First for the Midwest.

I'm pretty sure my state is WAY to far north for sea stripper to swim up here.

do you have stripers in your lakes?
hybrids are fun to catch

need to buy a new rod since my other shit got stolen, should i go with a st croix, premier, mojo inshore or tidemaster inshore

all rods would be 7 ft or 7 ft 6 and about the same specifications ( the tidemaster and mojo inshore being a bit beefier)

Midwest. The only thing close to strippers we have are hybrids and those are stocked by the DNR, including in the Mississippi. Consider the distance from the coast. I don't know where Merrimack is but I'm willing to bet it's closer to the ocean than where I live.

>>1054312
Yeah, didn't realize that until today. I thought strippers were coastal only. Apparently the lake on the edge of the city is stocked with them. That said, I've never caught anything there and it's heavily fished.
>>
>>1054301
>>1054309
Striper used to swim the St. Lawrence until they were extirpated in the 1960s. They were recently reintroduced though.
>>
>>1054315

well no shit they don't move that far inland, has nothing to do with north though
>>
>>1054319
Mississippi river dumps out into the Gulf of Mexico. So if stripper of any kind were to somehow make it up into my rivers, it'd come from the Gulf. Which is to the South.

You realize that North =/= New England right?
>>
>>1054296

these last few fish have been much better looking than that ugly, smelly, poor, brown fish from a few threads ago
>>
>>1054320
>You realize that North =/= New England right?

Than you should have been more clear if you're using north as a relative term.
>>
>>1054317
Stripers occurred naturally in the Mississippi River as far north as Rock Island IL, prior to all the hydroelectric dams going up. The river still has them but I don't know if they're stocked or still naturally occurring. I do know they breed in the river.

The Missouri River still has them, naturally, all the way from its confluence with the Mississippi to at least Bismarck ND. Table Rock and Bull Shoals have naturally occurring populations as well (as well as both naturally occurring and introduced hybrids and naturally occurring white bass).

you have a boat or a float?
find on finder and vertical jig them.
trolling alabama rigs is the easiest way to find where the schools are. find out what the forage fish is in that lake.
you can also try liver or chunked baits from the bank along with throwing swimbaits and spoons.

Got this 25" red this morning. Had to reelly tighten the drag as it wanted to go to the oysters

I know here in SC they get really big in the lakes, pretty sure they got stuck in there when they built the dam.
>>
so today I went out to a lake nearby. not even five minutes after I got there a huge white truck pulls in and starts taking pictures of my license plate and tells me that the lake is some sort of private public works area and wants to take my picture with all my gear. he takes down my name and number, tells me that I will probably be getting a ticket for fishing without permission and might even get criminal trespassing tacked on. do I have any legal recourse against this? there were no obvious signs that this area was private, as in none of those "no trespassing" or "no fishing" signs, not even a gate that I had to drive through. desu it seemed almost a little like entrapment with how quickly someone was there to bust me. I found the lake on Fishbrain and there were multiple fishing reports on the place online. it all seemed a little odd to me so I wanna know what /fish/ thinks

i guess i'll take a ride out that way sometime soon. i haven't yet actually gotten the ticket, so if i get a call or ticket in the mail i'll probably go ahead and head out there to see if i can gather some proof that there wasn't anything to tell me i was trespassing. i was super polite to the guy (as anybody should be when caught on private property, accidental or otherwise), so still hopeful it just blows over. got to keep my gear so that's a good sign

When rain pours and water levels go up do fish kick into road-trip mode?

Sometimes I find it weird how there's fish above some riffle area that is way to shallow, yet again fish would have to put a lot of effort into swimming up it at those high flows. I figure it's no match for them though.

I ask this cause I hear smaller fish get flushed down on high flows

Okay im going fishing at north carolina on the ocean side and was wonder whats a good setup for fishing in saltwater there. Also there is a pond there with carp, catfish crappie and some othet fish what would be best for both salt water and fresh water fishing. Any tips on salt water fish?
>>
>>1054518
Surf fishing or pier fishing?
>>
>>1054507
Well it's set depending on what your application calls for. The point generally is so line will come off your reel instead of it breaking. The only time drag should be maxed is if you're pitching into VERY thick heavy cover with strong braid like 65-80lbs test. This is because if you land an 8lbs bass you might have to rip her ass through 10lbs of brush so your drag needs to be 15lbs or higher and the line needs to be heavy so it doesn't get frayed and snaps from rubbing brush.
Outside of this just set your drag to what you can pull moderately with your hand which will probably be 5lbs-7lbs or so.
>>
>>1054507
It lets the fish run so it doesn't snap your line. It + your rod is a shock absorber. How you set it depends on the line and type of hook you're using. The drag needs to be light enough to not snap your line or bend out your hook. A good rule of thumb is tight enough that it's not hard but not easy to pull out with your hand.
>>
>>1054296
What's a good fluoro for leader material?

I'm using Berkeley Vanish and it's garbo. Cost me a chatterbait and a Yo-Zuri lipless.
>>
>>1054528
Why is it snapping? Abrasion, drag too high, poor quality? I get you called it garbo, but are you absolutely sure there's nothing you did? Did it do a clean snap or did your knot come undone?
>>
>>1054315
That is an absurdly big rod
>>
>>1054527
my rule of thumb is about 1/3 the breaking strain of the line. if i need to i can always turn it up, but its hard to turn it down in a pinch
>>
>>1054518
Carolina rigging cut bait like finger mullet or using fresh shrimp. Also jigging pink and chartreuse(electric chicken) pattern plastics works well. Gotcha plugs work extremely well for the blues in the surf. If you want to run a fly rod then pack an 8wt and run electric chicken pattern clousers and decievers. Black and orange is a good color combo for the murkier waters.

The speckled trout and the bluefish are really running strong out here so you'll have a good time.
>>
>>1054528
Vanish is shit. Get some seaguar invizx or red label
>>
>>1054509

If on the shore, then you try to find a place where fish might be located, cast out, and wait about 15 minutes. If you don't get any bites, real in and repeat.

If you're in a boat, then you lower it to the desired depth and drift along in areas where fish are until you find them.

In the event of a bite- with that kind of hook- you let the fish run a bit, then start to steadily reel in. Do not jerk or sweep your rod in an attempt to set the hook.

The sliding weight and beads are not meant to attract fish. The weight slides freely up and down the line so when a fish takes the hook, it keeps pulling the line through and doesn't feel the weight as easily. The beads keep the weight from bumping into the knot/swivel, which can weaken it or get wedged into the weight hole and prevent it from sliding. The bead on the other end keeps it from impacting the eye of your rod and potentially damaging it.
>>
>put braid on my memecaster
>never birds nests

Now I understand why people hate mono on them.
>>
>>1054518
I also tend to run when i'm fishing the pier with conventional gear using about 20 or 30lb test line with wire leaders. Bite tippets help in the surf if you are using a fly rod and I recommend it at times.

I'm not saying he didn't have a leg to stand on, and I'm not sure how closely you've worked government employees, but there is always that guy who is low man on the totem pole and whose opinion means fuckall. That guy is always looking for any opportunity to pretend he has some smidgen of authority. You very well may have met that asshole and have nothing to worry about.

At the very least if there were no signs, no gate, no boundary markers or whatever to distinguish that you were on a private drive/property and not some dirt road you happened to find a lake on you can point that out and argue there was no intent to commit an act of trespassing. That you merely did not realize, due to a lack of signage and such, that the property was not public. "Ignorance is no excuse of the law" but it should fetch you some leniency if anything were to even ever come of this. Pretty sure if anything did the only thing that'd happen is they'd issue a trespass order against you. Only if you violated that order would any real trouble come your way.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (of Greater Chicago?) appears to be or have been the owner. A quick google search will turn up their dot org and contact information. That'd be where I'd start to inquire about the legality of fishing there. Worst they can do is say "no." If that happens I'd suggest they or their legal team contact findlakes, myhikemaps, and the hundreds of other dot coms dedicated to hunting/fishing/etc asking that their listing be removed or noted as private property, or at least that they have that asshole in the truck go back out there to stake some signs. Otherwise you won't be the last person out there. Or don't tell them. Sounds like there's a good chance it's their own fault. As long as they're not railroading people through the legal system as some kind of racket then its probably just simple stupidity. Let it keep happening til they get their head out of their ass.

I tried to tell the guy that everything I found online pointed towards it being public land, as all I had was a name of a lake and not anything else. He said that this happens all the time so I don't see why they haven't done anything to try to get the lakes removed from places like Fishbrain. As someone who has used resources like Google Earth just to find water near me, I know what to look for when trying to determine whether a place is public or private, and I've never had a problem like this until today. If nothing else, I've become more convinced that if a ticket shows up in my mailbox, I'll take some sort of legal recourse if only because I don't want this to happen to anyone else that just wants to find a decent spot to fish
>>
>>1054507
>>1054549
Also remember that if you use braid, you should set the drag lower than you would for mono of equal lb rating because braid doesn't stretch much so there is less force absorbance by stretch.

Some fish species also have soft mouth that you wouldn't want to set super high drag or you will rip the hook out of the fish's mouth
>>
>>1054376
In the DMV? I catch them at Mallows and the Mattawoman Creek on the Maryland side of the Potomac. Target lily pads and other vegetation near the shore and over soft, silty/muddy bottoms. Usually no deeper than eight or so feet of water.
When they have their young still they seem to keep under/in vegetation on large flats and close to shore, otherwise I find them slow rolling small baits a few feet out. I catch most of mine on small lures like jig spinners and little squarebills but when the time of year is right they'll smack the snot out of a frog.

It's usually easy to figure out if you've hooked one, it'll look like somebody squeezed a sponge under the water because a quick mass of bubbles will surface. I guess they release the air in their labyrinth organ when hooked. One of the first things they'll do if they don't bolt right away is try to dig down into the soft bottom. I don't use steel leader in open water but I do use lures that provide some gap between the hook(s) and line to keep teeth from cutting the line. For frogs I definitely suggest strong braid, especially if you're throwing into the pockets of dense vegetation which is often where you'll find them right now. Youtube search the BangkokHooker guy's video on his snakehead knot too, really good for frogs and reinforcing where the line meets the lure.

we use braid when jigging I max the drags all the time. would rather bend out a 4x or rip a lip than lose 150yds of line and a $20 jig. the flex of the jigging rods themselves absorb most of the stress and the max drags make so that you cant get rocked as fast.

Flies, especially the Styrofoam ones, are best for panfish imo.

For panfish you want it in their face for a long time, be it a jig on the bottom or a floaty thing on the top.

Jig spinners with 1/16 oz heads and 2" soft plastics. I like Mr Crappie jig heads and his Joker soft baits. The Lightning Shad baits are super slim profIle and great when the dinks are biting since they're more likely to get the hook and not just tug the tail. The snakehead here are ecstatic to forage on little fish and I catch them on the same exact setup.

Also you can nix the spinner and use a slip float, adjusting the depth til you find the fish. Pretty common technique for crappie.
>>
>>1054570
>>1054592
Also make you worms last longer - just put a tiny piece of worm on the hook with the soft plastic so it adds some scent. Called "tipping the hook." A small piece of shrimp or waxworm is common for crappie, waxies especially improve the crappie bite.
>>
>>1054563

Fished that boat launch at the end of island until sun down. Then went to Oceana pier until midnight then woke up and fished the surf behind Windjammer inn dieing sunrise. Carolina rigged live shrimp and cut pinfish.

At one point I accidentally hooked up one of the big bullsharks that was circling the peir as some guys were cleaning a crap load of pinfish/whitings but it cut me off pretty quick.

Nobody else was catching anything worthwhile either though, so I don't feel THAT bad.
>>

Snails stay on the hook forever. Also try smaller hooks. I never go larger than a size 8 and prefer size 12 or smaller.

November you actually wanna try a bit more inland. Hit the Neuse river or the Pamlico river. You'll start hitting the reds as they're spawning there. I've had my best luck in the fall on those two spots. I tend to fish Fort Macon beach and the Oceanana pier more often in the summer months. The intercoastal is also pretty productive in the fall like Swansboro and Cape Carteret area.
>>
>>1054570
Rooster tails. 1/16th ounce.
White or black, depending on the conditions (White for day, black for evening and/or night). Both work really well, and you can get them at Walmart for cheap.
When nothing else works, white is what I tie on, and I always have spares in my tackle box.

If you use T-Rigs, Jigs, Frogs Chatterbaits, Buzzbaits, or Spinnerbaits you'll get use out of a MH
>>
>>1054698
>T-Rigs, Jigs
I use 1/4oz max
>Frogs
I don't have access to places that are matted with pads and reeds
>Chatterbaits
could just use 1/4oz
>Buzzbaits, or Spinnerbaits
Wouldn't feel right about buying a rod just to use those and again I could just use smaller ones.

My problem I guess is that all the ponds are very man made and manicured, and the lakes that I can get bank access to also lack structure. If I had a kayak I'd totally be more on board with it.

Would I really benefit from having 1/4oz lures on a MH?
>>
>>1054698
at the 30 lb range you are only putting 10 pounds of pressure. my biggest reel- a penn 68 long beach- is renound for having low power drags but even i have not needed all of it with #50 mono

I haven't noticed any real difference in casting distance with 1/4oz + plastic. I actually like throwing that more on the MH. I go down to a 1/8oz on the MH all the time, but there's definitely a noticeable difference then.

Either way it's not so much about casting distance as it is getting easier hooksets. Especially on the end of long cast and when using big hooks like on jigs and chattermemes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you can't do any of that with a medium rod, its just easier to get solid hooksets and actually catch the fish with a MH. I have a M rod that I use for open water t-rigs, but I only use thin wire hooks.

The downside is if you like the fighting part of catchin a fish, a MH will feel overpowered. Moreso if you mostly catch >3lb fish.

I don't care so much about the fight as I do about getting the fish to me and then letting it go. That's why I prefer the MH.

Also, you should try frogs over open water around shade lines or just when the fish are shallow. Shit can be killer.

TL;DR you'll definitely get use out of the MH, but there's nothing wrong with a medium if you don't wanna risk not liking a heavier rod.

>>1054700
I've bent out Gamakatsus with 20lb braid and ~5lbs of drag. Sometimes fishes just make it to where they have good leverage and bend the hook. Pic related was the fish, idk where the picture of the hook I took went.

My dad gave me this old rod. He found it on the side of the road in a case about 15 years ago. It's a Daiwa Heartlands 6'5" trolling rod. I've tried to find info on it online but I can't. Anyway I'm pretty sure it's NOT a cheap rod. I'm going to put a traditional round memecaster on it.
>>
>>1054721
Alright you made me reconsider. Also by getting a MH I feel that I can go up to 3/8oz Texas rigs and jigs for the fall and dead of winter. Also I've heard that MH are preferable for Carolina rigs so I can try those out.

I bought all this shit to try and catch some trout with my spinning rods in a trip to Colorado. I've got some small inline spinners, size 8 egg hooks, size 10 egg hooks, size 12 trebles, egg sinkers, small swivels, beads, small cranks, bubble floats, power bait, power bait dip, 2 lb fluorocarbon leader, and some dry flys and nymphs.

Any advice on how I should fish this shit or anything else recommended? I'm hoping to do lake and river fishing (from the shore). I'm thinking about getting some mouse tails and small jigheads too.

I'm really wanting to try the nymphs in the river, and my plan is to rig mainline (10 lb braid and 6 lb fluoro on each rod respectively) with a bubble float filled about halfway with water, onto a swivel, then about 3 to 6 feet of fluoro leader, then the fly. For the nymphs I may add a small split shot a couple feet from the top of the leader. And my plan is to cast upstream and let the fly drift. Would that work?
>>
>>1054730
please crush your barbs. it adds only a few seconds to when you tie on the lure, and it makes it a lot easier on the fish if you decide to let it go.
>>
>>1054731
I never crush barbs. Is this something specifically for trout? Because bass don't get too torn up from barbs most of the time. I'm hoping to just catch my limit to eat, but if the fishing is good I might do c&r.
>>
>>1054724
Just my 2¢ on what rod to look for is something 7+ feet and on the slower side of fast action. That helps out quite a bit with lighter lures. It will probably take some getting use to throwing 1/8oz lures because you won't feel the rod load up as much, and the reel will be a little more backlash happy, but it's not hard after a little practice. 1/4oz + bulkier plastic (flukes, craws, ect) seem to be the sweet spot for most of my MHs.

imo a MH with 20lb or 30lb is one of the more versatile setups for bass. You can go pretty light once you get your thumb trained, and you can also go up to 3/4oz on most rods.

What setups were you looking at?
>>
>>1054738
I was thinking about getting a No. 8 Blackout 7' with an Origin C. I don't know if the Origin C is that good, but I figure for $100 it's got memes that more expensive reels have.
>>
>>1054734
its good for any fish, and with bass crushing the barb can actually help penetrate the bone. but trout mouths get torn up really easily, so it is a good idea to crush them. i crush any barb on any hook i for any fish i dont intend to keep. usually ill stay barbed if im fishing for cobia/mackerel/flounder/bluegill since im going to probably keep and eat it, but even then i sometimes crush them.
>>
>>1054734
>Because bass don't get too torn up from barbs
I can easily count on all my fingers and toes the number of bass I've released with evidence of being hooked previously. Played right a debarbed hook fairly minimally increases your chance of losing a fish but it increases the ease of unhooking drastically which is mighty important for catch and release.

Actually one company I have mad respect for is Pradco-Rebel for their Bluegill squarebill cranks. They were initially marketed toward youngsters with their barbless trebles but they're fantastic little shallow cranks in some great patterns. I've had a lot of success with them.

Barbless is also nice with soft mouthed fish like crappie. Probably not as important as playing them properly but it really helps keep from tearing them up when it comes time to unhook.

When it comes to the Colorado blades on our jig spinners my pops pretty much never uses standard nickel. Always gold or copper and preferably hammered/diamond. I admit he's passed tge superstition on to me and I prefer those as well but some colors, like white or glimmer blue, I think look more proper or natural with nickel. I don't fish a lot of spoons either though. I like nickel or gold Silver Buddy vibe baits and for spoons specifically I lean toward the classics like the red and white daredevils or a good old five of diamonds.

You can scale or score it a little to put out more scent. You can trim any spines ro make it a bit easier to swallow in one gulp. Also when hooking it, you only need to catch a corner. Leave as much of the hook exposed as possible.
>>
>>1054693
Check your local laws on that, because governments get REALLY twitchy about grass carp.
Sometimes grass carp need to be registered to a certain pond and the owner could face fines if his allotted number of grass carp aren't found in his pond, so fishing and private possession of them is prohibited.
Sometimes they allow you to fish for them but you're not allowed to throw them back, like snakeheads.
Other times they just see it as a "trash fish" and nobody cares.

If you ARE allowed to fish for them, they're pretty easy to catch-as long as you remember that they're vegetarians. Once of the best ways to catch them is with banana peels. Throw a chunk of banana peel onto a big enough hook and you'll have fun
>>
>>1054814
Dark lures that have a good clear silhouette.
Things that don't rely solely on appearance, like rattletraps and lipped crankbaits with rattles in them.
Bait that stinks, especially for catfish.

Yes there are a few that are alright. IIRC the ugly stik combo isn't half bad. However Bass Pro will have a stupidly better selection if you want to build your own setup instead of buying a combo.

This one? I don't think I'm looking for anything crazy at the moment. I would get something much nicer if I enjoyed it, but I've never been fishing before so this would be sort of a test run.
>>
>>1055078
Yeah. It's an alright combo and a decent rod alone can easily be the price of the combo. Spinning reels are also the best unless you want to learn how to use a bait-caster.

If you're starting fresh I recommend going with the good ol' Mk I hook and bobber with some decent mono line. Then get some live worms (you can buy or dig for them) and start catching panfish.
>>
>>1055088

>walmart worms
If your walmart has a fishing section, I can almost guarantee that they sell worms there. I have yet to find a walmart that does not.

>artificial lures
They work and they can work great. But you need to know how to use them and by your own admission, you're a newbie. So you won't know how to use them and you haven't decided if fishing is for you. So rather than toss cash after lures that you don't know how to use and that cost more money, just go with the simple bobber, hook, and worms until you've made up your mind. Oh, and I'd go with the smaller hooks. Nothing larger than a size #1/0.
>>
>>1055069

It's not where you buy or how much you pay. It's all about the gear itself. I'm always raving about the Shimano IX reels because even though they cost just 10 to 15 bucks at any big box store, theyre tough as nails reels that can survive salt water and a variety of fishing techniques. I use them on everything from trout in park ponds to redfish in the gulf.

Indeed. I live in Maryland but I try to get up there a few times a year to fish the Juniata, Shawnee and especially Raystown which is the only place I get to break out my deep diving crankbait rod. By far one of my favorite bodies of water.

I've fished Little Seneca Lake in Black Hill Park up near Germantown, Maryland a few times before I put the deep diving setup together. I could go back and use it there but that place gets crowded in the summer. Lots of fishing pressure along with yakkers, paddle boats, canoe rentals and so on. Makes it hard to enjoy when clueless people are paddling right over your line or cutting you off any time you try to move. Plus last I was up there they were building a huge shoping center and tearing up swathes of old farmland to throw up another suburban expanse. It's probably an aquatic landfill by now, sadly.

What sort of rod + reel + pound test should I use to go for striper off of a pier?
>>
>>1055378
As far as strength yes. It will be MINORLY worse on sensitivity provided they're even remotely close on price, but still totally fishable (unlike a telescoping rod).

>>1055375
I haven't found one yet that was built worth a shit. The guides break, they're mostly fiberglass so they have zero action and sensitivity, they either get stuck fully extended or collapse in the middle of fishing, lining up the guides is a giant pain in the ass, and the reel seats have always been fragile. They also literally fall apart after a few days' use.
>>
>>1055384
something 7-9 feet long with a good back bone to throw 4+ oz and a big reel that holds a minimum of 250 yards of 20 pound test mono, and #50 braid
>>
>>1055391
That's pretty srs stuff my man
>>
>>1055392
Striped bass is usually between 8 and 40 lbs. 20 lbs test at a minimum sounds like a good idea to me.

Ever try Lake Marburg? Plenty of space for a deep diving crankbait. The fishing isn't great, I'll be honest, but the fish that you pull out will certainly be large.

t. Lives 10 minutes from there
>>
>>1055264
It was from the last time. I'm thinking about renting a yak again but it depends on if I stay another night. I saw some reds tailing but they didn't want a gulp shrimp, swimbait, or spoon. Just got some live shrimps and I'm gonna try to catch something.

>>1055428
Mepps spinner with a dressed hook in a size that your rod can throw.
Easy to fish, widely available, relatively inexpensive and works well.
>>
Will high-vis yellow line spook fish or not? What is it used for.
>>
>>1055440
Depends on the fish, the water, and the presentation.

Generally most game fish give no fucks about line color, but heavily pressured fish or fish in extremely clear, shallow water (like wild trout) can be line shy.
>>
>>1055443
Well what if I just use a florocarbon leader then?
>>
>>1055407
Huh, I'd never heard of it, granted there are quite a bunch in PA I just haven't gotten to check out yet, all significantly larger than most of the freshwater near me. Lake Galitzen is another I've been told to investigate. But I might be able to take a day or weekend trip to Marburg, it's a little under two hours from home. I buy an annual out-of-state license for PA just about every year. Always looking for new waters to get my money's worth.

It's a big fish lake. Close to 1,500 acres I think and gets to about 110 feet deep. Be wary of toothy fish like pike, musky, walleye, and bowfin in there though if you decide to make the trip. The first three are out in cold water and the bowfin come up in June to spawn

I caught a channel cat today and it was the first time I caught a catfish since I was a kid. I didn't really know how to hold it so I tried gripping it by the mouth like people do with Bass and I sorely fucking regreted it.
>>
>>1055448
I'm an apex predator in a world where most, but not all, of us no longer need to be one. We're all "civilized" now. My grandfather used to hunt and fish for food but he had seven mouths to feed including himself, my grandmother, their children, and a runaway cousin that stayed with them. Tackle and a box of birdshot or slugs was a lot cheaper than the grocery store.

I admittedly mostly catch and release, and oddly enough also maintain a little home aquarium, but I find no internal struggles with my hobbies. I do go to lengths to ensure the health of the fish from debarbing hooks, to wetting my hands before handling a catch, never letting them hit the shore or flop into the boat, using adequate tackle... I wouldn't say that's motivated by guilt of any kind however, I just think it's proper ethics/sportsmanship.
>>
>>1055448
Sometimes.

If I catch a nice game fish and I have to cut the line because it swallowed the hook or if I cause it significant harm in any other way then I pretty much consider it a bad catch.
>>
>>1055454
>Be wary of toothy fish
I welcome anything happy to hit my lures. I'm used to snakeheads in the Potomac and plenty of pickerel out of St. Mary's Lake. My first tiger muskie was actually out of Raystown last year, beautiful fish. If I make it up there soon I look forward to the toothy buggers.

>>1055460
I usually lip'em and support the belly with my off hand but the palm-side of my digits are pretty tough. Usually end up with a more extreme case of bass thumb. The fuckers seem to know when you're gonna let then go and decide to clamp down at the list second. Almost always ends up drawing a little blood from the top of my thumb. I've never minded it much though. If the noodlers can cram an arm down the big ones I can manage a thumb getting a little roughed up.

I agree. Seems many people are busier growing their e-penis than appreciating others' good catch.

>>1055448
Yes and no. Those pure, holier than thou C&R fishermen are inflicting pain/discomfort (depending on what article you read) and involuntary death to fish for their own amusement. That is pretty damn close to the very definition of animal abuse.
As long as you eat what you catch I really don't see a problem. Rod-caught fish is close to the most humane way of providing food (same for with hunting) - living free as intended for the most of your life then get hooked and having a few minutes of being stressed out before der ewige ruhe.
If you wanna eat living things (inb4 some hippie vegetarian comment) you gotta accept some suffering and death.
Luckily I don't have to worry about those qualms as I never catch anything anyway...

To that anon a couple threads back who insisted that circle hooks were so ubiquitious that you could find them anywhere, I invite you to visit southeastern New Mexico.

The Roswell Walmart didn't have them. The local sporting goods shop didn't have them. Drove 30 min south to a park/stocked lake and none of the shops had them. Just abberdeen, bait holder, kahle, and salmon egg hooks.

I hooked into this massive pike (twice) today on my aglia #2 and both times it got off close to shore. Thing was pulling drag like mad too even after I tightened it, so sad I lost it...

Yeah. We were there because my wife has always wanted to do the alien festival. We've been doing a lot of road tripping and I decided to make a challenge out of catching a fish in every state.

>>1055756

Everything was geared towards bass and trout. Which is crazy since 3 out of the 4 closest bodies of water (unless you drive 80 miles to a reservoir) are stocked throughout the spring and summer with channel catfish.

And the few bass I did catch were between 12 and 20 inches, which impressed the locals. Many of whom had never seen someone use a cast net to catch shiners...

Just glad to be in Texas. I've already been fishing 4 times in the past week to cheer myself up.

Mallows was in rare form today. Bass boats ignoring the no wake zone. Two girls on SUP boards, who were mostly out of way, but seemed attention seeking. The louder of the two, in the more revealing attire of course, eventually took an unintentional dip which made for some brief entertainment. The toolbag with them on some kind of pedal power yak never once dropped eithe of the two line's he had in the water but made a point of getting in the way everywhere he went. He cut off a couple guys in a bass boat from casting before darting directly at us and the old pilings we were targeting. I almost wasn't angry about that because he slower down against a piling like he might have intended to tie off, but then he went right back to peddling. Leaves me with two possible trains of thought: either he really was just a clueless moron, or he was an outright dick.

When we'd finally had enough it was a chore just to get out. Some twat too inconsiderate to ready before launching spent forever and a day loading up their party pontoon, setting up the canopy, etc all right on the ramp. They finally got out of the way and in the time it took me to fetch the truck and trailer the canoedlers and yakkers had turned the launch into a total clusterfuck. SUVs parked all around the launch, one yak half on the boat ramp despite a dedicated kayak launch, one couple sitting next to their SUV and yak in the road eating lunch in the launch area...

It took years to get my social anxieties in check and my reward is having to bite my tongue off to keep from shaming folks for not having some basic, (un)common courtesy.

Whew! On the flip I saw my first snakehead couple with fry today. I've caught plenty but these two were clearly together and still protecting their young, which looked like a bronze/gold, shimmering, swirling ball from a distance. I threw just about everything at them but they seemed wise to it and refused to strike. Both had to be in the five or six pound range easy.

Hardheads. Saltwater catfish. That's the kind of catfish that was being held.

They also don't get much more than 1 or 2 lbs (basically foreverdinks) and travel in huge schools that feed very aggressively on pretty much everything, so if you catch one, chances are there's dozens of others waiting to clean your hook the second it hits the water.

Gafftops are a close relative and have spines too, but they can actually get some size on them.
