Talk about fishing & or tackle
>>

What are you fishing for? A lot of people will put a snell hook on that and bottom fish for catfish, although more experienced fishermen usually prefer a free sliding fish-finder rig.

So, how are china lures?

Thinking about buying a Lew's Custom Speed Spool SLP, what's a good rod to go with it? I've been using an Ugly Stik with a Shakespeare spinning reel.

How to catch trout in the hot summer months? Where i'm at (southeastern PA) it's getting up to 90 degrees these days and the stocked trout streams are all pretty shallow

Is there a best time (early morning or sunset), or best place (upstream, by inlets, by outlets?)

>>1052828

Then you're mostly a lure fisherman after bass. Your set up will wok more than well enough. Just ditch the swivel, as it can alter the action on many baits, making them move incorrectly in the water.

Other than that, you're gold. Aside from trying out new lures, you shouldn't need any real changes to your gear and tackle unless you start targeting big catfish, crappie, trout, or get a boat or something.

Water will be coolest (and thus best aerated) first thing in the morning.

Deeper water will be cooler and better aerated. Try to find holes downstream of turbulent spots or the outside edge of bends in the stream.

Fish the confluences of smaller creeks and shit. They typically dig a bit of a trench, and will bring extra oxygen.

>>

Trout love love love cold water with high oxygen content. So check the deepest water you can find, especially if it's shaded and running. After that, look for structure: weeds, tree branches, rock piles, areas where the current is slacked or making little whirlpool.

Rusty crawfish, good man

Well in my opinion fishing should be purely for sport and that the enjoyment primarily comes from outsmarting the fish and secondarily from playing the fish. I like to think of how I can give the fish as much of an advantage as possible. For example, I only use a fly rod, it requires a lot of skill on the user's part and has a high margin for error. Even with a decade of experience I would still consider myself a beginner. However, it makes the practice of fishing much more sporting and satisfying. I have yet to find a legitimate and ethical reason to keep fish, although I have no grudge against people who do, especially invasives. I do think that daily limits should be changed to weekly or even monthly, but that's a pipe dream. To put it simply, recreational fisheries already face a lot of pressure and you are fooling yourself if you think culling is an effective long term solution.

I think by the time that I can see them, they can see me, and they get pretty disinterested at that point in eating.
Another thing is that it was just the wrong time of the day and weren't in eatin mode. I didnt see them do anything other than graze around not chasing any of the lil sunfish that stacked along the bank.

>>
>>1052914

If you were giving the fish as much of an advantage as possible, you'd be hand fishing or have a cane pole or something. Or a rig that makes the fight with the fish a totally one sided affair so it can be landed and released ASAP so as to avoid undue stress.

Or not target wild populations at all and only go after farm raised/stocked fish.

And as both a fisherman and a fisheries biologist, you'd know that even if people limit out in a single day, they very very rarely limit out every single day, and even if they did, there are usually possession limits equal to 2x days worth of bag limits, and very very few people ever eat that much fish to begin with. Lots only allow one fish of a particular kind per year via tags. No idea how you'd effectively enforce weekly or monthly bag limits.

Anyone know if male and femal sunfish have different colors? I took a photo of every fish I caught yesterday from that pond to finally figure out the number of species. From what I can see it looks like there are 5 different types depending on the answer to my question above. The one not pictured is what I strongly believe to be a pumpkin seed
>>
>>1053047

Females are going to be duller than males and often lack the color on their gill "ears". Your upper left is a male bluegill. Lower left is a female bluegill. Upper right is a male Redear/shell cracker. Lower right is a male long ear.

A size 1 or 2 Aberdeen hook could work. Might be a little big for most panfish, but I've landed plenty of larger bluegill, bass, and catfish on them while fishing for crappie. Using shiners as bait.

there's like 2 lakes in NW IL that have them, and Carlyle lake and Lake Shelbyville in central IL stock tiger muskie but they won't reproduce.

Obviously Lake Michigan, but also the northern third of the Missippi and the northernmost tip of the Wabash. Carlyle Lake stocks them but they don't reproduce.
>and I don't have a boat
Pretty much the only one of those that will be even remotely accessible to you is going to be pike then, and pretty much only in the Mississippi and only during spring and fall.

Yes. The more the better, however it's going to take some serious practice to get it to work with my lighter crankbaits for constant cast and retrieve during the spring and fall without backlash. The internal braking system is a bit archaic. For now my plan is to stillfish for channel cats and the steelies out on the harbors.
>>
>>1053071
Basically what he said. But to add if you wanted to try for walleye you can get them from shore if you have waders during the spring fall at sunrise or sunset when they move into the shallows to feed.

it is possible to catch musky from shore though, you just need to be super ultra lucky.

My guess is fuel cuz it had spark yesterday when it first started acting up. It went down and wouldn't start and then started a bit later and him and I tested the spark. It's a long story but we were fixing an error with another car and we had it connected via jumper cables but we didn't think anything of it cuz it turned over just fine the second time and even drove it to the store. Still could be either thing though I guess. Life just decided to shit on me in the course of two days.

You'll want to fish in the morning when the water is cooler and the trout more active. Look for a colder tributary entering the main stream or find springs in the creekbed.

You'll have good opportunities for trout at Valley Creek in Valley Forge Park (check the regs) I think that's artificiales only.

>fish that exist to be eaten
All animals exist to be eaten.

You act like limits are just made up by some dude going "let's see if this works". There's a bunch of research behind what limits to put in place.

A lot of fishable places wouldn't exist if people didn't make it and stock it. Is a fish from a man made reservoir different than a fish from a completely natural source? After all those fish were put in the lake to be caught and probably eaten.

My whole complaint with your view is that you think it's somehow more ethical to 1.) eat farmed fish 2.) catch and release "wild" fish (I'm sure the fish is very happy to have a hook put through its mouth and undergo tremendous stress for you to have fun, but it doesn't matter cause you aren't eating him right?)

Your whole argument is "don't eat the fishes because it hurts my feelings :("

>falling for the "humans are the apex predator" meme
>thinking humans should have any part in a predator prey complex, recreationally

Humans are literally animals. We're the most evolved species on the planet and can therefore use tools to give us an unfair advantage over other animals. That makes us the apex predator.

I bet you think hunting is bad too don't you?

Yes, overfishing is a problem. Some people do take to much and abusing the source of food isn't ethical. Overfishing in freshwater is not nearly as big of a concern as pollution or people overusing water sources. The amount of fish in the (probably stocked) water mean dick if the water is shitty and it doesn't have a way to naturally cycle back into the lake.

>tfw I've literally only kept one fish I've caught to eat
>tfw this anon still doesn't understand that more fish =/= healthier body of water

What kind of line does Jeremy Wade use for the larger species that he targets?
>>
>>1053125
The general rule is that heavier lures will generally need more braking, while smaller lures will need less. But there's no way to tell you a specific number, because the exact right setting changes with every single different lure you throw.

Most people will advise you to set your reel's spool brakes just loose enough so that the weight of the lure at the end of your line will let it drop slowly when you let go of the spool in cast mode, but not so fast that the spool keeps spinning when the lure hits the ground. You want the reel to stop turning right as the lure touches.
>>
>>1053131
From what I've seen looks like a lot of large test mono with steel leaders depending on the species.
A lot of fish don't need fancy flouro or braid especially considering half that dudes show is catching different species of catfish, and numerous record cats are caught on mono in the 30-40lbs range.

You DO realize that ALL Brown Trout in the USA and ALL Rainbow Trout not in the Pacific Northwest are non-native, introduced species, right? Often they can take over a fishery and crowd out native species, including native trout. It really would be best for local ecosystems if we just kept eating them out of the rivers so that the native species have a chance to survive.
But you don't want to hear any of that because you think all fish are the same and everything's natural.
Well, it's NOT, at least not where game fish are concerned. Long ago people put fish in places where they don't belong so they could catch something when they dropped a line in the water. Sometimes it's worked great, other times it's had bad consequences, and the only way we can keep those consequences from getting worse is to keep pulling fish out of the water.
That they're tasty as fuck too is a nice side benefit to the larger and more vital job of conservation that fisherman are helping to perform, and in fact are paying for the privilege of doing.
So you can fuck right off, leave us the fuck in peace, andnit would be nice for you to say thank you to us before you go.

Yes, that's incredibly frustrating.
First off, he doesn't have the skills you do. You may not think of it this way, but it took you a long time to learn how to fish each lure and have confidence that it will catch fish if you do your part. He doesn't have that yet. He doesn't even know what "doing his part" means, so setting something up in easy mode is the name of the game. Just something to prove to himself he CAN do it, he can "win" at fishing.
Get him on the fish and he'll be more ready to do it next time.
>>
>>1053153
I'm willing to call wild browns and bows invasive once our brook trout population has a chance. The other two, well actually just browns, do a lot better than native brookies do in my state. They're probably in twice as many streams than brookies.

Any wild trout population seems good to have in my state, really only exist in upper Appalachian if NJ and once you get south there's nothing for trout.

So until the state only stocks brookies in streams where they could survive in, than that would be cool.to help and kill other trout populations

But that's the thing: Browns and Bows EAT Brookies. They're one of the big reasons native Brook Trout populations aren't rebounding. To give the one a chance, you have to get rid of the others.

Browns and Bows may be great for fishing and eating, but don't kid yourself into thinking their presence doesn't adversely affect native fish populations; they do.

Bought one today actually... needed some swivels so naturally I ended up with a lot more. Ended up with some hooks and some soft baits and a new Snapper spoon (pink and yellow for those lazy summer trout) and a box for my Gulp!-stuff as the one I used so far leaks under pressure and also the sand eel in-line.
Got the swivels I needed too so all is good.
And actually it has surprisingly vivid action for such a straight lure I think. Nothing can compare to a Stripper. Still one of the go-to's.

And no, haven't been able to fish much lately. Been too busy. Went out 30mins last week with the missus to test my kayak and then 2hrs last thursday and then again today for a few hrs in the heat. And those have been my first trips in over 2 months I think. Only a small mackerel on land. But well, that is to be expected in this heat. Trout generally don't like it too warm you know.
Fishing from a kayak is fun though. Access to spots you normally wouldn't have. So far only paddled in the canal and harbour. Can't wait to take it out on the fjord with all those little reefs and holms just waiting to be fished...

>>1053391
He's not wrong though you know...
>>
>>1053338

This is part of why I like live bait fishing when taking people out for the first time.

It usually outdoes artificial and the actual act of catching live bait can be entertaining in and of itself. When I take my wife or nephew, they use an ultralight to catch bluegill and porgies/whiting or whatever. They always bite, always fight, and if it's slow enough, I join in and we try to see who can catch the most/biggest. And if you want, you can keep some to fry up.
>>
the sea, she be a cruel mistress.
>>
>>1053422
Looks good! You use those softbaits for seatrouts too? If so how? Bombarda..?
I'd love to catch some mackarel, supposedly they're in the fjord here too, but Ive never seen any.

Also word of advice, the colour on the back of those sandeels is cast into the lure, but the flashy line on the side isnt, so if you want to keep it flashy, dont let it bump around loosely in the tackle box. It's a great lure concept, but for 80-100kr, I expected better quality honestly.
The eyes and the line was pretty much completely gone on mine. I bet it has something to do with all the garfish strikes it gets too.

Yep, understood and agree. Next year Nj will be making brookies protected in specific regions but pretty rare to find them outside of those regions so they're basically all protected.

Once they start stocking brookies and browns again I wonder how they'll be doing that
>>
>>1053450
Softies for sea trout too, yes.
Either bombarda or carolina/texas rigged or on a simple jig head depending on where I want to fish (depth and bottom). Only bought them today so dunno if they work. I think they will though. My hypothesis is that most predatory fish will go for the same bait (adjusted for size). If bass it works for bass, perch or pike then I am pretty damn sure it will work for seatrout as well.

'My' mackerel was herring-size and actually went for a sabiki rig made for herring.
Bigger should come soon enough.
The thing with mackerel is that they come in schools. You can fish for hours and get nothing then suddenly you can get 30 fish in 30minutes and then nothing for hours again. So I guess either be patient or seek them out. Then there is the issue of getting them to bite which is a whole other problem.

Duely noted. Mainly bought it because it was pretty. I am pretty sure cheaper alternatives such as Langelands Tobis, Sommet etc. catch fish just as fine as ZOMFG 3D SCANNED hyped Savage Gear.

Oh im sure they can catch trouts, I was just wondering how you would get length on the casts. Ive never fished with softies besides gulp worms.
I dont think I could do a carolina/texas rig for all the seaweed It would catch here.

It's a little strange how home/handmade spoons and lures are sold for 50-70kr while Savage Gear feel they have to charge 90kr for these machine made ones.
Hopefully the price will go down once the hype is over...

Definitely a possibility. Our fishing conditions here are just a little too rough for light lures like that. The trouts would love a lure like that, but at many spots you need to be able to cast 50-70m.

sp's are used for surf fishing. casting them isnt a problem. I'm amazed that you can cast 19 grams 70m. what line do you use?
>>
>>1053523
Not sure how to explain it, even though 19g sounds like not so much, its very condense, so it casts well. Its so heavy that it sinks quickly on its own, hence the no spoon-thingie under the head.
I use a 0.12-0.17 braid, with a fluorocarbon leader.
After I broke my 10ft rod I can probably cast 60m in no wind, thats with an old soft 9ft.

Also, let's say, if I had a minnow plug that could dive like 20 feet underwater, and I tossed it in a river that's 30 feet deep(the Rhône), might I catch anything?
>>
>>1053523
The 3d sand eel is 27 g isn't it? Also, the thing is solid metal and has skinnier profile to look more like sand eel. Daiwa sp is overall heavy, but it is hollow and bigger so it has more wind resistance and doesn't cast nearly as far. A 3/4 oz kastmaster will outcast any daiwa sp for this reason. I wouldn't be surprised if the sandeel spoon can outcast the sp.The difference in cast distance will also be bigger in heavy wind.

Daiwa sp is also not too great in turbulent water since it is hollow and get push around very easily and daiwa sp needs to be on retrieve with tension to dive and make good action. A spoon will sink fast and won't get affect much by rough water
>>
>>1053535
It all depend on conditions. Sometimes the fish feed near the surface and sometimes they feed deeper in the water. Each species act differently. Just try it out and see
>>
>>1053539
Its 19g, 27g and 40g. But Odense-anon and I both live near fjords where 27g would be wayy overkill.
Most people here use 10-15g spoons or flies. I would image the 40g version would cast well over 100m.
>>
>>1053529
You just gotta buy plugs that go to the right depth. If one is diving too deep you just gotta let it float up, other words reel it in less. (Taking pauses and reeling it in slower)
It's not bad to do that too. Sometimes miniscule action and at the top is good.

the bullet is great in oncoming wind when you dont feel like throwing metal and also when fish are chasing baits deeper. I like that you can walk the bullet, the swimming action would be comparable to the line through eel. theres a youtube of a tournament caster throwing the sinking sp endzone to endzone on a field, something to aspire to but not truly necessary to catch fish.

Alright, so the pond has enough ice to cover most/all of it. Yet the ice is not thick enough for me to walk on.

What the fuck am I supposed to do? Somehow break a perfectly straight line in the ice so I can reel a fish in? I'll assume you can make this small leap in logic.
>>
>>1053607

Artificials are cleaner and require less upkeep compared to live bait. They're also less likely to result in gut hooked fish which makes them preferred for catch and release. People using live bait brought from somewhere else can also result in invasive species being introduced.

Many states have regions, seasons, and species where one can only use artificial so if you want to be able to fish everywhere all the time, you'll want to use it.

There's also to a lesser extent the idea that using live bait is for "poor people" or folks who aren't in it for the sport. Many lure fisherman (especially bass fishermen) look down on live bait users (especially catfish fisherman) with the same disdain fly fisherman (especially trout fisherman) look down on everyone else. It's also harder to market hooks, swivels, and weights than it is to market new lures or specially tied flies so you just see less hype being generated around the stuff.

But live bait generally outperforms lures, which generally outperform flies.

here are my two tips
1: make syre you are pausing long enough on your back stroke for your line to totally straighten out
2: open your loops a little bit to keep the streamer farther from your main line. you shouldnt have too much issue still getting 50+ feet with practice

>>1053710
Shape for one. That will affect the action of the worm.

Otherwise I haven't used those ever so I can't say very much. However I doubt they have a color like Tequila Sunrise and the color often affects performance. I say that because I've used several different Powerbait Power Worms and Tequila Sunrise works the best out of all of them. It could very well be simply due to how easy it is for the fish to "see" it in the water.

Florida has the dankest saltwater fishing ever and the best part is that you don't even need a boat to get them. I will never forget the first time I hooked a snook off boynton beach. It did all sorts of crazy jumps and powerful runs before it got unhooked. Truly makes bass fishing boring.

>>
>>1053676
Shallows and shade early and into in the late morning. I'd work tree/shrubs lines, overhangs, etc. Lily pads if your tackle permits. Topwater I'd go with poppers or spooks depending on if the fish want a slow presentation or are willing to give chase. If the fish won't strike at the surface I'd go with squarebills, shallow suspending jerkbaits , spinnerbaits or jig spinners, again depending how active they are. If water temps are high enough to have the fish really sluggish go with T or C rigged worms, football jigs, or really slow rolled spinners. Jigging spoons/silver buddys if that's your thing and you don't have to worry about snags.

Take note of large, consistenly shady places as the day goes on. They'll be cooler and prime spots to target when surface temps go up in the sun stricken areas. Also go deeper as things heat up throughout the day, especially if there isn't a lot of shade available on the body of water and the fish are no longer striking in the shallows.

For color selection know what's in the water this time of year. Bullfrogs, crawfish, bluegill, crappie, perch... figure out what the bass' food source is and match the color. Be sure to look down the mouths of any you catch before you throw them back. Sometimes you'll see some chunks of crawfish, the tail of a shad, or whatever sticking out of their gullet. Barring that some old rules of thumb are "bright days bright colors, dark days dark colors", black and noisy in murky waters to make a solid silhouette and ping the lateral line, and the blue-violet end of the color spectrum is visible the farthest underwater if I remember right.

He's saying the pond doesn't freeze over thick enough to ice fish and he can't fathom a way to break a wide, straight path out through the thin ice so he has a clear area to cast into. My answer to him is he's SOL. I guess he could go miniature icebreaker with an aluminum boat to break it up but that's more hassle than its worth. Never minding that if air temperature is sub freezing it's just going to start freezing back over, quickly too considering it's a pond and not moving water.

I tried fishing a half frozen pond a year or so ago. The jig skirt was freezing solid, the spool icing over. I say do what the rest of us do who get winters but not strong enough for ice fishing - sit inside and order more tackle than can be justified because spring time can't come soon enough.
>>
>>1053729
>Drill a hole
Okay, I get that you are a trip fag. So I'm trying to be patient with your autism. Now let me spell it out.

In order to drill a hole in the ice, the ice needs to be able to bear the weight of a person and their gear.

I weigh over 200 lbs with all of my gear.

The ice in my area is usually too thin to bear that kind of weight.

So how in the fuck am I going to walk out onto ice, that is going to break beneath my feet, in order to drill a hole and fish?

Do you now understand?

>chicken liver and crawler

Think I'll be good? I don't catfish often.

>>

>>
>>1053986

>>
>>1053930

I usually mono as my leader. Fluro is useful for being clear in water, non stretchy, and abrasion resistant, but catfish aren't line shy and braid is already non stretchy and abrasion resistant.

I usually go with slightly heavier mono leader. It stretches, which helps set the hook without tearing it out of the fish's mouth and gas some give when you go to land it and the fish starts to thrash/roll/surge.

Also, chicken livers and worms catch plenty if small to decent cats. For even more, try stink bait, especially punch bait on a treble hook.

And when you want to go after the bigger ones, absolutely nothing beats live or cut bluegill/sunfish You might even catch a big bass or two.

Oh and a pair of needle nose pliers.
>>
>>1053987

They work for trout. Probably panfish.
>>
>>1053496
>I dont think I could do a carolina/texas rig for all the seaweed It would catch here.
You can always try rigging them weedless. Maybe that helps. And if floating seaweed is a problem too add some sort of weed-catcher 1-2m in front of the lure. I've done that a few times with mixed success. Most of the floating shit gets caught in front of the lure rather than on it.

And yeh... those 3d sandeels is mainly hype I think. Completely unrealistic lures catch fish too.
While we're at it I have mixed feelings about Savage Gear (SG). They make some nice, innovative lures but most of it seems a gimmick to me. But they are damn good at marketing and I suspect their lineup is better at catching fishermen than catching fish.
They are some of the first to really cash in on modern technology with social media, youtube, 3d scanning and such and I appreciate the idea but I also find must of their stuff gimmicky, overhyped and overpriced.

>>1053512
Probably. Our trout eat pretty much any living thing in the sea. Their diet consist of anything from herring to fleas. And often they are picky as hell. Eg. if they are only a frenzy feeding on nereididae you won't catch anything using a spoon lure for example. And in periods they are feeding on fleas only which means you have to whip out a fly to catch anythng.
Other than that the gear is, I assume, what Americans would call heavy bass gear. 8-12" rods w. casting weight 10-50g usually. So as >>1053517 says, a bit rougher.
I kindda disagree on the 50-70m-thing though. Fly fishermen cast 30m or so and they catch plenty of fish too. In some spots 70m is required though.
The problem more often than not when it comes to length is wind. Throwing a wide spoon or a light wobler up against the wind is kindda futile.

Can you fly fish anywhere? Or does it have to be clear water and trout? And can you catch bass on a fly?
>>
>>1054005
>Can you fly fish anywhere?
Yes. As long as you don't have bushes, people or other shit behind you. Even then there are 'tricks' but room is preferable.
>Or does it have to be clear water and trout
Nop. A fly is not much different from any other lure. They are generally smaller and lighter but even that is no hard rule. Look up fly fishing for pike for example. I think the reason fly fishing for trout is so popular is because of the aesthetics of fly fishing and the perception that trout are somewhat noble fish (don't ask me why) and the fact that trout is one of the few decently sized fish that also eat small prey such as fleas as I mentioned in >>1053997
>And can you catch bass on a fly?
I don't see why not. You can get flies imitating just about anything from small fish to worms.

Yes, you can fly fish anywhere and catch anything that will eat flies, small critters or minnows, which is basically anything.
You don't need tonfish flies in cold water, though troutfags don't want to admit it.
Both bass and panfish can be taken on a fly. There's a whole separate school of thought concerning warm water fly fishing. If you want a book to read about it (fly fishermen love writing books almost as much as they love reading them), try to find a secondhand copy of "Fly Tying and Fly Fishing for Bass and Panfish" by Tom Nixon. The guy revolutionized and codified warm water tactics and patterns that work, despite not looking like "proper" flies.

People cut fat into game meat because it is invariably very lean.

If you don't like the taste of wild game it's simply because you were raised on bland boneless/skinless chicken breast and ground beef. You have the palate of a typical urban N. American basically.

Grouse is better than farm-raised chicken and moose blows beef out of the water. You just don't like meat with taste because you aren't used to it, and disdainfully refer to it under the umbrella term, "gamey".

Nice strawman and ad hominem arguments. You're proving you can't think logically either.

You know what double blind studies ALSO show? That educated wine tasters can't tell the difference between red wine and white wine with red food coloring added, despite obvious things like tannins in the red wine, which do add bitterness and were easily detectable by laymen. And the more educated they were, the less they could tell the difference.

We weren't talking about that.
We were talking about your claim that farmed fish tastes better than wild. You can't defend that, as not even YOUR OWN CITED STUDIES back it up ("no difference" is NOT the same as "one tastes better than the other"), so now that you have no evidence to back up your claim whatsoever, you're just doing damage control and appealing to your credentials, which is ANOTHER logical fallacy.

That makes four logical fallacies so far, and no doubt you're going to continue adding more now that your evidence has been exposed.

Your education is one thing, but this is all peripheral bullshit to mask the fact that you have no experience in the real world and don't know what you're talking about.

It's a greenie my mistake. The NY DEC doesn't stock park ponds with warmouths they're non native in our area, especially the 5 boros. I would like to catch one though
>>
>>1054086
The studies cited here >>1054077 actually note that the tasting panels preferred wild fish. Except for the first one (Organoleptic qualities of farmed and wild salmon), I couldn't get access to that one. Strangely the local hospital could.

Did everyone forget to take their autism pills this morning?
>>
Long Island Sound fishing report says bluefish bite is excellent. How should I target them from the pier? What sort of rig/bait works well?
>>
>>1054112
Bunker chunks with a fish finder rig or any flashy spoon, plug or jig with a fast retrieve should do it
>>
>>1054106

They're CAPLETS, not PILLS.
REEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>1054104
So even his own cited studies wreck his claims?
That's even better than I thought.
This is a glorious day.
>>
>>1054127
Well I was thinking the same but when the three I can read (or at least read the abstract) invariably say that people preferred wild fish, I decided it was probably a response proving the other guy wrong.

So a different anon proving the farm fag wrong.
>>
If I want to make a pitching set up should I get a left hand retrieve?
>>
>>1054132
It's personal preference. There's only been one time where I think a left hand retrieve would've got me the fish. It's never been an issues otherwise.

If I'm really confident there's a fish in an area I'll just pitch with my left hand.

Can I use fly fishing flies to catch frogs? Also how do I make deep diving lures dive a little less?
>>
>>1054140
>Also how do I make deep diving lures dive a little less?
crank them then everynow and then jerk up the rod tip so they ascend a few feet. If they float then you can pause and let them float up at their own pace.
>>
>>1054139
Alright good to know since it seems like left handed are usually sold out.

My best frog catching lure is a frog. I'd imagine a popper would work if you want to do it with a fly rod. As for making lures run a little shallower you can use mono which helps a tiny bit since it floats. Other then that your only option is retrieving it slower and pausing it so I can float back up a little then get reeled back down. Easier just to get a new bait that runs at an appropriate depth you want it to be
>>
>>1054117
I was told lures suck for saltwater fishing. Do lures produce a lot less compared to bait?
>>
>>1054132
Up to you.
Pitching isn't as nearly as distance-dependent a skill as plain old casting, it's much more focused on precision and very low surface splash.
But if you can do both with one setup-and you can-why wouldn't you?
>>
>>1052925
Nice. Sjælland here where is the best spot for Fishing im new to this.
>>
>>1054153
Most times yes.
There are some specific instances and situations where lures can outperform bait, but for the most part it's all about the convenience factor. Live bait goes bad and leaves stink on your hands. Lures don't.

anyone in here have a 3d printer and want to print me a little fly reel? i think it would be pretty cool to have a 3d printed reel for my 2 weight. it will never have any more than 4x tippet on it anyways, so if i could break 6 pound line without breaking the reel it is strong enough for me
>>
My roommate always seems to try to get me to bring home shit that I catch even though I really fucking don't want to and it always leads to a fucking never ending argument. What do?
>>
>>1054191
Explaining to him why you fish and what CnR means should be enough for anyone thats reasonable. Someone should understand you fish for fun/sport not for food and how it's just a hassle prepping the food too.

If they don't get it im afraid he/she is an asshole but you should know that by now
>>
>>1054191
Are they willing to clean and cook the fish? Perhaps make a meal for you?
>>
>>1054143
It's definitely not a bad idea. I just wouldn't worry too much about the handedness unless you're planning to fish tournaments where that one fish may be the difference between winning and losing.

>>1054191
Does he expect you to clean it and cook it? Because I can understand being like "hey anon if you catch anything good bring it home and I'll cook it for us." But if he expects you to do all the work that's some entitled shit.

And the hassle of just bringing back fish is a good enough reason not to. Tell him to stop being a douche.
>>
>>1054193
Yeah, I've tried explaining it to him but he is definitely an asshole. I do occasionally keep fish but when I do that it's because either a) it's not gonna make it anyway or b)I was really craving catfish or crappie. That is not the all of my trips or even 10% of them.

It's just like every single fucking time I come home it's, "Empty handed? Didn't catch anything?" and then I'm like, "I caught plenty but I didn't keep any." and I get a snotty, "well that sounds like a fucking waste.". I'm tired of that shit.
>>
>>1054191
tell them to buy a rod and catch their own fish
>>
>>1054204
This. Fuck him.
>>
>>1054197
I'd be doing majority of the work. He might cook it but as far as cleaning and prep, that'd be something I'm stuck doing cuz he's a big clean freak. I've also been put into the situation where I've brought home something for us, cleaned and prepped it, got told that he'd cook it, and then he never did and I had to fucking toss it. I'm not wasting a fish for no fucking reason.
>>
>>1054199
Some people can't comprehend that fishing can be a leisure activity rather than a means for getting food.

I remember when I was 5 too.
>>
>>1054214
For cats I like breading em in cornmeal with some Tony Chachere's and frying em in the cast iron. Works good with crappie and bluegill too.

For redfish (which I only keep if the poor fish was already a goner) I blacken em in a cast iron. Press the fillers in melted butter on both sides then press one side in Caribbean jerks seasoning and lightly sprinkle it on the other side. Place them in the skillet on the heavily seasoned side till they get a nice crust and then flip em over and cook the other side for about two minutes, then add a bit of water to the skillet.

>some flour
>paprika
>garlicsalt
>pepper
>an egg
>can-o-beer
>usually i go for red stripe
>mix together
>dip filet in plain flour
>dip in beer batter
>fry in butter
>serve with lemon
its pretty good for panfish and stuff. for finer fish (flounder, trout, salmon, etc)
>chop some green onion
>zest a lemon
>sprinkle on some pepper and salt
>fry in butter with lemon zest and green onions
>microwave your zested lemon for 20 seconds
>cut in to quarters
>as the fish is nearing completion squeeze some lemon on to the fish so it glazes on to it
>serve with another lemon wedge incase the person eating it really loves lemon
>>

Hey, sometimes you need live bait. At the pier its next to impossible to work a lure when the fish are next to the pilings or under the pier. Also if the water is crystal clear some species won't even touch a lure.

That sounds tasty as fuck. Sadly the only one of those in my area is catfish and I can't seem to catch those.

Honestly I sometimes bake fillets after some seasoning with some pepper, lemon, lime, and then whatever I think will taste good. For example, caught a bass last week and I did above with basil.

More often I'll fry them basically the same way you do Skid. Honestly I'm a bit afraid of fucking up my bass or bluegill to the point of in-edibility, so I don't experiment as much as I usually do.
>>
>>1054260
You can also use the blackened recipe on stripers if you have any in your area. Just make sure you don't forget to pour a bit of water in your skillet. You want the vapor to cook the fish the rest of the way through.
>>
>>1054265

There's some in lakes too. They can live in either salt or fresh, but they get bigger in the salt iirc.
>>
>>1054272
Huh, we have hybrids in a couple lakes and resevoirs. Mostly in rivers though.

Lucky me one of those lakes is nearby. I've just never caught shit out of it.
>>
>>1054272
P sure lake Texoma has some salt sized stripers.
>>
>>1054269
Yes but they have been introduced in lots of places that are outside of their natural areas such as places like Oklahoma and Tennessee.
>>
>>1054277
There's a ton of hybrids with white bass (the recipe also works well on white bass btw). Pretty much every major river or impoundment south of Montreal has white bass, striped bass, or their hybrids by now.

they live in fresh, salt & brackish. the fish in salt need fresh to spawn and usually swim up rivers or deltas to reproduce.

salt stripers taste better than fresh

>>
>>1054214

I cut shark into strip and fry it in tempura batter.

Trout gets smoked or fried in flour/cornmeal and served with loaded mashed potatoes.

I did some beer batter whiting that was delicious too.

I also fucking spicy poke and cevice when I can get tuna or little snapper.

I use redfish and catfish as a replacement for chicken in pastas and Thai curry.

But most fish get double breaded in panko crumbs and fried.
>>
>>1054271

No, more likely he spends what he can money in the latest bass/trout shit that's marketed to him and cares just as much about trying to impress people as he does about actually landing fish.

Okay im going fishing at north carolina on the ocean side and was wonder whats a good setup for fishing in saltwater there. Also there is a pond there with carp, catfish crappie and some othet fish what would be best for both salt water and fresh water fishing
