i think the answer is it's just really fucking hard to win anything of note.

only 1 team out of 128 wins a championship, and only 1 out of 10-14 (depending on conf) wins a conference championship. it's just really hard.

all things being equal, a team should only win their conference once a decade or less. obviously things aren't equal. Cal is right about in the middle of the Pac12 when it comes to talent, though, so i'd expect them to win the conference once a decade or less. not sure when their last one was, though.

Given recent history in the conference, USC, Oregon and Stanford should be winning the conference most years (currently), while ucla/uw/cal/asu/arizona/utah should split the remaining few years, and oregon st/colorado/wsu should only win on extreme flukes. things could always change, but having "good" talent still makes you a long shot to win a conference.

now take all that and make it roughly twice as hard to win a new years bowl game and 8-10 times harder to win a national championship.

oregon had an incredible run on talent and a great coach in kelly, but only won the conf once or twice, the rose bowl once i think and no national championships.

stanford same thing

usc had a talent/coaching run for the ages (once in a generation -- same with bama currently) and had only two national championships (albeit a shitload of conf champs and rose bowl wins)

Win streaks don't really mean shit. They're a fun stat but they don't really matter on a week-to-week basis. I would agree that WMU is a criminally underrated and solid team. They're better than almost anyone else we'll play all season with the exception of Stanford, UCLA and (maybe) ND.

Still, we don't deserve a #2 spot. Not yet at least. I think we're around the #10 or #11 spot right now. It's tough to gauge how good teams like Penn State (who we barely beat last year), Wiscy, and OkieSt. really are considering the competition they played last week (it was all garbage). I understand why you wouldn't want to take a risk on an unproven HC. We did it with Pelini and it didn't turn out so well. Pelini was a victim of his own device. He could have really been a great HC at NU but was too concerned with keeping his friends and family on the pay roll than actually winning games. He never bothered to go after a proven and effective DC, instead hiring his brother and then just promoting the next guy in line after his brother left. Same thing with the OC. Based on this past weekends performance? Yes. But we still have a lot of football to play. Darnold did not look good last week, but he was playing a much better defense as well.

I was born and raised in SoCal and have followed local HS football religiously so I saw both Darnold and Rosen play prior to college. Rosen has the better upside and he was a serious threat in HS, but Darnold, I think has the capability to be a better game manager.
