Tries soft plastics for the first time. Pretty nice. Definitely a lot more technique going into it than I'm used to.

But apparently the best cod catcher in my area swears by them. So gonna give em a good going this weekend.

Also, found a good option for flicking big lures. $160 Willsons Magnum. Much cheaper than the Venom and the local tackleshop owner reckons they'e grouse.

the "diawa" sp minnows cast further than the Lc's. the lc flash minnows cast okay, for a 5/8th lure but suck when the wind is up.

12lb mono, 2500-3000 spinner, 7'5"-9' ml rod, rip and pause in the backs of the waves. some guys add a tiny rubber core to gain a little more distance and depth when the waves and winds are up. great lures but a small window of usage for surf applications. they work great in shallow bay flats and estuary areas.

Super thick (50 yard) fog this morning. Trout followed my power nymph in but didn't bite. Really looks beautiful out here with this fog.

Ive only just begun fishing with them a couple of weeks ago, but there's a lot of possibilites with them. They come in 10g-50g weights normally, some float, some sink between 10-50cm down, and some sink immediately so you can fish with small lures/flies at all depths and casting distances.

Other time for some reason, just before i let go of the line during a cast, something wasnt right and the 1.5oz jig went flying. Luckily it flew far out into the sea, instead of someone's car or head.

I hate net guys, a lot of the beaches i fish are occasinally netted up, and it cockblocks me from even trying to fish.
Plus its the laziest way to fish.

For some reason tho, i never lose a lot of line when i lose a lure in a snag. It always basically breaks at the knot (the knot doesnt fail, it just breaks at that point)

Anyone ever fish using otters?

Im a UK fag that lives on a farm.

Last night I heard splashing and went down to the riverside, found two otters with a salmon.

Kicked the otter away, left with a 7 1/2lb salmon.

After looking online, apparently people have tamed them to use for fishing. Anyone know how I would do this?

My camera was in my pocket. WHilst retrieving a snagged lure on the weekend, the seat broke and my testicles went flying into the the edge of th boat. The water was about to rush over the side, so i made the decision to launch myself in.

RIP phone.

But I got my lure back.

I bought a few stumpjumpers, an soft plastic, an Oar-Gee 75mm plow, a spinnerbait, two other bibbed divers that I can't recall the brand of (maybe old timer, or cod mate or old cod?) and some 50lb braid.

And pic related is instock later this week. So gonna grab one or two of these.

thats a older drop reel. it shows depth range, hi low gearing modes. jigging modes ect..serious bling on a boat if youre so inclined. the newer models cost a whole lot more. well over $1000 for the reels and the rods are very specialized with different flexes to use for the game sought and type of fishing youre doing.

At the moment I just use that lews MH and a "MH" (weight rating is like 1/2-1 1/2oz) Abu veritas top water rod. I don't really throw big swimbaits ever, so I don't have a dedicated swimbait rod.

Ehh, I have never had a problem with that. You just need to get used to it. It takes a lot less pressure to set hooks and get movement out of the lure but after using it awhile it will seem natural.

Is 10lb braid too weak for general freshwater use? Just bought braid for the first time and 10lb braid seems to break far more easily than 10lb mono. Oh the bright side, it has a smaller diameter than dental floss. Very thin stuff.

I'm a big fan of 10lb braid. I have hauled in some big sneks on it and if anything it seems stronger than 10lb mono because the knots don't create nearly as much of a weak spot on braid. Plus it doesn't degrade like mono where 10lb becomes 6lb after a couple trips.

Make sure you don't have any messed up guides on the rod or something making the line weak. Also git gud at the Palomar knot.

Mono is worse than braid when it comes to overspooling reels. Mono will jump off and cause a giant mess. You just have to be careful not to overfill it.

Seems to depend on the reel as well. Shimano reels all have that little bevel on the top of the spool so you can't go super close to the edge but most of my other reels are filled pretty damn full where mono would be coming off in coils and I haven't had any issues.

Try it out. My President LE is a little faster than my other spinning reels and I like it now that I'm used to it. It's easier to retrieve stuff slow with a fast reel than retrieve baits fast on a slow reel.

That Lew's is 7.1:1 while the other memes are 6.4 so that will be cool.

Also remember that 6.4 on a baitcaster is different than a spinning reel since spinning reels typically have larger spools so a 6.4:1 spinning reel should retrieve faster than a 6.4:1 baitcaster.

Was a pretty day when the sky opened up.

Water level was up around my local pond, especially the creek that leads out.

But no fish, even went with a lil grub with a twisty tail and didn't get much.

How important is water clarity? Its like a trade off for fishing high waters it seems.

I targeted every pool that was along the creek and even let it drift with the current.

Like if the wind is blowing towards me and I have to pop a lure out of the water a few feet from shore to get it over weeds, the line can get wrapped around the top guide and I have to tilt it down and shake it to get it straight again. So I got my first brown trout ever and first brown on fly today. He was on a size 20 pheasant tail rigged the following way

They had some 110yd spools of #14 I think at this walmart on a random clearance shelf for like $7 and I was thinking about trying it out. I doubt it is still there but that could be cool on that new Memecaster.

I also wanted to try that SpiderWire InvisiBraid but it is something like $40 for a 300yd spool. And now I'm not sure if I would trust it after running regular StealthBraid on other rods. I would rather drop the money on some of the more expensive PowerPro. I still might put that #40 SuperSlick on the memecaster but I'll probably just do #15.

Fireline is superior in abrasion resistance and won't break the second it touches a rock like power pro, I've lost several fish on power pro that have gone near the pier pilings. I wish I had a microscope and could see a real cross section of the different types of line. The only advantage SpiderWire Stealth Braid has is it seems to be a tiny bit smoother and more flexible (at least more flexible when new, PowerPro softens up once you use it a bit) but for the amount that it frays on me I will gladly take PowerPro over it especially considering they are about the same price.

Tying a leader takes about 3 minutes, buying one costs 3 dollars or more, and that's just cost
Tapered leaders are also not as good at turning over flies, a tied leader can be made as aggressive or as delicate as you want. A tapered leader is universal but it's too standard. It's not aggressive enough for bulky streamers but too aggressive for delicate dries.
It's worth 5 minutes imo

The Berkley Lighting Rod Shock has been my favorite at that price, and for $10-$20 more there are tons of rods with much better sensitivity and action like the Fenwick Eagle and Shimano Sellus and even some store brand stuff.

The Ugly Stiks just aren't sensitive enough for me. You need a heavier one to effectively cast heavier spinnerbaits or jigs and then those will be all thick and weigh a ton. And then if you are working finesse lures, it's much more difficult to get the little twitches and stuff down with such a slow rod.

I used to use Ugly Stiks a ton too and still have 3 of them but I don't think I will ever buy another one.

Frustrating as fuck. You can hear/feel the knot during cast as it goes through the guides. I first had it happen on a reel that may have been overloaded so I cut a bunch off but have gotten them on virtually all my reels (spinning) at one time or another. Thought maybe too loosely retrieved on the spool possibly but I typically keep the line pretty tight on retrieve without a strike.
I really think it's inherent to braid and caused by the line twisting or somehow grabbing line off the spool.
Fairly easy to untangle usually but a PITA especially if there's a school and all I want to do is cast or in the dark.

I like the winter here. I lived in Chicago for 23 years and that blows.

Summer can be worse up there than it is here. It's humid during the summer, especially in the morning, but the breeze picks up off the ocean by 9am so the humidity isn't bad with a steady 10-15mph wind. In the north, there are only a handful of days a year with better weather than you get in the summer here. And winter is perfect because it sunny and mid-high 70s daily with very little rain.

I usually do a slow roll. Sometimes I'll add a very light pulsing action with the rod tip but that's more of a habit than an actual technique. The smallest size panther martin is my favorite spinner. Smaller than the smallest mepps and the blade spins even at the slowest speed. My go-to for river & creek trout.

Apparently surf perch will bite on a rooster tail, I want to try it. I have a ton of inline components, I just need to get some paint - I think oranges and reds are best for surfperch since they love sandcrabs (pic related)

Idk, Musky Hunters or whatever are the biggest that Mepps makes. I believe Blue Fox has some that are slightly heavier. The largest Mepps Agila is the #5 which is 1/2oz and there is a #6 Blue Fox which is something like 5/8oz and they are a little shorter in length plus no dressed tail so they seem to cast a little farther.

There might be larger Blue Fox Vibrax too.

Look up the flying C. They make them in 5/8 oz and 7/8 oz. They have a rubber skirt on the body and come in pink, orange, yellow, and chartreuse, with silver, gold, pink, or chartreuse blades and maybe some other colors. People around here use them to catch salmon in the Carqinez Strait and delta.

I beleve I have the PowerBait Ripple Shads in a real small size (1.5"?) in firetiger and a natural silver and black wirh gold flakes. Then I have some other PowerBait 3" shads but those are weighted with the hook in them like Storms.

I think those larger white Gulp ones are the exact same Ripple Shad design just made from the Gulp material instead of the PB plastic and scent.
