Wanted to try again and get a critique on my dslr scan here. I know I need a longer focal length macro to get less fall off but other than that lemme know. I'm thinking I'll just say fuck it and buy a v700, sell my k-3 kit. I don't shoot digital anymore anyways.

>color negs don't like to be underexposed
well i want to overexpose by just one step
but iam shooting aperture priority.....should i just check the light meter via aperture priority and then switch to manual or is there a better trick
>>
>>3050988
Does your camera have exposure compensation?
>>
>>3050970
You don't need a longer focal length. I scan with 50mm just fine. Are you stopping down? I typically shoot at f8.

You're scans are still very cyan, especially the second one. Try grey balancing and/or black balancing off the negative frame after inverting.

>>3050988
Use either exposure compensation (+1) or set your iso to 1 stop less (if you're shooting 400iso film, set your iso to 200).
>>
>>3050991
yes...but i tought that exposure compensation is only for situations like having strong backlight with your subject standing infront of it :o

>>3050995
yeah i usually do that with my expired films
....
so i can basicly overexposure with the exposure compensation as if i would jump from
1/125 to 1/250 sec ? and even in little steps like
1/3 and so on ?
wow
>>
>>3051001
Yeah if you set it to +1 exposure compensation it'll overexpose by one stop in Aperture priority, which is what you were looking for

Anyone have any tricks for shooting things in motion with a lower ISO? I want to catch more things going on but I don't like having to set my shutter speed to a lower setting. Can I set it to a higher setting and not really have to worry about exposure, or set, let's say, 400 ISO film to 800 on the dial?
>>
>>3051026
There's no trick. Either you use a higher ISO film, use a wider aperture or a longer shutter speed. Setting your ISO dial to 800 will just underexpose your film by 1 stop.

If you're trying to capture motion in low light, either use a flash or push B&W film (like Tri-X or HP5) to 1600

>>
>>3051029
ah damn, looks like i'll be looking for a new lens. i got some 800 the other day I'm dying to try out, and saw 1000 on the internet I want to order.

I have a om-1 and it has a mirror lock up feature to eliminate shake, and apparently it works for night photography, would that work as well? I just want to avoid my pictures coming out one big blur, and don't know much about the picture quality of 800 film.

All of these things I plan on learning as I go, but help is also appreciated

Mirror lockup will only really help for situations where the camera needs to be perfectly still i.e. long exposures. It's not super useful for shooting handheld, and you obviously can't see through the viewfinder so focusing becomes difficult.

800ISO film looks great. Pic related is 1600 iso film

wheres the best place to get film developed? also whats the best film currently in production?
>>
>>3051109
not OP but the best place depends on where you live
the best film depends on a few things a) what you want to shoot and b) how you want it to look.
when it comes to black and white films, it is almost always best to dev yourself as it gives you far more control on how it looks. this can come with a whole lot of experimentation and trial and error, but as you go you will find that your film choice and the way you develop your film contributes a great deal to your look.

those of us with a lot of film experience can give you pointers as to a good film for you but there is really no all round best film.

Anyone have a good idea for storing Fuji packfilm shots in the go, keeping both negatives and positives free from dirt and sticking to each other?

Considering bringing a small family photo album to keep the positives in after they've dried, but I don't have a good way of storing negatives without them getting stuck to each other.

The Yash Matt 124g has a built in LM. You can pick up a used one pretty damn cheap if you don't mind it looking a little beaten up.

If you're not into TLR's then maybe a Kiev 60? They were manufactured up till like 1999 so you can get one in good shape for cheap if you search. But you'd have to purchase a LM too, so maybe the Yash is the cheaper option overall.

You'll be fine mate, just spot meter and know with snow your usually in high contrast scenarios so either your shadows are gonna have minimal detail or your gonna have blown out highlights on the snow. Just meter for what you want to keep. If your shooting landscape stop down get the snow and try keep some shadow detail, if you're shooting a subject just meter for them. Just think what you want as a subject in the photo. You shouldn't screw up that much, don't over think it. My photos arnt in that harsh of light and I probably could have underexposed a bit to get more snow detail.

You don't need anything fancy desu, doesn't take any space either, just make sure it's easy to reach for when the weather turns. Downside of the ETRSi is if you fall on it, you will break.

Lovely tones, thank you for sharing this. I hope I'll get to be on a similar setting, albeit probably not that late in the day. It will depend on the rest of the people in my little group. I'll try to make the most of it either way.

Heh, it's an impressive little beast to carry around and use. How do you like the Nikon F? I've only heard great things about it.
>>
>>3051496
Thanks.
The Bro sounds sweet, I need to get in MF but my Plustek sort of locked me in 35mm.

I've had the Nikon F since forever, it's all the essentials and nothing superflous, everything mechanical and engineered to a ridiculous standard. A reliable brass brick with a massive viewfinder. It's the camera I carry the most.

I also have an F5, the contrast is massive, as is the size. All in all probably one of the most capable cameras ever made, the focus motor is beastly and with a big lens you can feel the glass being thrown around in the barrel. The light meter is way better then you would ever need for film. It's essentially a cheatcode for film.

Would recommend both.
>>
>>3051099
I usually dont like nature but that's very nice.
>>
>>3051588
I just got it, I will be using it a lot. I am mirin' the film scanner though. I'll have to save up for a while before I can afford one myself. My advice for buying into MF is look around as much as you can. Deals pop up but it takes a while before finding something you want that won't blow up your budget. But you probably know that already.

I see, it sounds like a dream camera. Sturdy and no-bullshit functional. And the F5 is practically its bulky AF sibling with the best light meter ever. Haha I probably need to stop gearfagging before I'm stuck eating crackers for a month, my wallet can't take it.

I basically found my father's OM2n and use it as my main. Bought some more Zuiko glass for it and I swear by it pretty much. Then I wanted to try a cheap modern film SLR body so I got an EOS 300V for pennies with an OM-EOS converter and use it as a backup.

As far as I'm concerned, along with the Bronica, other than maybe getting a scanner and chems I am done with gear.

The lense has a little fungus, but it just seems to be behind the front element, which looks like it comes off easily enough.
And it did have some of that black sticky degraded foam on the shutter blades, but I got most of it off with metho. I actually mainly bought it to sell, I have another one, and it has lost the click detentes in the mode dial, which is a bit of a pain, but aside from that is a good beater body for flash photos.

Are shatbeds not actually as bad as people make them out to be? Cause this shit seems pretty impressive, or is it just a good scan because of how large the film is? I'm looking at a v700 for medium format but unsure of how good the results are going to considering how much smaller the film is.
>>

Most flatbeds will resolve grain on 400 speed B&W film as long as it isn't Delta 400 or TMY. Much more comes down to how good your film is, and how good your lens was, than to scanner quality.

But by all means, spend on a v700. It's a good scanner. Expensive as well. But it'll certainly stop you gearfagging about shatbeds any further.
>>
>>3052128
I use a v700 at my college and find that it does a shit job of 35mm and 120 negs but if you get a good wet print and scan from the 8x10 it works great.
>>
For 30 bucks it'll do fine for posting online, just don't expect any killer prints out of it.

m8, he shoots fucking 8x10, of course the resolution is going to blow you away.
Shatbedding is true degenerate behaviour.
Witness this DSLR cuck scan of some 6x9 Velveeta. This format has just more than one quarter of the vertical resolution of 8x10, and about 1/3 horizontally. So if we're calling my 6x9 scan about 70 megapixels, an 8x10 scan at the same magnification would produce a 700MP file. Woe betide the computer attempting a perspective deformation on that file.

If you have a good digital camera I'd suggest buying a macro lens over a flatbed scanner. You get better results, it will b faster to scan with, and you'll add a piece of equipment (the macro lens) that you can use for other things. A flatbed scanner can only do one thing and it's not very good at it.

Off to the lab I go.

need your opinions /p/

eversince i got the fuji xpro1 i started to carry my camera almost everyday with me taking photos, mostly street. later i bought the contax g2 with it's 45mm
3 years later the xpro1 broke. i wanted to buy another body bc i have the 18mm f2 and the 35mm f1,4 still and it's a good camera
im photographing lots with the contax g2 lately and i love film photography

now im not sure if i want to buy the fuji ga 645 or the digital fuji xpro1 lol
the thing is...i don't have much shekels sooo
should i invest in the fuji ga645 or roll with the xpro1 bc somehow digital photography is still usefull...i borrowed the x100 as a backup and it's too small and not that good as the xpro1 ....
>>
>>3052432

The Fuji 18mm and 35mm f 1.4 are literally the two worst x-mount lenses ever made. Terrible autofocus speeds, and very mediocre optics.

Give an X-T2 or a6500 a try and you will be blown away.

If you want to change mounts or formats, now is the time to do it before you actually buy a good x-mount lens.
>>
>>3052441
>>3052432

Oh, and give Fuji a call. Warranty is most likely up, but if you ask nicely and get a rep having a good day they might repair it for cheap.

Probably cheaper than buying new.

It's a Diacord L, so yes it has the meter, which is spot fucking on considering it's almost 60 years old (and doesn't require any batteries). Carried a lightmeter with me the first trip out and realized I totally didn't need it. I have never shot a Yashica or an autocord, but forum chat says the Diacord (not the Ricohflex) has a lens as good as the autocord. I picked this one up from a gentleman on apug. Best $130 I have ever spent. So much so, I will probably sell my rb67 kit, which I spent a bunch more money on. This thing is small, light, quick and easy to use, and I get quite a few keepers from it.

This is mine, probably similar to anons. A copy stand would work much nicer than a tripod as you can set it up once in the exact position needed and never have to change it, where as your constantly setting up the tripod and spending some time adjusting each time you scan. If you can find a copy stand for under $50 I'd recommend picking one up, if not just use your tripod.

How do you get rid of the pixels on a cell phone display when DSLR scanning? I tried using a piece of glass because there's no way I can set any distance between the film/phone without loosing the light but that didn't work. Also how do you go about color correcting a color negs blue cast?
>>
>>3051099
I shoot Rollei 400IR a bit.
Yours is one I wouldn't have tried since I'd screw up the exposure. Can as I ask how you exposed it?
With the Rollei I mostly go for something very sunlit and shoot f/16 for 0.5-1.0 seconds or the equivalent. It works alright but inside a forest like that I doubt I'd know how to get a decent exposure.
>>
Stupid Question:

I understand that focal lengths differ between 120 & 35mm due the size of the neg.. However do apertures have to be considered differently?
I'm not a very lateral thinker & cant figure out if the f.stops will behave the same with (I assume?) a larger aperture due to increase in lense size ?

Have looked around on internet but cant find anything really, except a few formum posts saying you might underexpose a stop?

Hope thats coherent, Thank you

My advice for shooting snow is to bring filters and use them. Just leave a polariser strapped to the front, and with 100 ISO film that should let you access a more normal range of shutter speeds. Use a hood too. Put some tape over the metal film reminder on the back unless you want it freezing to your widdle nose, also a rubber eyecup can be nice. Oly's take nikon (standard) eyepiece fittings I believe.
Keep a spare pair of batteries in your pocket.
Again, re: condensation, don't throw out your plastic film canisters, keep your film in them even after it's shot.
Advance your film slowly; it's more brittle in the cold, and it's possible to get static arcing on your film in very cold dry conditions.
>>

You need to get the pixels out of your depth of field, or completely mask them with some kind of diffusion material. Using a phone is pretty retarded T B H.
Getting good quality light is the number one most challenging part of DSLR scanning.

The f stops behave exactly the same way. An f/8, 1/60th at 100 ISO exposure will be exactly the same on any film format.
The difference with larger formats is that you will get less depth of field for any given aperture, so your f/8 medium format shot will still have a considerable amount of background blur a lot of the time, whereas a 35mm shot might not.
>>
>>3052911
the forest was not completely dark, quite a bit of sunlight was coming through the canopy.

I set my camera to 50asa and metered without the filter and then put the filter on before the exposure. I think it was f8 at 1/8s then shot one stop either side.

never tried the rollei film though so I can't say how it would be different.

Leica glow, Leica glow everywhere.

It's a chrome band Hektor, from 1932, the rarest besides the first run.
It's bokeh is notoriously 'out there' which can give pics an incredibly dreamy vibe and can become gimmicky very fast if you shoot wide-open all day.

I am using an a7ii w/ SEL90M28. I put the negatives on top of tablet screen (lifted off a little so pixels don't get focused on, pretty sure the negative wasn't completely flat, but was damn close), and shoot from a tripod.

Haven't shot a new roll yet, but found some old negatives from 1986 and started working on those.

After some experimentation, I get decently clear enough shots of the negatives (though a light pad and negative holder will make it infinitely easier I think), but am having absolute hell getting the colors right.

Any tips?

I've kinda got a stupid question - what exactly differentiates different film cameras, other than how much you can tweak settings and shit?

Isn't most of the work done by the lens and the film itself, on film cameras? Between two film cameras using the same lens, film, and shooting at the same speed, aperture, etc, what will be the differences between the shots?

(important note: I know next to fuck-all about film photography)
>>
>>3053241
You're pretty much right. Film cameras are just complicated boxes that film goes in, the majority of the image quality is dictated by lens and film.

That said, there are some key features that make some film cameras better than others. Viewfinder size, high shutter speed, motorised film advance, light meter, mirror lockup, build quality, interchangeable backs, modular design etc are all points of difference between film cameras that may directly or indirectly affect the final image.

If you're just getting into film photography don't worry about any of this. Buy a cheap SLR and a 50mm lens and go for your life
>>
>>3053241
Nothing, you're exactly correct. The only caveat to this is that some cameras may have smoother shutters whose operation will contribute less vibration and result in a fractionally sharper image, but this parameter is so dependent on environmental factors and photographer technique that it's moot most of the time.
Some cameras are just more pleasant to use than others. Easier to focus, easier to achieve correct exposure, lighter, better looking, compatible with more lenses, better integrated to flash systems, different film advances.
>>
>>3053241
>>3053245
>>3053247
Also, obviously, cameras that you like better you'll shoot more. Cameras are like cars in that regard, you can compare spec-sheets all day but holding it in your hand and enjoying using it trumps any other spec.

I shoot 90% of the time with a Canon P from the 1950s. Almost all of my other cameras are much better technically than this old thing, but it gets the most use because it fits well in my hand and it's just easy to use.
>>
>>3053241
>>3053245
>>3053247
>>3053250
You could also differentiate based on film format.
Personally I prefer 120 and 4x5 film because I like to blow my images up when I print them, only real downsides are that the cameras are big and clunky and the film can easily break the bank. (like $4.50 for a roll of 120, $60 for 25 sheets of 4x5)

I'm happy with my Mamiya RZ67 for 120 tho, shit is great for doing studio work
>>
>>3053260
Pictures don't convey how comically large the RB67 is. It's at least 2x bigger than it looks in pictures, shocked me when I saw one IRL
>>
>>3053261
I really love working with it tho, despite how shitty it is to try to bring the damn thing anywhere
>>
>>3053241
>Between two film cameras using the same lens, film, and shooting at the same speed, aperture, etc, what will be the differences between the shots?
two film shots made by the same camera with exactly same settings are different in that the grain pattern will be a new one each time. sure, it has a structure, but the way it goes will be new every time, thats the reason why when you see films at the cinema the grain appears to flicker and "move" incessantly, specially in static shots.

Anybody else hear gonna keep a kit in good condition just for someone else in their family? I'm seriously thinking about getting a nice kit together and just putting it away, I got a feeling like film equiptment has depreciated as much as it could, and it might get harder in 20+ years to get a nice set up, also sentimentality of handing things down.

You have a Sony, so buy Capture One Pro 10 for Sony. I think it's $40. Learn to use it. It is a thousand times better for film scans than Lightroom. Photoshop has way more tools on hand, but isn't as streamlined for processing raws. And the BIG bonus is that CapOne does tethering, which is a godsend when scanning film. Once setup, one click scans, imports, inverts and applies a basic tone curve.

Natura kicks ass, you'll love it. You can pretty much shoot it anywhere from 400-2000 on the same roll and get awesome results

Hi Guys! I looking for something cheap to stabilize my camera when recording. I found something like pic related, but I don't know how to find it on shop or how is this even called. Maybe you guys know something? Thanks in advance!
>>
>>3053625
Yeah what I've seen of it looks promising. And I usually push black and white to 1600 so I can shoot it like I normally shoot, instead of having to slow down like I usually have to when I shoot color.
>>
>>3053626
Try the video thread, this thread is for the format of film (i.e 35mm, 120 etc) not 'filming'
>>
Can someone redpill me on caffenol?
Is it possible to push 400 to 800?
Also when pushing film do you just treat the film as the iso you're going for? Or is there another procedure?
>>
>>3053641
With pushing film you shoot it as if it's the desired speed.

It's important to understand that pushing doesn't actually change the speed of the film. It's underexposing, and then overdeveloping to compensate. Also, pushing only really affects the highlights. If you don't give the film any light to work with in the shadow, pushing won't magically conjure up shadow detail. It's like trying to turn the volume up on silence.
>>
I recently got given an EOS 5 and plan on making it my main film cam, anyone got advice on getting the most out of it? I've never used an automatic film shooter before. Also any zoom lens recs? All I've got is the shitty kit lens.

The 24-104/4L and a good 400ISO film will turn you into an unstoppable snapshitting machine.

No way you learned all the tools of CapOne overnight. It will take days or weeks to get a handle on which knobs to turn to color correct color negative film. I'll give you a few tips. Crop image. Go to the Exposure tab>Levels. For the red, green and blue channels drag both input sliders (top) to the opposite end. Drag the left output slider (bottom) to the right until it just touches the left side of the histogram. Drag the right output slider to the left until it touches the right side of the histogram. Do that for R, G and B channels. Do NOT adjust the saturation control in the Exposure tab, it will shift the color balance. Adjust tone with the levels and curves tools selecting "RGB" in each tool. Goto Color tab. Make a course adjustment with the White Balance tool. Fine tune shadow, midtone and highlight with the "Color Balance" tool. In my experience using a Sony, at this point your image will be oversaturated. Go to the "Color Editor" tool. At the bottom of the tool you will see 7 colors. Highlight (don't unclick) the bottom row (all colors) and adjust the saturation to taste. Give this a try and let me know how it works for you.

Forget using a piece of glass to flatten the film, you will get reflections. Get proper film holders. I get excellent results using the Lomography holders, both 120 and 35. Don't let the name fool you, these are well designed and made holders.

Okay so I want a new regular film to move to. I've been considering Portra 400 but have heard good things about Ektar and Fuji equivalents. Basically I shoot landscapes as well as my qt gf and myself in those landscapes, I want high sharpness and low grain and plenty of latitude for colour correction. Any suggestions?

Portra 400 would be a terrible mistake then. What format are you shooting?
I'd suggest Superia 400 if you're a babby cuck shooting 35mm who's afraid of slow film. Finer grain and better colours than Portra 400.

Fast film is more versatile since you can handhold the camera and not have to shoot wide open in a wider range of situations. I'll use ISO 100 if I know I'm going to be outdoors on a sunny day, but I think 400 is a lot more versatile. I hate being stuck with slow film and suddenly it's dark and I have to take off the color filter to gain a stop or two and pray my wide open slow shutter speed handheld photo isn't a blurry mess.

I wanna get into film photography, and I want to go straight to a medium format.

I'd be dumping my DSLR (Pentecks K-3) so I'll have well enough money to spare, but I have some concerns.

How long will film remain? I'd like to go to this method as my primary, but I'm unsure if film will live on, let alone medium format.

Where do I get this shit fixed? Do I have to travel to the ends of the earth just to find repairs?

I'm too poor to afford a f00l frame dslr, and hell if I'm buying a medium format digital ever.

I would like to shift to this style anyways as the period of waiting for film development is more my speed.
>>
>>3054067
they were literally just small headhsots printed on standard photopaper.

and they did work, I got my passport more than a year ago with no issue using them
>>
>>3054128
Honestly I sincerely doubt film will disappear in our lifetime. There are still many thousands of pro photographers out there who shoot primarily on film and as long as one good company is still pumping out C41 it will remain a popular and viable profession/hobby. I can't speak for the longevity of more niche film types though.
>>
>>3054128
If you're looking into getting into shooting medium format film, your best bet is to pick up a decent used 120 camera.

Mamiyas are pretty cheap if you search around ebay for them (I got my RZ67 from there and its like the thing never left the factory in Japan in the ~30 years its been around).

If you want a lighter carry 120, you can look around for Rolleicord/Rolleiflex TLR cameras, though their prices vary depending on where you find them.

And you'd be surprised just how many pro photographers still like using 120 film, plus if it ever dies out for any reason, you can buy digital backs got a lot of the bigger 120 cameras (Mamiya/Hasselblad)

as for reparis, you're more than likely on your own unless you have a decent photo supply place near you. I have a couple reasonably priced places near me in KC that always go to if I have problems

It's as heavy as a Leica M3 if that means anything to you. It's well built, fits well in your hand.

It has a 1:1 viewfinder which is awesome for 50mm lenses, and means you can use the camera with your other eye open which is sick. Rangefinder patch on my copy is a tad dim but you can quite easily remedy that with a little blob of black sharpy in the middle of the viewfinder.

It's got a couple of quirks. For one, the film door has two locks. Also there's a collar around the shutter release which you move from shooting to rewind. If you leave it between shoot and rewind it'll lock the shutter, but if you jiggle the collar a bit too much it'll release the shutter. Also it has no parallax correction and no lightmeter
