 counter spam

Yeah, no. That is a green trait but it isn't the only one, becoming increasingly stronger is definitely a green hobby.
>>
>>44621425

It shouldn't be, but it is. Go ask Maro, blue basically gets to do whatever the fuck it wants because breaking the pie is in blue's slice of the pie.
>>
>>44621478
>becoming increasingly stronger
Growing older and bigger and is a very natural thing. Green is all about accepting that as well.

>Green is the color of accepting what you were born to be.
No giant growths for you then. Green the colour of growth (mana, card draw) and creatures. Green prefers instinctive growth rather than studying to grow better.
Why shouldn't the color of creatures be allowed to change creatures?
>>
>>44621636
Lignify is also a color break.
>>
>>44621503

>gatherer
>put a +1/1 counter on target creature
>green
>not creature
>battlegrowth is second result

Still no, there are many, many examples of green actively enhancing itself that cannot be argued as simply "growing older" (which by the way doesn't usually make you stronger, given that most characters on cards are shown being already in their physical prime).
>>
>>44621670
But Anon, Gift of the Husk isnt enhancing, its transforming something entirely.

White has answers to everything? Does it counterspells or discards hand or has land destruction?
>>
>>44621670
You should totally ask Maro about all of this.
>>
>>44621685
>Does it counterspells
Supposedly it does, but Wizards never prints any.

>land destruction
No, lands are the only type of permanent that White can't handle.
>>
>>44621426
>you or a teammate
I know, I fell for it too.
>>
>>44621691

>this is how things should be
>nuh uh, go ask Maro if that's how they are

Is the magic community illiterate or does this thread just have a higher than normal concentration of the slow ones?
>>
>>44621691
>>44621739

Which isn't even a defense, by the way. If I asked him if green wanted to stay how it was born or if it was allowed to change things he'd point me to Simic and send me back here to call you an idiot again.
>>
>>44621739
no, its just you not understanding that green doesnt transform. yes, you are correct, it grows. But it not fucking transforms, thats blues territory. Lignify is a color pie violation, its one of the only cards that does this in green, that happens from time to time, just like snappy isnt blue.
>>
>>44621752

>growing thornblades out of your arm isn't a transformation
>>
>>44621776
Which card do you mean?
>>
>>44621800

Battlegrowth. Or look at Renegade Krasis and Battering Krasis, two monogreen creatures that are very explicitly the result of heavy biological tampering. Or Essence of the Wild, a green creature that transforms your other creatures into it. There are many, many others, you have to ignore a ridiculous amount of evidence that you're wrong to make this position even slightly feasible.
>>
>>44621685
Mana tithe and Armageddon
>>
>>44621846

Moonmist literally reads "transform all humans." Sorry, I'm having a lot of fun looking through green cards and seeing just how absurdly wrong you are. Like where did you even get this idea?

>inb4 lycanthropy curses are a natural part of growing up
>>
>>44621846
Okey, im sorry. Let me rephrase it for complete retards:
Growing and slowly evolve (or transform, yes growth can be transformation in semantics like you actually realized) is green. So yeah, your green frog who is now a big green frog with tentacles technicly transformed. Yet it is still growth, so green.
Complete TEMPONARY transformation is blue. As in, Oops this frog is now a big ass elephant, or oops your warleader is now an ape.
You'll never have a green card that does that.
>>
>>44621900

Literally every single werewolf is that though. Also, no, a frog gaining tentacles is not merely "growth" under any traditional definition. Are you native speaker?
>>
>>44621739
I was never talking about how things should be. That's not interesting unless you do it with people who have a firm grip on how things already are.
>>
>>44622053

>I was never interested in joining your conversation, I just wanted to yell about things

Ok, great dialogue.
>>
>>44622065
This whole thing started because I explained why polymorph is blue. I don't know why people feel so inclined to prove that it should be green.
>>
>>44621137
>>44621157
>>44621478
>>44622096

That's the part of the conversation tree I've been working with, if you didn't want any part in that tangent then you probably shouldn't have gotten involved. That's how conversations work, they ebb and flow in subject based on the interests of the participants.
>>
>>44622156

Also if you're >>44621900 that's a pretty weak dodge.
>>
>>44622164
hes not
>>
>>44622175

I'm not sure how that proves anything but I also don't care since it's all anonymous, just letting themyou know that if theyyou were one being that being should feel great shame.
>>
>>44622226
Im the different anon who argued that growth -> instant change. I just feel that werewolves are different than a frog-spell. Both can be described as an instant, sudden and temponary transformation, yet I feel its different, dunno how to explain that
>>
>>44622253

I don't see how it's different.

>human turns into werewolf, then turns back into human
>human turns into elephant, then turns back into human

The only thing that seems different is the cause, in one instance it's a curse and in another it's a dickbag mage. Flavor isn't mechanics though and there's no thematic reason that a dickbag shaman couldn't turn you into an elephant as well.
>>
>>44622164
>>44622226
Their writing styles are completely different. People don't easily switch over like that, so them being two different people seems obvious.
>>
>>44622286
this is the problem I have. Its technicly the same, yet I feel these are two different things, and not only flavorwise. But youre probably right meh.

>>44622362
If im ever samefagging that hard im probably ready to kill myself
>>
>>44622383
I know what you feel, I guess it is because the werewolf transformation is much more primal and ferocious, while the frog transformation is much more wizardry polymorphism.
>>
>>44622422
It's also because being a werewolf is part of the creature's identity. Tranforming feels much more natural for them because that is what they do. Turning your opponents dragon or your own badger into an elephant or ape does not have the same feeling of being something natural.

Someone make a new thread, we got spoilers coming down the pipes soon

I was thinking:

this is everything that is wrong with magic and this fucking excuse of a set

SoI better bring some format breaking shit and not just lottery value
