I want to take up some form of grappling but can't stand BJJ and the culture that surrounds it.

I've been obsessed with Catch wrestling for a while: the excitement, the brutality, the aggressiveness, the what the fuckness of some of the moves. Unfortunately nowhere really exists that teaches it in the UK and it's a dying art.

So what current grappling art is most similar? 10th Planet despite being BJJ based? Freestyle Wrestling? Sambo? What grappling is there that isn't just lying on your back and calling everyone 'bro'?

I felt the same. The only luck I had was judo because there were no classes for any of the other styles. The classes will be 80% throws and 20% groundwork though.

I'm also lucky that my sensei is from a family of catch wrestlers too so he probably mixes in a lot of wrestling techniques. (for example he shown us how to escape a sitting rear-naked choke and sweep them into a figure-four wristlock which is a Kimura obviously)

There is a freestyle wrestling club near by run by some Russians but according to the yanks on here freestyle doesn't have any submissions so fuck that what's the point in just learning to pin someone on their back.

Another important note is that a judo club which teaches judo and a judo club which is focused on competition are very different. A lot of the original techniques of judo (leg grabs, groundwork etc which makes judo very similar to wrestling in its pure form) have been banned from competition judo so if you join a competition focused club they may not teach you those techniques or neglect them because they are no use in competitions. I'm lucky to have a real judo club which teaches you 'banned' techniques.

Thanks for your input, it was really interesting as I've never thought of Judo in regards to this.

A gym near me (London Shootfighters) has a class that's just vaguely called 'Submission Wrestling', so I might give that a shot since I think they offer free first time lessons.

Trouble is with a lot of these places they cater to casual UFC fans who want to 'roll' after work, which is a vibe I'm not really into.

How crazy is that Brendan Schaub was on JRE a couple months ago telling Joe Rogan "For Mayweather-Mcgregor, I want my buddy Joe Rogan to be working for this landmark event to break down the fight." Joe actually replied that he'd like that... but didn't fancy his chances since it's a boxing bout and there's enough big players in that game as it is.

Fast-forward to now, and Mr. Big Brown himself is the official analyst hired by Showtime to cover this seminal event!! What's interesting is how it didn't even occur to Schaub that he's a big enough name now in the fight game to cover this once-in-a-lifetime matchup. He thought he had no chance and he was hoping his mentor, Joe Rogan would be an obvious choice as the MMA pundit.

Well, like it or not Brendan Schaub is quickly climbing the ranks and is clearly a very good businessman to make it to where he is. In all fairness, he is nowhere near Joe Rogan but he'll get there. A hard-working man always does.
