Hello friends. I know you like to make lots of dank may mays about Bryce Harper, but I think we all know that he's the GOAT. Don't you think the Nationals should just trade him to the Yankees alreadt? It's much better than letting him toil away in a city I don't care about. Plus it would be best for his career and Bryce Harper's career is clearly more important than anything else. Besides, he'd look good in a Yankee uniform. Please start a letter-writing campaign to the Nationals asking for this trade.
I'm not Bryce Harper btw.

Ruth probably couldn't hang, he was before the advent of the power slider.
Fun fact: You can find when the power slider bloomed in the majors by looking at the last batting champ to hit over .400.
Fun fact 2: Tony Gwynn had a chance to hit over .400 one season, but the season ended early due to strike.
Fun Fact 3: Tony Gwynn is the best hitter in the last 50 years who didn't roid.
>I heard you needed some insurance, sir?

I'm sure if Ruth were raised in a time of million dollar training facilities, modern sports medicine, modern training techniques, less travel time, more realistic working schedule, and was groomed to play baseball his entire life like literally every single modern baseball player, he'd be fine among modern players.
ignoring Ruth's talent doesn't mean it wasn't there.

But to be fair, Tony played 20 years and only hit under .300 once, his rookie year (he hit .289). I could see arguments statistically for ichiro or pete, but Gwynn is the best batter I've ever seen play, especially in terms of technique and approach.
Ichiro and Rose are great, both should be hofers. Would Gwynn be the goat if he hit .400 in a complete 1994 season?

I feel like Gwynn is similar to Griffey in one respect, that if both stayed healthy, they could have done so much more. The .400 average season would be a great footnote in history, but that alone would not change his production. You can have all the right tools mechanically, but if you can't produce, it only hurts you in the end. from his 30 year old season to his 41 year old season, he averaged only 115 games a season. if you take out his last two outlier seasons, the average is still only 127 games a season. Gwynn missed too much time. He was still an amazing talent and a generational hitter, but Rose and Ichiro have him beat based on pure stats alone. Rose had 8 seasons where he played 162 games, including a season where he was 41 years old.
I agree with you that Gwynn had, perhaps, the best approach of all time. but he just doesn't have enough production to be called the best.

Try all the time. It was the negro league's main source of income. Their owners were particularly adamant about making it happen as much as possible. The only reason people came was to see the stars from MLB olay, not the negro league players.
And you faggots have this really flawed idea that MLB players would have a harder time adjusting to black players integrating than vice versa. In reality, the negro league was a far inferior league talent wise since they were drawing from a much smaller talent pool. The star players of the negro leagues benefitted from less talent in their league. This is not to say they wouldn't have been good in the MLB, but they definitely would've had a harder time adjusting to the talent than the white players. To act like HoFers pre-integration don't have valid numbers just because they didn't play integrated is retarded. Especially when the amount of teams in the league was representative of the talent pool they were drawing from.

Do people itt seriously not realize that baseball has increasingly become more offensive friendly as the years have gone on, and that styles of play of changed throughout history? It's hard to compare stats because of this, but it doesn't mean that someone's stats are invalidated just because they played in a certain time period. Modern day players have the benefit of playing night games with high powered lights, modern sports medicine, quick travel, modern training facilities, a mound moved further back, fences moved further in, balls that get rotated out within an 8 pitch lifespan, supplements, PEDs (inb4 muh monkey testosterone. It didn't work, and made player sick), and so on.
In the early 20s the pitching mound was much closer in, a lot of illegal pitches hadn't been outlawed yet, the fences were significantly further back, balls were used until their very last stitch (which meant that lopsided balls were commonly used in play), no modern lights so games after a certain time had to be called if players couldn't see pitches anymore, and so on.

>On November 20, 1934, the 17-year-old Sawamura faced a team of visiting all-star players from Major League Baseball. Entering the game in the fourth inning, the high school pitcher struck out nine batters and held the Americans to a single run over five innings pitched. However, he did manage to strike out Gehringer, Ruth, Gehrig, and Foxx in succession. Connie Mack, who was managing the American team, was so impressed by Sawamura's performance that he tried to sign him to a Major League contract. However, anti-American sentiment was strong in Japan at the time, and Sawamura declined, saying, "My problem is I hate America, and I can't make myself like Americans."

20's pitchers pitched with heavier balls (which caused the lower velocity, and it was 65 mph like you retards try to push) and relied on getting hitters to ground out rather than striking them out. It was a completely different style of play. Once the long ball became popular in the late 20's, and strikeouts were less looked down on, the pitching style changed. Pitchers who played with this old style of play and who were able to adjust stayed in the league. Those who couldn't adjust were forced to leave. The same shit happens today.

Not really, a 29 year old hitting at that level in single A is to be expected, however he's gone from "no chance to make the majors" to "reasonable chance to make the majors before the end of next year" in a really short amount of time.

That's really why this trade deadline is so key. Once we trade away Duda/Cabrera and call up Smith/Rosario, our farm will be bottom 5 unless the return for them and Reed, Bruce/Grandy etc. is very good. If we play things right here we can reload for 2018 and beyond, but if we fuck up our future is very limited.
>>77230748

Yeah our farm system is pretty weak, flexen is very underrated though. He was a bit of a slow starter but he's eating up AA, 1.66 ERA, 2.71 FIP, 2.45 xFIP in 48 innings.
But if we're gonna have a serious shot at playoffs next two years we're gonna have to spend some money.

Unless they manage to get a decent or better return on *all* those guys you listed, this team isn't going anywhere. Cespedes should've just been left as a rental. 27.5mil/year to shirk off flyballs and golf. Ridiculous. Smith looks like another AAAA player to me. Just so out of shape and he's only a kid. Not a professional. Rosario is nice, but this team is realistically at least several pieces away from contention.

My ideal deadline is probably maximizing Reed's value, getting some Yankees prospects for Duda, unloading Grandy and Cabrera for some low level prospects, and either getting a ton for Bruce or keeping him for next year.
If we either keep all the outfielders or trade deGrom for anything less than Houston's entire farm system, Sandy needs to be fired. We're on a pretty narrow margin for error in 2018 even assuming injuries aren't brutal again.

>the Wilpons don't seem likely to spend that much
Honestly they might, after bruce, grandy, cabrera, walker contracts are all off the table, their only serious commitments next season are ces and wright, the latter of which is getting insurance collected on it. If sandy thinks it's a good idea he might be able to convince the wilpons to splurge on otani. Otherwise we'll probably pick up a bunch of medium sized contracts over the next two seasons.

I unironically think you don't know shit about baseball. His hitting wouldn't translate to the major league level. The kid is good and but he would be a 12HR - 45RBI - 245 AVERAGE hitter of he played 150 games in LF. He's not that good. His value is in his arm. And even thar value is overrated becuase of muh fastball. The kid is good, not question but he's injury prone this young in age and not even as good as Darvish and Tanaka when they were 23. He's not polished. Doesn't have breaking stuff that Darvish has or an offspeed like Iwakuma with the split.

foreign players are weird about their preferences, man. he may want to be the big fish in a small pond, you never know
>>77231158
>Catcher
That's a great idea if they want to shorten his career.
>>77231189
>David Wright will never retire to coach the Mets
feels bad
I just feel like we have too many other holes that need to be addressed in FA, you know? 3B is a black hole this year, and so is catcher.
>>77231212
I guess we'll see. A deGrom-Thor-Otani top of the rotation is some 2015 kind of shit.
>Noah Synderpiss
Now that's a throwback meme
>>77230912
>Smith looks like another AAAA player to me
You have no idea what you are talking about. Smith as a rookie will be the best defensive 1B the mets have ever had since Keith "fundies" Hernandez. Plus he has a great eye at the plate and just starting to hit with power.
>>77231262
Yeah he's raking now. I don't know why someone would call him a AAAA player.
The more interesting question is whether Alonso develops into a better power option at 1B.
>>77231234
> Wright will never retire to coach
i could see him doing a stint as 1BC for a couple of years before taking on some ten-year slog with a mid-market underperformer
Sell Sell Sell get that farm back and go back to winning division and world series appearances by 2019

Mad that this is now a New York Mets general?

I forgot that Gold and Platinum gloves were awarded for October play. And that a regular season .301/.358/.435 is October
>Lifelong Mest fans conveniently show back up right when lifelong Yak fans disappear

>>77231412
Aaron who, am I right? You've always been a fan of the Mets with Kevin Hernandez, Dale Wright, and Carl Delgado!
>>77231362
Andrelton Simmons is a better defender.
>>77231421
trying a little too hard
Imagine being a fan of a team that has ever relocated

'no'

There are options for 3B over the next few years, depending on how much they want to spend. Frazier, Moustakas, Machado, Donaldson, Murphy, arenado (no way sandy would sign him), Rendon. But we'll definitely need to sign at least one IF this offseason, if not two. Moustakas and Walker wouldn't be a bad idea I think.
Catcher is far from a black hole, d'arnaud is still a talented player. He's improved defensively and offensively this year relative to last year, although his hitting is nowhere near what it was in 2015.
Another outfielder isn't strictly necessary but would be a bonus. If there was any way we could land pry Yelich from Loria's hands that would be perfect.
>>77231495
2010, but my point still stands.
>>77231446
You've honestly never been to NY if you think there are mets fans who are yankees fans when the mets are bad.
There are yankees fans who cheer for the mets when the yankees are off, but there are exactly zero people who do the reverse.
>>77231525
haha too true, right? I bet you were a huge fan of Barney Wagner!
>>77231421
this is embarrassing
>>77227271
Its not worth it to go after DeGrom, the Mets will demand autistic deals for him or hey may be untouchable based off the past 2 series. Unless they totally drop the ball on the next two (which is hard because both teams are somehow actually worse than them)
