And what I was gonna ask here.
So I got a konica pop, turned out to be fun to shot with, I expected it to have light leaks but wanted to check what was needed.
This kind of leak is common from where the film spools in, right? where the door hinge is.

Tried two new (to me) methods to scan with the dslr.
Here I put a plastic foil as a diffuse foil (just a translucent plastic from a soft folder) over my smartphone, then grabbed two rolls of tape, put one over the phone, then placed the film and had it stay flat and in place by putting the other roll on top of it, with paper in between film and tape rolls so that it doesn't leave shit on it.
Anyway, it's nice that it leaves the whole film area exposed and there's no pickles and no plastic or paper "noise" showing.
It doesn't for those frames at the edges of the strips though, sucks.
Had a hard time focusing too, got it wrong in the end and gave up.

Directly over the foil is as usual the easiest and fastest.
That said, this plastic wasn't as nice, you can see it as "noise" on the film.

So what's the deal with rangefinders?
>>3055083
they are best waifus.
>>3055086
how about medium format range finders?
Hey /p/. I recently took an interest in photography after shooting with my parent's camera during summer vacation (I'm still in high school). I recently bought an Olympus Trip 35 because I like film photography and want to start from basics.
What are your shooting tips? It's a pretty simple camera, so I was thinking of bringing with me wherever I go to snap cool shots as I see them. I was planning on making a little "High School" series of photographs sort of chronicling the experience before I graduate.
Also, I shot a few rolls, and although some were good, a lot of pictures were blurry, even though I checked the focus ring. Any suggestions for that?
Anyways, thanks for the help, any input is greatly appreciated?
whats the point of c-41 b&w?
>>3055090
You can get it developed everywhere and for cheap since c41 became sort of the standard, the labs will already have a machine that does c41 automatically, from walmart to the old guy in town with a lab.
If I ask my lab to dev c41 I can have it fast (next day, remember when it only took like an hour back in the day?) and with consistent results.
If for some reason I can't develop normal b&w myself, the guy at the lab will do it, but by hand too, but he's busy and will do batches of b&w if possible. So it takes longer, depends on his method, etc.
>>3055095
ok, I suppose that is a good enough reason. Does your walmart do C-41? I went to walgreens because I thought they still did it but they told me they ship it out.
after checking some of these dev prices (6.50) plus pic related i'm thinking of getting my own chems and scanner
Can anyone recommend me some good gear to get into medium format?
Budget is around $500 AUD for a camera.
>>3055099
TLR, rangefinder?
Automatic/manual?
Fixed lens or are interchangeable lenses a must?
/p/ n00b,
whats the best value point and shoot 35mm film camera?
I just want something for my summer vacation to italy (so hopefully something that will do well outdoors in broad daylight) and that will hopefully get me into film.
Otherwise, would it be better to just spend the money and go for a SLR film camera with interchangeable lenses?
>>3055101
how much are you willing to spend?
>>3055103
up to $100. I'm hoping that's reasonable for an entry level camera.
>>3055101

>>3055087
You dont want these. Depth of field is really an issue on MF and needs to be properly controlled
>>3055101

>>3055101
There are so many top 10 35mm point and shoot lists on the internet. Go read a few and pick one that sounds nice. I'd I were you, I'd bump my budget a bit and get a mju ii. It's a camera you'd keep around even if you later get an SLR.
>>3055113
Wtf are you even talking about? How does an SLR control DOF better than a rangefinder? Lrn2hyperfocal...which is what you should be doing even on an SLR.
Hey, recently got a Canon F-1 New from ebay, for pretty cheap, and after cleaning it's looking pretty good.
My only problem is that it has the data back for the door cover, and I hate how bulky it is.
Does anyone know anywhere to buy old spare parts for cameras online (that hopefully isn't Ebay)?
>>3055165
literally depends on what you want to use it for but mamiya medium format cameras are pretty solid in general
>>3055143
Ebay or Keh.
You will have better luck with Ebay honestly.

Ok /p/ I've recently gotten into film photography and still learning. In regards to pushing film why am I not able to find how long you are supposed to compensate for in developing times?
Everywhere I look it's just "tell your lab".
>>3055269
C41 or B&W?
>>3055269
for BW film developing times depend on the temperature. There's a nice app available that gives good developing times for pushing. Also take a look at http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php
I can only tell for the Tetenal kit for color development and you have to increase the development time (at 38°C) by 30s per stop.

hello board, i got a yashica mat 124 G froma a relative, how would you go about cleaning it up? Is cleaning alcohol a good choice?
>>3055016
mhhhh i like
>>3055284
Buy liquid especially for cleaning lenses/cameras. Lens elements have coatings that may be damaged by alcohol.
Also you can permanently damage the Mat 124g by fucking around with the flash sync settings, so leave it on whatever setting it's on now and never touch it again (you probably won't ever need to change it anyway). If you wanna use the camera and it's been sitting for a while, I'd say take it to a (good) camera repairman and have them do a CLA on it
>>3055281
Why is SakuraColor so based?
Can you imagine how nice this would be if you'd held the fucking camera still (and composed a worthwhile photo too, I guess)?

I am not sure that i will find anyone that does this in my area (i am in south italy)
as for the proper liquid, is the shit on amazon any good? Like i see there is some rollei liquid for lenses and one for sensors, i guess the one for the lenses is ok but i mean the one for dslr is anything good?
>>3055288
nontheless thank you so much for the help
>>3055299
Yeah anything for lenses will be perfect. If it's just dusty a good wipe down with a microfibre cloth would be fine.
And if the camera seems to be working fine then there's no need to have it CLA'd. No harm in running a test roll through it to see if it's working properly
>>3055302
ok, great, thank you so much again, will try that.
>>3055289
Reason why most of the Centuria photos are just snapshits is because I didn't believe that some of the shots would turn out so good.
Just finished my first roll with the Canon P.
Shot it pretty quickly since I had an inkling that the rangefinder was off, but I was wrong.
Anyway, this camera is terrific and the Canon 50mm 1.8 LTM lens is tack sharp.
I'll post 6 or so photos from the roll. Film is Acros 100, overexposed thanks to my generous use of the sunny 16 rule

How do you guys store powder chems? I want to start buying 5 litres of ID-11 instead of 1 litre because it's only a few quid more. Want to get some nice air tight bottles to replace the much reused old bottles of Ilfosol 3 and fix I have been using because the seals on them go eventually.
I'd rather go plastic than glass so I can squeeze air out without having to use marbles. What are you folks using? HDPE? PET? Old coke bottles? I thought maybe a scientific outlet might be a reasonable shout but I'm coming up blank lads.

So I went through my grandma's stuff and found this. Found some expired film and some old bulbs on ebay, fixed it up and took a few pictures. How I'll develop them I haven't figured out yet.
Anyway I'm a DSLR person, but finding this thing, fixing it up and using it has triggered something of a film bug I need to satisfy. I want a film camera.
After some research, I think what I'd like is a fully mechanical SLR. Like a Pentax MX or a Canon FTB. Anyone have any experience with '70s era SLRs?

someone give me a quick rundown on the epson v line?
looking to spend as little as possible but not entirely to the detriment on the images.. I'll rarely be printing the scans, mostly for online use. Was thinking a v600.
So I recently ordered something from e-bay.
I was given an arrival estimate, but it has passed. I have no tracking number.
Should I just wait? It is coming from the U.K. to Japan (cheaper than buying locally surprisingly enough). Both have rather competant podtal services, so it shouldn't be running late.

For some reason they don't exist on yahoo auctions, japanese ebay listings, camera no naniwa, or local camera stores.
They have lots of X-700s, however, but their price approches $200-300.

I've been using smaller bottles to keep chems that're mixed from powder, and filling them right up. This is effectively similar to using accordion bottles, or marbles, except that the current 1/3rd litre or whatever will be going bad at any given time. Idea being that the little oxygen in there is going to do its thing and then the rest will go inert (seals' imperfections notwithstanding).
But, tell you the truth, I've mostly given up on powders at this point. Liquid concentrates are so much more convenient and durable. Wish there was a syrup version of D-76 really.

>>3056406
Have you ever seen a film after development, but before fixing? (such as when separate test pieces end up overlapping on the same reel, because I'm a cheap arse.) It's grey on the unexposed part, and black in the exposed part. You'll be looking for it to turn real dark.
Fixing just removes the grey undeveloped part to make the image printable, and to bring silver halide chemistry in the film to a completion.
As for timing the test and telling something based on it, I have no idea. Suppose you'd test fresh stock first and compare later on?
>>3056392
It's adequately proof against rain if the lens has an ass gasket, and is in itself not vulnerable. Generally only G lenses will be weather sealed. Don't open the film back in the rain though, or remove the lens, obviously.

I've used mine in torrential downpours comparable to the resulting gushing brought fort from the cunts of girls attending an Ed Sheeran contest.
It was a press camera and it's weather sealed as good as was possible back in the day.
Most lenses such as the 50/1.4D in this shot aren't but they still can handle some moisture fine.
I got disheartened after my first role came back overexposed. Now i have like 7 rolls to develop, it used to be that I was just sad and didn't want to look at my failure but now that I am in a better place I am excited to see them but I am opting to get them processed at the end of the year to see a year of photography, Now I am shooting much more tentative with cool film like Porta.

Black and white is easy because it's just 3 steps and you don't have to be that exact about anything.
Colour film is just as easy to do, but the whole process has to be more precise. The temperature of the chemicals _has_ to be exactly what it says, and the time has to be exact too. The good part about processing C41 is that it's a standardised process, so all films process for the same amount of time and in the same dilution chemicals.

Half framers of /fgt/, have you compared the various Olympus F models? I know the FT finder is supposed to be dimmer, and the FV is quite rare. The F in turn lacks a microprism for accurate focusing. It's also more expensive than the rather common FT.
I'm about to pick up a F kit while I'm here in Japan and I was originally after an F or FV, but now I'm thinking would the FT be just as good for cheaper?
so im guessing that no SLRs (let alone completely manual ones, maybe with a meter) are being manufactured nowadays?
>>3056723
Nikon still produces and sells the f6. Maybe even other models
>>3056725
i guess, but at that point film just becomes a stylistic choice of a picture over a fun and engaging way to photograph, it's no fun when it's all electric
>>3056729
You can still set everything in all manual and have the same fun, alongside with readily findable batteries and a warranty
>>3055098
My friend for $20 I get 2600x1700 scans and $8.25 just to develop. Don't worry I got a light table and macro lens now I just need to learn all this Lightroom bs
>>3056729
There's more to it, if I follow your train of thought a Memeshica T* series is also no fun considering they are about as automatic as a disposable.
The F5/F6 have their place, I wouldn't get them as a first film camera but if you have an extensive library of Nikon lenses they are worth it.
You still get everything you want, full on manual etc.. only in the most advanced film bodies ever made.
My Leica and og Nikon F see more use but the F5 is an infallible beast of a camera, it's a joy to use, it may not be shiny and chrome but damn if that big meaty body isn't a joy to hold and use, the controls are logical, the layout is great.
Fucking finally.
Took over three weeks to arrive instead of the estimated 4 days.
All the Sakura are pretty much gone now.
Shoulda just bought locally instead of trying to save money.

I'm currently using the Pentax K1000 and have been thinking about stepping up to a 'better' model though I don't really see much of a difference between my pentax and say an f5 besides the fact that the f5 can take multiple exposures. Won't the picture be the same more or less just depending on the glass I use? It is not like a DSLR with better or worse specs, it is just exposing film, right?
>>3056768
yes
>>3056768
Yes. And you can take multiple exposures on k1000
How long can you leave film in the camera for?
I live in a seriously shit and grey town but when it's sunny there are some nice places to go and shoot. The sun was out for an hour or so so I ran to the reservoir and took 10 or so shots until the sun went away and it's been grey and rainy ever since with half a roll still in my camera
>>3056784
like a couple years with no problems. If it's slide film it'll go bad quicker but normal negative film will stay good for pretty much decades
>>3055010
Do I need UV filter for Superia X-tra 400 film?
>>3056740
fuck lightroom, just go all in and use the full photoshop
>>3055010
Is 6000x4000 too high resolution for scans?
>>3056848
It depends on what scanner you are using and the size of the film you are scanning. Also if the scanner can optically scan at that high of res vs interpolation.
Its not too high just might be more than what you need.
>>3056856
a7ii w/ SEL90M28. I doubt I will go larger than A4 print size, but the local shop will only give me about 1000ish scans.
>>3056742
i definitely agree they have their place but unfortunately that place is not in my interest
i would have hoped that at least somewhere manual SLRs were still made for student use but oh well
>>3056863
If you have a good rig around that a7ii (ie good light source to iluminate the film and a rock solid copy stand or tripod) and make sure you focus on the grain of the film you should be able to pull quite a lot out. Definitely enough for an A4 print.
>>3056867
Awesome, thanks.
I have a passable tripod and light pad setup, just need a proper film holder and I am set. Getting decent enough shots without one even.
>>3056880
Anytime, I use a v600 from Epson but also have a digital cam scanning rig. I use it infrequently because it can be such a pain in the ass to set up. If you are planning on doing lots of scans it might be worth it to look into a flatbed scanner but if you don't mind the set up you will probably get better results with your cam if you optimize the workflow.
>>3056865
There are plenty second hand to go around still, to make it profitable is hard and only Leica really seems to manage due to Leicalust.
>>3056768
In terms of results there will be no difference apart from the fact that the metering on the F5 is infallible, it's an easier beast to get solid results with. The Pentax K1000 is simple. It does exactly what it needs to do, and nothing more. The F5 does more then you ever need.
Bought some used film holders and one of them was loaded. This sheet is ruined, but can anyone identify it by the notches? i have another one of the same kind

Took some HP5 for the first time to the place I get film developed. They said they can't do it. They could do Xp2 because it uses the same processing as colour or something, but they can't do HP5.

>>3056918
Alot of places wont touch black and white films.
>>3056918
Black and white is a different chemical process to colour negative film. XP2 is a black and white film but it uses the colour process. Real black and white is very easy to do at home, and very cheap once you get past the initial costs of buying a tank, changing bag, etc.

Think I answered you in discord, but the absolute easiest way to pay is by paying at the convenience store. To buy you just bid like a typical auction site.
So the only way I know how to develop film is through drug stores and they give you those little 5x2 photos and your negatives back.
How do you go about getting large prints done? Is it exclusive to certain types of film?
Please tell me they won't make them all fuckhuge
How the hell does this work?
>>3057115
Also, do scanners make these shots less detailed? I noticed alot of the film shots ITT have grain.
I want to transition from film to digital, but you can get CRISP right?
>>3055589
That's... Actually kinda funny. Never thought of that one myself.
>>3057115
>>3057123
you can buy your own equipment to develop film at home (paterson tank, chemicals, etc) you dont have to send it anywhere if you dont want to
as for prints, you can take negatives that you develop and scan those (dont use a shitty scanner for paper documents) and take the scans and print those larger
film lets you print larger due to the inert detail that film lets you get
and literally all film has a grain to it, higher ISO (sensitivity) film will have more grain to it
>>3057155
So technically its less detailed than digital?
>>3057160
other way around m8
digital can't compare with film unless you're trying to spend lik $60k for a camera

Is this shit more or less normal for a 100% crop on a 3200dpi scan from a V600? This hasn't been processed or anything, just auto-tone in LR. It's pretty gross, no?
I'm trying to figure out the simplest ways to get a good workflow going with it, and I just can't seem to get the kind of results I'd want to go for prints with. Looks about right for a v600. Is it 35mm? I wouldn't bother printing 35mm scans from a v600. You can maybe get away with making small prints from 120.
Also, v600 can't actually do 3200dpi. More like 1600. Source: http://www.filmscanner.info/en/EpsonPerfectionV600Photo.html
>As it is the case for almost all flat bed scanners, it also applies for the Epson Perfection V600 Photo that in case of the scannings of film material one cannot expect to get the quality of a good film scanner. The focus of the flat bed devices is clearly the digitalization of non transparent documents as the paper fotos, graphics and texts.
>In our testscan done with the USAF test chart with the V600, the vertical lines of the element 5.2. and the horizontal lines of the element 4.5 are barely recognizable. According to our resolution table, an effective resolution of 1560ppi results from that. This is less than a quarter of the resolution of 6400ppi declared by the producer. This is much too less for high quality scans of negatives or slides! For the 35mm format, some image files of only approximately 3,6 megapixels result.

No idea, but by appearance very likely a fixed narrow aperture and a fixed shutter speed. I've got a similar one and they have quite dreamy, holga-like single element plastic lenses. Put some fast film in it and keep in mind with those kinds of cameras (assuming it is one of those) you'll need to be at least five or six feet away from whatever you want to photograph.
If it's an auto-focus compact then I have no idea. Post an update when you get a roll through it though!
>>3057388
Film grain isn't the same thing as digital noise, although they look similar and are very similar in practical terms. People also generally use the terms grain and noise interchangeably.
Film grain is a real, physical thing. It's a part of the emulsion, basically little clumps.
Digital noise is more like the 'static' you'd get in an old TV, simply put it's stray electricity.
is superia worth the $13 a box?
Just developed 2 rolls of Maco AQS Eagle shot at 400, HC-110(b) for 6:30 at 20°C, per recommendation on /p/ and elsewhere to treat it like Retro 400s. Came out underdeveloped, plus the developer came out a brownish-red which I don't think Retro 400s ever did.
In conclusion, AQS Eagle is not Retro 400s; otherwise the negs would've been nice and thicc instead of kinda lame like now. I'll give it 8 minutes the next time.
