As an American I didn't learn much about the Portuguese empire in public school other than a few basics. Once I got to college though I started picking up on how awesome the Portuguese empire was and then continued reading up on it from there.

I've always wondered how far the Empire would have gotten if it weren't for the fact that the crown got inherited by Spain for a brief period leading to them getting jumped by all the Protestant powers.
