Say I want to get into boxing and boxing history but I have no knowledge of the sport except for the big names. Where can I reliably start watching historical matches? I can watch boxing for hours on end and that's what i've been doing for weeks now. For example, I just watched Foreman vs Moorer and Hearns vs Hagler. Weight division doesn't really matter, I just want some fights to get me started so I can learn different styles of fighting and get familiarized with the sport better. You know, like seeing the past greats in counterpunching, defensive fighting and powerpunching. I'm also keeping up with the current big names like Lomachenko, GGG, Crawford and etc and i'm in these threads constantly so i'd preferably like matches from the past Eras. If anybody can help get a newbie along I'd appreciate it, I really love this sport.

A smart trainer will monitor a fighters hard sparring closely during camp. If your fighter looks keen and sharp it's better to call it a day after a few rounds than to let him burn himself out doing 15+ rounds for no reason.

Hi /box. Been lurking for a year and rarely post but my first amateur boxing match is coming up and I've been doing HIIT 2x a day (3x3min sprints) and some weightlifting. I feel confident in my spars and I don't gas out. I'm facing a taller guy and we're fighting at 155lbs. I'm a southpaw. I'm fairly inexperienced so all I've been thinking about going for is jab, land lead foot on the outside and straight left. When close, hooks to the body with a weave left and right. Any tips?
>>
>>78109489
Go for the body

In fighter relax
>>
>>78109212
Does he still train Povetkin? I thought he was being trained by Kostya Tszyu
>>
>>78109489
don't plan that specifically
just concentate in the moment, focus on your opponent. keep balanced and pick your shots when they feel right and natural
>>
Anyone watch De La Hoya's Breakfast Club interview? Charlemagne asked him about the cross dressing loo
>>
>>78109489

hard to say without knowing the opponent. Height is one factor, but temperament is more important. rather than only focus on your punches, try to gauge his temperament and approach. if he's aggressive, maybe counter. if he's weak, take the center of the ring and apply your own pressure and see how he reacts. some guys can only go one way and if you force them off that, they fall apart. Build on what you learn about him in the first round and adjust accordingly.
>>
>>78109489
You're probably going to work hard to get inside his jab but you thankfully will be getting hit with a lot less right hands.
>>
>>78109606
It's so hard being new in the sport thinking body actually do shit but it seems legit. I'm just afraid that the hooks will take a lot of energy and it will gas me out throwing those more than it will gas him out when they land
>>78109677

Thank you all for taking your time for helping out.
Is the whole hand trap a la lomachenko too crazy to play around with? The whole lead hand pulling thing... I've been playing with it in sparring, especially when someone paws or reaches out with the lead hand... maybe dumb to think off since it will be hard to do when I'm actually in there..

>>
>>78109993
HIIT can subsitute the long distance pretty effectively if you do it right and literally kill yourself when you're doing it
>>
>>78110051

That's the thing most people, myself included, don't have the self discipline to maintain the proper intensity to make it as effective as it should be.
>>
>>78110051
I don't let any day go by without me tasting blood after a HIIT and reaching that feel when you can't take a deep breath after the HIIT session.
>>
>>78109744
Hooks to the body won't make much difference in a three round amateur match. Just stay relaxed and play off your jab as much as possible. If he's taller then stick to him like glue. That will nullify power too.

you don't need to run that much unless you're trying to drop a shitload of weight. Your heart rate adjusts pretty quickly and it ends up being a waste of time. A strong 2/3 mile run is more than enough. Plus running that much tears the shit out of your knees and hips.

furthermore "cardio" is one thing, but if you're not comfortable in the ring and know how to breathe, you could be the most ripped guy in the ring and you'll still gas out after a few rounds.

Haha, oh man, as it gets closer to the big date I can see the doubt in Golovkin's followers. It feels so good to watch them increasingly backpedal on their cocky statements, dialing back on their arrogance.
They may not know what's coming, but they feel it in their bones. That's exactly the reaction I love to see from them.

September 16th is going to be a great day.

Alright so I know nothing about boxing, but the videos of Golovkin's chin are freaking me out. Like, is he actually letting guys hit him to ramp up excitement/draw them out to counter punch, or is he just saying that? I'm sure he isn't letting guys throw anything they want at him but maybe some punches that he's comfortable taking?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeQ_shusMZM

>>78116720

So he's going to let Canelo come at him, as opposed to going after Canelo and letting him counter punch? Isn't GGG's greatest strength (besides his power) the constant pressure he puts on guys?

Isn't there the one knockout where he gets ROCKED by a right and just blindly throws a counter and knocks the guy out? Think it was some UK guy.

Rigo never turned the fight down.

Lomachenko's manager started the talks by bringing up Rigo. Rigo's team presents a catchweight of 124 with a rehydration clause of 135 lbs (Remember this is when Loma was still at 126).
Loma's manager outright rejects 124, so Rigo's team accepts 126 but still with the rehydration clause.
Lomachenko himself rejects the 126 rehydration clause.

Then earlier this year Rigo calls him out and accepts the fight at 130lbs.

some people believe he ducked Andre Ward, even though they only accepted the fight after he agreed to box Lemieux.

Also, he kind of has the Klitschko problem where he dominated everyone in the division so it makes the division look less impressive. People assume he has weak opposition, however I believe GGG is just that good.

I don't think he's saying he let Jacobs stay up, just that if he had gone through him Canelo would have kept ducking him.

He definitely didn't try 100% in the Brook and Monroe fights though, because they couldn't hurt him

If I'm GGG and I just destroyed Canelo, I'd make Ward fight at 166 or 165. Ward used to fight at 168 all the time. Won't make a huge difference, but that way, both fighters are at a weight they haven't fought at before and both are a little uncomfortable. Seems fair and if GGG wins big, he'll be the bigger draw, he should have the bargaining power to make that happen.
>>
>>78123077
Oh yeah fair enough. Yeah it makes sense to push Joe Joyce quicker because he is over thirty. I think Dubois should stick to fighting journeymen for now. He didn't really have an amateur career so he needs as much ring time as possible. Would like to see him get some rounds against durable journeymen.
>>

a lot of people are predicting this outcome

ggg has the height and reach, why wouldn't he use it?

I would be betting the house on golovkin to win on points but the momentum is all canelo and canelo tends to win bad decisions
>>
>>78123362
If GGG can land his jab frequently he's gonna go for the KO/TKO in the later rounds when Canelo is tired and wobbly after getting hit by his jab for the 250th time.
>>
>>78123251
Well he's not getting a GGG fight at anything above 168. GGG would be stupid to fight him at 175.
>>
>>78123402
there's no way he lands the jab on canelo even nearly as much as he did on lemieux though, slickster vs stiff idiot
>>
>>78123362
How does Canelo have momentum? He went 12 rounds with Chavez Jr. Golovkin has a good chance of stopping him late like he did to Lemieux
>>
>>78123441
That's the question isn't it. How slick will Canelo be after 6-7 rounds of constant pressure from GGG.
>>
>>78123427
>GGG would be stupid to fight him at 175.
He'd be stupid to fight him period. Ward would out point him. Ward will demand a crazy payday anyway. At this point he's just fighting for the money, he already proved himself in 2 divisions and is looking for cruiserweight/hw money now in Tony Bellew or undisputed status with Stevenson
>>
>>78123449
golovkin looks like hes on a decline, what age is he now 36/37? didn't look great in his last two fights, the jacobs fight was very competitive and golovkin usually excels in fighting backfoot movers

>>78123500
yeah exactly, I think the strategy for canelo is to heavily invest in body shots for the first few rounds but it is hard to picture him being effective against that range
>>
>>78123441
nah bro. jabs will be the end of canelo.
>>

>>
>>78123604

>>
>>78123427
I think he's already said he wants to knock down Hopkins's record for title defenses. He needs three more, including Canelo. I don't know if he wants to keep fighting long enough, but Joe Louis's record for defenses in any division is eight wins away. With the depth at middle right now it would seem to be within reach
>>
>>78123617
i hear canelo can gain a shitload of weight fairly quickly, so i wouldn't be surprised if he tried that out. jacobs very nearly beat ggg in that fight, i feel it was quite close. i still think canelo is toomwild and his flurries are going to be all too clear to ggg, and he'll just jab him into steak for after dinner meal.
i think the only chance canelo has is body body body.

just trying to give credit where credit's due.
>>
>>78123705

"war" lol. Jacobs took no risks at all. Hard to ko a guy who specifically comes to survive. Still won it clearly enough, everyone just used to the knockouts every time out.

look at jacobs reaction after the final bell, he looked so relieved, like it was a miracle to him to even survive lol
>>
>>78122719
>>78123254

Im thinking more about the Brook fight and Jacobs fight. He just got caught in those fights.

>>78122866

Agreed, Canelo can drop smaller guys, but I am curious how his power is at middle weight. He couldn't get JCC jr out of there and didnt really seem to hurt Cotto either. Both of those guys are tough as hell tho.
>>
>>78123757
i guess i just saw it differently, i'm quite new to boxing, i started watching old fights, some of the greats and classics, and definitely instantly became a ggg fan, some sort of respect he has for boxing that just flows through, a genuine respect, and not that strange cultural boxing respect, but a personal devotion.
i'm perfectly willing to concede to your points about the fight, i'm happy to learn more about some of the finer points in a fight.

Am I retarded for thinking GGG vs. Canelo is 50/50?

>Trout and Lara landed more punches on Canelo than he did on them
>Chavez Jr. and Cotto lasted 12 rounds against Canelo, they would've have lasted 10 against GGG
>Cotto only landed 10 punches less than Canelo did on him

>Jacobs had a 90% KO rate and didn't hurt GGG too bad even though Jacobs was taller, rangier, and weighed 5-10 pounds more on fight night
>Brook, who had more punching power than Canelo, according to Matt Hatton, couldn't back GGG off

With all these facts, somehow I still think this fight is 50/50 and am reluctant to bet more on GGG winning.

I might be retarded.

>using triggered wrong
>>
>>78125768
It depends entirely on how the two fighters approach it on fight night. A GGG win is guaranteed if he successfully turns it into a brawl and they trade, but Canelo is smarter than that. Canelo will try to turn it into a boxing match, and the degree of his success depends on how well he manages GGG's pressure and power. Jacobs had some of his best moments in the center of the ring, so if Canelo can perform similarly and bring a better defense then he might look better on points. GGG is a great boxer too though so that's what makes everything uncertain, especially because GGG'S jabs always snap the head back. All Canelo can really do against someone like GGG who wins trades and boxes competitively with a hard jab is to bring a better defense and pick his combinations wisely for points.

The thing about GGG is that he does move his head, but it's very subtle and never against opponents he doesn't respect.
