Look at the war in three stages

Boers outnumbered and outgunned the brits by a long way at first, though they had few regular units they had many well trained and organised militias that enjoyed state provided small arms. Full-time force was mostly artillery. Boers mobilised very quickly in Stage 1, besiege Ladysmith, Mafeking and Kimberley and made gainz all round (though the sieges were a mistake), Brits tried to relieve them and got their shit pushed in hard. This culminated in "Black Week" (I personally believe the battle of Colenso was one of the worst defeat the brits ever suffered).

Second stage the Brits pumped in more men and firepower in and began to drain the boers. The war started becoming more mobile as the boers could do little to stop the British advance.

Stage 3 was guerilla warfare and scorched earth
