Previous Thread:

Fuck traffic. Just trying to enjoy my Saturday afternoon fishin for an hour or two before it gets dark and they decide to completely shut down the highway because of a fuel truck on fire. Ended up getting delayed close to 2 hours after standing around in the 595 parking lot and only got half an hour of casting before it got dark.

Looks like lots of people participating in the Secret Santa already sent some gifts so hopefully we will see those by the end of the week. Dank memes via post.

Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly and trout. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism.

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Eastern Virginia (the rivers and the bay)
Florida (saltwater plus dink ponds Pepsi goes to)
Texas (subjectively best bass fishing in the country)

Where would you live?
>>
>>905719

definitely florida if you want to live urban and fish. I can get off work and stop by a dink pond on the way home or drive 10 mins to fish salt.
>>
>>905724
Will niggers or spics try to rob me every time I take my boat out? Is there catfishing?

I do a little catfish, bass, and gar fishing in freshwater and pretty much all saltwater in the Summer. Got a 21' center console boat.

Texas
>>
Hey Yuro, is the address in the email the exact same as you enter it on the website? Just checking because it's different from what I'm used to addresses looking like.
>>
>>905719
I'd say Florida. They have some famous lakes for bass as well. Lots of small lakes or ponds of after work fishing. And you got both the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean. And it's a cheap state to live in. Texas is decent too economically. Never been to Virginia but I'd imagine it would be more shit to live in. Less jobs than Florida and Texas and also they have state income tax I think.
>>
Guys can we talk about fishing?
>>
>>905727

don't get me wrong, I'm from texas, I love it and would move back in a second, but this is the first time I've lived in an urban area that was as easy to fish as when I lived rural.

And if a nigger tries to rob you here just shoot them.
>>
>>905734
How are factory/distribution center jobs there? It's all I've ever done. I was thinking of going to community college but meh. I don't hate working. Are there any jobs there where I do 12 hour shifts 3 days a week? Preferably fork lift.

What cities would you recommend?

I might buy myself a 2 wt fly rod blank and build that for bluegill and creek chubs I found a website with nice cheap blanks and if a 7 inch bluegill is fun on a 4 weight I can only imagine a slow to moderate action 2 weight
>>

I'd pick Florida. It's the exotic freshwater fish plus the little tropical saltwater critters that do it for me. I'd love to find a canal somewhere and catch little grunts and mojarras and baby snappers all day.

Other than the Wilson Venom ($500 AUD), any rods that are specifically designed to flick large lures? Talking about 200mm wake snakes and the like. 1-3oz.

Wanting it for said lures but also trolling largish lures going after BIG murray Cod, maybe Barras when I get some cash together to go that far north.
>>
>>905855

>>
>>905858
I'd have to find something in the 6-7ft range. How's the accuracy with them? Still needing to land reliably into, around and ontop of snags and other structure where cod like to hide.

Really not sure what I'm looking for. Just beginning my chase for big cod. Getting plenty of decent sized ones around the 60cm range. There's some big fish in the smaller creeks around here. Fair few blokes i know have hit the magic 100cm cod. But there's much much bigger ones out there. Record is 180cm and largest on record was over 1.8 m (6-ish ft) and 113 kg (250sh lb) in weight.

If you're just starting out like myself for the big green monsters I'd be more worried about terminal tackle than the actual rod, stuff like replacing your hooks and split rings on lures, Cod love to straighten them out.

thats an odd way to look at things. why limit yourself to 100k a year, especially in california? 40k in virginia? I have nothing to gauge that comment on, I once vacationed in virginia beach in the late 90's other than people seeming a bit slow the rest of the town didnt seem too bad, had a fun time golfing and fishing there...

I'm assuming youve never been to california.
>>
>>905965
When my mom wanted to gtfo of IL a few years back, she was thinking about going to Cali near San Diego. She has been a nurse in the OR forever and has had management jobs over nurses for the past decade. But if she went to CA, she would either have to get a master's degree or live like a poorfag so she picked FL instead because she wanted to be able to have a decent life making $75k.

I'm not gonna lie, after getting out of IL with the ridiculous taxes and coming to FL with no state income taxes and the rates on most other stuff is reasonable, there's no way I would want to live and work in a place like CA or NY.
>>
>>905968
You can make $50k/yr in most of the US and actually have the hope of buying a house and owning a car at the same time. Anywhere in Cali worth living, that is like studio apartment living.

plenty of people live on 75k in sd county.
though recently sd has had a insurgence of people wanting to move there which has driven the property values through the roof, at the time your mom was considering moving if she had bought a home then by now she wouldve doubled her money, been able to take a equity loan on the property and buy you a boat for being a good boy..see you lost out.

>>905972
i'm skeptical about that statement...
>>
>>905985
Yeah plenty of people live on 75k in SD county then live in a shithole. There's some really gross areas in SD I grew up there. When you reach adulthood you either leave or accept that you will have to work your ass off to afford living in El Cajon or some other shithole

I live in california and he is completely correct albeit exaggerating a little bit. The cost of living is insane here, the cost of buying a house or renting a house is insane. People making 50k before tax here might spend the 75% of their monthly income or more just on rent+food

Turns out it is a lefty model. I was wondering about that because on the Dick's website, they don't have a choice between left or right. Even the item descriptions on the receipt and during checkout don't have any code like L for lefty which most left handed reels will have.

But I'm actually stoked on that. I have been wanting to try a left handed memecaster because it always felt awkward switching hands after the cast and cranking with my right hand after using spinning reels for my whole life.

I also didn't pay attention to the speed and this one is 7.1:1 so a little faster than my 6.4 Abus and I'm happy about that. One of these days I'm gonna grab an 8.1 or whatever reel.

>tfw still can't really use it for another 3 weeks

I don't know if they're available in koala-land but the Ugly stik surf rods can throw up to 10oz. but that's a 15foot (almost 3 meter) rod that's going to be pretty heavy.

I use mine for shark fishing and can stand at the waters edge and send a 4oz sinker with a 3oz piece of cut bait probably 150 yards on a flat footed cast.

problem is with a rod like that you aren't going to feel anything under 10lbs biting

Parents say I need to move out by the end of 2017. I only make like $2K a month and rent prices around here start at $900. I don't want half my income going towards being a house poor cuck.

I posted an ad on Craigslist saying room wanted and posted my job, my hobbies, that I work 3-4 days a week and gone the rest, etc.

No replies. I tried contacting rooms for rent and none of them sounded very interesting. Since I'm not a "professional" AKA college graduate or a student, they don't want to "take a chance" with me. What the fuck? How does not having a college education automatically make you some loser druggie?

But for some practical advice just look for a room in a house with other young dudes living in it they're likely to not give a fuck about what you do
>>
>>906105
You posted an ad looking for people with a room. That's your problem. You are supposed to be replying to the ads posted by people who already have a place but have an extra room.

It isn't the same. And I'm moreso taking about restaurants and catered food. In Chicago, every couple of blocks there is a fire little joint with good hot dogs, italian beef and sausage, polish sausage, gyros, etc. They don't really have that around here. Most food places are chain places unless you want Caribbean food. Even the pizza at most places is garbage so I just get Little Caesars or Papa Johns because it is mediocre but they can't fuck up too bad.

There is a little Philly Cheesesteak place nearby and I ordered an Italian sausage from them. It was like chopped up breakfast sausage on a big ass hoagie roll. Not how it should be done. And there are a couple "Chicago Style" food places in the whole area and the one place has decent hot dogs but I got an Italian Beef from them and it was just dry and mediocre and had no flavor or spice.

Getting myself a new spinning setup for x-mas

Should I go with the new shimano ci4+
Or try out the Pflueger Patriarch

Can anyone vouch for either?
>>
>>906134
Buy me both for xmas and then I will let you know which one is better and you can buy thay for yourself.

The Stradic looks dank but I have had my eye on some of those nicer Pfluegers after owning a couple Presidents.
>>
>>906134
I will vouch for the shimano ci4+ I have a Stradic I like. However I like my shimano Sahara almost as much and it is less than half the price lol
>>
>>906138
Kek, yeah let me get right on that.

Have you looked at the difference between the normal Patriarch and the Patriarch XT? Looks to me that they are charging an extra $50 for a color change and an extra barring. Makes no sense
>>906139
How's the weight difference? I'm trying to get as light as I can for a nice jig and worm setup
>>
>>906145
Mine are different sizes you should look it up on shimano's site
>>
>>906145
I have the stradic 1000 FAML and it's the best ultra light reel I've used by far
>>
>>906148
>>906150
According to tackle warehouse the Pflueger is actually 1.4 ounces lighter. Might have to give a shot considering it's also $30 cheaper
>>
>>906145
Those Saharas are on sale for like $39 or $49 or something cheap right now on Bass Pro. But if you want light, that is when you have to start paying because the materials always drive up the price even if the internals are the same.

I gotta look at the XT. I have a Pflueger President and then a President LE. The regular ones go for $60 and the LE is $80 or $90 I think. I believe the difference is pretty much cosmetic (and maybe a couple things that shave a gram or two off). The LE has that nice sparkly black paint job with red anodized bits, and then the handle on the crank is red and the spool has some fancy cutouts. Also the crank deal might be made out of carbon fiber, or at least wrapped to look like it.

And fwiw, make sure you get a light and balanced rod too or else paying a lot for the lightweight reel will be worthless. That's what really makes the difference when you are jigging and bouncing around all afternoon. With my memecasters, that Carbonlite rod weighs nothing so when I'm palming it I can work the lures around like nothing. The Ugly Stik memecaster setup is so much heavier that it kinda sucks for finesse presentations and is much better suited for ripping big spinnerbaits through the water. Still gotta try that Lew's out, that rod actually seems nice and light for being a MH 6'8" rod or whatever. The reel on that isn't quite as small as my Revo, but not nearly as huge as some of the budget Chinese baitcasters.
>>
>>906153
Yeah you don't always get the most for your money with Shimano. It will be a solid reel, but I have no reason to believe that a nice Pflueger would have any problems either.
>>
>>906155
I'm gunna get the fenwick world class rod it's on sale $100 off.

I want to keep my budget for the reel around $200 so I'm trying to get a try hard one. I just can't decide between those two since they are the two best reels in that price range for weight
>>
>>906134

I believe I have some #15. I probably wouldn't do #10 because MH rod and I still want to rip through weeds and #15 isn't much heavier when casting yet feels significantly stronger. I mean most bass memecasters are MH or at least a M with a solid backbone and fast action. Those ratings aren't a standardized thing and rods like that specifically made for low-pro baitcasters all seem to follow that trend. The backbones aren't as thick as a lot of MH rods, but the faster action throughout the whole thing makes up for it.

I don't think they sell that combo in with a M rod. Or at least there was no option for it.

I think I will probably do 15lb. But the line weight doesn't affect casting nearly as much as on spinning reels so even with really light line it's still difficult to cast lightweight lures. They still need the weight to overcome the momentum of the spool and all that good shit. I hardly notice a difference in distance with the same 1/4oz baits on 20lb or 30lb braid. On spinning reels, the 30lb makes a huge difference compared to the 20lb.

where are you going for trout? micro egg patterns or white/black/olive wooly buggers around size 8 should clean up on stockers depending on the setup you've got.

wild trout this time of year are hard. something like a size 26-22 midge emerger is going to be the bulk of their diet rn and that is not an easy fly to fish if you're starting out. I'm way down south where its still warmish and the only hatch we've had in the last two weeks was a piss poor blue olive run. I asked last thread but you must have missed it. Thinking about taking my boat up there over the new year, planning on going to a nice, hopefully non packed spot to relax with a fire and not be surrounded by 50 other campers, a nearby boat ramp and plenty of firewood would be a plus. Any parks/places you could recommend mate? Anywhere to avoid?
>>
>>906474
in town will be a shit fest. 100's of speed boats racing up and down. There's plenty of small creeks around here that should be decent fishing, but might have campers nearby. Could always go into barmah. Unlike to see someone in there if you go deep enough.

BUt no. No fire. Haven't had a fire here in years so there's fuel everywhere, and with the abundance of rain and then the sudden stop, the place is ready to go up big time. So not the best time to ignore a fire ban.

Let me know if you come through. If you're happy to not know exactly where you'll be camping before you get here, we'll find you somewhere quiet.

Yeah, it's a popular skiing place during the holidays. Still plenty of places to fish. but it's a popular place to holiday for fishing as well haha.

Went out on sunday. There's a camp area about 10kms out of town. 10 or so camp sites set up there packed into maybe 1km of river bank. another 15km out, 3 blokes camping and fishing on the colligen. Poor bastards caght nothing.

I fucking fell out of the boat and ruined a $700 phone... but i got my lure back. Only to lose it the next day. But lost it after catching a nice cod, so all in all - worth it.

Deni, as in Deniliquin. Deny sounds like some gay yanky shit. Or are you not the SA dude I was talking about? And we're having some strange conversation where I'm talking about Australia, and you're swedish or somalian(Or are they the same, now?)

Yeah, rivers looking healthy. Dark, and a little fast, but much much better. Colligen was the same. Haven't been anywhere else yet.

Smallest cod I've seen is around 40, biggest around 60-65cm (give or take. It was about two boot lengths). Waded out to a big log and was precariously balanced ontop, so couldn't measure him more accurately haha.

That shit works. I always used to avoid it when I lived up north because I didn't think the fish would go for something so unnatural. Then when I moved down here, I heard the peacocks liked bright stuff so I started stocking up on firetiger and other obnoxious baits and the largemouth hit them like crazy. Especially in clear water the chartruese seems to catch a lot which seems counterintuitive.

So if you were like me and avoided bright baits, I highly reccommend trying then.

Idk. For murky water, I like dark stuff when it comes to soft baits and then I like flashy and noisy stuff like spinners or silver rattlers if I want something faster. And then chartruese and firetiger somehow tends to work well in either clear water or water with good visibility but brown stain from wood or whatever.

Sometimes chartruese and firetiger get hits in murky water too. If natural or dark colors aren't working, firetiger is great. I have one of those Scatter Raps in Size 8 I think and that one is firetiger and bass and fat Mayans straight attack that thing even though it is too big for most of them. One of my favorite lures.

That's why the 2-3 day shipping from most big companies in the US isn't worth it either it you live in the lower 48. Those big companies have multiple warehouse so even when I order shit being down here on the foreskin of the US, it still gets here within 3-4 business days.

Websites like the sportsman's guide offer a yearly membership and free shipping promotions they send you all the time.

I think tackle warehouse may do stuff like that too.

Wait for sales that offer free shipping over 100 dollars and bulk buy heavy shit.

I'm sure I have raped sportsman's guide on ammo doing that. I've ordered like 5000 rounds of 9mm ammo with a free shipping coupon o purchases over 150 dollars. Kek
>>
>>906628
Depends. Prices are normally the same in-store unless you find an online sale. And the $8 shipping on $20 worth of lures negates any savings you get online. But right now lots of websites are having free shipping and the selection is better than the stores so go for it. Just make sure you get the right sizes.

Amazon has some crazy pricing on single lures though. You can look up an $8 Rapala, and you will find stuff ranging from $4 with $6 for shipping to $9 with free shipping. There is some cool stuff on eBay but it's only really worth it if you buy it in lots and those lots are often like 20 of the exact same lure.

You only find stand up conservative tax paying US citizens at such places.

One time I was at this rave in Chicago and it must have been an old retail building where there were floor to ceiling glass windows along the whole front of the building but they had long since been boarded up. Anyway the cops came in through the main door and a ton of people just started kicking out the plywood and suddenly this building only really had 3 walls and a thousand people were bum rushing out these windows.

That's my story for the night.

Such is life. It hit me really hard, but my brother liked him a lot more and he was in jail(for the first time) when he died. So he was pretty crushed, not seeing your favorite person before they die or even being there to bury them is really rough, along with knowing its your fault you're not there. He almost lost his mind over that shit.

This actually happened a few years ago, just all the talk of death brought it back to the front of my head.

It went in the eye and came out of his forehead. I have hooked em in the eye before but never had it come back out.

He was kinda slow when I put him back in but eventually he darted into some weeds so hopefully he will make it. It wasn't bleeding or anything and it was a smaller hook (1/0 or 2/0) on those real thin 4" PowerBait worms so hopefully it didn't go too deep. I crushed the barb and it slid out easily too so I didn't do much damage taking it out.

Yeah my sister was the one who kept in touch with him the most and would always defend him even with his 6 month booze binges and then coming back for 3 months acting like everything was fine and disappearing again. I used to be close to him but probably by the time I was 18 or 19 I totally gave up.

Couple fucked up things happened at the end though. He tried to call me a bunch for the first time in years like 2-3 months before he died and I ignored all the phone calls. And then I went up to Chicago last yearbplanning to stay like 10 days and go to his funeral but went back to FL after like 4 days and didn't even go. And my little brother had no interest in going. It was all fucked up though because he was around when I was younger and then the drinking started getting bad when I was maybe 9 or 10 and they divorced and he left when I was 12. He stayed in the area but even when he was sober for periods of time he didn't make a whole lot of an effort to see his kids.

And the booze was what killed him too. He went back out drinking again after being sober a few months and fell down the stairs at his apartment in the middle of the night and they found his ass braindead the next morning. Kept him alive for a couple days and then pulled the plug.

>talk about fishin'
I do regret not hanging on to more of his old rods and reels. I have a few of his lures but there were some Abu spinning reels and St. Coix rods that I wouldn't mind having. Not to use but just to have.
>>
>>906905
I hooked a friend in the back real bad years back. We were on a little paddle boat in the middle of a lake and I went to rip a hook out of some lillies and it went flying past my head and lodged into is back. Took like half an hour of rowing to get back to shore and then had to drive to the hospital. I would probably just rip that bitch out now that I'm older.

And another friend I know had a hook go into his eye but he didn't lose it. I wasn't the cause of that one though nor was I there to witness it.
>>
>>906911
Yeah, I make sure to bring glasses and a hat when fishing with others now. I really like my eyes and would prefer to keep them. The sad thing is the kid wasn't even a fisherman. at any connection take the lighter line and subtract about 10-20% and thats what youre left with

you fishing lakes or moving water? if a lake or pond try to fish a feeder creek as cats like to bunch up in the channel when a rain surge starts pushing forage out into the main water. I imagine bass do the same.

river fishing in rain is not ideal, the flow usually cranks up and the fish either seek cover and don't feed or the water is too turbid for them to find the lures. cold weather is only going to compound that.

yea west coast is pretty shit for fishing unless you can go far offshore to chase some exotic shit. Even offshore, west coast is only around even to east coast.

At least california halibut tastes pretty good and can be caught from shore but they don't get as big as atlantic halibut and only grow about around as big as summer flounder on eastcoast anyway. They are also shit at fighting for their size.

According to people, they are there year round but there are less of them in winter and they might be more deeper in water in winter. However, while there are less of them in winter, the ones that you catch will be bigger. In summer, you can get more hook up but most will be dink
>>
>>907072
just find a baitcaster that's meant for big jerkbaits. every rod has a lure rating and a line rating. make sure everything roughly matches for optimal casting
>>

Anything around 8 ft + and can load the lure weight (5/8 oz) will work fine. Many people say that a medium / medium rod is optimal, and a lot of people get the shimano clarus.

I use an 8 ft shimano teramar mh / fast though since I also throw a few slightly heavier lures like bucktail, spoon, and swimbait sometimes as well. It does feels a bit too heavy for the sp minnow but i still can throw it fine. It's just a bit of extra work out but I don't mind. I use 15 or 20 lb braid since I don't want to risk losing a $20 lure .

What rod do you have. You shouldn't struggle that much. The lure is very well designed for casting, but heavy wind coming sideway or straight at you will still mess it up, as all crankbait. Use it for calm/no wind condition. I wouldn't cast it if wind is more than 10 kts. Also, there's a sweet spot for kasting it so that it fly "right" and fly far. You have to swing it back a certain distance and release with certain speed. Throwing it out harder and faster won't always make it fly farther if the lure tumble the wrong way. You have to experiment and test it out yourself to get the "feel" right.

Mostly wind conditions then probably. I have a couple surf rods. I can cast spoons or lead weights completely fine but anything less aerodynamic or dense is very hard to cast in the fairly consistent wind. The example I was using was extreme, bucktails/swimbaits are a lot easier to cast than the SP minnows, plugs, etc.

Lamiglas 9ft6 light power fast action (5/8oz lure max)
Fenwick HMX 9ft6 medium action (1oz max lure weight)
Penn prevail 9ft medium action (long casting style rod handle, 2oz max)
Ugly Stik 11ft medium-heavy (fucking hate this thing it weighs like 2.5lbs)

get a baitcaster. they are far better for casting lures into wind. you can get that real snappy cast that just doesn't work with a spinning reel.

I would say you are going to have the best luck with the fenwick hmx. You will never outcast spoon or bucktail with your sp minnow. I can cast an 3/8 kastmaster the same distance as the sp minnow with no wind. Fishes often come pretty close to shore though so you don't have to. Sp does catch fishes quite well though, especially when fishes are a bit finnicky when the water is too calm.

Mess around with your casting technique. For dense lures, you can cast whatever you want and the lure will fly. With hollow lure with weight shifting system like crankbait and plugs, you have to cast a certain way to get them going.

IDK - only fished spinning tackle before. I'd be reluctant to make my first caster a surf rig

Will have to spend more time with hit. DESU they just are not confidence lures because I have yet to hook into anything with one yet, but I know it can be done. The biggest surf perch are taken on sp minnows, I think the top 3 on record were all on sp minnow or live sand crab.

I've spent a lot more time throwing a carolina rig or high/low rig with soft plastics rigged like (I) from picrelated

I've hooked plenty of halibut with all sort of lures and my biggest and only legal halibut is on the sp minnow so I'm pretty confident on it. I've hooked plenty of big yfc, surfsmelt, and my only spotfit croaker ( which is also pretty big) with it too.

I also use the same carolina rig for soft plastic with 3 inch grub or the gulp saltwater sandworm or sand crabs. I just hate that you have to fish pretty slow with it but sometimes you just have to do it to get a bite.

Any national parks there still closed off from the flood or have they repaired all the damage?
>>

Gulp sandworms seem to be the best plastic option for where I am, but the 2 inch is what I usually use. Been trying to figure out how to rig the 6inch and avoid constant short strikes

I will have to start throwing lures before plastics rather than vice versa.

Just rip the 6 inches into 2-3 inches piece. They still work fine. I prefer that since the 6 inch are thicker and look juicier and also can hold in the "juice" in longer since it's thicker.

IDK I have both and the 2inch are thicker from what I can tell. The 6in looked decent on a shaky head

Don't forget
>bonito
>rockfish
>calico bass
also sturgeon but they are only in bays/river mouths.

Get a 9'6" salmon rod, it will be a little soft so it will load easier and being enough to get that line speed.
>>907088
Sounds like you might already have something like that then
>>907130
Look to walleye rigs and their multiple hooks

Not sure. Havent been to barmah in awhile. You can get in anyway. I'm sure it'll be open, if for no other reason than access for fires.

Thanks. I guess im heading to the reservoir then. Was going to go to the river but fishing river in heavy rain does sound pretty dumb. The cape fear is pretty dark muddy water too.
